The conveyance of health information through mass media is becoming more popular, even through recreation at television programs. This study aims to investigate the influence of health related TV programs for recreation on a practice action of health behavior. In particular, the relationship between attitude, belief, and behavioral practice of the TV audience is explored. Data was collected from 200 respondents for two weeks in May, 2002. The results showed that the motive of the TV audience for watching TV recreation programs was either entertainment or fun. They satisfied with the programs in general. However, the rate of desirable health behavior practice after watching those programs was low. The degree of practice was significantly correlated with belief, satisfaction, and application possibility of the TV audience to the program. In addition, two personal factors such as gender and subjective evaluation of personal health status were significant in influencing health behavior. The appearance of experts on programs was the most important factor influencing the belief of an audience. This implies that audiences want to have the health information fulfilling scientific evidences. It is suggested that TV recreation programs would be beneficial to most audience members for in receiving important health information, only if recreation and interest factors in the program as well as the evidence-based health information and knowledge are successfully combined.
The current study examined the influence of current TV health programs on old people's practice of health behaviors through analyzing their recognition, watching behaviors and satisfaction. The study conducted 293 old people living in Pohang City, North Gyeongsang Province from March 17, 2008 to March 28, 2008. The results of this study were as follows: 86.3% of the respondents has watching experience of TV health programs in a month while there was a meaningful difference in frequency of watching by education, obesity and a clinical history. The degree of health behavior practice, 62.1% answered high while 17.7% said low. Factors that influence the degree of health behavior practice were sex, interest in health and experience of watching. In addition, men practiced 1.78 times more than women, those with more interest in health practiced 3.3 times of those with no interest, and those with watching experience presented 6.1 times higher practice degree than those with no experience. It was found that old people's recognition for TV health programs was positive, and the more frequently they watch the programs, the higher their practice of health behaviors was. In addition, old people's popularity rate of TV health programs means that they have a lot of opportunities to be exposed to information provided in health programs. Accordingly, it is thought that TV health programs should try to provide correct health information that can meet old people's needs.
Objectives: Television is the most influencing mass media. It has taken an important part in our daily life as the information source. Transmitted informations are the important sources for building one's conscience, value and behavior for all age groups from young children to aged. Methods: In this paper, all land-based TV programs for young children has been monitored by quantity and quality from July 1st 2008 'till December 31st. General programs for young children have been monitored by its theme, type, contents delivery method, proportion of diet and health information in the program, and appropriateness. For the analysis, SPSS was used. Results: Young children's program 2,771 programs and 47,169 minutes during the period were monitored. From programs for young children about 'general' and 'cooking', there were 48programs(30.6%) that has contents about dishes, 47programs(29.9%) about food and nutrition, 34programs(21.7%) about life habits. From the programs, diet and health has been delivered by 'practical exercise(38.9%)', by 'cartoon & puppet show(31.2%)', followed by 'explanation from experts(15.3%)', 'song & movement(8.9%)', and 'simple introduction(4.4%)'. From programs for young children about 'general' and 'cooking', there were 157programs that has contents about ideas and delivery method being considered, 'appropriate(45.7%)' for giving positive and 'inappropriate(54.3%)' for its negative influence to young children, the need of improvement was suggested. Conclusion: Considering the importance of infancy in one's lifetime, not only specific field but each program for young children itself should be monitored by experts of each field. A plan on how to deliver accurate content effectively to young children should be searched in various ways.
The purpose of this study was to do the quantitative analysis about food and nutrition informations in TV program by monitoring newscastings, health-related food and nutrition information programs, dramas for family, education programs for children, and seniors’ information programs in major TV broadcasting companies (KBS, MBC, SBS, EBS). In this study, number of cases about the health-related food and nutrition informations and the length of program were analyzed. Also, they were compared and analyzed by the year. Monitoring staff, who had majored in food and nutrition and completed the monitoring training, monitored programs and analysis the quantity of food and nutrition informations in each program from 2002 to 2003. Results of quantitative analysis for this study are as follows; There were total number of 15,226 cases. Among them, the total number of health-related information was 5,623 cases(36.9%), and the total number of food-related information was 3,848 cases (25.3%). The ratio of total food and nutrition information to total health-related informations was 86.2%. In news programs from 2002 to 2003, the total number of health-related information to total cases decreased to 16.1% from 17.9%. The ratio of total food and nutrition information to total cases decreased to 3.6% from 6.6%. The frequency of the health-related informations was mostly served in the newscastings was highest, in both October 2002, and September 2003. In health information programs from 2002 to 2003, the ratio of food and nutrition information to total cases increased to 57.4% from 32.4%. In dramas from 2002 to 2003 , the ratio of broadcasting time of food-related scenes to total cases decreased to 17.2% from 20.8%. In education programs for children the ratio of food and nutrition information to total cases was 8.2% in 2002. In information programs for seniors the ratio of food and nutrition information was to total cases 26.2% in 2002. As the result of this study, the rate of health-related information in TV program and the rate of food and nutrition information were changing. And the rate of nutrition information in health information programs are increased. To give sound informations to the public, monitoring should be established and managed continuously.
