In this paper, we suggest a noise estimation method for speech enhancement in nonstationary noisy environments. The proposed method consists of the following two main processes. First, in order to receive fewer affect of variable signals, a best fitting regression line is used, which is obtained by applying a least squares method to coefficient magnitudes in a node with a uniform wavelet packet transform. Next, in order to update the noise estimation efficiently, a differential forgetting factor and a correlation coefficient per subband are used, where subband is employed for applying the weighted value according to the change of signals. In particular, this method has the ability to update the noise estimation by using the estimated noise at the previous frame only, without utilizing the statistical information of long past frames and explicit nonspeech frames by voice activity detector. In objective assessments, it was observed that the performance of the proposed method was better than that of the compared (minima controlled recursive averaging, weighted average) methods. Furthermore, the method showed a reliable result even at low SNR.

This paper presents a real-time haptic rendering method for multi-contact interaction with virtual environments. Haptic systems often employ physics-based deformation models such as finite-element models and mass-spring models which demand heavy computational overhead. The haptic system can be designed to have two sampling times, T and JT, for the haptic loop and the graphic loop, respectively. A multi-rate output-estimation with an exponential forgetting factor is proposed to implement real-time haptic rendering for the haptic systems with two sampling rates. The computational burden of the output-estimation increases rapidly as the number of contact points increases. To reduce the computation of the estimation, the multi-rate output-estimation with reduced parameters is developed in this paper. Performance of the new output-estimation with reduced parameters is compared with the original output-estimation with full parameters and an exponential forgetting factor. Estimated outputs are computed from the estimated input-output model at a high rate, and trace the analytical outputs computed from the deformation model. The performance is demonstrated by simulation with a linear tensor-mass model.

In this paper, Experience Sensitive Cumulative Neural Network (ESCNN) is introduced, which can cumulate the same or similar experiences. As the same or similar training patterns are cumulated in the network, the system recognizes more important information in the training patterns. The functions of forgetting less important information and attending more important information resided in the training patterns are surveyed and implemented by simulations. The system behaves well under the noisy circumstances due to its forgetting and/or attending properties, even in 50 percents noisy environments. This paper also describes the creation of the generalized patterns for the input training patterns.
This paper presents a phase portrait analysis-based safety control algorithm for excavators, using adaptive sliding mode control. Since working postures and material types cause the excavator's rotational inertia to vary, the rotational inertia was estimated, and this estimation was used to design an adaptive sliding mode controller for collision avoidance of the excavator. In order to estimate the rotational inertia, the recursive least-squares estimation with multiple forgetting was applied with the information of the swing velocity of the excavator. For realistic evaluation, an actual working scenario-based performance evaluation was conducted. Based on the estimated rotational inertia and an analysis of estimation errors, sliding mode control inputs were computed. The actual working scenario-based performance evaluation of the designed safety algorithm was conducted, and the results showed that the developed safety control algorithm can efficiently avoid a collision with an object in consideration of rotational inertia variations.

In this paper, a minimum variance control system is proposed and practically implemented, which is adequate to the induction motor speed control system with frequent load variation. Minimum variance control method is used as a control law and recursive least square method with selective forgetting factor is proposed and analyzed with general forgetting algorithm as an estimation method. Designed control system is based on PC-DSP structure for the purposed of easiness of applying adaptive algorithm. Through computer simulation and experimental results, it is verified that proposed control system is robust to the load variation and practical implementation is possible.
Li Zehou(李澤厚) regards Chuang-tzu's fatalism as a kind of pessimism and slavish conformism. The main issue of this paper is to opposes Li Zehou(李澤厚)'s view, and reveal that Chuang-tzu's fatalism is not the negative and slavish conformism but the true positivism of the fate. These Chuang-tzu's fatalism can be conceptualized as a 安之若命. When the human was faced with unavoidable fate, Chuang-tzu's 安之若命 is not pessimistically surrender itself to the fate such as a slave, but pleasantly accepts and affirms the fate. Now, the next three process proves that Chuang-tzu's 安之若命 affirms the fate. The attitude of 安之若命, First, takes the unavoidable(不得已) fate as it is. Second, it resolves a humane 'sadness and joy(哀樂)' through 'the forgetting(忘).' Third, it understands the life and death, the change of world, the human body as the stream of energy(氣). Fourth, in conclusion, it affirms the fate by these processes. These point of view can conceptualize as Chuang-tzu's Amor Fati. That is to say, Chuang-tzu' 安之若命 is not a pessimistic but a positive view of the fate.

This paper describes an acoustic communication receiver structure, which is designed for QPSK (Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) signal with 25 kHz carrier frequency and 5 kHz symbol rate, and takes samples from received signal at 100 kHz sampling rate. Based on the described receiver structure, optimum design parameters, such as number of taps of FF (Feed-Forward) and FB (Feed-Back) filters and forgetting factor of RLS (Recursive Least-Square) algorithm, of joint equalizer are determined to minimize the BER (Bit Error Rate) performance of the joint equalizer output symbols when the acquisition data in shallow water using implemented acoustic transducers is decimated at a rate of 2:1 and then enforced to the input of receiver. The transmission distances are 1.4 km, 2.9 km, and 4.7 km. Analysis results show that the optimum number of taps of FF and FB filters are different according to the distance between source and destination, but the optimum or near optimum value of forgetting factor is 0.997. Therefore, we can reach a conclusion that the proper receiver structure could change the number of taps of FF and FB filters with the fixed forgetting factor 0.997 according to the transmission distance. Another analysis result is that there are an acceptable performance degradation when the 16-tap-length simple filter is used as a low-pass filter of receiver instead of 161-tap-length matched filter.
In this paper, a new algorithm for adaptive IIR filters based on equation error methods using the RLS algorithm is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, the concept of feedback of the scaled output error proposed by tin and Unbehauen is employed and the forgetting factor is varied in adaptation process for avoiding the accumulation of the estimation error for additive noise . The proposed algorithm has the good convergence property without the parameter estimation error under the existence of mea-surement noise.
In this paper, it is shown that the dominant errors of baro-altimeters can be characterized by bias and scale factor errors. Also an optimal filter for estimating both bias and scale factor is derived based on the concept of model transition. The optimal filter is, however, not realizable because the model transition hypotheses increase exponentially. Therefore a realizable suboptimal filter using the interacting multiple model(IMM) technique is proposed. Computer simulation results show that the estimation errors of the proposed filter are smaller than those of the conventional least squares algorithm with a forgetting factor when both the bias and the scale factor are varying.
An adaptive model predictive control (AMPC) strategy using auto-regression moving-average (ARMA) models is presented. The characteristic features of this methodology are the small computer memory requirement, high computational speed, robustness, and easy handling of nonlinear and time varying MIMO systems. Since the process dynamic behaviors are expressed by ARMA models, the model parameter adaptation is simple and fast to converge. The recursive least square (RLS) method with exponential forgetting is used to trace the process model parameters assuming the process is slowly time varying. The control performance of the AMPC is verified by both comparative simulation and experimental studies on distillation column control.
