The development of Human Computer Interface has been relied on the development of technology. Mice and keyboards are the most popular HCI devices for personal computing. However, device-based interfaces are quite different from human to human interaction and very artificial. To develop more intuitive interfaces which mimic human to human interface has been a major research topic among HCI researchers and engineers. Also, technology in the TV industry has rapidly developed and the market penetration rate for big size screen TVs has increased rapidly. The HDTV and digital TV broadcasting are being tested. These TV environment changes require changes of Human to TV interface. A gesture recognition-based interface with a computer vision system can replace the remote control-based interface because of its immediacy and intuitiveness. This research focuses on how people use their hands or arms for command gestures. A set of gestures are sampled to control TV set up by focus group interviews and surveys. The result of this paper can be used as a reference to design a computer vision based TV interface.
An estimated 1 billion mobile phone were sold globally in the year 2006. In Korea, people watch television 3.17 hours in a day. Television isn't what it used to be. Digital TV provides both interactivity and high definition. Mobile phone also transferred from 2G to 3G or 3.5G. This means the complexity of TV and mobile phone is increased, design of user interface is more difficult. Unlike the personal computer industry, TV and mobile phone industries have no standard user interface. A comparative study for user interface between TV and mobile phone is studied. User, task, system are analyzed in requirement analysis. User interface model and interaction are also analyzed between TV and mobile phone. This study provides some insights for user interface design. First, the UI designer have to consider another products because one user using one product at the same time using another products. Experience for one product affects that for another product. Second, TV and mobile phone show very similar pattern, especially interaction task and input interaction. Third, there are not sometimes optimized experience between service operator and device manufacturer. Cooperative design between them is required.
One of the major requisites for the success of the smart-TV is to create a circumstance where smart-TV app's are produced and purchased on a large scale. However, the smart TV app's may succeed only under the condition that the user interface of the smart TV is greatly evolved from the typical TV remote controller. Several equipments have been devised to tackle the problem of the poor user interface of the smart-TV; however, they are not satisfactory in the aspects that they usually increase the costs of TV-set and they do not help practically the app developers. The equipments are pre formed so that it is hard for the app developers to design their own user interface using them. In the paper, sMartUX, a method for developing the smart-TV app is introduced. sMartUX provides a new paradigm and development environment for designing, implementing, and operating the user interface of the smart TV app using a smart-phone. With sMartUX, app developers can design their own user interface using the various facilities of a smart-phone, and they need not to care the details of various smart-phones and how to launch their user interface onto a smart-phone.
In this paper, we developed digital TV interactive game using mobile device. This enables a TV viewer to participate in the game using mobile devices. Recently, advanced interface is adopted in the mobile devices, especially touchpad type interface is favorable. Such type interface has the advantage of more familiar interface for users, and the user can input various type of action. Using a mobile phone enables many users can participate in the TV game, and provides a private screen. In this paper, we describe contributions of the program in detail, and we present the architecture and a demonstration of the proposed program in a similar broadcasting environment.
Interests for User Interface directly influencing on usability are also growing as the competition between DCATV and IPTV come to the surface, according to getting activated Interactive TV market. Therefore, this study has the purpose to understand mental models of users for Interactive TV service & Interface. The methods for this study are as follows. First, as the step considering literature study, we compared differences between DCATV and IPTV and caught up the concepts of DCATV and IPTV among some types of Interactive TV. Second, we examinated and analysed Hello TV, C&M, Broad&TV, MegaTV, myLGtv as the step of analysis for examples for Interactive TV. Third, as the step of researches observing users we analysed usability problems caused by differences of mental models between DCATV and IPTV. As a result, we could find there are some differences for mental model of users in Interface & services between DCATV and IPTV Especially, it was found that users feel confused very much regarding perception of real time broadcasting and VOD. We regards this findings can be used as basic for concept makings of Interactive TV, when TV interface is developed in the future.
There can be three objectives why we apply 3D graphics in TV interface. First, inevitable usability. 3D space is the most inevitable way for product-user interaction deviating from the current aesthetic or technical purpose of use. Second, enhance emotional satisfaction by merging interface into real life. Beyond digilog(analog+digital), we wanted users to naturally use the interface as if they are using everyday objects. And in order to do this properly, we analyzed the behaviors of users how they use their everyday objects and then analyzed the attributes beyond each behavior. Third, capaticy for enourmous contents of the incorporated TV. The most efficient way to display enormous amounts of contents in a limited screen is 3D. And that 3D space gives us almost unlimited capacity in accepting contents. Now to conclude, using 3D graphics for TV interface has significance in many ways but the issue is how we can maintain the 3D effects while customizing them into real products.
Changed TV, that has multi-channel and interactive attribute, requires viewer's activity. Also, broadcasting environment and TV user interface require same things equally. But, the viewer feels uncomfortable in current situation because they recognize the TV as passive media. especially, TV interface can't overcome limitation of TV media. And such interface is provided as it is. This problem brings viewer's confusion and dissatisfaction more and more. This study raises a question about viewer's activity and satisfaction, analyzes the relation and effect between activity and satisfaction.
A powerful interaction mechanism is one of the key elements for the success of smart TVs, which demand far more complex interactions than traditional TVs. This paper proposes a novel interface based on the famous touch interaction model but utilizes long-range bare hand tracking to emulate touch actions. To satisfy the essential requirements of high accuracy and immediate response, the proposed hand tracking algorithm adopts a fast color-based tracker but with modifications to avoid the problems inherent to those algorithms. By using online modeling and motion information, the sensitivity to the environment can be greatly decreased. Furthermore, several ideas to solve the problems often encountered by users interacting with smart TVs are proposed, resulting in a very robust hand tracking algorithm that works superbly, even for users with sleeveless clothing. In addition, the proposed algorithm runs at a very high speed of 82.73 Hz. The proposed interface is confirmed to comfortably support most touch operations, such as clicks, swipes, and drags, at a distance of three meters, which makes the proposed interface a good candidate for interaction with smart TVs.

Current paper introduces the multimedia functional module and related interface development for digital TV. The module is developed for displaying the image captured by digital still camera, camcorder, or PC in the digital TV. For these purposes, the module has the interface circuit for accessing five media type of memory cards. It decodes JPEG, BMP, or TIFF image date saved in the memory card and converts the image data to analog RGB signal. It also supports three types of output image size from HD(High Definition) to WXGA(Wide Extended Graphics Array) resolution. So the introduced module could be adopted in all kinds of digital TV set.