The study aimed to perform the qualitative analysis of food and nutrition informations offered in TV program by monitoring newscastings, health-related programs giving food and nutrition information, dramas for family, education programs for children, and information programs for elderly in major TV broadcasting station(KBS, MBC, SBS, EBS). In this study, statistical analysis were done for numbers of information items related to health or food and nutrition informations. Duration of program the main, subject, sources, evaluation criteria of the contents. Results of qualitative monitoring for TV program are as follows. For health-related informations major propotions of subjects for the newscastings were about diseases. Those for health information programs were about foods. Those for children-education programs were about groceries. Those for seniors’ information programs were about eating habits. The analysis of food and nutrition information sources for most of programs were interviews with specialist and normal person, and on-the-spot-investingations. For food and nutrition informations those were evaluated as inappropriate, the propotion of news was increased to 72.2% in 2003 from 49.3% in 2002. For health information programs, it was increased to 67.7% in 2003 from 54.0% in 2002. But, in drama the propotion of inappropriate scenes were decreased to 16.2% in 2003 from 63.2% in 2002. In children-education programs, it was 40.0%. In seniors’ information programs, it was 17.9% in 2002. The propotion of cases that the quantity of foods is inappropriate in the food scene of serial drama, decreased to 15.8% in 2003 from 28.6% in 2002. The rate of drinking scenes increased to 11.5% from 10.7%. The rate of smoking scenes decreased to 0.2% from 1.6% due to the broadcasting self-regulation of smoking scenes in dramas. In the newscatings and information programs, reasons of being evaluated as inappropriate was that they didn’t have any practical suggestions and proper intakes. There were also insufficient explanation for technical terminology, different comparison standard of nutritive value, and exaggeration for physiological effect of food. The drama contained a lot of unnecessary scenes of alcohol drinking, coffee drinking, midnight meal, and had more quantity of foods than the quantity needed for persons to the scene. As the result of this study, the rate of food and nutrition information were high, but the rate of information which was evaluate as appropriate was not sufficient. There are need to improve contents of information and to moniter the contents for consumer.
The purpose of this study is to analyze information about dietary information presented in the television broadcast media in order to determine the optimal communication method that will provide desirable information to the general public. To that end, stakeholders were recruited and trained before and during the study. Three airwaves broadcasters and four comprehensive programming channels were monitored for Three months. The results are as follows. In total 172 food and nutrition programs are reported on. As information from the monitored programs was investigated, results showed a frequency of 136 separate informative programs (79.1%) and 36 entertainment programs (20.9%). Second, the broadcasters included are KBS, MBC, SBS, while the channels are TV Chosun, JTBC, Channel A, and MBN. Third, 109 reports (63.3%) were about ingredients & cuisine, followed by 63 reports (36.7%) on health and diet. This research provides transitional knowledge regarding the correlation between dietary information and the media. Moreover, this research contributes to advocating public health by enhancing the quality from broadcast media about dietary information.
