  • High thermal conductivity films with electrically insulating properties have a great potential for the effective heat transfer as substrate and thermal interface materials in high density and high power electronic packages. There have been lots of studies to achieve high thermal conductivity composites using high thermal conductivity fillers such alumina, aluminum nitride, boron nitride, CNT and graphene, recently. Among them, hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) nano-sheet is a promising candidate for high thermal conductivity with electrically insulating filler material. This work presents an enhanced heat transfer properties of ceramic/polymer composite films using h-BN nano-sheets and PVA polymer resins. The h-BN nano-sheets were prepared by a mechanical exfoliation of h-BN flakes using organic media and subsequent ultrasonic treatment. High thermal conductivities over $2.8W/m{\cdot}K$ for transverse and $10W/m{\cdot}K$ for in-plane direction of the cast films were achieved for casted h-BN/PVA composite films. Further improvement of thermal conductivity up to $13.5W/m{\cdot}K$ at in-plane mode was achieved by applying uniaxial compression at the temperature above glass transition of PVA to enhance the alignment of the h-BN nano-sheets.

  • We evaluated mineralogical, physical property and accelerated weather resistance of cinnabar, realgar and orpiment used as cultural heritages and traditional paintings. JB and JS are sample names of cinnabar and JH and UH are sample names of orpiment and Realgar, respectively. As a result of mineralogical property evaluation, Jinsa was identified cinnabar (HgS) and there was no difference in chemical composition according to the grade. UH and JH were confirmed realgar (AsS) and orpiment (As2S3), respectively. The polarization characteristics such as shape and color indicate that pigments using our test were natural mineral pigment observed by polarization microscope. Especially, in the case of cinnabar, it is not easy to distinguish between natural mineral pigment and synthetic pigment. But the results of polarization microscope said that cinnabar is natural occurring mineral which have authentic mineral particle and unevenly fracture. As a result of thermal analysis, JH has a higher glass transition temperature and heat stability than UH. After accelerated weather test, cinnabar, realgar and orpiment were striking result in color change because of light degradation. Red color of cinnabar turn into black and the color of realgar and orpiment became brighter than before. JB (meta-cinnabar) is more photosensitivity and faster becoming dark than JB (cinnabar). Finally light transforms realgar (red, As4S4) in arsenolite (As2O3).

  • Eco-friendly materials or bio-composites were made with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as matrix polymer and kenaf fibers as filler. Also, acetylated kenaf fibers and compatibilizer were adopted in order to improve the interfacial adhesion between fiber and polymer. In this study, the effect of chemical modification and compatibilizer on the mechanical-viscoelastic and morphology properties of the bio-composites was discussed. The hydrophobic fibers by acetylation were known to show better interfacial bonding with the matrix polymer and resulted in improved performance and morphology. Viscoelastic property and glass transition temperature, however, were not nearly enhanced.

  • Non-linear optical polymer based on poly (${\alpha}$-methylstyrene-co-maleic anhydride) (MSMA) substrate polymer was prepared by polymer reaction method and its thermal and electro-optic properties were examined. In the polymer reaction between MSMA substrate polymer and 2-[4-(4-nitrophenylazo)-N-ethylphenylamino]ethanol (DR1) chromophore, the degree of substitution of DR1 into MSMA was higher with the 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) as catalyst and 3-dicyclohexyl carbodiimide (DCC) as dehydrating agent (sample, MSMA-DC) than the one with just 4-dimethylaminopyridine as catalyst (sample, MSMA-D). The synthesized NLO polymer (MSMA-DC) exhibited electro-optic coefficient of 18 pm/V (632.8 nm) and glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of about $175^{\circ}C$.

  • To mass-produce useful biopolymer films, chitosan/gelatin blend films were prepared by solution casting method. Effects of mixing ratio, tensile strength (TS), elongation (E) at break, total color difference (${\Dalta}E$), opacity, water vapor permeability (WVP), oxygen permeability (OP), and thermal properties on chitosan/gelatin blend films properties were investigated. TS, E, ${\Dalta}E$, opacity, WVP, and OP values were 58.24-22.01 MPa, 13.11-24.67%, 1.86-17.45, 0.3104-1.2161 nmO.D./${\mu}m$, $1.6875-1.7225ng{\cdot}m/m^{2}{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$, and $2.2380{\times}10^{-7}-2.2975{\times}10^{-7}\;mL{\cdot}{\mu}m/m^{2}{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$, respectively. TS of blend films decreased, while E, ${\Dalta}E$, and opacity increased with increasing chitosan content. WVP of blend films did not show any significant relationship with mixing ratio and thickness of blend films. Miscibility of films was examined over entire composition range by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). TGA results showed gelatin is more thermally stable than chitosan and some interactions among functional groups of two biopolymers. Glass transition temperature $(T_{2})$ of films as determined by DMA decreased with increasing content of chitosan in the blend. Results of thermal analysis indicate high miscibility among polymer components in the blend.

