  • The purpose of this study was to develop of nutritional education activities and effect evaluation in related curriculums for all Dongbu Elementary School children in Jinhae by the teacher in charge. This educational purpose was to build a desirable dietary behavior for optimal growth and health in elementary school children. The educational program contents were developed according to 1) selection of content related curriculums 2) analysis of contents related on dietary habits by grade 3) preparation teaching plans to build desirable dietary habits 4) development of teaching manual by turns. Twelve hours of nutrition education at all school classes were done from March 2 to December 10 2004 in Dongbu Elementary School in Jinhae, Gyeongnam. The education effects were evaluated through the questionnaire surveys before and after the education and their comparative analysis. The results of this study were summarized as follows : Forty percent of the underweight group, $22.8\%$ of the normal group, $42.2\%$ of the obese group had the wrong perceptions on their body figures, but after nutrition education $80.5\%$ of the underweight group, $94.3\%$ of the normal group, $97.9\%$ of the obese group gleaned the correct perceptions on their body figures (p < 0.001). As the effects of the education, the subjects who exercise more than 3 times in a week increased in all groups (p < 0.01-0.001), notably in the obese group. Meal regularity (p < 0.001) , skipping meals (p < 0.001), eating rate and snack selection patterns (p < 0.01-p < 0.001) also improved by nutrition education. We could also observe the effects of the nutrition education through the affirmative statements which appeared in their dietary records. These results showed a possibility of nutrition education activities in related curriculums to improve in dietary habits of school children. Next year, we will start with the system of nutrition teachers in elementary school, but nutrition teacher cannot undertake the task of teaching and food service management alone. Because of that, we intend to develop this program as an alternative proposal for the nutrition education in elementary schools. (Korean J Community Nutrition 10(6) $795\∼804$, 2005)

  • Integrated science for high school is required in the present Korean National Sixth Curriculum and the Seventh Curriculum which will be effective in 2002. Currently, most science teachers in secondary school have concerns about teaching integrated science subjects and this continues to raise a significant problem for practical implementation of integrated science education in schools. In this paper, we discuss two reasons for these concerns that our analysis revealed: 1) Science teachers do not understand how to implement integrated science education and 2) there are insufficient teaching-learning materials supporting integrated science. Three different approaches to integration that have been suggested to overcome the problem of implementation are outlined here. They are the knowledge centered, social problem centered, and individual interest centered approaches. Reported here are the first two steps we undertook in preparation for testing the relative effectiveness of these approaches. First, we analyzed the content of the Korean Sixth and Seventh National Science Curricula, seven Korean integrated science text books, the American National Science Education Standards, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science Benchmarks looking for common themes. We identified in the analyzed materials the common themes: energy conservation, energy transformation, energy transport, energy degradation. We then used their energy related content to organize sets of concept structures, one set for each of the three approaches. These concept structures will provide the foundations for the development of integrated teaching-learning energy plans to be used in our research into the effectiveness of the approaches.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the clothing safety teaching/learning plan in Home Economics based on the health belief model and to examine the effects of the course using the developed teaching/learning plan on the health belief. Based on ADDIE model, 6 clothing safety teaching/learning plans were developed by applying the health belief model. They consisted of three learning factors of 'harmful substances that can be exposed during the production, wear, wash, and storage of clothes and textile products', 'environment friendly fibers' and 'natural detergents'. Then they were implemented on 7 classes in middle school located in Gyeonggi-do Province from August 20 to September 7 in 2018. The health beliefs data collected before and after the course were analyzed with paired t-test with SPSS/win. As a result, the perceived threat(combination of perceived severity and perceived susceptibility), the perceived benefit, and the self-efficacy were significantly improved. And the perceived barrier was significantly reduced. In conclusion, the home economics clothing safety education course using the health belief model was meaningful as the safety education to enable middle school students to practice safe clothing life from harmful substances. The results of this study are expected to be helpful for activating safety education in home economics.

