  • This paper describes interactive dynamic simulation schemes for articulated bodies in virtual environments, where user interaction is allowed through a haptic interface. We incorporated these schemes into our dynamic simulator I-GMS, which was developed in an object-oriented framework for simulating motions of free bodies and complex linkages, such as those needed for robotic systems or human body simulation. User interaction is achieved by performing push and pull operations with the PHANToM haptic device, which runs as an integrated part of I-GMS. We use both forward and inverse dynamics of articulated bodies for the haptic interaction by the push and pull operations, respectively. We demonstrate the user-interaction capability of I-GMS through on-line editing of trajectories for 6-dof (degrees of freedom) articulated bodies.

  • Football match predictions are of great interest to fans and sports press. In the last few years it has been the focus of several studies. In this paper, we propose the Poisson regression model in order to football match outcomes. We applied the proposed methodology to two national competitions: the 2012-2013 English Premier League and the 2015 Brazilian Football League. The number of goals scored by each team in a match is assumed to follow Poisson distribution, whose average reflects the strength of the attack, defense and the home team advantage. Inferences about all unknown quantities involved are made using a Bayesian approach. We calculate the probabilities of win, draw and loss for each match using a simulation procedure. Besides, also using simulation, the probability of a team qualifying for continental tournaments, being crowned champion or relegated to the second division is obtained.

  • The levitation stability of a Maglev vehicle utilizing electromagnetic suspension is primarily influenced by the deformation, roughness, and vibration of the guideway. Optimum design for both the vehicle and the guideway is desirable in order to reduce guideway construction cost, while meeting requirements for stability and ride quality. This paper presents an analysis of the levitation stability of the UTM-01, an urban Maglev vehicle, using a numerical simulation. The ODYN/Maglev, a dynamics analysis program, is used to simulate dynamics to evaluate the stability. A running test of the UTM-01 is also carried out to verify the results of the simulation. Using the simulation results, the levitation stability of the UTM-01 can be numerically analyzed at a variety of vehicle speeds.

  • In this study, the influence of the magnetic field on ferrite slurry's injection time during the slurry forming process was investigated. The evaluation system of the slurry's injection time under the strong magnetic field was designed with FEM and manufactured. Studied parameters were the applied magnetic field, the input pressure of the slurry, and the supplying tube materials. As the results, the injection time was increased with the external magnetic field strength and rapidly decreased with increasing the input pressure of the slurry. Also the injection time was decreased when the supplying tube was manufactured with the magnetic material having the higher magnetic permeability than the ferrite.

  • Accurate aerodynamic data is required for the flight simulation or control logic design of aircraft. The aerodynamic look-up table has been used widely to provide aerodynamic forces and moments for given flight conditions. In this paper, we replace the aerodynamic look-up table with real-time aerodynamic model which calculates aerodynamic forces and moments of quasi-steady flow directly for given flight conditions and control surface deflections. Flight simulations are conducted for the low-speed small UAV using real-time aerodynamic model, and responses of the UAV are predicted successfully for inputs of control surfaces.

  • In high-speed multimedia satellite communication systems, it is essential to provide high-quality, economical services by using efficient transmission schemes which can overcome channel impairments appearing in the satellite link. This paper introduces techniques to compensate for rain attenuation and the Doppler shift in the satellite communication link. An adaptive transmission technique with a control algorithm to adaptively allocate transmission schemes is used as a countermeasure to rain attenuation. We introduce a new rain attenuation modeling technique for estimating system performance and propose a novel Doppler shift compensation algorithm with reduced hardware complexity. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can provide greatly enhanced performance compared to conventional algorithms. Simulation software and hardware which incorporate the proposed techniques are also demonstrated.

  • This study analyzed the offshore plant industry and related regulations such as ISO, IEC, and Norsok Standards to develop an integrated network management system (INMS) capable of both on-site and remote management and configuration of IP-based network equipment in offshore plants. The INMS was designed based on actual specifications and POS plans, and a plan of management was verified through an offshore plant engineering company. Various modules such as PAGA interface modules, CCTV, IP-PBX, and HF-radio communication modules were developed for system implementation. Protocol and data design and screen design were followed by framework development and introduction of the automatic satellite communication function.

  • Yttrium-90 is a useful therapeutic radioisotope for tumor treatment because of its high-energy-emitting beta rays. However, it has been difficult to select appropriate collimators and main energy windows for Y-90 Bremsstrahlung imaging using gamma cameras because of the broad energy spectra of Y-90. We used a Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the effects of collimator selection and energy windows on Y-90 Bremsstrahlung imaging. We considered both MELP and HE collimators. Various phantoms were employed in the simulation to determine the main energy window using primary-to-scatter ratios (PSRs). Imaging performance was evaluated using spatial resolution indices, imaging counts, scatter fractions, and contrast-to-noise ratios. Collimator choice slightly affected energy spectrum shapes and improved PSRs. The HE collimator performed better than the MELP collimator on all imaging performance indices (except for imaging count). We observed minor differences in SR and SF values for the HE collimator among the five simulated energy windows. The combination of an HE collimator and improved-PSR energy window produced the best CNR value. In conclusion, appropriate collimator selection is an important component of Bremsstrahlung Y-90 photon imaging and main energy window determination. We found HE collimators to be more appropriate for improving the imaging performance of Bremsstrahlung Y-90 photons.
