The redundant sensor configuration problem of inertial navigation system(INS) is considered and analyzed the navigation and fault detection performance according to various sensor configurations. We considered various kinds of redundant sensor configurations for symmetric, cone, and orthogonal configurations and compare the navigation and fault detection performance for the configurations. We show that the navigation and fault detection performance is not affected by the coordinate change for a fixed configuration.
In this work, an effective stiffness generated by internal loading for a planar 3 degrees of freedom RCC mechanism is investigated. For this purpose, the internal kinematic analysis and antagonistic stiffness modeling for this mechanism are performed. It is shown that the antagonistic stiffness could be effectively created at the center of the mechanism in its symmetric configuration.

We have examined a technique of one-dimensional (1D) fluid modeling for radio-frequency Ar capacitively coupled plasmas (CCP) between unequal-sized powered and grounded electrodes. In order to simulate a practical CCP reactor configuration with a grounded side wall by the 1D model, it has been assumed that the discharge space has a conic frustum shape; the grounded electrode is larger than the powered one and the discharge space expands with the distance from the powered electrode. In this paper, we focus on how much a 1D model can approximate a 2D model and evaluate their comparisons. The plasma density calculated by the 1D model has been compared with that by a two-dimensional (2D) fluid model, and a qualitative agreement between them has been obtained. In addition, 1D and 2D calculation results for another reactor configuration with equal-sized electrodes have also been presented together for comparison. In the discussion, four CCP models, which are 1D and 2D models with symmetric and asymmetric geometries, are compared with each other and the DC self-bias voltage has been focused on as a characteristic property that reflects the unequal electrode surface areas. Reactor configuration and experimental parameters, which the self-bias depends on, have been investigated to develop the ID modeling for reactor geometry with unequal-sized electrodes.
To design a wide-field optical system, the inverted telephoto configuration, which has a negative front group and a positive rear group, is popular. For a two-mirror system, the inverse Cassegrain system has the inverted telephoto configuration, but the inverse Cassegrain system with the conventional, axially symmetric configuration shows severe field screening and ray obstruction. To avoid these problems, we put the aperture stop on the secondary mirror of an inverse Cassegrain system to increase field of view, and designed a wide-field off-axis two-mirror system which only uses the off-axis field, without ray obstruction.
The alternative method for symmetric configuration in optical link consisted of dispersion management and optical phase conjugation for compensating of the distorted optical signals due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects of standard single mode fiber is proposed. The symmetric configuration means number of fiber spans, dispersion distribution in former half section and latter half section, etc should be symmetrical about optical phase conjugator. In dispersion-managed proposed in this research, optical phase conjugator is located after former half section consisted of 6 fiber spans and before latter half section of 14 fiber spans, and the averaged residual dispersion per span (RDPS) of each half section are consistence. The compensation effects of the distorted signals in the proposed link is analyzed by comparing with the results obtained in dispersion-managed link with the unequally averaged RDPS of each half section. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that RDPS deviation between adjacent fiber span has a grater effect on the compensation than the equivalent of the averaged RDPS.
A computation was made to predict the movement of the thrust center position due to the rocket nozzle deflection. Three dimensional computations were done for the nozzle deflection angles of 0/1/3 degrees, and the oscillation of aerodynamic coefficients, not observed for the axisymmetric cases, was encountered. The position of the thrust center was found to be at -16 mm and -4 mm for the deflection angles of 1 and 3 degrees, respectively, and it can be concluded that the thrust center movement due to nozzle deflection is negligible. In addition to the computational results, the mechanism of thrust generation in a rocket engine is described with a brief mathematical derivation as it is sometimes mistaken. Also presented are some descriptions on the problem of pressure center definition for symmetric cases such as a rocket external flow problem and the nozzle deflection case.

In this paper is presented the solution method for three-dimensional problem of transversely isotropic body's elastoplastic deformation by the finite element method (FEM). The process of problem solution consists of: determining the effective parameters of a transversely isotropic medium; construction of the finite element mesh of the body configuration, including the determination of the local minimum value of the tape width of non-zero coefficients of equation systems by using of front method; constructing of the stiffness matrix coefficients and load vector node components of the equation for an individual finite element's state according to the theory of small elastoplastic deformations for a transversely isotropic medium; the formation of a resolving symmetric-tape system of equations by summing of all state equations coefficients summing of all finite elements; solution of the system of symmetric-tape equations systems by means of the square root method; calculation of the body's elastoplastic stress-strain state by performing the iterative process of the initial stress method. For each problem solution stage, effective computational algorithms have been developed that reduce computational operations number by modifying existing solution methods and taking into account the matrix coefficients structure. As an example it is given, the problem solution of fibrous composite straining in the form of a rectangle with a system of circular holes.

A pumpjet propulsor (PJP) was designed for an underwater body (UWB) with axi-symmetric configuration. Its performance was predicted through CFD study and models were manufactured. The propulsor design was evaluated for its propulsion characteristics through model tests conducted in a Wind Tunnel (WT). In the concluding part of the study, evaluation of the cavitation performance of the pumpjet was undertaken in a cavitation tunnel (CT). In order to assess the cavitation free operation speeds and depths of the body, cavitation tests of the PJP were carried out in behind condition to determine the inception cavitation numbers for rotor, stator and cowl. The model test results obtained were corrected for full scale Reynolds number and subsequently analyzed for cavitation inception speeds at different operating depths. From model tests it was also found that the cavitation inception of the rotor takes place on the tip face side at higher advance ratios and cavitation shifts towards the suction side as the RPS increases whereas the stator and cowl are free from cavitation.
The object of this paper is to compare stress intensity factor that be calculated by Raju-Newman's equation, finite element method, and Vessel INTegrity analysis inner flaws(VINTIN) program for longitudinal semi-elliptical cracks in cylindrical vessel under inner pressure. For this, three-dimensional finite-element analyses were performed to obtain the stress intensity factors for various surface cracks with t/R = 0.1. The finite element meshes were designed for various crack shapes with t/R of 0.1. The crack depth to thickness ratio, a/t, was set to 0.2 and 0.5 matching Raju-Newman's equation. The crack depth to length ratio, a/c, was set to 0.2 and 0.4 in the same way and 0.33 was added to extend the range of crack configuration. Finite Element Analyses(FEA) were performed using the commercial FEA program ABAQUS. The results showed that the Raiu-Newman solutions were about 4-10% lower than FEA's using symmetric model of one-eighth of a vessel and close to those of FEA using symmetric model or one-forth or a vessel. Ana VINTIN solutions were nearly equal to those or Raju-Newman.

A 1kW-class horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) rotor blade is taken into account to investigate elastic characteristics in 2-D. The elastic blade field is composed of symmetric cross-ply laminated composite material. Blade element momentum theory is applied to obtain the boundary conditions pressuring the blade, and the plane stress elasticity problem is formulated in terms of two displacement parameters with mixed boundary conditions. For the elastic characteristics a fair of differential equations are derived based on the elastic theory. The domain is divided by triangular and rectangular elements due to the complexity of the blade configuration, and a finite element method is developed for the governing equations to search approximate solutions. The results describe that the elastic behavior is deeply influenced by the layered angle of the middle laminate and the stability of the blade can be improved by controlling the layered angle of laminates, which can be evaluated by the mathematical approach.
