  • This study was initiated to evaluate hydrophilic polymers (hydrogels) as a new solid matrix medium for seed-priming of Heteropappus arenarius Kitam. Solid matrix priming (SMP)-media were prepared with the combination of Na- and K-based hydrogels and hydrogels with three different dry levels (DC; 70%, 80%, and 90%). Priming was performed in the dark at 15 or $20^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, and all primed seeds were incubated at $20^{\circ}C$ in the dark for the germination test. Non-primed seeds and seeds primed with distilled water (DW) were also included. To reach the germination rate of 50% ($T_{50}$), it took 4.0 days for non-primed seeds, and 3.6 and 3.9 days for DW-primed seeds at 15 and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. Na-based hydrogel-primed seeds with 70% DC (Na 70%) showed the fastest germination, which respectively took and 1.9 and 1.8 days at 15 and $20^{\circ}C$ to $T_{50}$. K-based hydrogel-primed seeds with 70% DC showed the fastest germination among K-based hydrogels with various DC levels, but it took 0.6 days more to $T_{50}$ compared to Na 70%. The hydration rate (HR) of DW-primed seeds was 37% lower than that of Na 70%-primed seeds at $15^{\circ}C$ priming temperature, which indicates that Na 70% priming is the best solid matrix priming condition for promoting the germination of H. arenarius seeds.

  • Objective: To compare short- and long-term dentoalveolar, skeletal, and rotational changes evaluated by Björk's structural method of superimposition between children with Class II malocclusion treated by functional appliances and untreated matched controls. Methods: Seventy-nine prepubertal or pubertal children (mean age, 11.57 ± 1.40 years) with Class II malocclusion were included. Thirty-four children were treated using an activator with a high-pull headgear (Z-activator), while 28 were treated using an activator without a headgear (E-activator). Seventeen untreated children were included as controls. Lateral cephalograms were obtained before treatment (T1), after functional appliance treatment (T2), and after retention in the postpubertal phase (T3). Changes from T1 to T2 and T1 to T3 were compared between the treated groups and control group using multiple linear regression analysis. Results: Relative to the findings in the control group at T2, the sagittal jaw relationship (subspinale-nasion-pogonion, p < 0.001), maxillary prognathism (sella-nasion-subspinale, p < 0.05), and condylar growth (p < 0.001) exhibited significant improvements in the Z- and E-activator groups, which also showed a significantly increased maxillary incisor retraction (p < 0.001) and decreased overjet (p < 0.001). Only the E-activator group exhibited significant backward rotation of the maxilla at T2 (p < 0.01). The improvements in the sagittal jaw relationship (p < 0.01) and dental relationship (p < 0.001) remained significant at T3. Condylar growth and jaw rotations were not significant at T3. Conclusions: Functional appliance treatment in children with Class II malocclusion can significantly improve the sagittal jaw relationship and dental relationships in the long term.

  • As a study on the method for energy-saving of the neon sign, this paper has systematically investigated the quantity of energy-consumption of the sign through a long period of time, according to the changes of the sign's ON/OFF speed, time ratio, etc. One neon sign(1 [kW] was built up for this. For this experiment, the ON/OFF periods(T) were set to 1.0,2.0,4.0 and 8.0[sec), and the ON time ratios(D) to 25, 50, 75 and 100 [%] respectively. Energy Analyzer was used for more accurate measurement. As the result, we found that the energy consumption of the sign had no effect on the ON/OFF period (T) when T was more than 2.0(sec), but that the energy consumption was decreasing when T was less than 2.0[sec]. The greatest value in the energy-saving of the sign appeared when the values of T and D were small altogather. And under the conditions, the energy consumption with T=1.0[sec) and D= 25[%] decreased 83.0[%] in comparison with the continuous ON case.

  • Background: Previously, stingless bee (Trigona spp.) products from East Kalimantan, Indonesia, were successfully screened for in vitro antiproliferative activity against human cancer derived cell lines. It was established that propolis from T. incisa presented the highest in vitro cytotoxicity against the SW620 colon cancer cell line (6% cell survival in $20{\mu}g/mL$). Materials and Methods: Propolis from T. incisa was extracted with methanol and further partitioned with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol. The in vitro cytotoxicity of the extracts was assessed by the MTT assay against human colon (SW620), liver (Hep-G2), gastric (KATO-III), lung (Chago) and breast (BT474) cancer derived cell lines. The active fractions were further enriched by silica gel quick column, absorption and size exclusion chromatography. The purity of each fraction was checked by thin layer chromatography. Cytotoxicity in BT-474 cells induced by cardanol compared to doxorubicin were evaluated by MTT assay, induction of cell cycle arrest and cell death by flow cytometric analysis of propidium iodide and annexin-V stained cells. Results: A cardol isomer was found to be the major compound in one active fraction (F45) of T. incisa propolis, with a cytotoxicity against the SW620 ($IC_{50}$ of $4.51{\pm}0.76{\mu}g/mL$), KATO-III (IC50 of $6.06{\pm}0.39{\mu}g/mL$), Hep-G2 ($IC_{50}$ of $0.71{\pm}0.22{\mu}g/mL$), Chago I ($IC_{50}$ of $0.81{\pm}0.18{\mu}g/mL$) and BT474 (IC50 of $4.28{\pm}0.14{\mu}g/mL$) cell lines. Early apoptosis (programmed cell death) of SW620 cells was induced by the cardol containing F45 fraction at the $IC_{50}$ and $IC_{80}$ concentrations, respectively, within 2-6 h of incubation. In addition, the F45 fraction induced cell cycle arrest at the G1 subphase. Conclusions: Indonesian stingless bee (T. incisa) propolis had moderately potent in vitro anticancer activity on human cancer derived cell lines. Cardol or 5-pentadecyl resorcinol was identified as a major active compound and induced apoptosis in SW620 cells in an early period (${\leq}6h$) and cell cycle arrest at the G1 subphase. Thus, cardol is a potential candidate for cancer chemotherapy.

