  • English inversion constructions are not only hard for non-native speakers to learn but also difficult to teach mainly because of their intriguing grammatical and discourse properties. This paper addresses grammatical issues in learning or teaching the so-called 'predicate inversion (PI)' construction (e.g., Equally important in terms of forest depletion is the continuous logging of the forests). In particular, we chart the grammatical (distributional, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic) properties of the PI construction, and argue for adata-driven teaching for English grammar. To depart from the arm-chaired style of grammar teaching (relying on author-made simple sentences), our teaching method introduces a datadriven teaching. With total 25 university students in a grammar-related class, students together have analyzed the British Component of the International Corpus of English (ICE-GB), containing about one million words distributed across a variety of textual categories. We have identified total 290 PI sentences (206 from spoken and 87 from written texts). The preposed syntactic categories of the PI involve five main types: AdvP, PP, VP(ed/ing), NP, AP, and so, all of which function as the complement of the copula. In terms of discourse, we have observed, supporting Birner and Ward's (1998) observation that these preposed phrases represent more familiar information than the postposed subject. The corpus examples gave us the three possible types: The preposed element is discourse-old whereas the postposed one is discourse-new as in Putting wire mesh over a few bricks is a good idea. Both preposed and postposed elements can also be discourse new as in But a fly in the ointment is inflation. These two elements can also be discourse old as in Racing with him on the near-side is Rinus. The dominant occurrence of the PI in the spoken texts also supports the view that the balance (or scene-setting) in information structure is the main trigger for the use of the PI construction. After being exposed to the real data and in-depth syntactic as well as informationstructure analysis of the PI construction, it is proved that the class students have had a farmore clear understanding of the construction in question and have realized that grammar does not mean to live on by itself but tightly interacts with other important grammatical components such as information structure. The study directs us toward both a datadriven and interactive grammar teaching.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze 181 papers about brain-based learning appeared in domestic scientific journals from 1989 to May of 2012 and suggest application conditions in elementary science education. The results of this study summarizes as follows; First, learning activity suggested by brain-based learning study is mainly explained by working of brain function. Learning activity explained by brain-based learning study are divided into 'learning according to specialized brain function, learning according to brain function integration and learning beyond specialization and integration of hemispheres'. Second, it searched how increased knowledge of brain structure and function affects learning. Analysis from this point of view suggests that brain-based learning study affects learning in many ways especially emotion, creativity and learning motivation. Third, brain-based learning study suggests various possibilities of learning activity reflecting brain plasticity. Plasticity which is one of most important characteristics of brain supports the validity of learning activity as learning disorder treatment and explains the possibility of selective increment of brain function by leaning activity and the need of whole-brain approach to learning activity. Fourth, brain-based learning brought paradigm shifts in education field. It supports learning sophistication on the understanding of student's learning activity, guides learning method that reflects the characteristics of subject and demands reconstruction of curriculum. Fifth, there are many conditions to apply brain-based learning in elementary science education field, learning environment that fits brain-based learning, change of perspectives on teaching and learning of science educators and development of brain-based learning curriculum are needed.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of peer tutoring on students' achievement and learning satisfaction in a liberal computer class at university level. Traditional teaching method was applied for the control group consisting 55 students for 8 weeks. The experimental group containing 44 students was instructed using both traditional teaching method and peer tutoring. According to the results of diagnosed test, the experimental group was divided into heterogeneous ability group of 3 or 4. The tutor training was provided a week in advance of the class and the students played a role of a tutor and tutee by taking turns. The results showed no significant differences between the two groups on academic achievement; however, in terms of students' learning satisfaction, it displayed a wider range of results. The learning satisfaction data from the experimental group showed a much higher level than that of the control group. It is predicted that the amount of class hours of a week, the quality of the lecture and the application of peer tutoring affect the students' academic achievement. It is suggested that subsequent research on peer tutoring will allow for more in-depth study in this field.

  • The purpose of this study is to help to improve the method of math teaching by analysing how learner-centered teaching method offsets mathematical creativity and mathematical disposition. For this purpose, research questions are established as follows; (1) Mathematical creativity between open-ended learning activity approach(OLAA) and general classroom-based instruction(GCI) shows any difference? (2) Mathematical disposition between OLAA and GCI shows any difference? The results obtained through this study were as follows: (1) There was significant difference between OLAA group and CCI group in mathematical creativity. This means that open-ended learning activity approach was generally more effective in improving mathematical creativity than general classroom-based instruction. (2) There was no significant difference between OLAA group and GCI group in mathematical disposition. But the average scores of mathematical disposition except mathematical confidence improved a little. So we can say that open-ended learning activity approach brought an positive influence on students' mathematical disposition. The results obtained in this study suggest that the OLAA can be used to cultivate the children's mathematical creativity and disposition. Therefore, I suggest that teachers should use the OLAA to improve the children's mathematical creativity and disposition.

  • The college liberal arts mathematics is opened as a required course in science and engineering field, but students with low achievement experience difficulty in learning. Therefore, flip learning, which is well known as an effective teaching method based on self-led and learner, is suggested as an alternative. However, some problems are pointed out in this pedagogy. As an alternative to flip learning, we apply flip PBL classes that apply PBL to flip learning to general math subjects to supplement the problems of existing flip learning classes and increase interest in mathematics I want to know the effectiveness of whether it can be done. In this study, we investigated the educational effectiveness of the comparison study between the experimental group applying flip PBL class and the control group applying the existing flip learning class. First, the experimental group showed higher than the control group by 22 points Second, in the reflection journal analysis, in contrast to the control group, there was a positive effect on the improvement of the interest of the mathematics in the experimental group, It is expected that it will be applied as a teaching method that can complement the learning.
