  • The velocity and temperature profiles in the cabin of the automobile affect greatly the comfortableness of passengers. In this paper, the three dimensional flow and temperature analysis in the cabin of real automobile have been peformed. The three dimensional Navier-Stokes equation solver was validated by comparing with the other numerical data of a 1/5 scale model. The temperature field of cavity was also analyzed for the validation of energy equation solver. After the code validation, the numerical analysis of real field of flow and temperature of an automobile was peformed and the present result provides the insight of flow and temperature field of the inside of cabin.

  • In this study, the effects of temperature on loading of long-span strut were studied by using field monitoring and numerical analysis. For the field monitoring, several sensors, such as stain gages, temperature gages and load cells, were installed on the struts. From the monitoring results, the relation between temperature and axial force of the struts was analysed. By numerical analysis, the changes of axial force of strut and lateral displacement of wall due to temperature change were described with the strut length and ground conditions.

  • Thermal deformation of a machine tool structure can be evaluated from the analysis of the whole temperature field. However, it is extremely inefficient and impossible to know the whole temperature field by measuring temperatures at every point. So, the temperature estimator is required, which can predict the whole temperature field from the temperatures of just a few points. In this paper, a 1-dimensional heat transfer problem is modeled with modal analysis and state space equations. And then the state observer is designed to estimate the intensity of heat source and the whole temperature field in real time. The reliability of the estimator is verified by making comparison between solutions obtained from the proposed method and the exact solutions of examples. The proposed method is applied to the estimation of temperature distribution in a ball screw system.

  • This paper deals with coupled electromagnetic-thermal field analysis for thermal fluid analysis of oil immersed power transformer. Electric power losses are calculated from electromagnetic field analysis and are used as input source of thermal field analysis based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD). Particularly, In order to accurately predict the temperature rise in oil immersed power transformer, the thermal problem should be coupled with the electromagnetic problem. Moreover, to reduce analysis region, the heat transfer coefficient is applied to boundary surface of the power transformer model. The coupling method results are compared with the experimental values for verifying the validity of the analysis. The predicted temperature rises show good agreements with the experimental values.

  • This paper shows the temperature rise of the high voltage GIS bus bar. The temperature rise in GIS bus bar is due to Joule‘s losses in the conductor and the induced eddy current in the tank. The power losses of a bus bar calculated from the magnetic field analysis are used as the input data for the thermal analysis to predict the temperature. The required analysis is a couple-field Multiphysics that accounts for the interactions between three-dimensional AC harmonic magnetic and fluid fields. The heat transfer calculation using the fluid analysis is done by considering the natural convection and the radiation from the tank to the atmosphere. Consequently, because temperature distributions by couple-field Multiphysics (coupled magnetic-fluid) have good agreement with results of temperature rise test, the proposed couple-field Multiphysics technique is likely to be used in a conduction design of the single-pole and three pole-encapsulated bus bar in GIS..

  • A numerical study has been conducted on the development of the velocity and temperature fields in a laminar flow through an eccentric annular duct. A bipolar coordinates system is adopted, and a numerical program is developed to analyze 3-dimensional parabolic flow problems. In the analysis of the velocity field, the entrance length has been defined as the distance where the axial pressure gradient is greater than that of the developed velocity field by 5%. The dimensionless hydrodynamic entry length increases with increasing eccentricity. In the transverse flow fields, the reverse flow region along the wall due to the developing axial velocity near the entrance of the duct is found. In the analysis of the temperature field, the thermal entry length has been defined as the axial distance where the mean fluid temperature is 5% less than that of the developed temperature field. The dimensionless thermal entry length increases as eccentricity or Prandtl number increases. The overshoot of the mean Nusselt number over the developed value at the zero-temperature wall is encountered, and the rate of the overshoot increases with the increase of the eccentricity and Prandtl number.

  • Superconducting field coils using a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wires with high current density generate high magnetic field of 2 to 5 [T] and electromagnetic force (Lorentz force) acting on the superconducting field coils also become a very strong from the point of view of a mechanical characteristics. Because mechanical stress caused by these powerful electromagnetic force is one of the factors which worsens the critical current performance and structural characteristics of HTS wire, the mechanical stress analysis should be performed when designing the superconducting field coils. In this paper, as part of structural design of superconducting field coils for 17 MW class superconducting ship propulsion motor, mechanical stress acting on the superconducting field coils was analyzed and structural safety was also determined by the coupling analysis system that is consists of commercial electromagnetic field analysis program and structural analysis program.

  • This study attempts to address the buckling and free vibration characteristics of an isotropic cylindrical panel subjected to non-uniform temperature rise using numerical approach. Finite element analysis has been used in the present study. The approach involves three parts, in the first part non-uniform temperature field is obtained using heat transfer analysis, in the second part, the stress field is computed under the thermal load using static condition and, the last part, the buckling and pre-stressed modal analysis are carried out to compute critical buckling temperature as well as natural frequencies and associated mode shapes. In the present study, the effect of non-uniform temperature field, heat sink temperatures and in-plane boundary constraints are considered. The relation between buckling temperature under uniform and non-uniform temperature fields has been established. Results revealed that decrease (Case (ii)) type temperature variation field influences the fundamental buckling mode shape significantly. Further, it is observed that natural frequencies under free vibration state, decreases as temperature increases. However, the reduction is significantly higher for the lowest natural frequency. It is also found that, with an increase in temperature, nodal and anti-nodal positions of free vibration mode shapes is shifting towards the location where the intensity of the heat source is high and structural stiffness is low.
