Background: Statistical analysis is essential in regard to obtaining objective reliability for medical research. However, medical researchers do not have enough statistical knowledge to properly analyze their study data. To help understand and potentially alleviate this problem, we have analyzed the statistical methods and errors of articles published in the Korean Journal of Pain (KJP), with the intention to improve the statistical quality of the journal. Methods: All the articles, except case reports and editorials, published from 2004 to 2008 in the KJP were reviewed. The types of applied statistical methods and errors in the articles were evaluated. Results: One hundred and thirty-nine original articles were reviewed. Inferential statistics and descriptive statistics were used in 119 papers and 20 papers, respectively. Only 20.9% of the papers were free from statistical errors. The most commonly adopted statistical method was the t-test (21.0%) followed by the chi-square test (15.9%). Errors of omission were encountered 101 times in 70 papers. Among the errors of omission, "no statistics used even though statistical methods were required" was the most common (40.6%). The errors of commission were encountered 165 times in 86 papers, among which "parametric inference for nonparametric data" was the most common (33.9%). Conclusions: We found various types of statistical errors in the articles published in the KJP. This suggests that meticulous attention should be given not only in the applying statistical procedures but also in the reviewing process to improve the value of the article.
This paper introduces the design details and test procedures of the lightning induced transient protection device for protecting the damage caused by indirect lightning strike on the computer mounted on the aircraft. Lightning induced surge voltage is bring a malfunction or damage to the aircraft electrical and electronic equipment, that is referred to indirect effects of lightning. In addition, we show the indirect lightning effects verification test performed to validate the designed protection circuits.
A spray-type cleaning agent in utilizing dust-remover on PCB was chosen to study the cleanliness test and efficiency. In order to choose alternative environmental-friendly cleaning agents, it is important that the systematic selection procedures should be introduced and applied through the evaluation of their cleaning ability, environmental characteristics, and economical factors, and that the objective and effective evaluation methods of cleanliness should be established for the industry. A novel cleaning evaluation method with scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray analysis of surface observation evaluation method and an infra-red thermography camera(THERMOVISION A20 model) was studied in this work. The sound card(CT-2770 model) cut by $2{\times}2cm$ size was used as a part, and before and after the spray cleaning, the cleanliness was observed by the image analyzer of SEM and further the removal efficiency of dust was quantitatively evaluated by the component analysis of EDX. For the parts of P4TE model motherboard and IPC-A-36 PCB plate, before and after the spray cleaning, temperature differences were measured and compared at room temperature and 50 oven temperature by an infra-red thermography camera in the contaminants of dust and iron powder.

In this paper, breakdown voltages in $SF_6-N_2$ mixtures were experimentally investigated to understand characteristics of dielectric strength and physical phenomena in nonuniform field disturbed by a needle shape protrusion. The test voltages are the lightning impulse$(\pm1.2/44 \mus)$ and the damped oscillatory impulse$(\pm400 ns / 0.83 MHz)$ voltages which can be occurred by the operation of disconnecting switches in gas-insulated switchgears(GIS). The effects of the polarity and wave shape of the test voltages, and the gas pressure on the V-t characteristics were in detail examined. The V-t characteristic curves were measured in different two ways : (1) one is the method by taking the maximum voltage recorded at or prior to breakdown against the time to breakdown, that is, the Procedures recommended in IEC 60060-1, (2) the other is the method by taking the voltage at the instant of chopping against the time to breakdown. As a result, the V-t characteristics of $SF_6-N_2$ mixtures in nonuniform electric field were significantly affected by the polarity and wave shape of the applied voltages. The positive breakdown voltages resulted in lower breakdown voltages in the time ranges considered, and the V-t curves for the negative oscillatory impulse voltage were extended over the longer time range. For the lightning impulse voltages, the V-t curves obtained by IEC Pub. 60060-1 were nearly same with the V-t curves obtained by the voltage at the instant of chopping against the time to breakdown. It is clear that the actual breakdown voltages were much lower than the maximum voltages appearing at or prior to breakdown because of the displacement current produced as a result of the dV/dt during the oscillatory transient voltage app1ication. The scattering of the negative actual breakdown voltages was much larger than that of the positive.

Although a number of methods have been proposed to predict the liquefaction potential, few methods have been developed by using the characteristic of material's microstructure. In this research, fundamental procedure is proposed for the assessment of liquefaction potential in saturated soils based on the Disturbed Sate Concept(DSC) model which can provide a unified constitutive model for the characterization of entire stress-strain behavior under cyclic loading. From this concept, the value of disturbance at threshold state (Critical Disturbance, $D_C$) in the deforming microstructure provides the basis for initial liquefaction. This method is verified with respect to data from Cyclic Truly Triaxial test for saturated Ottawa sand. Also, the relationship between liquefaction and initial confinig stress is defined using definition of $D_C$. It is believed that the new procedure for identifying liquefaction based on the DSC model can capture the behavior of liquefation, and as a result, it is shown to be on improvement over the available empirical procedures.

