Descriptive Study of Occupational Accidents and their Causes among Electricity Distribution Company Workers at an Eight-year Period in Iran

  • Background: Occupational accidents are unplanned events that cause damage. The socio-economic impacts and human costs of accidents are tremendous around the world. Many fatalities happen every year in workplaces such as electricity distribution companies. Some electrical injuries are electrocution, electric shock, and burns. This study was conducted in an electricity distribution company (with rotational 12-hour shift work) in Iran during an 8-year period to survey descriptive factors of injuries. Methods: Variables collected included accident time, age of injured worker, employment type, work experience, injury cause, educational background, and other information about accidents. Results: Results indicated that most of the accidents occurred in summer, and 51.3% were during shift work. Worker negligence (malpractice) was the cause of 75% of deaths. Type of employment had a significant relationship with type of injuries (p < 0.05). Most injuries were electrical burns. Conclusion: High rate of accidents in summer may be due to the warm weather or insufficient professional skills in seasonal workers. Shift workers are at risk of sleep complaints leading to a high rate of work injuries. Acquiring knowledge about safety was related to job experiences. Temporary workers have no chance to work all year like permanent workers, therefore impressive experiences may be less in them. Because the lack of protective equipment and negligence are main causes of accidents, periodical inspections in workshops are necessary.

Appropriate Rate for Estimating Safety Management Cost in Civil Work (토목공사 안전관리비 적정요율 산정)

  • Standard safety management cost system was established in 1988 as a decree Number of 88-13, first time. And then, it has been revised fourteen times, up to now. A lot of practical investigations have been made for the revision but many problems at sites are continued to be put out so that it should be revised. This study is to find out hazard level of each work kinds through questionnaire and interview and investigate analyze the status which standard safety management costs have been used. Also, this study is to show reasonable rates of standard safety management costs in construction industry and to set up countermeasures against those problem after reviewing its status in korea with in Japan and Europe. Budget and actually performed amount of safety management costs in this study are investigated. costs for temporary work which is clarified in Japan is collected in order to compare domestic cost rate with Japanese one related to the total project amount. This study is to investigate eleven project kinds of domestic system, first, and to investigate eleven items of apartment bldg, office, civil work such as bridge, tunnel, dam, plant etc, secondly. Additionally, three items of gymnasium, railway, particular steel tower are investigated in this study. Also this study is to investigate and analyze performed costs of presently processing worker finished work so that it shows a new reasonable rate against standard safety management costs in construction industry, in order to make basical data and material to be systemized.

  • The number of demolition work is rapidly increasing because the middle- and high-rised buildings constructed over the rapid industrialization and urbanization have been deteriorated in social and structural aspects. However, theoretical approaches or studies related to the demolition cost prediction are still insufficient. Thus, this study derived and analyzed important factors affecting the fluctuation of the building demolition costs. 14 factors was derived through literature reviews and experts' interview, and the importance of each factor was analyzed to the each work(temporary work, structure demolition, and waste disposal) and the entire demolition work by using descriptive analysis. The survey results showed that the demolition costs was greatly influenced by environmental properties of the site. The results of this study can be used as a basis for estimating the approximate cost of the demolition work.

The Impact of TANF on Income and Poverty : analyses by sub-component (미국 TANF정책이 소득 및 빈곤에 미친 영향: 하부조항별 분석)

  • The National Basic Livelihood Security(NBLS) System implemented from October 2000 has expanded cash assistance to cover the poor who are able to work in our country. Although the cash assistance for them has positive aspects of providing basic livelihood security for all people, but many scholars have also pointed out its negative aspects such as a decrease in labor supply among the poor. In order to provide policy implications for the cash assistance program of our country as well as the US, this paper examines the impact of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families(TANF) on poverty among single mothers and their families using data from March Current Population Survey of $1991{\sim}2002$. TANF imposes strong work requirements and time limits to recipients as conditions for cash assistance, which are major sub-components of TANF. Therefore, this paper analyzes TANF by looking at work requirements and time limits separately, not by looking at TANF as a single policy. The research findings show that work requirements significantly decreased income and increased poverty among single mothers. Although time limits show income increasing effects and poverty decreasing effects, it seems further studies on time limits are needed at this point. The research findings of this paper provide important lessons for welfare to work cash assistance of our country as well as the US.

