  • In this work, we performed the methanation with steam and synthesis gas of a low $H_2/CO$ ratio to develop a process for producing SNG (synthetic natural gas). In this experiment conditions, the water gas shift reaction and the methanation reaction take place at the same time, and insufficient supply of steam might cause the deactivation of the catalyst. Therefore, the reaction characteristics with the amount of steam was performed, and the methanation on syngas containing $CO_2$ of the high concentration were studied. As a result, the temperature in the catalyst bed decreased by the supply of steam, and the methanation and the water gas shift reaction occurred at the same time. Although methane yield slightly decreased at the methanation using syngas containing $CO_2$ of the high concentration, the long-term operation (1,000 h) in the experimental conditions of this study indicates that this condition is suitable for the new commercial scale SNG process.

  • The growing concerns on environmental protection have been constantly demanding cleaner and more energy efficient vehicles without compromising any conveniences provided by the conventional vehicles. The recent significant advances in proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) fuel cell technology have shown the possibility of developing such vehicles powered by fuel cells. Several prototype fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) have been already developed by several major automotive manufactures, and all of the favorable features have been demonstrated in the public roads. FCEV is essentially a zero emission vehicle and allows to overcome the range limitation of the current battery electric vehicles. Being motivated by the laboratory and field demonstrations of the fuel cell technologies, variety of fuel cell alliances between fuel cell developers, automotive manufactures, petroleum companies and government agencies have been formed to expedite the realization of commercially viable FCEV. However, there still remain major issues that need to be overcome before it can be fully accepted by consumers. This paper describes the current fuel cell vehicle development status and the staggering challenges for the successful introduction of consumer acceptable FCEVS.

  • Meiotic homologous recombination generates new combinations of preexisting genetic variation and is a crucial process in plant breeding. Within the last decade, our understanding of plant meiotic recombination and genome diversity has advanced considerably. Innovation in DNA sequencing technology has led to the exploration of high-resolution genetic and epigenetic information in plant genomes, which has helped to accelerate plant breeding practices via high-throughput genotyping, and linkage and association mapping. In addition, great advances toward understanding the genetic and epigenetic control mechanisms of meiotic recombination have enabled the expansion of breeding programs and the unlocking of genetic diversity that can be used for crop improvement. This review highlights the recent literature on plant meiotic recombination and discusses the translation of this knowledge to the manipulation of meiotic recombination frequency and location with regards to crop plant breeding.

  • Bacterial cellulose (BC), which is produced by some bacteria, has unique structural, functional, physical and chemical properties. Thus, the mass production of BC for industrial application has recently attracted considerable attention. To enhance BC production, two aspects have been considered, namely, the engineering and genetic viewpoints. The former includes the reactor design, nutrient selection, process control and optimization; and the latter the cloning of the BC synthesis gene, and the genetic modification of the speculated genes for higher BC production. In this review, recent advances in BC production from the two viewpoints mentioned above are described, mainly using the bacterium Gluconacetobacter xylinus.

  • Canola meal is derived from the crushing of canola seed for oil extraction. Although it has been used in swine diets for a long time, its inclusion levels have been limited due to concerns regarding its nutritive value primarily arising from results of early studies showing negative effects of dietary canola meal inclusion in swine diets. Such effects were attributable to the presence of anti-nutritional factors (ANF; notably glucosinolates) in canola meal. However, due to advances in genetic improvements of canola that have led to production of cultivars with significantly lower ANF content and improved processing procedures, canola meal with a superior nutritive value for non-ruminant animals is now available. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to review the recent studies in the use of canola meal as feedstuff for swine, the factors influencing its use and the strategies to overcome them. First a historical overview of the development of canola is provided.

  • Three recent developments made at Rensselaer in sheet material forming processes are briefly reviewed in this paper. These advances represent three broad disciplines of Process Simulation, Forming Processes, and Computer-Aided Measurement Methods. The first development deals with simple and quick computer simulation of 2D sheet forming process without depending on popular finite element analysis methods. An analytical method based on a thin shell theory accounts for bending and unbending effects, and is capable of simulating practical sheet metal forming processes under the plane strain condition. The second area is concerned with innovative methods to improve formability of sheet materials by temperature gradient forming. The drawing limit is increased by such an improved temperature gradient forming process. The third and final area deals with a totally new experimental technique to capture 3D geometry data and measure strain distributions of sheet metal parts using a digital 35mm SLR camera.

  • TNAZ is a high explosive material because it is a highly strained ring compound containing one nitramine and gem dinditro groups. 1-t-butyl-3-nitroazetidine which was used as an intermediate previously, which declined the overall yield in synthesizing TNAZ. We obtained 1-t-butyl-3-hydroxymethyl-3-nitroazetidine in 64% yield from advances process which was used in synthesis of 1-t-butyl-3-nitroazetidine. The reaction pathway, shortening of reaction time, together with improvement of yield were studied too. We have obtained TNAZ in 85% yield.

  • With advances in olfactory sensor technologies, the number of reports on various intelligent applications using multiple sensors (sensor arrays) are continuously increasing for fields such as medicine, environment, security, etc. For intelligent and point-of-care applications, it is not only important for the sensor technology to perform chemical or physical measurements rapidly and accurately, but it is also important for artificial intelligence technology to recognize and quantify specific chemicals or diagnose diseases such as lung cancer and diabetes. In particular, great advances in pattern recognition technologies, including deep learning algorithms, as well as sensor array technologies, are expected to enhance the potential of various types of olfactory intelligence applications, including early cancer diagnosis, drug seeking, military operations, and air pollution monitoring.