  • In this study, 0.10Pb(SbS11/2TSnS11/2T)OS13T-(0.90-x)PbZrOS13T (0.25 x 0.40) ceramics were fabricated by the atmospheric method. The sintering temperature and time were 1250[$^{\circ}C$] and 2[2hr], respectively. The structureal, dielectric and piezoelectric properties with composition of PbTiOS13T were studied. As the results of XRD ans SEM, the crystal structure of a specimen was rhombohedral, lattice constant and average grain size were decreased with increasing the contents of PbTiOS13T. Relative dielectric constant and Curie temperature were increased with increasing the contents of PbTiOS13T, 0.10PSS-0.40PT-0.50PZ specimen had the highest values of 904 and 265[$^{\circ}C$], respectively. In increasing of PbTiOS13T contents form 25[mol%] to 40[mol%], piezoelectric charge constant and electromechanical coupling factors were increased form 114[pC/N] to 142[pC/N], 17[%] to 24[%] and mechanical quality factor were decreased with increasing the contents of PbTiOS13T. In the 0.10PSS-0.40PT-0.50PZ specimens, those values were 14.2[kV/cm] and 9.43[x10S0-6TC/cmS02T], resectively.

  • A comparative study of enzymatic properties between the trypsin from the cat-shark Cephaloscyllium umbratile ( C-T) and the two trypsins from the mackerel Scomber japonicus $(M-T_A\;and\;M-T_B)$ was carried out following after the previous paper(Pyeun et al., 1991). Trypsin from cat-shark(C-T) showed the higher heat stability compared to the others $(M-T_A\;and\;M-T_B)$ and its denaturation constant$(K_D)$ was $10.68\times10^{-4}\;sec^{-1}\;at\;55^{\circ}C$ with BA-p-NA substrate. The activation energies(Ea) of the trypsins measured at a temperature range from $30^{\circ}C\;to\;50^{\circ}C$ were estimated to be 4.07 kcal/mole for C-T, 11.61 kcal/mole for $M-T_A$, and 8.43kcal/mole for $M-T_B$, respectively. The Km values were $24.9\times10^{-5}\;M\;for\;C-T,\;5.37\times10^{-5}\;M\;for\;M-T_A,\;and\;9.65\times10^{-5}\;M\;for\;M-T_B$. On the other hand, the Ki values for TLCK and DFP determined by Dixon plot were $1.50\times10^{-6}\;M\;and\;9.28\times10^{-6}\;M\;for\;C-T\;2.86\times10^{-6}\;M\;and\;2.11\times10^{-4}\;M\;for\;M-T_A\;and\;3.90\times10^{-6}\;M\;and\;1.60\times10^{-4}\;M\;for\;M-T_B$ Similar amino acid profiles were showed between three trypsins each other, with few exceptions of $M-T_B$ containing higher amount of arginine, and the smaller amount of tryptophan in C-T than the others.

  • A good amount of work has been done on degree of approximation of functions belonging to Lip${\alpha}$, Lip($\xi$(t),r) and W($L_r,\xi(t)$) and classes using Ces$\`{a}$ro, N$\"{o}$rlund and generalised N$\"{o}$rlund single summability methods by a number of researchers ([1], [10], [8], [6], [7], [2], [3], [4], [9]). But till now, nothing seems to have been done so far to obtain the degree of approximation of functions using (N,$p_n$)(C, 1) product summability method. Therefore the purpose of present paper is to establish two quite new theorems on degree of approximation of function $f\;\in\;Lip({\alpha},r)$ class and $f\;\in\;W(L_r,\;\xi(t))$ class by (N, $p_n$)(C, 1) product summability means of its Fourier series.

  • A series of crosslinkable, waterborne polyurethanes (I-WBPUs) were prepared by in-situ polymerization using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI)/poly(tetramethylene oxide) glycol (PTMG, $M_n$=2,000)/dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA)/ethylene diamine (EDA)/triethylamine (TEA)/aminoplast[hexakis(methoxymethyl)melamine (HMMM)] as a crosslinking agent. Typical crosslinkable, waterborne polyurethanes (B-WBPUs) blended from WBPU dispersion and aqueous HMMM solution was also prepared to compare with the I-WBPUs. The crosslinking reaction between WBPU and HMMM was verified using FTIR and XPS analysis. The effect of the HMMM contents on the dynamic mechanical thermal, thermal, mechanical, and adhesion properties of the I-WBPU and B-WBPU films were investigated. The storage modulus(E'), glass transition temperatures of the soft segment ($T_{gs}$) and the amorphous regions of higher order ($T_{gh}$), melting temperature ($T_m$), integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT), residual weight, $T_{10%}$ and $T_{50%}$ (the temperature where 10 and 50% weight loss occurred), tensile strength, initial modulus, hardness, and adhesive strength of both I-WBPU and B-WBPU systems increased with increasing HMMM content. However, these properties of the I-WBPU system were higher than those of the B-WBPU system at the same HMMM content. These results confirmed the in-situ polymerization used in this study to be a more effective method to improve the properties of the WBPU materials compared to the simple blending process.
