This study aimed to investigate how middle school teachers perceived major features of the 'Free Learning Semester'. In 2013, the Free Learning Semester has been proposed by Korean government to provide students with the educational programs which deals with various activities in classroom in order to increase student's learning ability. The Free Learning Semester helps students to figure out their dreams and develops their talents. The government plans to expand the Free Learning Semester to all middle schools by 2016. Since teacher's perception is an important matter in the application of the Free Learning Semester, this study seeks to document the changes in curriculum by observing the perception of teachers in the school that implemented the Free Learning Semesters and those that did not implemented the Free Learning Semesters. 172 teachers from nine middle schools in Busan that their school schedules allowed were surveyed. Two school which operated the Free Learning Semester were compared to seven schools which did not operate the Free Learning Semester. The results are summarized as follows: First, almost all (97.7%) teachers in the Free Learning Semester schools have completed a training whereas 74.6% of the teachers in the non-Free Learning Semester schools have not. The usefulness of the training was satisfactory, but the teachers in the Free Learning Semester Schools wanted more practical help with the curriculum. Second, the result, which was statistically significant(p<.05), revealed that the first grade second semester of middle school was the best time to implement the Free Learning Semester. In order for its successful establishment in schools, there needs to be a reliable and effective evaluation system. However, the results regarding the introduction and management of the new system were not statistically significant. Lastly, in the Free Learning Semester Schools, the changes in teachers' perception were statistically significant (p<.05). The results show that the teachers need the training and the teacher's community to implement the curriculum and set a basis for valuation.
This study analyzed the teacher's perception for influence of behavioral characteristics of scientifically-gifted students on general students in elementary school science class. To do this, we selected the eight elementary school teachers who were conducting the regular science classes including scientifically-gifted students belonging to the gifted education institutes in Seoul and conducted individual in-depth interviews. The analysis of the results reveal that the teachers mentioned seven behavioral characteristics of scientifically-gifted students in general elementary school science classes.: 'excellent in designing and performing experiments', 'playing a leading role in experiments', 'expressing their abundant prior knowledge frequently', 'attempting their tasks with curiosity and persistence', 'displaying scientific creativity', 'often asking scientific questions in detail', and 'expressing their opinions logically'. These behavioral characteristics of scientifically-gifted students had positive effects on general students, such as 'providing them with a successful experience in conducting experiments', 'improving understanding of science class contents', 'developing scientific thinking and reflective thinking', and 'improving their students' positive experiences about science'. However, the excessive learning-driven behaviors of scientifically-gifted students had negative effects on general students, such as 'limiting opportunities for general students to participate in classes', 'conducting passive exploration centered on results', and 'causing conflicts with general students'. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
Rapid development of educational technology requires fundamental changes not only in the form of instruction and role of teachers in school education but also in the competency development of students. Specifically, the emergence of new technologies such as makerspace, virtual reality (VR), and robotics has made it more challenging for teachers and students in the 21st century. However, even with the argument for the changes, less has been discussed about how much in-service teachers are aware of and how they are preparing for such changes. Therefore, this study intends to explore what would be required to students and teachers, and for instructional changes with more technologies available through the lens of elementary school teachers. The study results suggest, similar to previous studies, in-service elementary teachers recognize that student competencies such as creativity, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills are important. They also perceived that teacher change in role and attitude, and for instructional method and classroom culture are crucial as catalysts of change. Unique and interesting finding from this study is about the importance of nurturing digital citizenship in technology-infused learning environment. The digital citizenship has been less highlighted in the past, but this study revealed it should be treated as a priority.
