  • The nektonic assemblages of upper tidal flat area located in the Jangbong Island, near Incheon, were studied using a fence net from March to November 2001. A total of 49 species were recorded, with a mean abundance and biomass of 489 individuals and 5,170.4 g, respectively. The most abundant species by number were Exopalaemon carinicauda(40.9%) and Johnius grypotus(13.2%). By catch weight the dominant species were Acanthogobius hasta(33.7%), Johnius grypotus(14.6%) and Scomberomorus niphonius(10.2%). The conventional multivariate statistics(Cluster analysis and non-metric Multi-Dimensional Scaling) applied to assess temporal variation in nektonic communities. As a result of cluster analysis and MDS ordination, the faunal group could be divided into spring and summer/autumn dominant species group. The spring species included the pisces Acanthogobius luridus, the crab Macrophthalmus japonicus and the gastropods Bullacta exarata and Lunatia gilva. The summer/autumn species were the pisces J. grypotus, Sardinella zunasi, Konosirus punctatus, Chelon haematocheila, S. niphonius and Takifugu niphobles, the shrimp Metapenaeus joyneri and the cephalopod Loligo beka.

  • Species composition of fish in the shallow water at Daecheon beach was determined using monthly beach seine samples collected from April 2010 to March 2011. These data were compared with the previous data, one just after reclamation in 1984-1985, and the other in 1995-96, in order to assess the post-reclamation impact of the environmental change on the fish assemblage. A total of 30 species from 1,464 individuals with biomass of 17,808 g were identified. Dominant species in the number of individuals were Chelon haematocheilus (49.3%), Takifugu niphobles (13.7%) and Paralichthys olivaceus (10.0%). Among pelagic fish, migrant juvenile fish such as Sardinella zunasi and Thryssa kammalensis were abundantly collected in 1984-85, but the catch amount was gradually decreased as time untill only few pelagic fish were collected in 2010-2011. The benthic fish were most abundant in 1984-1985 among habitat groups, and Favonigobius gymnauchen and Kareius bicoloratus were the top two predominants. Species composition of benthic fish did not exhibited drastic changes in 1995-1996, but both the abundance decline and the species composition change was evident in 2010-2011. Among the semi-benthic fish from 1984-1985 samples, Sillago japonica and Konosirus punctatus predominated. Species composition was slightly changed in 1995-1996, but significant changes were met in 2010-2011 with the two predominats, Chelon haematocheilus and Takifufu niphobles. These changes in fish species composition may reflect the post-reclamation effect of the impaired water quality and the accumulation of organic rich fine sediments.

  • A study on the species composition and seasonal variations of fishery creatures caught by a funnel net was carried out in the coastal water off Dolsan Island, Yeosu from 2002 to 2003. During the study period, a total of 23 fishery creatures species were caught. Seabream(Acanthopagrus schlegeli), sea bass(Lateolabrax japonicus), mullet(Mugil cephalus), puffer(Takifugu niphobles) and rockfish(Sebastes inermis) predominated. These five species accounted for 85.1% of the total number of fishery creatures caught. Seasonal peaks of number of species occurred in summer, while those of number of individuals occurred in autumn. The lowest number of species and individuals were observed in winter. The large annual variation of diversity indices were observed from May to August. These large annual variation of diversity indices were mainly due to predominance of seabream, sea bass and mullet which accounted for most of all fishery creatures caught. The seasonal variations of fishery creatures showed that sea bass and mullet were caught mainly from spring to summer, seabream and puffer were caught mainly in autumn, and rockfish and brotula(Hoplobrotula armata) were caught mainly in winter.

  • Fish community structure between eelgrass beds and an adjacent unvegetated area was investigated. Fishes were collected monthly from two eelgrass beds (Gamak and Yeoja Bays) and one adjacent unvegetated area in the southern sea of Korea between February 2006 and February 2007. The number of species for the Gamak and Yeoja Bays were 33, 28, respectively, while 28 species were identified from the unvegetated area. Leiognathus nuchalis was dominant in both Gamak and Yeoja Bays, while Engraulis japonicus was dominant in the unvegetated area. Cluster analysis conducted on total number of individuals for each species produced 3 groups; group A (appeared only in winter regardless of eelgrass), group B (appeared in eelgrass beds during all seasons except winter) and group C (appeared in the unvegetated area during all seasons except winter). The most important differentiating species between eelgrass beds and the unvegetated area were Lateolabrax japonicus, L. nuchalis, Takifugu niphobles and Pholis nebulosa. Based on the results of this study we can assume that eelgrass beds function as a nursery ground for young fishes from spring to fall, but not in winter.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of shallow water fish off Yongwon, Jinhae in the southern coast of Korea was determined by the analysis of monthly samples collected by a beach seine from January to December, 1998. Among 54 species identified, the resident species such as Favonigobius gymnauchen, Chaenogobius laevis, Pholis nebulosa and juvenile Hyporhamphus intermedius were predominated in abundance. The temporal species such as Sardinella zunasi, Leiognathus nuchalis and Takifugu niphobles were collected between April and September. Mean abundance (322 individuals/1000 $m^2$ or 806 g/1000 $m^2$) was higher than that in the shallow sand surf zone of Teachon, but lower than that in the shallow mud area of Chonsu Bay in the western coast of Korea. A large number of H. intermedius were collected in cold months between November and January. The dominant resident species began to be collected from february, and the number of species and biomass were increased until July. A small number of temporal species were collected and subsequently the abundance was low from August to October when high abundance was expected as in the other shallow waters by recruitment of a large number of juveniles of temporal species. The low abundance in these warm months seemed to be related to the water quality by weak water circulation in this shallow mud area.
