The Social Media Factor: How Platforms Impact Usability of Blackboard at Umm Al Qura University

  • This study investigated the perceived usability of the Blackboard learning management system (LMS) amongst students at Umm Al-Qura University. A quantitative approach was employed to explore the potential relationship between Blackboard usability and social media platform usage. Additionally, the study aimed to identify other factors influencing perceived usability. Data were collected through a three-section questionnaire distributed electronically to a sample of students (n=544). The findings, based on System Usability Scale (SUS) scores, revealed that the overall perceived usability of Blackboard resided near the midpoint of the scale, indicating an "acceptable" level. A potential negative correlation emerged between social media usage time and perceived Blackboard usability. Students who reported lower social media usage exhibited higher SUS scores. Training on Blackboard usage demonstrably exerted a positive influence on perceived usability. Gender was not identified as a statistically significant factor. An analysis of student support methods revealed that seeking help from a friend was the most prevalent approach, followed by search engines, university technical support, and social media platforms. The findings suggest that implementing strategies to improve Blackboard usability at Umm Al-Qura University could be achieved through readily accessible training materials and the exploration of alternative support channels.

DetGas: A Carbon Monoxide Gas Leakage Detector Mobile Application

  • Many incidents of Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning have occurred because of people being unaware of its presence. There are currently available systems on the market, but they are limited to measuring CO in a certain area and lack vital functions. Additionally, little to no evidence-based information on their quality was available. Thus, a mobile application for detecting CO gas leakage in a vehicle and critical features to assist victims was developed. A usability and functionality test were conducted to determine the product's quality utilizing nine usability and six functionality task scenarios (n=5). Then, a System Usability Scale test was performed to obtain system satisfaction, usability, and learnability (n=50). The usability and functionality test shows that all the tasks given for both tests were 100% successful. The overall score obtained for SUS was 71.4, which indicates good acceptance and usability. Around 20% of respondents claimed that they would need the support of a technical person to be able to use the application and that they needed to learn a lot of things before they could use the application, which indicates the overall high learnability of the application. The result provides empirical evidence that the CO gas leakage detection mobile application is successful and receives good usability, functionality, acceptability, learnability, and satisfaction assessments. DetGas could benefit automobile owners and other stakeholders by mitigating the risk and harm associated with gas leaking that exceeds the safe limit.

  • "공인인증서 의무 사용" 폐지에 따라 모바일 기반 금융 서비스의 자율성이 높아지면서 다양한 인증 수단이 제공되고 있다. 대표적인 인증 수단으로는 SMS, ARS, PIN, 텍스트 패스워드, 지문 등이 있다. 본 연구에서는 통일된 모바일 환경에서 인증수단의 사용성, 안전성을 분석하였다. 사용성 평가에 있어서 SUS (System Usability Scale), 인터뷰를 통해 평가를 진행하였으며, NIST에서 제시한 전자인증가이드라인을 이용하여 각 인증 수단에 대한 안전성을 평가하였다. 연구 결과 지문 인식 기반 인증 수단이 가장 높은 사용성 등급을 나타내는 Excellent로 평가되었으며, 안전성 분석 결과에서도 지문 인식 기반 인증 수단이 Security Level 4를 획득하여 가장 안전한 인증 수단으로 평가되었다.

A Study on the Improvement of Korean Journal Citation Index Service

  • The KJC and KCI services operated by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) need to refer to the global citation index database to set the service direction that researchers want and develop new functions. Therefore, in this study, the usability of Korea's KJC and KCI web databases was evaluated. In addition, FGI verification was performed for a group of experts on KJC and KCI improvement measures derived by academic information experts. The evaluation committee consisted of the researcher group, the society related group, the publisher (academic information distribution organization) group, and the policy-making organization group. A total of 16 experts performed usability evaluation and service improvement proposals for KJC and KCI services. As a result of usability evaluation of KJC and KCI web database using SUS measurement tool, KJC service was evaluated as 73.44, and KCI service was evaluated as good as 64.38. KJC improvement proposals were evaluated positively with 4 points or more for all improvement items, and KCI improvement proposals were positively evaluated with 3.5 points or more for all improvement items. Overall, KJC and KCI error improvements were evaluated with a score of 4 or more, showing strong affirmations. In the future, it is hoped that the improvement proposals and improvements proposed in this study will be applied to the development of KJC and KCI services, so that more quality services will be used by domestic researchers.

