A Study on the Influence of Brand Identity Expressional Elements and Brand Awareness in Cosmetic Road Shop's Facade - Focusing on Designs of Facades of Cosmetic Road Shops in Myeongdong - (화장품 로드 숍 파사드의 브랜드 아이덴티티 표현요소와 브랜드 인지도의 영향관계에 관한 연구 - 명동 지역 화장품 로드 숍의 파사드 디자인을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how brand identity expressional elements in cosmetic road shops' facades would affect the brand awareness of consumers while extracting those brand identity expressional elements observed in the facades of the cosmetic road shops. In order to achieve the research goal, the study used Q methodology, a method to measure subjectivity. The results have been summarized as follows. (1) The elements to express the brand identity found in the facades of the cosmetic road shops were observed to be two-dimensional expressional elements, and they should include a symbol, a logo, a signboard, materials to express an image (products, models) and a brand color. As for the three-dimensional expressional elements, they were a building (form, materials, pattern), decorations (lean-to roof, canopy, sculptures, lighting, screen) and a display window (focusing on products, visuality or the inside of a shop). (2) The findings of the analyses on the brand awareness using Q methodology have been presented as follows. (1) When multiple identity expressional elements which would be associated with each other are used, the brand awareness gets increased relatively efficiently. (2) In case of men, they would perceive a brand more easily through those formative expressional elements such as a form of a building. (3) In case of women, they would perceive a brand more conveniently through those visual expressional elements such as a brand color. (3) In conclusion, the study figured out that, among the brand identity expressional elements, the one which would influence the brand awareness most would be (1) the brand color, followed by (2) the building-form, (3) the lean-to roof, (4) the display window and (5) the logo. Based upon what has been learned so far, the study confirmed that when it comes to securing the brand awareness in the market, cosmetic companies should, first, realize how important it is to make good use of the two-dimensional (visual) expressional element, the brand color, and the three-dimensional expressional element, the form of the building, together before they even try to design facades of their shops on the streets.

A Study of the Characteristics of Skylights and Roof Structures in the Works of Mario Botta (마리오 보타 작품에 나타난 천창과 지붕구조의 특성 연구)

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the skylights and roof structures designed by Marie Botta from the viewpoint of the space, the form and the light source, and thus to find out their characteristics. For this purpose, his 13 major works were selected and analyzed according to the principle of design, which could explain the characteristics of skylight and roof structures sufficiently. Trough this study, the followings are realized. 1) The skylights are the main light source in the interiors of his buildings that are comparatively dark, being enclosed by thick materials such as bricks. The roof structures have been precisely designed to disperse the light effectively 2) The skylight and roof structures play the role of form-creating elements in his buildings. They create the unique images for the exteriors and endow form to the interiors. 3) The skylight also serves as a window to communicate with nature outside. Through the skylight, people in his buildings are able to perceive the flow of time and enjoy the scenery of the sky. 4) The light that showers through the skylight and adjusted by roof structures produces special atmosphere in his projects. In his interiors, people can experience a somewhat miraculous and sacred feeling with the light from above. 5) The skylight has meaning as a symbol. It symbolize the relationship between the earth and the sky. Also, in religious projects, a skylight provides a symbolic vision of Heaven for Christians. Comparing with recent works presented in our country, which emphasize simple interiors using artificial light, Botta's works suggest another form of design differentiated from the works of our designers in that Botta's works not only take advantage of natural light by using skylights and roof structures but also utilize them as form-creating elements.

