The study was conducted to evaluate the adsorption equilibrium of heavy metals on bone charcoal made of livestock bone which was sintered at $550{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. Analysis of bone charcoal by XRD and FT-IR showed that crystal structure was similar to that of synthetic hydroxyapatite. Adsorption equilibrium capacity of single component (Pb, Cd, and Zn) on bone charcoal could be expressed as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips equations. Sips isotherm was best among the three isotherms. The values predicted by IAST(ideal adsorbed solution theory) showed good relationship to the experimental data in multicomponent adsorption equilibrium. Adsorption affinity was in order of Pb, Cd, and Zn. The order was same in case of activated carbon or synthetic hydroxyapatite. Through the study results. it would be expected that bone charcoal made of livestock could be used in field of wastewater treatment plants as adsorbent to remove heavy metal.

This study was conducted to estimate if the level of several chemical ingredients including alkanolamines or ethanolamines (EA) examined in the specific synthetic metalworking fluid (MWF) ‘A’ can cause anti-microbial activity and health effect. Three water-based MWF products (‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’) were studied every week for two months. Chemical ingredients such as formaldehyde, boron, EA, and copper were examined. In the sump where MWF ‘A’ was used, not only the total level of EA, monoethanolamine(MEA), diethanolamine(DEA) and triethanolamine(TEA), but also boron level were significantly higher than those of the other MWFs. ANOVA statistical tests indicated that levels of pH, alkalinity, boron, MEA, DEA and TEA in MWF ‘A’ were significantly higher than those in other MWF types. Correlation tests also found that levels of pH, alkalinity, boron, MEA, DEA and TEA in MWF ‘A’ are significantly correlated. We suggested the assumptions that excessive concentrations of EA, and borate at a high pH level, may cause anti-microbial resistance synergically. To demonstrate this assumption, additional study is needed to examine the relationship between the levels of microbes and excessive concentrations of EA, and borate at a high pH level.
This paper was performed to study the utility of the SP(small punch) test and the AE(acoustic emission) test in the evaluation of SCC(stress corrosion cracking) susceptibility for parent metal and bond line of HT80 steel-weld joint by SAW(submerged arc welding) with the various pH values. The loading rate used was 3*10$^{-4}$ mm/min and the corrosive environment used was synthetic sea water during the SP test and the AE test. According to the test results, the SCC susceptibility of the parent metal was increased in the order of pH6.0, pH8.2 and pH10.0. On the other hand, the bond line showed almost the same high SCC susceptibility in all pH concentrations. Synthetically, from the results of the SCC susceptibility, the macro- and micro-SEM observation, the microfracture behaviors by AE test and the relationship between SCC susceptibility and displacement at incipient failure, .delta.$_{i.f-AE}$, it can be concluded that the SP test and the AE test are the good test methods to evaluate the SCC susceptibility for parent metal and bond line of the weld joint with the change of environmental factors.
The cause of corrosion failure found in structures or various components operating in severe corrosive environments has been attributed to stress corrosion cracking(SCC)which is resulting from the combined effects of corrosive environments and static tensile stress. Slow strain rate test (SSRT) provides a rapid reliable method to determine SCC susceptibility of metals and alloys for a broad range of application. The chief advantage of SSRT procedures is that it is much more aggressive in producing SCC than conventional constant strain or constant load tests, so that the testing time is considerably reduced. Therefore, in this paper, the combined effects of material properties and strain rate on the tensile ductility and fracture morphology of parents and weldment for SM45C, SCM440 and SM20C steels were examined and discussed in synthetic sea water. The susceptibility of SCC was the most severe under the strain rate of $1.0{\times}10^{-6} sec^{-1}$, and R.O.A. can be used for parent and maximum load for weldment to evaluate the parameter for SCC susceptibility.
Nitrogen compounds in municipal wastewater can be divided into biodegradable and nonbiodegradable fractions with biodegradability. Biodegradable nitrogen compounds can be removed through biological nitrification and denitrification processes, and nonbiodegradable nitrogen compounds affect the effluent quality of biological nutrient removal processes. The amount of nitrifiable nitrogen compounds, which are the sum of ammonia and biodegradable organic nitrogen, has been estimated by respirometry. Respirometry shows good estimation of the concentration of nitrifiable nitrogen when a synthetic sample of ammonium chloride is dosed. The estimated concentration of nitrifiable nitrogen compounds in municipal wastewater is close to ammonia concentration in municipal wastewater, but it is lower than that for the synthetic sample. If nitrogen assimilated into cell synthesis of nitrifiers and heterotrophs is considered, the total amounts of nitrifiable nitrogen compounds, which are nitrified and assimilated, could be more accurately estimated. The concentration of nitrifiable nitrogen compounds, which are biodegradable, is about 31 mg N/l, and this is 119% of ammonia and 94% of total nitrogen. Ammonia, nitrate, biodegradable organic nitrogen, and nonbiodegradable nitrogen are about 79%, 1%, 15%, and 5% of the total nitrogen in municipal wastewater, respectively.

