  • Acoustic target strength (TS) measurement and theoretical acoustic scattering models were applied to estimate the TS for assessing the fish biomass. TS measurement was made of ex situ sailfin sandfish Arctoscopus japonicus at 70 and 120 kHz, and then compared to backscatter model prediction. The live sandfish was tethered in seawater using monofilament lines. Measurements were made versus incidence angle, $-50^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$ relative to dorsal aspect directions. Distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) model was used to calculated TS pattern. The TS values of sandfish (body length: 16.2 cm) at 70 and 120 kHz were -66.94 dB and -64.45 dB, respectively, and were about 20 dB lower than TS of other fishes in Korea waters. These TS levels were distributed within the range of the theoretical TS. Ex situ measurement and theoretical TS may be applied to improve acoustical detection and biomass estimation of the sandfish, and is necessary to measure with various lengths.

  • Understanding the abundance and distribution of massive jellyfish is necessary to forecast where or when their blooms will happen. The acoustic technique is one of the most useful methods of obtaining information if the acoustic characteristics of the targets are known. This study was conducted to determine the acoustic target strength (TS, dB) of two jellyfish species, Aurelia aurita and Cyanea nozakii, in the southern coast of Korea. For the ex situ measurements, 120, 200, and 420 kHz split beam transducers were used, and jellyfish with various bell lengths were arranged to prepare multiple jellyfish. Under 2 vertical individuals, the mean TS for multiple A. aurita at 120, 200, and 420 kHz was -72.7, -71.7, and -68.2 dB, respectively. In the case of 5 vertical individuals, the mean TS of the species was -71.3, -68.2, and -62.0 dB. Finally, the mean TS of C. nozakii at 120, 200, and 200 kHz was -62.0, -60.3, and -58.2 dB under 2 individuals and -58.1, -57.4, and -54.0 dB under 4 individuals, respectively. For both species, higher numbers of jellyfish resulted in a higher TS. In addition, higher frequencies were associated with a higher TS for the same jellyfish. These TS results for two species can be used as essential data for the acoustic detection of jellyfish in an open ocean or coastal area.

  • The aim of this study is to find out the behavior and acoustic backscattering of the large jellyfish Nemopliema nomurai using hydroacoustics in situ. N. nomurai was distributed at depths ranging from 10~15 m during the day. Regarding the behavior of N. nomurai, there was no significant change in depth, and 3D tortuosity was not high. The vertical direction was ${\pm}10^{\circ}$ from the horizontal, and moving speed was $0.9{\sim}1.5\;m\;s^{-1}$. With regard to hydro-acoustical characteristics, the mean TS of N. nomurai ranged from -69.6~-56.0 dB at 38 kHz and -69.4~-54.5 dB at 120 kHz. TS variation (Max TS-Min TS) at 38 and 120 kHz was 0~10.2 dB and 0.2~16.0 dB, respectively. Mean TS and TS variation (Max TS-Min TS) of N. nomurai were higher at 120 kHz than at 38 kHz. The results showed that the use of hydroacoustics was effective in estimating the distribution depth, behavior, and acoustic characteristics of the target.

  • We explored the frequency response of krill target strength (TS) to understand the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and ice krill (Euphausia crystallorophias) using the stochastic distorted-wave Born approximation (SDWBA) model. The results showed that the distribution of orientation and the fatness factor could significantly impact on the frequency response of TS. Krill TS is clearly depended on acoustic properties, which could affect to estimate the biomass of two krill species. The results provide insight into the importance of understanding TS variation to estimate the Antarctic krill and ice krill biomass, and their ecology related to the environmental features in the Southern Ocean.

