Remarks on Education Method to Turn Failure Experience to Instructions for Engineering Design

  • This article proposes to examine how the study of failure differs from other technical subjects, and how to turn failure experiences to one's advantage. The authors surveyed the properties of failures in PBL (Project Based Learning) and also examined students' interest and understanding of failure, after introducing failure examples. To investigate how students communicate failure experiences to third parties, reports of the failure experience in PBL were evaluated. From above mentioned surveys, we get the following results. The typical causes of failure in educational institutions are lack of skill in manufacturing and inadequate planning, which conversely are minor causes of failure in the industry. A knowledge database on failure, employed commonly in industry, is not effective in PBL, because projects in educational institutes are usually changed every year. Case studies in failure can be approached from many points of view including causes, processes, effects and safety measures. While teachers should emphasize the notable points in the failure examples in introducing examples of specific topics in machine design, teachers should explain the multiple aspects in the failure examples to educate students about the complexity of actual accidents.

  • The emergence of a magnetic flux tube (flux emergence) is a process of transporting magnetic field from the solar interior to the atmosphere. This process naturally produces bipolar structure at the surface, in which emerging field lines simply connect opposite polarities, while observations suggest that the surface distribution of magnetic field is more complicated than a simple bipole. This study is aimed at solving this apparent mismatch between the model and observations, showing how the surface distribution changes from a simple bipolar distribution to a quadrupolar-like one, where a half-turn rotation of the polarity inversion line plays an important role. We explain the physical reason of this half-turn rotation and also discuss a possible configuration of filament magnetic field in terms of the quadrupolar-like structure formed via flux emergence.

  • In this paper, dc reactor lot the inductive high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) was optimally designed by finite element method(FEM). The Prototype high-Tc do reactor was manufactured and compared to the results of design. This dc reactor consists of 4∼stacked double pancake coils which are wounded with Bi-2223 wire coated with SUS315L. Kapton tape is used for the insulation of turn to turn and layer to layer. Each pancake is connected in series by soldering Finally, optimal design and manufacture method lot the dc reactor is suggested in this paper. Through the comparison of result of optimal design and experimental result of prototype high-Tc superconducting dc reactor, reliance on the design of the high-Tc dc reactor tot the 1.2 kV/80 A SFCL is proved.

  • A class-D zero voltage switching (called soft-switching) inverter with only one capacitor in parallel with both FET, along with an approximate analysis and experimental results, is introduced. The inverter offers both zero turn-on and zero turn-off switching losses, yielding high efficiency at high frequencies. In addition, soft switching reduces switching noise associated with the high frequency ringing at the swithching instants.

  • A shorted-turn test was performed at the Pyungtaek combined cycle power plant on gas. turbine generator #4. The test was conducted using a permanent flux probe and digital oscilloscope. The flux probe installed in the generator air gap, senses the field winding slot leakage flux and produces a voltage proportional to the rate of change of the flux. This pattern of flux variation is a signature unique to each field winding. We have also applied a waveform analysis technique that can identify the pole location, slot number, and number of shorted-Turns with each slot.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 Pspice를 이용하여 SI Thyristor의 구조적인 특징과 스위칭 동작을 설명하면서도 비교적 간략화된 등가 모델을 개발하는 것에 있다. 이러한 목표로 등가모델은 SI Thyristor의 구조적 형태에 기반을 두어 BJT 소자를 이용한다. 또 게이트 구조와 스위칭 매커니즘을 고려한 MOSFET, Steady state Turn on 상태에서 dominant 모델인 PIN Diode로 구성되어 있다. 개발된 등가모델을 스너버회로와 함께 스위칭 과도응답을 시뮬레이션하였으며 그 결과는 실제 실험결과와 비교하여 검증하였다. 비교적 간단하게 고안된 회로를 통해 Turn On/Off 동작에서 스위칭 특성을 예측할 수 있으므로 펄스파워용 스위치로서 SI Thyristor의 시동특성을 해석하는 데 본 등가모델을 활용할 수 있을 것으로 전망한다.

  • In this paper, it is consider spike voltage that is generated by ignoring the recovery time of switching device, turn on and turn off time. In the same principle, this spike voltage will be applicable to diode recovery time. The spike voltage causes to break down insulation of input transformer. So, we will show how to remove spike voltage by optimizing value of R and C and using switching diode which have fast recovery time.

  • The MOS-controlled thyristor(MCT) is a new power semi-conductor device that combines four layers thyristor structure presenting regenerative action and MOS-gate providing controlled turn-on and turn-off. The MCT has very fast switching speed owing to voltage controlled MOS-gate, and very low on-state voltage drop resulting from regenerative action of four layers thyristor structure. In addition, because of a higher dv/dt rating and di/dt rating, gate drive circuit and snubber circuit can be simpler comparing to other power switching devices. So recently much interest and endeavor is being applied to develop the performance and ratings of the MCT. This paper describes the switching characteristic of the MCT for its practical applications and presents a model for PSPICE circuit simulation.   • In this paper, A fixed turn-on, variable turn-off control method considering the reference speed and load is shown with verification by using MATLAB Simulink. The proposed method uses simple operation and is suitable to the system of low-cost application and also advantageous for reducing the torque ripple.

  • In this paper, the learnability of haptic icons was tested as a way of conveying turn-by-turn directions to users involved in navigation interactions with commercial smartphones. To do this, six most distinctive haptic icons were identified from those having different duration of each pulse, interval between pulses, and rhythm. Associations between the selected haptic icons and 3 pairs of navigation directions were analyzed using data gathered from 30 subjects by 7 point Likert scale. The haptic icons were then assigned to proper directions based on the results from that stereotype analysis. The results showed that the commercial smartphone with one linear motor at a fixed location is not capable of making hapticons to have clear directional stereotypes. The hapticons with poor stereotypes has no advantage in learnability compared to those of random assignment.