This study was to examine home economics (HE) teachers' and the 1st-grade students' needs perception toward the purposes of HE education in middle school which has been practced since 1995 for both male and female students. This study, attempted (1) to analyze needs priority among the educational purposes of HE subject in relation to three systems of actions; (2) to compare differences between HE teachers' and students' perception concerning the degree of importance and achievement of the educational purposes of HE subject: and (3) to examine what they conceive as the problems In the current HE education. The survey was conducted with the samples of 600 1st-grade middle school students and 101 middle school HE teachers during the period of February-March 1996. The questionnaire used in this study was a modified version which had already been developed along with the 6th HE curriculum. For data analyses, SAS program was utilized to get Means and to perform both discrepancy test and t-test. The findings of this study were summarized as follows: first, with respect to each group's perception of the importance of the purposes related to three systems of action, HE teachers emphasized the importance of the purposes related to emancipatory action, while students placed more emphasis on the purposes related to technical action. Second, in terms of the degree of achievement, students had more positive perception on the degree of achievement of the purposes related to technical action than HE teachers did. Both groups marked low level of recognition on the degree of achievement of the purposes related to emancipatory action. Third, with respect to needs priority, HE teachers placed the first priority on emancipatory action, the second on technical action, and the last on communicative action: in the case of students, the first priority was on technical action, the second on communicative action, and the last on emancipatory action. In addition, the analysis of the opinions on the 6th curriculum revealed that most respondents found it necessary to secure adequate amount of classes for HE education. Also they shared the recongnition that HE curriculum should be renovated into the one which would fully appreciate the purposes of HE education from the perspective of the practical concerns of action which are distinct from the functional and technical concerns of passive learning. The findings of this study can serve as basic data for establishing the new purposes of HE education which put more emphasis on the purposes related to emancipatory action: as well as for developing an enhanced curriculum and reinforcing the identity of HE education.

The purpose of this study was to help elementary teachers to design systems for small group study to improve the efficiency of both teaching and learning in science education. This was done by examining how teachers form and manage a small group study, and by observing students' perceptions regarding small group study. For this study, an in-depth interview was conducted with 8 elementary teachers and 8 sixth grade elementary students chosen according to their levels of class participation and scientific achievement. The results showed that although elementary teachers preferred a group of 4 students, 6 students were randomly picked to form a group due to the physical aspects of the educational environment in most of the cases examined. It was also found that when the small group was composed of students with different personalities rather than according to their level of achievement, this better encouraged research activities and fostered scientific attitudes as compared to educating solely for the transference of scientific knowledge. On the elementary students' part, a change of perception on their new role and skills of interaction was also required. Elementary students preferred to compose small groups so that they resembled a group of close friends, and from their perspective, small group study was useful, interesting, time efficient, and helpful to each other in studying science.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception about STEAM education of primary teachers who have developed and applied STEAM education to their students through teacher training program. For this study, 101 among 172 attendance are responded to questionnaire of three categories consisting of development and application teaching material for STEAM instruction, and spreading STEAM education. The major findings are as follows: First, when primary teachers develop materials for STEAM education, they consider applicabilities in real classes. Second, they feel the burden of time when they develop STEAM material. Third, they think that their own program has significant educational effectiveness and that students enjoyed the program. Especially, they think that STEAM education program can raise students' interest about learning. Fourth, primary teachers point out the constraints for application of STEAM education program, which are lack of expertise and difficulty acquiring class time. Fifth, primary teachers evaluate the effect of STEAM education program on primary education is positive, and they answer that we need many teaching materials for STEAM education, operating as a regular curriculum, and securing budget. In order to spread STEAM education in field of primary education successfully, administrators have to consider and reflect the voice of teachers.
The purpose of this study is to investigate expertise of mathematic teachers in development of designing assessment items, derived from development of assessing tools, which is a part of assessing competence of mathematic teachers. Analysis was made upon the difference between Pre-service and In-service teachers in terms of self-perception on assessment items. The assessing references of self-perception on developing in designing assessment items consist of followings: one's Beliefs and Self-Rating in designing assessment items. This investigation on self-perception was carried out by both pre-service teachers who are currently enrolled students in college and in-service teachers who are currently incumbent in secondary schools. This analysis based on 310 teachers' answers on self-perception of designing assessment items, both in- and preservice.
Purpose: This study was done to identify levels of health teacher's perception and performance on abdominal pain management in elementary schools. Methods: The participants were 207 health teachers in elementary school in B metropolitan city. In a descriptive cross-sectional study, the structured self-report questionnaire was developed based on the literatures and school health care guidelines by the researchers. The data were analyzed using the PASW 18.0 program. Results: The mean scores (${\pm}SD$) on perception and performance of abdominal pain management were $4.02{\pm}0.43$ (range 1~5) and $3.47{\pm}0.41$ (range 1~5), respectively. Their perception and performance of abdominal pain management had a statistically significant correlation (r=.27, p<.001). In a regression analysis, the performance of abdominal pain management was significantly influenced by perception of abdominal pain management, career of health teachers, self-confidence in abdominal pain management, and total number of classes in a school. The regression model explained 19% of the variance of performance of abdominal pain management. Conclusion: These findings showed that the performance levels were lower than its perception levels of elementary school health teachers on abdominal pain management for students. It suggests that the standardized abdominal pain management guideline is developed to improve the performance of school health teachers.
