  • The East Asian Observatory (EAO) was established in 2014 by the East Asian Core Observatories Association (EACOA). The goal of the EAO is to build and operate world-class facilities on behalf of the East Asian regions, as a counterpart to the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Leading astronomical facilities such as ALMA, TMT, GMT, and SKA are mega projects which require enormous economic resources. It is difficult for any observatory or any country to fund such facilities on its own. EAO intends to combine the resources and manpower in our East Asian regions, in order to play a leading role in the next generation frontier instruments. The EACOA institutes: NAOC, NAOJ, KASI, and ASIAA, have authorized the EAO to take on the operations of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) on Mauna Kea as their first joint venture. In this talk, we will report on the development of EAO, our current operations of JCMT, and our future aspirations.

  • Since its defeat in the Second World War, Japan has been fostering good ties with Western countries, especially the United States. However, some East Asian leaders emboldened by their countries' economic success have proclaimed that the future belongs to Asia and have put forward the "Asian values" argument. It is interesting to note that some elements of the "Asian values" argument resemble ultranationalist discourse that was dominant in Japan before the war. The Japanese Government had a great opportunity to reappraise its role in international politics and take stock of its economic and diplomatic relations with East Asian countries after the end of the Cold War. To meet future challenges, Japan should fully overcome anti-Western sentiment and participate in establishing a truly democratic East Asian regionalism based on the "universal values" of human rights, democracy and freedom. This may prove to be one of the biggest challenges for Japan's East Asia policy in the new century.

  • The concept of health has existed through the history of mankind; the recognition and adaptation of such concept has transformed over time with the development of culture throughout the age of humans. These concept wasn't absent in the content East Asian Medicines, which is represented by Huangdi's Internal Classic. However, due to imperialism and colonial polocies in the past, biomedical concepts of health has been accepted with force. The concept of "health" in pathological medicines of biomedicine refers to the of anatomical and biological completeness of the body system. In East Asia, Korean especially, a number of concepts regarding these subjects has been informed by Japanese physicians, such as Hukujawa Yukichi. Understanding the idea of body in the angle of philosophy, history, and medicine in the cultural area of East Asia is necessary.

  • In May 2023, a free-living marine nematode species from the genus Parapinnanema was identified in the subtidal zone of Ulleungdo Island, the East Sea, Korea. Specimens were collected using the Smith-McIntyre Grab. These specimens exhibited close similarities to Parapinnanema imbricatum from the sublittoral of Moneron Island, particularly in terms of general characteristics, such as the detailed structure of the buccal cavity, the complex and ringed structure of the cuticle, the copulatory apparatus, spinneret, and the female genital system. However, the Korean specimens of Parapinnanema imbricatum also displayed distinctive features compared to the original description, including a relatively elongated body (3,317-4,339 ㎛ vs. 3,100-4,200 ㎛) and a narrower body width (66-77 ㎛ vs. 71-85 ㎛). Additionally, the diameter of the head was relatively shorter(24-29 ㎛ vs. 28-36 ㎛). This paper offers a comprehensive morphological description, along with illustrations and DIC photomicrographs, of P. imbricatum from Korean waters.

  • Based on the Results of Annual Monitoring Report of Korean Marine Environment in 2006, it was shown that the coastal area of the East Sea around Korean peninsula could be clearly divided into two parts: the area of upwelling and the North Korean Cold Current. In the upwelling area, the chlorophyll-a and nutrients were increased by the influence of the decrease of temperature and the increase of salinity. These mean that the appearance of cold water due to the upwelling causes nutrient rich water and also resulted in the high productivity.

  • A simple analytical model is considered in an attempt to demonstrate a formation mechanism of the abyssal current in the East Sea. In this model, the abyssal currents are driven by wind through an outcrop region and flow along closed geostrophic contours. A rough estimate of the abyssal currents, arrived at by applying this model to the region of deep mixing in the East Sea, gives currents comparable to those observed, although there is an uncertainty in the surface area of the outcrop region. It seems that the spin-up of deep water by wind forcing through the region of deep winter mixing is, at least partly, an important contribution to the formation of the abyssal currents in the East Sea.

  • Objective : This study aimed to investigate differential cancer incidence among Sasangin comparing to healthy subjects in the Republic of Korea. Methods : The medical records of 169 patients who had taken diagnosis of Sasang constitution from October 2004 to January 2007 at the East-West Cancer Center in Dunsan Oriental Hospital of Daejeon University were reviewed. Diagnosis was done by Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution ClassificationII (QSCCII). Results : Among the 169 patients, 37.9%, 22.5% and 39.6% belonged to Soyangin, Taeumin and Soeumin, respectively. This is significantly different from the distribution rate of Sasang in amonghealthy subjects (29.1%, 46.9% and 24.0% respectively to Soyangin, Taeumin and Soeumin). This pattern appeared in a similar way among individual cancer analysis: breast cancer (37.5%, 21.9%, 40.6%), colon cancer (41.7%, 20.8% 37.5%), and HCC (35.0%, 20.0%, 45.0%). Stomach cancer typically showed remarkable incidence in Soeumin as high as 50.0% and lung cancer showed in Soyangin as high 46.7%, but it didn't have statistical significance. The mean age of 50.9 years was higher than for healthy people (46.3). Conclusion : Sasang distribution of cancer patients is different from that of healthy subjects. Further study is needed on individual cancers.

  • Abnormal cooling of the Korean East Sea Water(KESW) in the East Sea before and after the 1982-1983 and 1997-1998 ENSO events is examined using bimonthly routine observation data from the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute of Korea for the period 1965 to 2002. The KESW, which occupies roughly a region between the Korean Peninsula and west of approximately $131^{\circ}E$, showed extreme cold-state years(1981 and 1996) prior to the two strongest ENSO events of the last half-century. Inter-annual bimonthly mean anomalies at 100 m in the KESW region were $-3.10^{\circ}C\;and\;-3.41^{\circ}C(SD=1.4^{\circ}C)$ in 1981 and 1996, respectively. These results suggest that extreme cooling of the KESW may be a prelude to very strong ENSO events through large-scale teleconnections.

  • Objective : The use of herbal therapy is becoming an increasingly attractive approach for the treatment of various inflammatory disorders. The Alpiniae officinari Rhizoma is popular in Aisa as a traditional herbal medicine. Alpiniae officinari Rhizoma is a species of the ginger family(Zingiberacease). Method : This study was performed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of Alpiniae officinari Rhizoma extract by the methods of 'carrageenan induced paw edema' and 'Lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory mediators in mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells'. Result : We suggest that Alpiniae officinari Rhizoma extract decreased paw volume induced by plantar injection of carrageenan. Also Alpiniae officinari Rhizoma extract inhibited nitric oxide, prostaglandin $E_2$ production and induced nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2 protein expression in Mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. Conclusion : This study shows that Alpinia officinari Rhizoma extract seems to have anti-inflammatory effect by inhibition of nitric oxide, prostaglandin $E_2$ production and nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2 protein expression.
