Recently, the terrestrial laser scanner is considered as useful measurement equipment for acquiring a three-dimensional data. In this study, a terrestrial laser scanner which has +/- 2.5cm accuracy is examined whether the terrestrial laser scanner is reliable to present the tendency of landslide movement. The test area is covered by protection blocks, and they are being moved by landslide movement. Landslide movement was detected by measuring the movement of protection blocks. Totally three scenes of test area were acquired during 2004 and 2006. The three scenes of the protection blocks were registered in global coordinate system, then the landslide movement was investigated. The landslide movement detected in the three scenes was evaluated by comparing with landslide movement measured by a total station. Although the measurement accuracy of landslide using the terrestrial laser scanner was worse than the total station, the scanning data showed the tendency of landslide movement of the test area.
3D terrestrial laser scanners record high precision three-dimensional coordinates of numerous points on an object surface in a short period of time, and is applied to a wide variety of fields including geodesy, and civil engineering, archaeology and architecture, and emergency service and defence, etc. However, most of terrestrial laser scanner utilized in homeland, were imported from foreign country, and also was not authorized formally as the surveying instrument. Therefore, standard test facility to calibrate and perform its evaluation in order to utilize it in a variety of fields is required. This study deals with the test facility of foreign countries for terrestrial laser scanner and suggest the establishment scheme of domestic test facility.

Laser scanning technology with high positional accuracy and high density will be widely applied to vast range of fields including geomatics. Especially, the development of laser scanning technology enabling long range information extraction is increasing its full use in civil engineering. This study taps into the strengths of a terrestrial laser scanning technique to develop a tunnel cross section management system that can be practically employed for determining the cross section of tunnels more promptly and accurately. Three dimensional data with high density were obtained in a prompt and accurate manner using a terrestrial laser scanner. Data processing was then conducted to promptly determine arbitrary cross sections at 0.1meter, 0.5meter and 1.0meter intervals. A laser scanning technique was also used to quickly and accurately calculate the overbreak and underbreak of both each cross section and the entire tunnel section. As the developed system utilizes vast amounts of data, it was possible to promptly determine the shape of arbitrary cross section and to calculate the overbreak and underbreak more accurately with higher area precision. It is expected, therefore, that the system will not only enable more efficient and cost effective tunnel drilling management and monitoring but also will provide a basis for future construction and management of tunnel cross section.
Recently, a method that applies laser scanning (LS) that acquires vegetation information such as the vegetation habitat area and the size of vegetation in a point cloud format has been proposed. When LS is used to investigate the physical shape of vegetation, it has the advantage of more accurate and rapid information acquisition. However, to examine uncertainties that may arise during measurement or post-processing, the process of adjusting the data by the actual data is necessary. Therefore, in this study, the physical structure of stems, branches, and leaves of woody vegetation in an artificially formed river channel was manually investigated. The obtained results then compared with the information acquired using the three-dimensional terrestrial laser scanning (3D TLS) method, which repeatedly scanned the target vegetation in various directions to obtain relevant information with improved precision. The analysis demonstrated a negligible difference between the measurements for the diameters of vegetation and the length of stems; however, in the case of branch length measurement, a relatively more significant difference was observed. It is because the implementation of point cloud information limits the precise differentiation between branches and leaves in the canopy area.
It was previously introduced a new displacement measuring technique using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) that remotely samples the surface of an object using laser pulses and generates the three-dimensional (3D) coordinates of numerous points on the surface. In this paper, for an assessment of the capabilities of the measuring technique about existing structures, the field tests for vertical displacement measurement of an existing long span steel box-girder are experimentally carried out. The performance of the technique is evaluated by comparing the displacements obtained from TLS system and displacements directly measured from linear variable displacement transducer (LVDT).
More than 70% of Korean Peninsula is consisted of mountains, so that lots of roads, rail-roads and tunnel, which play a pivotal role in the industry activity, are existed along the rock-slope and in the rock-mass. Thus,it is urgent that tegration of management system through the optimum survey and design of rock-slope excavation, proper stabilization method and database of rock-slope. However, conventional methods have shortcoming with the economy of survey time and human resources, and the overcome of difficulties of approach to the in-situ rock-slope. To overcome the limitation of conventional method, this paper proposed the development of remote measurement system using Terrestrial Laser Scanning System. The method using Terrestrial 3D Laser Scanning System, which can get 3D spatial information on the rock-slope and2)Dept. Geosystem Engineering, Kangwon National University, Korea tunnel, has an advantage of reduction of measurement time and the overcome of difficulties of approach to the in-situ rock-slope/dam/tunnel. In the case of rock-slope, through the analysis of 3D modeling of point-cloud by Terrestrial Laser Scanning System, orientation of discontinuity, roughness of joint surface, failure shape and volume were successively achieved. in the case of tunnel face, through reverse-engineering, monitoring of displacement was possible.

A laser scanning technique has been attracting much attention as a new technology to acquire location information. This technique might be applicable to a wide range of areas, most notably in geomatics, due to its high accuracy of location and automation of high-density data acquisition. In this study, the coastline was extracted using laser scanning. Through this laser scanning technique, efficient change detection of coast section can be ensured and also they can provide important information to be used when detecting a coast section in the future.

The purpose of this research is to present about a series of processes for 3D model generation from scan data of two types of Korean styled architectures, namely, a pavilion and a house, which were acquired with the terrestrial LiDAR and evaluate a 3D surveying method to document digitally the traditional buildings, cultural properties, archeological sites, etc. Since most ancient buildings and cultural assets which require digital documentation by the terrestrial laser scanner usually need to acquire data from multi-directions. Therefore this paper suggested a process of acquiring and integrating data from mult-stations around the object. Also we presented a way for reconstructing automatically at once both the interior and exterior surfaces of buildings from laser scan data.

Automatic building material recognition has been a popular research interest over the past decade because it is useful for construction management and facility management. Currently, the extensively used methods for automatic material recognition are mainly based on 2D images. A terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) with a built-in camera can generate a set of coloured laser scan data that contains not only the visual features of building materials but also other attributes such as material reflectance and surface roughness. With more characteristics provided, laser scan data have the potential to improve the accuracy of building material recognition. Therefore, this research aims to develop a TLS-based building material recognition method by combining machine learning techniques. The developed method uses material reflectance, HSV colour values, and surface roughness as the features for material recognition. A database containing the laser scan data of common building materials was created and used for model training and validation with machine learning techniques. Different machine learning algorithms were compared, and the best algorithm showed an average recognition accuracy of 96.5%, which demonstrated the feasibility of the developed method.
The present research aims to develop a methodology to rapidly assess bridges with damage to the superstructure, caused by overheight trucks or lower-than-average overhead clearance. Terrestrial laser scanning and image processing techniques are combined with the finite element method to arrive at an analytical model which is more accurate, with respect to the complex geometrical aspects of the bridge in its damaged configuration. ""Virtual load testing"" may subsequently be carried out on this analytical model to determine the reserve capacity of the structure in an objective manner.