  • Polyurethane(PU) have an excellent flexibility and toughness so that it has been widely used as an elastomer. PMMA was blended with PU to improve the impact property. Five types of PU, having different molecular weight and different polyol types, were prepared and blended with PMMA in order to investigate the effect of molecular weight and polyol type of PU on property of PU-PMMA blend. Tensile strength of PU-PMMA blend was determined by Inston. Differential Scanning Calorymetry(DSC) and Scanning. Elctron Microscopy(SEM) were used to observe morphology change and glass transition temperature changes of PU-PMMA blends. Transparency of PU-PMMA blends was determined by haze meter. But, owing to intrinsic incompatability of PU-PMMA, Low impact strength of PMMA wasn't improved through PU-PMMA blend. therefore, polyurethane dimethacrylate(PUD), having similiar chemical structure to PU and two vinyl group at both ends, was prepared and reacted with methyl methacrylate(MMA) to form crosslinked copolymer Mechanical property of this crosslinked polymer, such as impact strength and transparency, was investigated by Instron, Izod type (Cantilever beam) impact tester and haze meter. Results of these measurements showed that crosslinked copolymer of PUD-MMA was better impact resistance than PMMA and maintained similar transparency to PMMA.

  • Compatability of films made of chitosan, gelatin, and their blends prepared by aqueous solution casting was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). TGA showed gelatin is more thermally stable than chitosan, and thermal stability of chitosan in blends was higher than that of pure chitosan due to interaction among functional groups of component polymers in blend. Glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ of blends was dependent on chitosan content of blends. Blend films exhibited good miscibility. Moisture and glycerol contents of blend strongly affected thermal properties of two component polymers.

  • Molecular relaxation behaviors of crystalline glucose anhydrous, crystalline glucose monohydrate, and amorphous glucose with different particle sizes were observed by measuring spin-spin relaxation time constant $(T_2)$ at the temperature range of $-20\;to\;110^{\circ}C$ using temperature-controlled low field nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. No change in $T_2$ values of crystalline glucose anhydrous was observed throughout the temperature range, whereas $T_2$ values of crystalline glucose monohydrate and amorphous glucose increased from around $45\;and\;65^{\circ}C$, respectively. These results indicate that molecular mobility of crystalline glucose anhydrous does not change even at temperature higher than $100^{\circ}C$ and that the stability of powdered glucose could be improved by increasing the particle size of materials.

  • To determine the effect of chemical structure of linear amine curing agents on thermal and mechanical properties, standard epoxy resin DGEBA was cured with diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM), diaminodiphenyl sulphone (DDS) in a stoichiometrically equivalent ratio. From this work, the effect of aromatic amine curing agents. In contrast, the results show that the DGEBA/DDS cure system having the sulfone structure between the benzene rings had higher values in the conversion of epoxide, density, shrinkage (%), glass transition temperature, tensile modulus and strength, flexural modulus and strength than the DGEBA/DDM cure system having methylene structure between the benzene rings, whereas the DGEBA/DDM cure system presented higher values in the maximum exothermic temperature, thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal stability. These results are caused by the relative effects of sulfone group having strong electronegativity and methylene group having (+) repulsive property and stem from the effect of the conversion ratio of epoxide group. The result of fractography shows that the each grain size of the DDM/DGEBA system with feather-like structure is larger than that of the DDS/DGEBA system.

  • $Cd_2GeSe_4$ and $Cd_2GeSe_4:Co^{2+}$ films were prepared on indium-tin-oxide(ITO)-coated glass substrates by using thermal evaporation. The crystallization was achieved by annealing the as-deposited films in flowing nitrogen. X-ray diffraction spectra showed that the $Cd_2GeSe_4$ and the $Cd_2GeSe_4:Co^{2+}$ films were preferentially grown along the (113) orientation. The crystal structure was rhomohedral(hexagonal) with lattice constants of $a=7.405\;{\AA}$ and $c=36.240\;{\AA}$ for $Cd_2GeSe_4$ and $a=7.43\;{\AA}$ and $c=36.81\;{\AA}$ for $Cd_2GeSe_4:Co^{2+}$ films. From the scanning electron microscope images, the $Cd_2GeSe_4$ and $Cd_2GeSe_4:Co^{2+}$ films were plated, and the grain size increased with increasing annealing temperature. The optical energy band gap, measured at room temperature, of the as-deposited $Cd_2GeSe_4$ films was 1.70 eV and increased to about 1.74 eV and of the as-deposited $Cd_2GeSe_4:Co^{2+}$ films was 1.79 eV and decreased to about 1.74 eV upon annealing in flowing nitrogen at temperatures from $200^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$. The dynamical behavior of the charge carriers in the $Cd_2GeSe_4$ and $Cd_2GeSe_4:Co^{2+}$ films were investigated by using the photoinduced discharge characteristics technique.