In order to examine the television(TV)'s role of nutrition education and the nutritional interests and problems of the general public in the 1990s, a comtents analysis was done on two nutrition-related TV programs, a regular round-table talk show and a newscast. Broadcast from January 1993 to July 1997 and from January 1997 to July f1997, respectively. Nutrition-related information was classified into five categories. Food and nutrient(39.5%) and diseases(34.7%) were most frequently telecasted, which were followed by food habits and general health(13.0%), traditional dishes and cookery(8.2%), and food sanitation and safety(4.6%). In becoming the latest year, some trends in the issues displayed increased telecasts about disease, dish and cookery, and food safety, while the telecasting of food and nutrient decreased. The contents about the relations hip between life-style(including diet) and chronic degenerative diseases and the importance of balanced diets and regualr meals for health promotion became particularly emphasized. Overall, two TV programs provided the public with positive, practical, and sometimes practive nutrition education messages for improving eating life and health care. They also raised the public's awareness of the nutritional importance of Korean staple foods such as rice, kimchi, seaweed, and soysauce, and they sometimes satified the audience's curiosities by introducing Korean food culture or foods of Buddhist priests. When the accident of food toxicity occurred concrete information about how to manage it was rapidly given to the public. In addition they played a role in food balance policy by telecasting over-product foods such as garlic and onion. However some negative points appeared. Telecasts on milk and its products and diabetes mellitus showed the least frequently. These shows should be broadcast more often considering the present nutrition and health problems in Korea. Some functions or effects of foods were mostly explained by only physicians of Chinese medicine. Sometimes misinformed, unclear, overemphasized, biased, or unfair information was televised to the public. If these problems could be solved through the sincere cooperation between nutrition faculty and TV produces, become televison could a more complete and effective medium for educating the public about nutrition.
This study aims to consider the criteria and signification of 'aging' constructed in media in Korean society that has entered aging society. For the purpose, this study analyzed KBS the representative TV health programs. According to the result, designs the measurable indexes of aging to rank the casts. And it emphasizes to the casts that cannot reach a certain level the support from medical experts or advanced medical technology. With such characteristics of individual text, this paper found the ideological codes of the health programs. They contrast the elderly who have achieved successful aging from those that have not. They define the aged who have not practiced self-management or medical control to prevent aging properly as failure and also make fun of them. They draw aging that was not regarded as some kind of disease in the past into the area of medicine. Besides, the medicalization of aging regarded as an object for treatment may come to strengthen the control of medical experts and also individualize social issues.
In order to investigate if nutrition-related TV programs give the public correct and useful imformation, 26 producers(PD) having worked for any one of the nutirtion-related TV programs were surveyed by using questionnaire on the attitudes toward seeking an expert's advice about the issues and the panelist's constitution of one typical nutrition-related TV show program broadcasted during the last 5 years was analyzed. The most important reason for selecting the nutrition-related issues was to satisfy the interests and demands of audiences. Both being motivated by food-related accidents and to educate people for the health promotion were the second ones. In the process of nutrition-related program production, 53.9% of PDs always requested expert's advice, while 46.1% occasionally did. Professors in food and nutrition were regarded as the most proper advisor. Dietitians, physicians and physicians of Chinese medicine wer the next in order. The similar pattern were shown in the rankd of specialists actually invited as panelists to the program. Both the speciality and being well-known were less positive and favorable for participating in the program compared to experts in other areas. The number of programs about food and nutrition broadcasted on the TV show during 1993-1997(July) was 361(about 30%). The total of 1,043 specialists appeared, 2.9 persons per program on the average. Of these, only 12.9% were professors in food and nutrition as well as dietitians. The largest(20.2%) was physicians or medical professors, and 13.6% cooks and 12.6% physicians of Chinese medicine. Of 361 programs 45 were thought to be undesirable on the panelist constitution. Particualrly in 19 programs, where nutritionists were not invited, physicians or physicians of Chinese medicine explained diet therapy, food, nutrient or dietary habit.
The purpose of this study is to provide an effective program contents of information supplied by broadcasting media with the aim of developing health program models. Health programs which have been aired and are being aired on KBS I radio, KBS, EBS, Cable TV and SBS radio were analyzed in order to understand the issues of current health programs and to design a plan for improvement. In order to address current issues of health programs, the range of health information should be extended to meet various expectations from the public audience, in addition to dealing with diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. Programs should be capable of encompassing various issues such as health practice, prevention, information on medical facilities, public health policies, daily health information, and the role of patients. As health programs function as major information sources for health services, it is necessary to raise the quality and credibility of broadcasting. Broadcasting agencies has a responsible role for public health promotion through health programs. In order to make it possible for broadcasting to fulfill its social responsibility, it is advisable to develop programs that have a clear understanding of what is the cognition of the public and the level of demand in regard to health programs.