Nutrient removal from synthetic wastewater was investigated using a MLE (Modified-Ludzack Ettinger) type MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor), with different phenol ($C_6H_5OH$) concentrations, in order to determine the inhibition effects of phenol on biological nutrient removal and the biodegradation of phenolic wastewater. The wastewater was prepared by mixing a solution of molasses with known amounts of phenol and nutrients. The experiments were conducted in a lab-scale MLE type MBBR, operated with four different phenol concentrations (0, 67, 100 and 168mg/L) in the synthetic feed. Throughout the experiments, the ratio of the phenolic COD concentration to the total COD was varied from 0 to 1. Throughout batch test, the SNR (Specific Nitrification Rate) and SDNR (Specific Denitrification Rate) were significantly influenced by changes of the phenol concentration. Phenol was inhibitory to the nitrification/denitrification process, and showed greater inhibition with higher initial phenol concentrations. The SNR observed with 0, 67, 100 and 168mg phenol/L were very different like 10.12, 6.95, 1.51 and $0.35mg\;NH_{3^-}N/gMLVSS$ hr, respectively. Similarly, the SDNR observed at 0, 67, 100 and 168mg phenol/L were different like 0.322, 0.143, 0.049and 0.006mgN/gMLVSS day, respectively.
This study was conducted to estimate if the level of several chemical ingredients including alkanolamines or ethanolamines (EA) examined in the specific synthetic metalworking fluid (MWF) "A" can cause anti-microbial activity and health effect. Three water-based MWF products ("A", "B", and "C") were studied every week for two months (from June 1, 2002 to July 30, 2002). Chemical ingredients such as formaldehyde, boron, EA, and copper were examined. In the sump where MWF "A" was used, not only the total level of EA, monoethanolamine(MEA), diethanolamine(DEA) and triethanolamine(TEA), but also boron level were significantly higher than those of the other MWFs. ANOVA statistical tests indicated that levels of pH, alkalinity, boron, MEA, DEA and TEA in MWF "A" were significantly higher than those in other MWF types. Correlation tests also found that levels of pH, alkalinity, boron, MEA, DEA and TEA in MWF "A" are significantly correlated.
Ecotoxicity assessments with the physiochemical water quality items and the bioassay test using Daphnia magna were conducted for 18 selected effluents of 6 industrial types (metal processing, petroleum refining, synthetic textile manufacturing, plating, alcohol beverage manufacturing, inorganic compound manufacturing) being detected toxicity from industrial effluent in Ulsan city, and the interrelationship between total toxic unit (${\Sigma}TU$) and concentrations of Water Quality Conservation Act in Korea were investigated. The average toxic unit(TU) of effluents for 6 industrial types displayed the following ascending order: petroleum refining (0.2) < synthetic textile manufacturing (0.6) < alcohol beverage manufacturing (0.9) < metal processing (1.3) ${\leq}$ inorganic compound manufacturing (1.3) < plating (3.0). These values were less than effluent permission standard. Based on the result of substances causing ecotoxicity, the correlation analysis was not easy because most of heavy metals were not detected or were less than effluent permission standard. Toxicological assessment of industrial effluent was suitable for the evaluation of the mixture toxicity for pollutant. The whole effluent toxicity test using a variety of species was needed for the evaluation of industrial wastewater.
The applicability of ARMA(1, 1) multiseason model, which is in the beginning stage of active researches in the field of synthetic generation is evaluated with the streamflow data at the Nakdong stage gauging station on the main stem of the Nakdong River. The method of parameter estimation for the modelis reviewed and the statistical analysis of the generated seasonal streamflows such as corrlogram analysis and the computation of moments is made. The results obtained by ARMA(1, 1) multiseason model are compared with the historical streamflow data and also with those by two other multiseason models, namely, Thomas-Fiering model and Matalas AR(1) multiseason model. The seasonal streamflows grnerated by three multiseason models were annually summed up to form respective annual flow series whose statistics were compared with those of the annual flow series generated by three annual models, namely, AR(1), Matalas AR(1), and ARMA(1, 1) annual models. The possibility of ARMA(1, 1) multiseason model for the simultaneous generation of seasonal and annual streamflows is also evaluated.
