  • This study is to look at the effect for deformation of Polyethylene, on the wave forms produced by tensile test. Signals collected were then classified visually into three types according to their shapes in the time and frequency domain. Each type should contain signals which could be correlated to a certain micro failure mechanism that occurs during the tensile process. The result showed that the acoustic emission method could be effectively used for analysis of fracture mechanism in Polyethylene structures.

  • High strength steels have been continually being developed to improve in fuel economy in automotive and ensure safety of passengers. New bonding and welding methods have been required for improving weldability on high strength steels. In this study, resistance spot welding and Weld-bond with nugget diameters of 4.0mm, 5.0mm, 6.0mm and 7.0mm were produced and tested, respectively. In order to confirm the effect of nugget diameters on tensile shear characteristic of the Weld-bond, tensile shear characteristics of Weld-bond were compared with those of resistance spot welding and adhesive bonding. Peak load of Weld-bond were increased as the nugget diameter increases. After appearing maximum peak load continuous fracture followed with second peak owing to load being carried by resistance spot weldment. Fracture modes of the adhesive layer in Weld-bond fractures were represented by mixed fracture mode, which are cohesive failure on adhesive part and button failure at resistance spot welds. The results showed that the tensile shear properties can be improved by applying Weld-bond on TRIP steel, and more apparent with nugget diameter higher than 5${\surd}$t.

  • When subjected to severe shear deformation by ECAP, microstructure of Al2024 becomes nanocrystalline grained texture material. To measure the strength of that, small punch (SP) testing method was adopted as a substitute for the conventional uniaxial tensile testing because the size of material processed by ECAP were limited to $\varphi12mm$ in transverse direction. SP tests were performed with specimens in longitudinal and transverse directions of Al 2024 ECAP metal. For comparing the strength values with those assessed by SP tests, uniaxial tensile tests were also conducted with specimens in longitudinal direction. Failure surfaces of the tested SP specimens showed that failure mode was shear deformation and Al 2024 ECAP metal has an anisotropy in strength. Thus, conventional equations proposed for assessing the strength characteristics were improper to assess those of Al2024 ECAP metal. In this paper a way of assessing the strength of Al 2024 ECAP metal was proposed and was proven to be effective.

  • Creep characteristic is an important failure mechanism when evaluating engineering materials that are soft material as polymers or used as mechanical elements at high temperatures. One of the popular thermo-plastic polymers, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) which is used broadly for machine elements material, as it has excellent mechanical properties such as impact resistance, toughness and stiffness compared to other polymers, was studied for creep characteristic at different levels of stress and temperatures. From the experimental results, the creep limit of ABS at room temperature is 80 % of tensile strength which is higher than PE and lower than PC or PMMA. Also the creep limits decreased to linearly as the temperatures increased, up to $80^{\circ}C$ which is the softening temperature of Butadiene ($82^{\circ}C$). Also the secondary stage of creep among the three creep stages for different levels of stress and temperature was non-existent which occurred for many metals by strain hardening effect.

  • In this study, the failure probability of the degraded LP turbine blade steel was performed using the Monte Carlo simulation to apply variation of applied stress and strength. For this purpose, applied stress under the service condition of steady state was obtained by theoretical stress analysis and the maximum Von-Mises stress was 219MPa. The fatigue strength under rotating-bending load was evaluated by the staircase method. Furthermore, 3-parameter Weibull distribution was found to be most appropriate among assumed distributions when the probabilistic distributions of tensile and fatigue strength were determined by the proposed analysis. The failure probability with various loading conditions was derived from the strength-stress interference model and the characteristic factor of safety was also estimated.

  • Recycled polypropylene (RPP) - Wood Saw Dust (WSD) composites with and without acetylation of filler were produced at different filler loading (15%, 25%, 35% and 45% w/w) and filler size (300, 212 and $100{\mu}m$). The RPP-WSD was compounded using a Haake Rheodrive 500 twin screw compounder at $190^{\circ}C$ at 8 MPa for 30 minutes. The mechanical properties and water absorption properties of modified and unmodified WSD-PP composites were investigated. Acetylation of WSD improved the mechanical and water absorption characteristic of composites. The decrease of filler size (300 to $100{\mu}m$) of the unmodified and acetylated WSD showed increase of tensile strength and impact properties. The composites exhibited higher tensile modulus properties as the filler loading increased (15% to 45%). However tensile strength, elongation at break and impact strength showed the opposite phenomenon. Water absorption increased as the mesh number and filler loading increased. With acetylation, lower moisture absorption was observed as compared to unmodified WSD. The failure mechanism from impact fracture of the filler-matrix interface with and without acetylation was analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).

  • It is well known that fatigue failures occur on welded structures in industrial application due to repetitive load force. In order to decrease the incidence of fatigue failure, we analyzed the mechanical properties based on structural aspects in rolled steel(SS 400) welded onto stainless steel (STS 304) by the MIG welding method as well as the structure of rolled steel welded onto itself. We compared the hardness, tensile and fatigue properties with two types of samples which had no defects on the welding parts as observed by X-ray topographic analysis. It was found that the tensile and fatigue strength levels of SS 400 welded onto STS 304 by the MIG welding method were higher than those of STS 304 welded onto itself.

  • The characteristic of silicone rubber can be seen from its resistance to both low and high temperature, whereas HNBR is resistant only in high temperature moderatly although it can be compounded to give good tensile properties, good oil resistance while silicone rubber severely lacks in these qualities. This study was initiated a balance of properties by blending HNBR and silicone rubber which is not considered for commercial blending; blends of HNBR with silicone rubber tend to show immiscible due to dissimilar nature of silicone and HNBR, the possibility of phase separation cannot be ruled out, in unfilled system after vulcanisation leading to premature failure. Attempt has been made to improve compatibility and minimise the layer seperation by the use of compatibilizer. Both filled and unfilled systems, in presence and absence of compatibilizer have been studied. Improvement in tensile properties of the blends or are observed as compared to the non-blended rubber. Different ratios of HNBR and silicone rubber are represented in this study. Blends of HNBR with silicone rubber were immiscible system. The tensile strength increased with filler loading.

  • The weldability of resistance spot welding of TRIP1180 steels for automobile components investigated enhance in order to achieve understanding of weld fracture during tensile-shear strength (TSS) test. The main failure modes for spot welds of TRIP1180 steels were nugget pullout and interfacial fracture. The peak load to cause a weld interfacial failure was found to be related to fracture toughness of the weld and the weld diameter. Although interfacial fracture occurred in the spot welded samples, the load-carrying capacity of the weld was high and not significantly affected by the fracture mode. Substantial part of the weld exhibits the characteristic dimple (or elongated dimple) fractures on interfacial fractured surface also, dimple fracture areas were drawmatically increased with heat input which is propotional to the applied weld current. In spite of the high hardness values associated with the martensite microstructures due to high cooling rate. The high load-carrying ability of the weld is directly associated with the area of ductile fracture occurred in weld. Therefore, the judgment of the quality of resistance spot welds in TRIP1180 steels, the load-carrying capacity of the weld should be considered as an important factor than fracture mode.
