  • This study aims to research the indication way and contents description of grammar presented in Korean textbooks. Therefore we examine the common elements of grammar in four Korean textbooks and the transcription, notation methods and meaning descriptions the books use to present grammar items. After analyzing Korean textbooks for the beginner level, we found just 20 similar items among a total of 100-150 grammar items. Advanced researches required to examine the selection and classification of grammatical items in Korean education. The results show that it used as the same name "grammar" expressed in Korean textbooks compared to using different names in the past. We consider that just 20 grammar items are the same because the range of grammar items in every textbook is different including vocabulary, sentences etc. The study found that grammar items are expressed differently in the type of indication way, order of arrangement, and marks. We suggest that it is better to indicate the style of representation used in grammar items because an additional problem such as type of indication way, order of arrangement is removed by doing so. The study also found grammar items are expressed differently in the meaning description and grammar range of explanation of Korean textbooks. This study suggests that morphological information, restriction information and meaning should be described at a basic level. This study allows us to consider the indication way and contents description of grammar are presented in Korean textbooks.

  • Given that cognitive demands of mathematical tasks can be changed during instruction, this study attempts to provide a detailed description to explore how tasks are set up and implemented in the classroom and what are the classroom-based factors. As an exploratory and qualitative case study, 4 of six-grade classrooms where high-level tasks on ratio and proportion were used were videotaped and analyzed with regard to the patterns emerged during the task setup and implementation. With regard to 16 tasks, four kinds of Patterns emerged: (a) maintenance of high-level cognitive demands (7 tasks), (b) decline into the procedure without connection to the meaning (1 task), (c) decline into unsystematic exploration (2 tasks), and (d) decline into not-sufficient exploration (6 tasks), which means that the only partial meaning of a given task is addressed. The 4th pattern is particularly significant, mainly because previous studies have not identified. Contributing factors to this pattern include private-learning without reasonable explanation, well-performed model presented at the beginning of a lesson, and mathematical concepts which are not clear in the textbook. On the one hand, factors associated with the maintenance of high-level cognitive demands include Improvising a task based on students' for knowledge, scaffolding of students' thinking, encouraging students to justify and explain their reasoning, using group-activity appropriately, and rethinking the solution processes. On the other hand, factors associated with the decline of high-level cognitive demands include too much or too little time, inappropriateness of a task for given students, little interest in high-level thinking process, and emphasis on the correct answer in place of its meaning. These factors may urge teachers to be sensitive of what should be focused during their teaching practices to keep the high-level cognitive demands. To emphasize, cognitive demands are fixed neither by the task nor by the teacher. So, we need to study them in the process of teaching and learning.

  • $Ch\acute{e}n\;Xiuyu\acute{a}n$(陳修園) was a famous doctor and educator of the late Tang Dynasty. He was well known both for his books for beginners, and for his unique medical theories based on his profound research of <$Sh\bar{a}ngh\acute{a}nl\grave{u}n$(傷寒論)> and <$J\bar{i}nku\grave{i}y\grave{a}ol\ddot{u}e$>. He wrote <$Y\bar{i}xues\bar{a}nz\grave{i}j\bar{i}ng$(醫學三字經)> to establish the basic textbook for the beginners to set up right principles in pursuing their medical career. <$Y\bar{i}xues\bar{a}nz\grave{i}j\bar{i}ng$> was written in rhyme form, so that it can be easily memorized and used in future practices. There are quite many medical books in rhyme form, but this book is very unique as $Ch\acute{e}n\;Xiuyu\acute{a}n$ annotated his own notes, which is rare in this form of books. This feature makes <$Y\bar{i}xues\bar{a}nz\grave{i}j\bar{i}ng$> very outstanding, also with the fact that $Ch\acute{e}n\;Xiuyu\acute{a}n$ was the one with profound understanding and original theories based on medical bibles such as <$N\grave{e}ij\bar{i}ng$(內經)> and <$Sh\bar{a}ngh\acute{a}nl\grave{u}n$(傷寒論)>. We have translated this precious educational material into korean, hoping that this work could be of any help to students of korean medicine. And while doing this work, we have found followings: <$Y\bar{i}xues\bar{a}nz\grave{i}j\bar{i}ng$> covers the entire fields of medicine from theoretical discussions to practical clinical information. Nevertheless, as this is written in rhyme form, there are few phrases that are not easily understood for the sake of rhyme. Beginners probably may have difficulties in reading this book. To make this difficulty alleviated, and to develop our own educational material, we need to study further on the notes that $Ch\acute{e}n\;Xiuyu\acute{a}n$ annotated himself.