  • Woman in Choson era had various kind of accdssories like rings, ear ring, ornamentak hairpins and so on. Among them their favorite was the Norigae, the pendent trinket. With the embroidered ornament at its center, beads and knots were attached to the upper and lower part, and it was hung with a tassel. It was carried on the string of the Chogori. norigae oreginated in waist string of Three Countries era(Sills, Paekje and Koguryo) ; had been changed with the development of fashion, embroidery and the influence of Buddhistic culture. The differences between Embroidered Norigae and Norigae are following. If the ornament at its center is made of such jewels as gold, silver, jade and the like, it is called Norigae. But if the ornament at its center is made of the embroidered Norigae. Such a Embroidered Norigae in which perfume was contained, was as a perfume box or a perfume bag and was carried on the strings of Chogori by Danjak(single work). The Differences between ancient Embroidered Norigae of late Choson era and modern Embroidered Norigae are Following; 1) The type of main body-the embroidered ornament at its center was mainly embroidered with the shape of animals in both of ancient Embroidered Norigae was usually formes like a bat and that of modern Embroidered Norigae like butterfly. 2) plants were adapted as the main design of ancient Embroidered Norigae, but plants and animals as that of modern Embroidered Norigae. 3) The colors of the background and the design are usually red in both ancient and modern Embroidered norigae. 4) The tassels of ancient Embroidered Norigae were mode in the shape of srick and a strawberry. but the tassels of modern Embroidered Norigae were mainly made in the shape of a stick. 5) Nowadays the beauty of external form is considered more important while the symbol of main body was considered more important in Choson era. 6) The role of Thidon in the composition of Embroidered Norigae is declined and a lot of main bodies are used in modern Embroidered Norigae. 7) Modern Korean people are apt to choose Embroidered Norigae depending upon the design of main body and the traditional Korean beauty. 8) Modern people who desire to get new thing, try to make the design of main body various.   • In the middle of economic and mental riches in the 21st century, the importance of well being and the pursuit of happiness are emerging as the new trend. Thus the lifestyle that values comfortable and practical naturalness and intrinsic merits has come to influence the human life rather than the old showing-off and formal desire. In addition to this, the spread of the five day week has given more leisure time, which has led to the increasing interest in health and leisure. The interest in sports has skyrocketed since the successful holding of the 2002 Korea and Japan World Cup event. All these changes to the lifestyle have contributed to the fusion of luxury wear and sports wear. As the result of the consumers in the 21st century having more classified and upgraded way of living thanks to the settlement of the above-mentioned lifestyle and the enlargement of the leisure sports culture, there has appeared the wellness kin, who value the importance of life and the nature and believe in the idea that they can reconstruct the environment in the way they can enjoy their lifestyle and pursue happiness. They favor healthy fashion items and think much of exercise, nutrition, and rest. They pursue the natural and comfortable style, whose ideas came from simple exercises such as health training and yoga and the easy and comfortable look observed at resorts. Their fashion style can be divided into three of fitness fashion, yoga fashion and resort fashion. First, the boxer fashion is characterized by the relaxing design and practicality. The major items of the fashion include running shirt-styled upper clothes, training pants, hooded shirts and sneakers. Simple and comfortable look should be induced from the combination of the items. Second, the yoga fashion was motivated by the comfortable yoga wear. It advocates stress-free spirit and comfortable and stable naturalism. Along with the advantages of the good feeling to wear and the functionality to help exercise better, the yoga fashion gives the wearer enough room to move around in, using the unique lines. Third, the resort wear refers to the kinds of clothes you tend to wear at the beach and the park. There are various kinds of the resort look; bathing suits, the beach wear you can wear with the bathing suit, the resort evening wear, the full-side look that you try on top of the bathing suit and is made of the same material of the bathing suit, and the marine look, the symbol of the summer. In short, the study attempted to investigate many trends occurring as the result of human recent increasing interest and concern in the quality of life, and the impacts of them on the fashion world. This kind of research that examines the background of the times and society will help to grasp with the fashion trends of the present and the future. And more studies should be conducted on the development of new and original design in clothes fashion, which reflects the characteristics identified in this kind of research.

