Relationship of Self-esteem, Meaning in Life, and Spiritual Well-being in Middle School Students (중학생이 지각한 자아존중감, 생의 의미 및 영적 안녕에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among self-esteem, meaning in life, and spiritual well-being in middle school students. Methods: The research design was a descriptive correlational survey involving 405 middle school students in grades 1 to 3 in S city, K city, and C city. Data were collected from March to May 2008 using questionnaires. Means with standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan post-hoc test, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to analyze the data. Results: According to general characteristics of the students, there were statistically significant differences in self-esteem for gender, grade, and region, in meaning in life, there were significant differences for grade, gender, and region, and in spiritual well-being, there were statistically significant differences for gender, religion, and region. There were significant correlations between self-esteem and meaning in life, between self-esteem and spiritual well-being, and between meaning in life and spiritual well-being. Conclusion: Self-esteem, meaning in life, and spiritual well-being should be considered as important factors for healthy development in the middle school period. These three variables should be considered as the main content for self-development programs for middle school students.

Differences of Creativity in Engineering Students by Gender (공학 전공 대학생의 창의성에 나타나는 성차)

  • Recently, it has been emphasized that more girls should be able to contribute to society in the engineering field. However, there is little research for understanding the psychological characteristics of female engineering students. We first must understand their capabilities in order to take advantage of the strengths of female engineering college students. Based on this understanding, it is necessary to provide future educational interventions for them. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the gender differences in creativity in engineering education. Additionally, we wanted to know whether the differences were domain-specific or domain-general differences. For this, we targeted 351 engineering students in Busan and Daegu. An integrated creativity test and engineering creativity test were carried out. It was found that female engineering students had lower scores on both the integrated creativity and engineering creativity tests than male students. These results suggest that we should develop and apply appropriate strategies to enhance the creativity of female students in engineering education.

Analysis of Middle School Students' Stress and Related Variables (청소년 스트레스에 대한 관련 변인 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of middle school students' stress in relation to certain variables, those of grade, gender, academic achievement, coping behavior and self-concept. The subjects were 574 students selected from 4 middle schools in the Incheon area. The instruments included a stress index, coping behavior questionnaire and self-concept inventory. The statistics used from this data were t-test, one-way ANOVA (Scheff test), correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. This study showed that middle school students' stress was influenced significantly by the grade, gender and achievement in school. Also, coping behavior and self-concept were influenced significantly by the grade, gender, and achievement in school. Correlation analysis indicated that student's stress and certain coping behavior were postively correlated, especially avoidance coping behavior indicated a higher correlation to students' stress than active coping behavior. The relationship between stress and self-concept indicated a negative high correlation. It was also found that avoidance coping behavior, family self-concept, general self-concept, school and class self-concept, grade and academic achievement were significant predictors of middle school students' stress.

University Students' Preference and Sensibility to Fetish Fabrics (대학생의 페티시 패션소재에 대한 선호도와 감성)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the students' preference and the sensibility to fetish fabrics such as leather, fur, velvet, suade, and corduroy, and to analyze differences according to gender of the university students. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 324 university students (male students 52.8%, female students 47.2%) in the Cheongju area, Korea. Frequency, t-test, F-test and factor analysis were used for data analysis. The results were as follows: 1) the subjects preferred velvet, leather and suede fabrics, while they did not prefer corduroy and fur fabrics. 2) Their feelings to fetish fabrics were respectively different depending on the kind of fabrics. 3) There were partially significant differences between the gender in the preference and the sensibility to fetish fabrics. 4) They evaluated that velvet fabrics could express a variety of sensibilities. 5) They considered that fabrics as velvet, leather, and fur have more noble and fanciful images than corduroy.

Relationship between the number of remaining teeth and depression in Korean adults (한국 성인의 잔존 치아 수와 우울증의 관련성)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between the number of remaining teeth and depression in Korean adults. Methods: The subjects were the respondents of the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES). The questionnaire consisted of the general characteristics of the subjects, number of remaining teeth, and prevalence of depression. relationship of the prevalence of depression and the number of remaining teeth. The data were analyzed by chi-square test, t-test, and logistic regression using SPSS, and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Results: There was a significant difference in number of remaining teeth and odds ratio(OR) was 1.940(95% confidence interval: 1.062-3.544). Statistically significant difference was not observed after adjusting for age and gender and OR was 1.515(95% confidence interval: 0.823-2.787). And Statistically significant difference was not observed after adjusting for age, gender and other variables. The OR was 1.399(95% confidence interval: 0.757-2.586). Conclusions: Depression in the adults was related to the number of remaining teeth. But there was no significant difference in the number of remaining teeth after adjusted for age, gender, and other factors.

