Optical Characteristics of Corneal Nanostructure According to the Angle of Collagen-fiber-layer Arrangement

  • Collagen fibers tens of nanometers in size, which constitute most of the corneal volume of the human eye, are layered in a uniform direction, and adjacent fiber layers are arranged at an angle of 90° to each other. According to the results of this study, the transmittance at 45° of interlayer rotation angle is highest, and higher than that of the 90° body structure. The transmittance is examined, concerning the polarization state of the incident light; circularly polarized light case shows higher transmittance than linearly polarized. Through this, a simulation to confirm the deformed structure of collagen fibers, which show higher transmittance than the anatomical structure of the cornea, is attempted.

  • An automatic multiframe procedure for tracking signalized points on multiple, differently moving discontinuous surface is described. The position of markers which attached on human body give us some important information such as velocity, acceleration, angular velocity and angular acceleration, etc, of the rigid objects. Generally, the detected objects occufying some area in images rather than a point because of the generic size of the marks or the smeared effects of the camera. To solve the problem we used a modified clustering algorithm.

  • This paper describes the fabrication and characteristics of vibration-driven electromagnetic energy harvester without spring to use at low frequency like a human body motion. The implemented energy harvester consists of NdFeB magnets, copper coil. The optimization of induced voltage was done by the various widths of coil, number of the turns, size of fixed and moving magnets and thicknesses of the cylinder. The fabricated energy harvester is capable of producing up to 15.0 $V_{pp}$ for basic model and 28.80 $V_{pp}$ for improved model at 5.0 Hz resonance frequency and 0.75 g acceleration level. The basic model and improved model are provided a maximum power of 6.375 mWand 25.831 mW at 1 KHz of load resistance in rectifier circuit.

Growth Rate of Transgenic Pigs and Size of Pig Hearts for Xenotransplantation to Cynomolgus Monkey

  • To compensate for the critical shortage of human organs for allotransplantation, xenotransplantation studies using genetically modified pigs are being performed in Korea. Two types of pigs that are used are ${\alpha}1,3$-galactosyltransferase gene knockout (GalT KO) pigs and GalT KO+hCD46 (human complement regulatory protein) pigs. The present study measured the gestation time, birth weight, daily growth rate, and heart weight of both kinds of transgenic minipigs. The gestation period for both types of pigs was 117~119 days. There was no difference in the body weight of GalT KO (-/+) and GalT KO (-/-) piglets, but GalT KO+hCD46 ($-^{hCD46+}/+$) pigs were significantly heavier at birth than were GalT KO+hCD46 ($-^{hCD46+}/-^{hCD46+}$) pigs. During the first 10 weeks of life, the daily weight gain of GalT KO+hCD46 ($-^{hCD46+}/-^{CD46+}$) piglets, which are considered the optimal type for xenotransplantation, was 0.19 kg. The weight of hearts from GalT KO piglets up to two months of age was affected more by body weight than by age. Transgenic pigs showed no differences in gestation period or reproductive ability compared with normal pigs. These results comprise basic data that may be used in xenotransplantation studies and transgenic animal production in Korea.

A Study Concerning Analysis of Arousal State of locomotive Engineering During Operating Train (열차 운행 중인 기관사의 각성상태 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The study for the passenger's comfortableness of vehicles and the arousal of car drivers has been done widely. On the other hand, there are few studies for the locomotive engineers. Human error means that the mistakes made by human, recently it receives attention in the field of safety engineering and human engineering. Comparing the operating condition of train with car, because of the simplification of the visual stimulus, the arousal level on the train goes down easily. The arousal level down makes judgement down, the accident risk from human error is getting bigger. In this study, we measured bio-signals(ECG, EDA, PPG, respiration and EEG) from 6 locomotive engineers to evaluate their arousal state while they operated the train. Also we recorded the 3 axes acceleration signal showing the vibration state of train. Also, the existence of tunnels were simultaneously measured. At the station section where the train speed goes down, the size of vector's sum decreases because of reduced vibration. Beta component in EEG tends to increase at the entering point of each station and tunnel. It is due to the arousal reaction and tension growth. The mean SCR(skin conductance response) was more increased in neutral section. As the button control movement (body movement) increases in the neutral section, it is appeared that SCR increase. RR interval tends to gradually increase during train operation for 1 hour 40 minutes. However, It tends to sharply decrease at the stop station because strong concentration needed to stop train on the exact point. The engineer's arousal reaction can be checked through analysing the bio-signal change during train operation. Therefore, if this analysing result is adopted to the sleepiness prevention caution system, it will be useful for the safety train operation.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish concept about a plan direction of preschooler's library, and provide a design type of preschooler's library. As a result, the following findings were obtained: 1) For the preschooler's reading area, it should be segregated between schooler and preschooler. Because there is a difference between a library use action and a development characteristic, it needs to be segregated to avoid conflict using library for both of those groups. 2) The space composition of preschooler's library stands up, and of a tube considers a traffic line of a user according to the function and systematizes a child, and to cause an interest of preschoolers. 3) Furnitures and equipment of preschooler's library must arrange in consideration of human body size of a user in a tube.