Temporary Threshold Shift of Vibration Sensation by Dental Handpiece (치과용 핸드피스에 의한 일시적 진동감각역치 변화)

  • This study was performed to investigate the possibility of temporary threshold shift (TTS) of vibration sense could induced by exposure to high-frequency vibration or by work position taking by dentists in drilling or polishing. The vibratory perception thresholds (VPT) of 28 healthy men were measured on the index fingertip pulp of dominant hand at 250 Hz. The vibrating tool used in test was a low-speed handpiece of 34,000 rpm. For the TTS test, the dominant hand was exposed to high-frequency vibration and to work position for five minutes, respectively. The VPTs before and after vibratory exposure were $23.5{\pm}3.5dB,\;30.8{\pm}4.2dB$, respectively and VPT after work position was $23.7{\pm}4.6dB$. The difference between before and after vibartory exposure was statistically significant (p<0.001). The correlation of height, weight and BMI with baseline VPTs was not statistically significant. Also, there was no difference of VPTs by smoking. These results suggest that high-frequency vibration from dental handpieces might cause the impairment of vibration sensation.

Does Non-standard Work Affect Health? (비정규직 근로가 건강에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : Job insecurity, such as non-standard work, is reported to have an adverse impact on health, regardless of health behaviors. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between non-standard employment and health in Korea. Methods : We analyzed a representative weighted sample, which consisted of 2,112 men and 1,237 women, aged 15-64, from the 1998 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Non-standard employment included part-time permanent, short time temporary and daily workers. Self-reported health was used as a health indicator. Results : This study indicated that women were more likely to report poorer health than men with standard jobs. Of all employees, 20.3% were female manual workers. After adjusting for potential confounders, such as age, education, equivalent income, marital, social and self-reported economic status and health behavior factors, nonstandard employment was found to be significantly associated with poor health among female manual workers (OR, 1.86; 95% CI, 1.24 to 2.79). No significant association was found in other working groups Conclusions : Among female manual workers, nonstandard employees reported significantly poorer health compared with standard workers. This result raises concern as there are increasing numbers of non-standard workers, particularly females.

Research on the Employment Instability and Its Causes (고용불안과 그 원인에 관한 연구)

  • This study analyzed employment instability, defining the increase of employment instability as 'a greater possibility of losing a job and a declining possibility of re-employment'. Flow variable measurements showed that the extent of employment instability was higher post 2000 compared to the period of before financial crisis. When considering the status of workers, such an increase in employment instability can be characterized by a greater possibility of unemployment for daily workers. If this is examined in conjunction with job creation and destruction, employment instability is increased not because there are less jobs being created but because there is an actual decline in the number of jobs and also because the jobs that are being created are mostly temporary. On the other hand the increased instability is due to the large-scaled public work policy under the financial crisis.

The Effect of Work Status during Middle Life on the Retirement Process Later in Life Course (중장년기 종사상 지위와 은퇴 과정의 다양성)

  • This study investigates a long-tenn effect of labor career during middle life on the retirement process and income status later in life course. Two waves of KLIPS (Korean Labor Longitudinal Panel Survey) data sets collected in 1998 and 1999, are employed, which include detailed information on economic activities among those aged 15 and over. Results show that temporary, contracted workers during middle life not only have higher risk of job loss and poverty than those in permanent work status but also they are more likely to experience a stressful retirement process later in life course.

Occupational Therapists' Professional Quality of Life

  • Occupational therapists (OTs) interface patients much longer than other healthcare workers and, thus, are likely to experience a high level of stress because of work, physical fatigue, lack of professional knowledge and skills, and problematic relationships with patients, etc. This study examined the quality of the lives of OTs and the workplace which is an influential factor. This study recruited 200 OTs and used a professional quality of life scale. We found that, only 27.0% experience high levels of compassion satisfaction (CS) and 80.5% and 74.5% experience high or average levels of burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS) of compassion fatigue (CF), respectively. We discovered that CS was higher in temporary employees; and CF was higher in females, subjects in their 30s; and those working at general hospitals. Also, BO was higher in those with one to five years of clinical experience and regular employees. Last, STS was higher in the group without stable income. This study verified that clinical experience is a critical factor that reduces BO, and excessive workload outside of treatment lowers the professional quality of life. This suggests that work environment and regulations related to OTs must be improved to increase CS and reduce CF.

  • Philp Lim, Alexander Wang and Jason Wu are the American fashion designers as descendants of Chinese immigrants. They had the honor of being given the Swarovski Awards- new premier fashion designer- from CFDA(Council of Fashion Designers of America). The purpose of this study were to investigate the characteristics of their collection, and offered the informations for Korean designers entering the American market. This research categorized characteristics of these designers'- whole characteristics and the characteristics of details such as formal characteristics, optimistic characteristics, tactile characteristics-, and fashion styles from the S/S season of 2009 to the F/W season of 2010 were analyzed. These young and male designers being received attention as a star, didn't make creative art pieces. But they made pragmatic, commercial, and con-temporary works in whole characteristics and succeeded in their fashion business like other American designers. On the other hand they oriented high fashion clearly in terms of the detail characteristics - their own accent color, tiny change in variety, unique material, delicate ornaments. Therefore Lim created chic and stylish, Wang made a sporty street style, Wu made a luxury style with mannish and casual through work characteristics suitable for their costumer.