A Comparison of Time Use and Time Famine for Male and Female Employed and Unemployed College Students (대학생의 취업여부별 시간사용과 시간부족감의 성차 분석)

  • This study was aimed at exploring the differences in time use and time famine among college students ages 18 to 29, with a focus on gender and employment status, and to investigate the determinants of time famine. Data were from the 2014 Time Use Survey by the Korea National Statistical Office. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, t-test, and logistic regression were used for the statistical analyses. The major findings are as follows. First, the employed spend significantly more time on work and less time studying than the unemployed, and females spend significantly more time on household work and less time on leisure than males. Second, employed students had higher levels of time famine than unemployed students. Third, irrespective of employment status, the education level of students' parents was identified as a determinant of time famine. Other determinants of time famine were age, job, work, and study time for employed students and gender, income, household work, and leisure time for unemployed students.

A Study on Gender Differences in Influencing Factors of Office Workers' Physical Activity (남성과 여성 사무직 근로자의 신체활동에 미치는 영향요인 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine gender differences in effects of self-efficacy, exercise benefits and barriers, and demographic factors on the physical activity. Methods: Seventy sedentary office workers, 35 male and 35 female, from a major airline company, completed a questionnaire from March 28 to April 5, 2012. Steps and body mass indices were measured using a CW-700/701 (Yamax) pedometer and Inbody 720 (Biospace), respectively. Data were analyzed using t-test, $x^2$-test, multiple linear regression, and simultaneous quantile regression. Results: For male workers, exercise self-efficacy had a significant effect on physical activity, but only when respondents were at 10%(3,431 steps/day, p=.018) and 25%(4,652 steps/day, p=.044) of the physical activity distribution. For female workers, marital status was significantly related to physical activity, but only when respondents were at 10% (3,537 steps/day, p=.013) and 25%(3,862 steps/day, p=.014) of the physical activity distribution. Conclusion: Quantile regression highlights the heterogeneous effect of physical activity determinants among office workers. Therefore intervention strategies for increasing physical activity should be tailed to genders as well as physical activity levels.

Relationship between High School Students' Mental·Social Health and Tendency toward Social Networking Addiction (고등학생의 정신·사회건강과 SNS 중독경향성)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the relationship between high school students' mental social health and their tendency toward social networking addiction. Methods: The subjects were 543 high school boys and girls living in D city. The data were collected from the 3rd to 21st of March in 2014. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Duncan's post-hoc test, Pearson's correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression with SPSS/ Win 21.0. Results: Social networking addiction showed significant differences depending on gender (t=-7.03, p<.001), academic achievement (t=4.571, p=.011), and the level of maternal education (t=3.344, p=.019). Social health was correlated with the tendency toward social networking addiction. Multiple regression analysis found that gender, academic achievement and social health were associated with the level of social networking addiction (F=8.750, p<.001, Adj. $R^2=.201$). Conclusion: The results suggest that it is necessary to take into account gender characteristics, academic achievement and social health in order to develop effective management programs for social networking addiction among high school students.

Influences of Alcoholic Use Disorder, Family Cohesion and Self-esteem on Mental Health among University Students (대학생의 알코올 사용장애, 가족응집력, 자아존중감이 정신건강에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the Influences of Alcoholic Use Disorder, Family cohesion and Self-esteem on Mental health among University Students. Methods: Data were collected through questionnaires from 468 students and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Results: As defined by alcoholic use disorder, the proportion of dependent group was 3.6%, disorder group was 16.9%, and genral group was 79.5%. The levels of alcoholic use disorder depended on gender and residence type. The levels of mental health depended on gender, family income and academic achievement. The mental health was significantly correlated with family cohesion and self-esteem. The influential factors affecting mental health were self-esteem, academic achievement, gender, which explained about 44.8% of the variance. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that nursing intervention are needed to improve mental health and alcohol use disorder and that such variables should be carefully considered in intervention for university students.

The effect of equity in decision-making and gender role attitudes on marital satisfaction of Chinese migrant women (중국출신 결혼이주여성의 의사결정 공정성인식과 성역할태도가 부부관계만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: This study examined the effects of perceived equity in decision-making and gender role attitudes on marital satisfaction among Chinese-Han and Korean-Chinese migrant women. Methods: Data were drawn from the 'National Survey on the Multi-Cultural Families in 2015' and 1,350 Chinese migrant women born after 1979 under the implementation of "one child policy" were selected. Chi-squared test, t-test, and multiple regression analysis were performed for analysis. Results: There were differences between Chinese-Han and Korean-Chinese in marital satisfaction and perceived equity in decision-making. For Chinese-Han, 'balanced group (perceived fairness in decision-making)' showed higher marital satisfaction than 'underbenefited group (husband is more dominant in decision-making)'. For Korean-Chinese, there was no significant difference between the groups. Conclusions: This study found how the perception of equity in decision-making would affect the quality of international marriage relationship. Especially, for Chinese-Han women, the equity plays an important role in marriage relationship.