  • Teachers and students tend to perceive mathematics irrelevant with character education. Since there has been no teaching of cross-curriculum characters education in mathematics classrooms, this research was to look for the possibility of teaching the character education in mathematics. Through the pilot study, trying to rebuild character factors based on Moon, et al,(2011), the researcher applied them to developing 8 lesson plans and carried them to 12th graders of the high school in March and April, 2014 using pre and post tests. Based on statistically significant difference with the level of p<.05, in "relation with me", for 'appointment' in the pretest, the students of natural science(SNS) exceeded, but in the posttest the students of humanities(SH) exceeded. In "relation with the other", in the posttest, for 'forgiveness' and 'responsibility' SNS, but for 'ownership' SH exceeded. In 'relation with a group' in the pretest for 'community spirit' SNS, and in the posttest SH exceeded. In the pretest in this study SNS naturally perceived the value of character education in math classes since they were closer to mathematics but after the experience through character education with cross-curriculum factors, SH perceived its importance expecially 'appointment', 'ownership', and 'community spirit' more than SNS so that we could predict the possibility of teaching cross-curriculum character factors in mathematics even after they had preconception as a high school student.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and apply a Convergence program for teaching of congruence and symmetry and to investigate the effects of the mathematical creativity and convergence talent. For these purposes, research questions were set up as follows: 1. How is a Convergence program for teaching of congruence and symmetry developed? 2. How does a Convergence program affect the mathematics creativity and convergence talent of fifth grade student in elementary school? The subjects in this study were 16 students in fifth-grade class in elementary school located in Songpa-gu, Seoul. A Convergence program was developed using the integrated unit design process chose the concept of congruence and symmetryas its topic. The developed program consisted of a total 12 class activities plan, lesson plans for 5 activities. Mathematics creativity test, a test on affective domain related with convergence talent measurement were carried out before and after the application of the developed program so as to analyze the its effects. In addition, students' satisfaction for the developed program was investigated by a questionnaire. The results of this study were as follows: First, A convergence program should be developed using the integrated unit design process to avoid focusing on the content of any one subject area. The program for teaching of congruence and symmetry should be considered students' learning style and their preferences for media. Second, the convergence program improved the students' mathematical creativity and convergence talent. Among the sub-factors of mathematical creativity, originality was especially improved by this program. Students thought that the program is good for their creativity. Plus, this program use two subject class, Math and Art, so student do not think about one subject but focus on topic 'congruence and symmetry'. It help students to develop their convergence talent.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between mentor teachers' mentoring characteristics and mentee teachers' reflective practices and to investigate mentor teachers' mentoring methods to enhance mentee teachers' reflective practices based on the analysis. The participants were four beginning science teachers and four mentors who have more than seven years of teaching experience. This study compiled mentor and mentee teachers' journals, records and transcripts from mentee teachers' five periods of classes, lesson plans, evaluation forms of lessons, one-on-one mentoring records and transcripts, questionnaires conducted before, during, and after the mentoring program, and a questionnaire about the effects of one-on-one mentoring. The mentoring characteristics of mentor teachers were analyzed based on mentor's interaction methods and the contents and frequency of the support based on teaching feedback. Mentee teachers' reflective thinking was analyzed by being categorized as voluntary self-reflections of their classes and reflections on the support provided by mentor teachers. Mentee teachers' reflective practices were analyzed by utilizing RTOP. The conclusions of this study are as follows: Mentor teachers could promote mentee teachers' reflective practices by eliciting conversation that helped mentees perceive problems in their teaching practices. Mentors' questions evoking mentees' reflective thinking could elicit mentees' spontaneous self-reflection, and it led to the enhancement of self-reflection on mentors' support and reflective practices. When mentors offered the support based on teaching practices while playing a role as a facilitator to help mentees identify and solve problems by themselves, mentees' reflective practices could be promoted.