줌과 스페이셜의 학습자 경험 비교 평가 (Comparison of a Learner's Experience on Zoom and Spatial)

  • 줌(zoom)은 COVID19 이후 비대면 온라인 수업 도구로 가장 대중적으로 사용되어 왔다. 하지만 최근 메타버스의 확산으로 인하여 수업 목적으로 메타버스 플랫폼의 활용이 증가하고 있다. 메타버스 플랫폼은 로블록스, 제페토, 스페이셜 등의 여러가지 유형이 있지만, 스페이셜은 온라인 강의실 생성과 다양한 학습 기능들을 제공하고 있고, 교수자와 학습자 또는 학습자와 학습자 간의 다양한 상호작용이 가능하기 때문에 대학 수업에서의 활용 가능성이 높다. 온라인 수업에서 스페이셜의 활용성을 높이기 위해서는 다양한 관점에서의 연구가 필요하고, 특히 줌과 비교한 스페이셜의 학습자경험을 비교 분석하는 것이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 학습자 경험을 비교분석하기 위하여 사용성, 몰입감, 만족도의 정량 분석과 학습자 의견에 대한 정성 분석을 수행하였다. 사용성 평가를 위하여 SUS(System Usability Scale)를 활용하였고, 몰입감과 만족도 평가를 위하여 Magnitude Estimation 방법을 활용하였다. 줌과 스페이셜을 활용한 수업에 참여했던 35명이 본 연구의 피실험자로 참여하였다. 줌과 스페이셜에 대한 사용성과 만족도는 줌이 스페이셜보다 유의수준 0.05에서 더 높게 나타났다. 반면 수업에 대한 몰입감은 스페이셜이 줌에 비해 더 높게 나타났다. 학습자들은 줌을 스페이셜보다 더 편하고 만족스럽게 생각하였다. 하지만, 스페이셜은 온라인 강의실 생성과 다양한 학습 기능들을 제공하고 있고, 교수자와 학습자 또는 학습자와 학습자 간의 다양한 인터랙션과 재미요소를 제공하기 때문에 수업에의 몰입도가 높게 나타났다. 향후 스페이셜의 사용자 인터페이스와 인터랙션의 개선이 이루어진다면 대학 수업에서 줌을 대체할 수 있는 효과적인 수업도구로 활용 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

Quality Evaluation on Emotion Management Support App: A Case on Early Assessment of Emotional Health Issues

  • Emotional health is important for overall health, and those who are experiencing difficulties should seek professional help. However, the social stigma associated with emotional health, as well as the influence of cultural beliefs, prevent many people from seeking help. This makes early detection difficult, which is critical for such health issues. It would be extremely beneficial if they could assess their emotional state and express their thoughts without prejudices. On the market, there are emotional health apps. However, there was little to no evidence-based information on their quality. Hence, this study was conducted in order to provide evidence-based quality in emotional health mobile apps. Eleven functionality task scenarios were used to assess functional quality, while a System Usability Scale test (n=20) was used to assess usability, customer acceptability, learnability, and satisfaction. The findings show that the app for emotional health management is highly efficient and effective, with a high level of user satisfaction. This contributes to the creation of an app that will be useful and practical for people experiencing early-stage emotional health issues, as well as related stakeholders, in order to manage early-stage emotional health issues.

척수 손상 장애인 대상 장애인용 풀링 케이블 운동기구의 사용성 평가: 개선점 도출을 중심으로 (Usability test of pulling cable exercise machine in the spinal cord injury disabled: Focusing on deriving improvement)

  • Background: Exercise equipments and assistive devices for the disabled are being developed, but improvements for usability are still needed. The purpose of this study was to improve and utilize the developed exercise equipment and assistance devices by conducting usability test for people with spinal cord injury. Design: Cross-sectional Study. Methods: Scenarios and usability indicators were derived by conducting a preliminary usability test, 5 non-disabled men and women aged 19 or older. In the scenario, a total of 9 tasks were sequentially performed, including 2 tasks of entry and exit, 5 tasks of assistance devices and weight stack adjustment, and 2 tasks of pre exercise and exercise. The usability indicators were task success (success or fail), execution time (sec), safety, and convenience. For safety, 7 questions (Likert scale, 1~5 point) related to safety, stability and hazard were derived, and for convenience, the system usability scale (SUS score) was used (range: 0~100, 50 percentile rank is 68 point). Results: As a result of the usability test of people with spinal cord injury, there was a large variation among subjects in the task of adjusting the position of the pulley and support in the execution time (11.64~25.44 seconds), and one person failed to adjust the pulley. The safety level showed a lower score (score = 3 points) than other items in the item of entrapment or skin pressure, and in the case of SUS, the average score was 64.5 points, which was close to the acceptable level. Conclusion: Through the usability test, it was confirmed that exercise equipment for the disabled needs improvement in operability, pinching, and pressure, and that it is necessary to develop an assistive device that provides unrestrained posture information (biofeedback) to maintain correct posture during exercise.