  • The purpose of the research was to find out the difference in students' academic achievement in Technology Education between students with a lecture, those who perform a content-related project after a lecture, and those who carry out a content-related project without a lecture. The results of this study are as follows. First, taking advantage of both a lecture and project-based lesson led to better achievement than using only a project in Technology Education subject of an academic high school in academic achievement in 'knowledge' area. I infer that it is because they reviewed what they had learned in a lecture and the preparation and practice of the project caused them to memorize it. Second, there was not a meaningful difference in academic achievement in 'understanding' area among the group with a lecture, the one with both a lecture and a project, and the one with only a project. However, considering the comparison of averages and the p-value of F-test, I can deduce that the test outcome influences students with a lecture and a project positively in terms of academic achievement. Third, there was not a meaningful difference in the academic achievement in 'adaptation' area among the group with a lecture, the one with a lecture and a project, and the one with a project. I can conclude that those results are because the difficulty level of evaluation was high and they produced a model just by copying textbook contents.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary school teachers' perception on application of STEAM education. For this study, a survey was administered to 80 primary teachers. The result showed as follows: First, even though, elementary school teachers have known about the meaning and aims of the STEAM education in detail, they often took a neutral attitude toward the actual teaching method. In addition, they take a negative attitude toward having the gathering. Second, only a few elementary school teachers prepared and used the teaching materials related to the STEAM education in class and teach students the concept based on the STEAM education. Only a few elementary school teachers said that they used the developed modules. However, the demand, developing the modules, was extremely high. This result means that the easy and available modules should be developed to establish the STEAM education. Third, only a few elementary school teachers applied the subject, activity, and estimation related to the STEAM education in actual class. Forth, even though, after applying, there much be the positive affects, most elementary school teachers could not recognize the positive affects. At the same time, elementary school teachers suggested the curriculum should be reorganized for students to connect between the results of the STEAM education and the contents of the textbook, and the easy and available program should be developed and spread, also. The attitude of elementary school teachers toward the application of the STEAM education was normally negative. Therefore, it is needed to include more STEAM related contents in the science textbooks and to develop various STEAM education materials and circulate them as well as to establish adequate teaching and assessment methods for STEAM education.

  • This study classified the visualization's materials presented in two types of middle school science textbooks to data visualization and infographics, thereafter characteristics of infographics according to science content's domains were analyzed using an analytical framework for infopraphics. The results of this study are as follows : First, visualization materials in middle school science textbooks had more data visualization (23.2%) than infographics (76.8%). Second, there were many differences in information content's category among the science subject's domains. The relationship type of information content in the domain of energy and matter, the function type in life domain, and the location type in the earth domain were prominent. In visual representation's category, the illustration type and comparative analysis type were the most dominant in the all science domains. The horizontal type in layout category occupied the largest proportion in all science domains. Therefore, it is necessary to present the visualization materials with the infographics conveying many informations than the data visualization in middle school science textbooks. And the infographics need to be developed and distributed in various formats in each science domain.

  • This study aims to analyze the impacts on self-regulated learning (SRL) and problem-solving (PS) competencies rather than learning achievement through the use of digital textbooks in the SMART learning environment. To achieve the objective, $3^{rd}$ and $4^{th}$ grade elementary and $1^{st}$ year middle school students were selected from 29 schools where the digital textbooks were utilized in the subjects of science in pilot schools in 2014. In this, One-Group Pretest-Posttest Designs were applied as a research method to analyze SRL and PS competencies. Additionally, the effect size of Cohen's d was presented in order to display the practical significance. The results showed the positive impacts on SRL and PS competencies, in spite of a small effect size of about 0.2 through the use of digital textbooks. ANCOVA was conducted to determine the difference in the impacts according to demographic variables. The results demonstrated that the difference in the impacts on both SRL and PS were statistically significant according to the grade and level. For SRL, both the elementary grade 4 and middle school students showed more significant differences than elementary grade 3. Moreover, for PS, the elementary grade 4 students showed the most significant difference.

  • This paper tries to examine differences between geography classes taught by majored and non-majored teacher and to find problems in the latter case, tv observing four middle school geography classes in Seoul, from April to May 2003. The observation was fecund on (1) organization of a class (2) dialogue between teacher and students (3) strategy of explanation. In addition, the author conducted personal interviews with social studies teachers in the schools where the observations were made. The analyses of the observed classes were made by micro-ethnographic research method. Major findings of the observation and analysis are as follows. First, the transition from one topic to another topic was not smooth in the case of non-majored teacher class. Second, the questions that the non-majored teacher posed in the classroom played less significant role in keeping up the class in an organized fashion than those that the majored teacher posed. Third, the non-majored teacher focused on the concepts, terms and contents appeared in the textbook and simply tried to explain them, whereas the majored teacher demonstrated teaching methods such as comparing and contrasting cases to provide students with a more dynamic and comprehensive understanding on the topic they teamed. Fourth, the non-majored teacher used maps less frequently and less actively than the majored teacher. In addition, although the non-majored teachers are well aware of their problems in the class as a non-majored teacher, they think that the problems are inevitable in a given curriculum structure of social studies in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a pedagogic direction of home economics education that can form body image which organize self-concept of adolescents positively. To achieve this purpose, the study suggested a body image formation model of adolescents that can be applied to home economics education, and based on this formation model, analyzed contents on body image of current 12 textbooks of home economics education. The main results of this study are summarized as follows: First, to analyze textbook through body image formation model of adolescents, educational contents about body image were categorized into 4 constructs with 8 sub-categories. Second, we found the current textbooks about the child and family life field, food and dietary life field, and clothing life, are handling topics regarding body image formation model of adolescents, such as concepts and components of body image and antecedents and outcomes of body image. We conclude that although the current textbooks handles contents on body image of adolescents, those contents are sporadically presented across the three fields without an integrated perspective. Home Economics, as an entity of educating adolescents' self-esteem through daily life activities, needs to have a topic-oriented approach in developing a curriculum.