  • This study intends to improve the efficiencies of school works by proposing a method of determining the standard sizes of chairs and desks. To achive this purpose, eight measurements were taken of 1248 school children. The main results drawn from this study are : 1. There are significant correlations between stature and popliteal height and between stature and elbow height (seated). 2. There are significant differences between men and women of similar stature in respect of popliteal height. 3. The standard sizes of chairs and desks ought to be based on the characteristics of human body size and their relationship.

Distribution Status of Hybrid Types in Large Liver Flukes, Fasciola Species (Digenea: Fasciolidae), from Ruminants and Humans in Vietnam

  • The aim of this study is to delineate 'admixed hybrid' and 'introgressive' Fasciola genotypes present in the Fasciola population in Vietnam. Adult liver flukes collected from ruminants in 18 Provinces were morphologically sorted out by naked eyes for small (S), medium (M) and large (L) body shapes; and human samples (n=14) from patients. Nuclear ribosomal (rDNA) ITS1 and ITS2, and mitochondrial (mtDNA) nad1 markers were used for determination of their genetic status. Total 4,725 worm samples of ruminants were tentatively classified by their size: 6% (n=284) small (S)-, 13% (n=614) medium (M)-, and 81% (n=3,827) large (L)-forms. All the representative (n=120, as 40 each group) and 14 human specimens, possessed maternal mtDNA of only F. gigantica and none of F. hepatica. Paternally, all (100%) of the L-(n=40) and 77.5% (n=31) of the M-flukes had single F. gigantica rDNA indicating 'pure' F. gigantica. A majority (90%, n=36) of the S- and 15% (n=6) of the M-worms had single F. hepatica rDNA, indicating their introgressive; the rest (10%, n=4) of the S- and 7.5% (n=3) of the M-flukes had mixture of both F. gigantica and F. hepatica rDNAs, confirming their admixed hybrid genetic status. Fourteen human samples revealed 9 (64%) of pure F. gigantica, 3 (22%) of introgressive and 2 (14%) of admixed hybrid Fasciola spp. By the present study, it was confirmed that the small worms, which are morphologically identical with F. hepatica, are admixed and/or introgressive hybrids of Fasciola spp., and able to be the pathogens of human fascioliasis.

  • With proper designs of infrared optic system and two dimensional scanning mechanism, a medical infrared imaging system has been developed. The infrared imaging system can be used for two dimensional imaging of surface temperature of human body by measuring the amount of infrared lights radiating from it. It hag been experimentally proven that the degree of temperature measurement accuracy of the developed system is under $0.1^{\circ}C$ with spatial resolution of 1 mrad, image matrix size of $256{\times}240$, and imaging time of 4 seconds.

Diagnostic Significance of pH-Responsive Gd3+-Based T1 MR Contrast Agents

  • We discuss recent advances in Gd-based $T_1$-weighted MR contrast agents for the mapping of cellular pH. The pH plays a critical role in various biological processes. During the past two decades, several MR contrast agents of strategic importance for pH-mapping have been developed. Some of these agents shed light on the pH fluctuation in the tumor microenvironment. A pH-responsive self-assembled contrast agent facilitates the visualization of tumor size as small as $3mm^3$. Optimization of various parameters is crucial for the development of pH-responsive contrast agents. In due course, the new contrast agents may provide significant insight into pH fluctuations in the human body.