Interactive UI for Smartphone/ Web Applications and Impact of Social Networks

  • In today's digital world, smartphones and web-based applications have gained remarkable importance throughout the globe. These smart applications are playing a very significant role in maintaining a powerful business. As well as, they are helping a lot to expand these businesses via social networks. Social media networks such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are playing a prominent role to promote the companies. In the hospitality sector, most of the companies are running their hotel booking systems by utilizing mobile applications and a web-based infrastructure, but usability issues still exist. This study has been conducted specifically to tackle the usability issues of hotel booking systems and the best utilization of social networks to promote the business. TripAdvisor was selected as an authentic source for selecting those systems and two international hotels are selected for this study. The first step is to identify different hotel booking systems. In the second step, the user's satisfaction level was measured for the selected systems by performing the System Usability Scale (SUS, Quick & Dirty) approach. Additionally, by which source (social media or personal relations) they found these hotels. It is found that the SUS rating for both systems is below the acceptable level of usability. The Mean SUS for hotel 1 is found at 55.25 and 51.2 for hotel 2. The third step was to identify the user interface (UI) issues, and heuristic evaluation is performed for this. The experts identified the UI issues on the basis of their experience. The major issues were related to the visibility of system status, error prevention, flexibility and efficiency of use. Depending upon the identified issues, an interactive UI (prototype) for the selected web-based applications was proposed. This prototype is mainly based on the user's perspective. This prototype can be used for improving the UI of the selected systems which is based on the user's perspective. During the process of verifying the satisfaction level, it is revealed that the targeted audience is not able to use these systems efficiently and effectively. The reason behind this is the negligence of usability guidelines throughout the process of design and development of these hotel booking systems. Therefore, it is highly recommended that the usability of these systems should be evaluated and redesigned, based on expert opinions. It has also been observed that the reviews/ feedback of customers has spread a negative impact through social networks.

지능형 개인비서 서비스의 사용경험 비교 연구: 시리, 구글어시스턴트, 빅스비를 중심으로 (A Comparative Study of the Use of Intelligent Personal Assistant Services Experiences: Siri, Google Assistant, Bixby)

  • 본 연구는 지능형 개인비서 서비스의 사용 경험을 HCI의 평가 기준을 바탕으로 비교·분석하여 사용 경험의 긍정적인 요소와 개선되어야 할 요소를 탐색하고자 한다. 현 시장에서 점유율이 가장 높은 지능형 개인비서 서비스인 애플의 시리, 구글의 구글어시스턴트, 삼성의 빅스비를 대상으로 연구를 진행하였다. 연구 방법은 1차로 문헌 연구를 통하여 현 서비스의 개념과 특징에 대해 비교·분석하였고 2차로 약 2주간 UI/UX 디자인 전문가 7명을 대상으로 맥락질문법을 활용하여 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 인터뷰는 피터 모빌(Peter Morville)의 사용자 경험 허니콤(user experience honeycomb) 7가지 사용성 원칙을 5가지로 재구성하여 유용성, 편의성, 시각적 매력성, 신뢰성, 만족도에 대한 질문을 진행하였다. 이후 재구성한 사용성 원칙 내용을 바탕으로 평가 rating 및 시스템 사용성 척도 (SUS) 를 바탕으로 평가를 실시하였다. 본 연구는 인공지능 개인비서 서비스의 사용경험을 정량적, 정성적으로 분석했다는데 의의가 있다.

메타버스의 수업활용에 관한 사용자 경험 분석 - 스페이셜(Spatial)을 중심으로 - (Analysis of User Experience for the Class Using Metaverse - Focus on 'Spatial' -)

  • 본 연구에서는 학습자 관점에서 메타버스 플랫폼인 '스페이셜'을 중심으로 수업 도구로서의 사용자 경험을 분석하였다. 대학 수업에서의 메타버스 플랫폼 스페이셜의 사용성 평가를 위하여 SUS를 활용하였고, 스페이셜을 활용한 수업에 대한 몰입감과 만족도를 평가하기 위하여 Magnitude Estimation 방법을 활용하였다. 그리고 수업 도구로서의 스페이셜 사용에 관한 사용자 경험 의견을 수집하기 위하여 설문기법을 활용하였다. 스페이셜 시스템에 대한 사용성 평가 결과를 보면 수강생들은 스페이셜의 사용성, 몰입감, 만족도에 대해 꽤 긍정적으로 평가하였다. 그리고 메타버스 플랫폼 스페이셜의 사용자 경험 내용을 보면, 수강생들은 메타버스가 비대면 공간 속에서도 많은 사람들의 모여 소통할 수 있는 장을 제공할 수 있는 교육 도구로서 그 효용가치를 높게 평가하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 메타버스는 다른 온라인 플랫폼에 비하여 사용편의성, 상호작용, 몰입감, 흥미유발을 장점으로 들 수 있다. 특히 키보드와 터치방식, 그리고 디스플레이 외에 음성, 동작, 시선 등 오감을 활용한 상호작용이 가능하다는 것이 큰 장점으로 인식되었다. 반면 메타버스의 높은 개방성과 자유도, 그리고 흥미요소는 학습을 촉진하는 동시에 저해 요인이 될 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 결론적으로 메타버스 플랫폼 '스페이셜'은 온라인 강의실 생성과 다양한 학습 기능들을 제공하고 있고, 교수자와 학습자 또는 학습자와 학습자 간의 다양한 상호작용이 가능하기 때문에 대학 수업에서 효과적으로 적용할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.