  • Black rockfish and goldeye rockfish are commercially important fish species due to the increasing demand in Korea. When estimating the abundance of stocks for these species acoustically, it is of crucial importance to know the target strength(TS) to length dependence. In relation to these needs, TS measurement was conducted on black rockfish and goldeye rockfish in an acrylic salt water tank using 70kHz and 120kHz split beam echo sounders. The TS for these two species under the controlled condition was simultaneously measured with the swimming movement by DVR system and analyzed as a function of fish length(L). The results obtained are summarized as follows: The best fit regression of TS on fish length of black rockfish was TS=19.38 Log(L, cm)-70.46 ($r^2=0.71$) at 70kHz and TS=22.39 Log(L, cm)-70.40 ($r^2=0.64$) at 120kHz and in the standard form TS=20 Log(L, cm)-71.29 ($r^2 = 0.70$) at 70kHz and TS=20 Log(L, cm)-66.88 ($r^2=0.57$) at 120kHz. The best fit regression of TS on fish length of goldeye rockfish was TS=17.10 Log(L, cm)-68.28 ($r^2=0.37$) at 70kHz and TS=24.39 Log(L, cm)-73.74 ($r^2=0.59$) at 120kHz and in the standard form TS=20 Log(L, cm)-72.03 ($r^2=0.32$) at 70kHz and TS=20 Log(L, cm)-67.68 ($r^2=0.64$) at 120kHz. An empirical model for fish TS(dB) averaged over the dorsal aspect of 115 fishes of black rockfish and goldeye rockfish and which spans the fish length(L, m) to wavelength($\lambda$, m) ratio between 8 and 30 was derived : TS=34.12 Log(L)-14.12 Log($\lambda$)-23.83, ($r^2=0.90$).

  • The indirect target strength (TS) estimation method which uses the Kirchhoff ray mode model (KRM model) was discussed to apply for a biomass estimation in the water of mixed species. TS of 25 live scorpion fishes for 120kHz were measured by a tethered method and of others dominant 5 species in the marine ranching ground of Jeju coastal water including a scorpion fish were also estimated by KRM model. The measurement TS of scorpion fish well agreed with the theoretical values and the standard formula of scorpion fish was estimated as $TS_{120kHz}=20Log\;(L)-72.9$ ($r^2=0.67$). TScm values estimated on trial to each sample of dominant 5 species were from -69.3dB to -75.1dB at 120kHz and they were in the general range of swimbladdered fish. It was clarified that TS by KRM model can be used to estimate fish biomass estimation by increasing a sample number and is more effective under the condition that there is rare TS information for inhabiting species in mixed-species area.

  • Target strength (TS) information is an important parameter that estimates the detection, distribution, and abundance of Aurelia aurita. In order to investigate the biological TS of jellyfish, some factors such as size (bell diameter), tilt angle, pulsation, and symbion should be known. In the ex situ TS measurements, the tilt angles and pulsation from synchronized swimming behavior of four live A. aurita (bell diameters in the air: 54.2 ~ 94.2 mm) were measured with the acoustic data at 70 kHz. The reduced target strength (RTS) of A. aurita was found to change ranged from 13.4 ~ 16.5 dB according to the incidence angles from $-30^{\circ}$ to $24^{\circ}$. When the change rate of bell diameter in the water was 0.2, the TS value showed a 7.2 dB change. These results could be utilized as an important data to understand the acoustic characteristic scattering of A. aurita.

  • The contrast (fish body to medium ratio) of density and sound speed were measured to estimate acoustic scattering from small juvenile cod (Gadus macrocephalus) with the Kirchhoff-Ray Mode backscatter model. The density contrast was measured by the density-bottle method and the sound speed contrast was estimated by the time of flight method. The results revealed that the measured density contrasts of juvenile cod varied between 1.003 and 1.029 (mean = 1.014, S.D. = 0.01). On the other hand, sound speed contrasts varied between 1.039 and 1.041 (mean = 1.041, S.D. = 0.001). The relationship between averaged target strength (TS) and total length (TL) established by the model were <$TS_{38kHz}$> = 20log(TL) - 68.8 and <$TS_{38kHz}$> = 20log(TL) - 69.4, respectively.