In this paper, we propose a new procedure for improvement of the linear predictive coding. To reduce the error power incurred by the coding, we interchanged the order of the two procedures of windowing on the signal and linear prediction. This scheme corresponds to LPC extraction with windowed autocorrelation. The proposed method requires more calculational time because it necessitates matrix inversion on more parameters than the conventional technique where an efficient Levinson-Durbin recursive procedure is applicable with smaller parameters. Experimental test over various speech phonemes showed, however, that our procedure yields about 5 % less power distortion compared to the conventional technique. Consequently, the proposed method in this paper is thought to be preferable to the conventional technique as far as the fidelity is concerned. In a separate study of speaker-dependent speech recognition test for 50 isolated words pronounced by 40 people, our approach yielded better performance too.

PURPOSE. Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns provide the best treatment option for teeth that have a large or defective restoration. More than 20% of teeth with PFM crowns or bridges require non-surgical root canal treatment (NSRCT). This may be due to the effect of restorative procedures and the possible leakage of bacteria and or their by-products, which leads to the demise of the tooth pulp. Thus, this study was planned to compare the ability of the restorative materials to seal perforated PFM specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The study evaluates the ability of amalgam, composite or compomer restorative materials to close perforated PFM specimen's in-vitro. Ninety PFM specimens were constructed using Ni-Cr alloys and feldspathic porcelain, and then they were divided into 3 groups: amalgam (A), composite + Exite adhesive bond (B) and compomer + Syntac adhesive bond (C). All the PFM samples were embedded in an acrylic block to provide complete sealing of the hole from the bottom side. After the aging period, each group was further divided into 3 equal subgroups according to the thermocycling period (one week for 70 cycles, one month for 300 cycles and three months for 900 cycles). Each subgroup was put into containers containing dye (Pelikan INK), one maintained at $5^{\circ}C$ and the other at $55^{\circ}C$, each cycle for 30 sec time. The data obtained was analyzed by SPSS, 2006 using one way ANOVA test and student t-test and significant difference level at (P<.01). RESULTS. The depth of dye penetration was measured at the interfaces of PFM and filling materials using Co-ordinate Vernier Microscope. The lowest levels of the dye penetration for the three groups, as well as subgroups were during the first week. The values of dye leakage had significantly increased by time intervals in subgroups A and C. CONCLUSION. It was seen that amalgam showed higher leakage than composite while compomer showed the lowest level of leakage.
Laser photobiostimulation (LPBS) is one of the recent additions to therapeutic procedures used in chronic pain management. Though widely used, a clear understanding of its mechanism of action was not disclosed. In addition, the energy density that produces maximal benefit has not yet been established. The purposes of this study were to determine the effects of LPBS on pain relief in rat and to determine treatment dosage. Eight, 8-week old female, Sprague-Dawley rats were employed. All subjects were assigned to one of four groups: a sham laser group, a 0.4 $J/cm^2$ laser group, a 2.0 $J/cm^2$ laser group, and a 6.0 $J/cm^2$ laser group. Ga-As laser (904 nm wavelength) of three different energy densities (0.4, 2.0, 6.0 $J/cm^2$) was applied on a tail acupuncture point and tail-flick latencies were measured five times pre-and post-treatment as following schedules: 30 minutes, 1 hour. 24 hours. 48 hours, and 7 days later. An increase in pain threshold was demonstrated following LPBS, employing rat tail-flick test. LPBS of 2.0 $J/cm^2$ produced hypoalgesia of rapid onset and short duration (1 hour, 24 hours) while the response to 6.0 $J/cm^2$ was delayed and lasted longer (48 hours, 7 days). LPBS of 0.4 $J/cm^2$ did not produce any hypoalgesia.

Ecological lightweight aggregates were made in order to recycle the dredged soils from the seaside construction area and the bottom ashes from the power plant. Various physical and chemical analysis were performed on them to identify their possibility for applying lightweight concrete fields. Lightweight aggregates were made of bottom ashes and dredged soils from Yongheung Island which is located 20km west away from Seoul, and all the raw materials were milled before mixing. The physical and chemical properties such as density, absorption rate, stability, alkali latency reaction, heavy metal leaching of the lightweight aggregates were tested and analysed by following the KS standard procedures. From the size analysis, the coarse aggregates showed a suitable fit on standard particle ranges; however, the fine aggregates showed a large deviation from the standard. The absorption rates were increased with decreasing weight of the aggregates. All the aggregates were turned out to be safe by the stability and heavy metal leaching test; however, some of the aggregates were confirmed on the border of harmless and possibly harmful region through the alkali latency reactivity test.

As the number of CFRD constructions increases, the necessity of an accurate assessment on its behavior also has been increasing accordingly. The performance of concrete faced rockfill dam (CFRD) under different water levels is greatly concerned by dam engineers and designers in the world. However, domestic research on CFRD design and construction has yet been insignificant. This study deals with three centrifuge model tests, mainly investigates the deformation of the concrete faced slabs with different face slab stiffness under different water levels. The prototype of a centrifugal model dam is half size of domestic CFRD dam. Detailed material preparation, model design, model set-up, model instrumentation and testing procedures are presented. In order to simulate the prototype concrete faced slab, three kinds of thin fiberglass plates with different thickness was adopted in the three model tests. The water level control facility was specially designed for this experiment to control the water level rise and drawdown during centrifuge flight. Although most of the results from the three model tests are satisfactory, it is also required that the centrifuge test results should be compared with those of numerical analysis and field measurements to analyze the centrifuge test results more in detail.