  • Character conveys rich storytelling and various design elements. Domestic characters are changing and developing in various forms through SNS and offline sources, which are being developed in the aspect of contents industry. The purpose of this study is to find out and discuss the factors that character users are using Korean characters as storytelling and color factor. In terms of storytelling, they prefer adventure, fantasy, absurd and humorous stories. In terms of color, it seems that they prefer a character with simple and simple color/ warm color and warm / cute color composition. On the other hand, characters with a simple story, which is the main subject of early childhood education, fashion, or toys in the aspect of storytelling, are not preferred. In terms of color, it was shown that 4 or more colors were combined without a main color. These main colorless characters gave complex feelings that are not preferred. In terms of storytelling, it is necessary to develop and develop the contents of OSMU(One-source Multi use) through story development with adventure and fantasy structure. In terms of color, it is necessary to configure the user with a simple and simple color which is preferred by the users. Also, the assembly robot toy character needs to increase the satisfaction of the character through simple color composition. As a result of this study, the factors that satisfy the users in terms of storytelling and color are derived. These results will contribute to the development of theoretical aspects, storytelling aspects, and character design industry aspects. Despite the significance of the above paper, it was inevitable to limit the research on the analysis of the storytelling of specific characters, the research through the color analysis framework, the accurate data analysis on the color analysis, and the simple comparative analysis of one.

  • Humans desire the achievement a of sense of unity between themselves and place to create an identity of place as a realization of his or her sense of belonging. Humans develop ideas from their culture and environment to be expressed physically within the landscape through symbols. Symbols are formed within a place through the structure of the space and, more visually, through the details. The purpose of this paper is to examine the structure of space and the details of 'the Courtyard of the lions' in the Alhambra and to study how the details influence the formation of the identity of place. This paper also compares the structure and details in terms of the meaning of symbols, design languages, cultural, social and historical background and the experience of the place. The structure of the space in 'the Courtyard of the Lions' represents Paradise in the Islamic religion a common theme in the composition of traditional Islamic gardens. The design languages expressed within the structure are order, balance, accent and enclosure; the inherit meanings of the structure are religion, the natural environment and way of life. The details tell of the ideology of Paradise, royalty, nature, and praise of God, while their design languages include physical and visual continuity, accent, variation, the feeling of movement, rhythm, and depth perception. The details also express the historical background of the Dynasty of Nasrid and the style of Mudejar. The name 'the Courtyard of the Lions' was taken from the detail of the lim figures, details within the landscape which are important in building an identity of place. This study demonstrates that the details at 'the Courtyard of the lions' achieved a sense of unity between man and place. In conclusion, details have immense influence in building of the identity of place.

Development and Applications of Secondary School After-School Programs Using Korean Traditional Elements: Focusing on Gift Wrapping Designs (전통적 요소를 활용한 중·고등학교 방과후 프로그램 개발 및 적용: 포장디자인 내용을 중심으로)

  • In order for young people to be interested in tradition, a specialized experience program that can be frequently encountered is needed. We have developed an after-school traditional gift-wrapping design program in relation to the subject of home economics for the purpose of enabling students to become interested in tradition and deepen their traditional knowledge. The research process was comprised of analysis, development, and evaluation. We analyzed the home economics curriculum, authentic designs from blogs and department stores along with books published by gift-wrapping associations, and interviews with three gift wrapping specialists. Contemporary traditional packaging design is not limited to the reproduction of the traditional design but also creates designs that strongly express unique Korean identity using traditional symbol patterns, colors, traditional decorations, and small items along with modern materials. A 16-week after-school program was developed based on the analysis results. After the implementation of the after-school program in a middle school, survey results showed students who were indifferent toward tradition showed interest and acquired a positive image towards tradition.

The Understanding for Acceptance of Kitsch and Vernacular concepts in Product Design (키치와 버내큘러 개념의 제품디자인 수용을 위한 이해)

  • This study analysis if the concepts of kitsch and vernacular remains as cultural elements for product design. Because their function and aesthetic value have vivid possibilities for general product design fields. For the purpose, this study limits its range within post modernism, kitsch, and vernacular, and analyzes their relationships. Against functionalism, post modernism had cultural pluralisms to approach into popular styles, and some of them was amusing design. That post modernism designs stimulated human beings' emotion by decorations or some symbolic forms from specific objects is similar to the symbolism, regionalism, or pluralism of kitsch or vernacular. Kitsch is a free style that is not limited in any specific trends. It is a Meta culture that has influenced into various fields including design, so kitsch does not have a parallel position with a product or design. In product design, kitsch is the behavior and result of imitating existing objects' images. It could have amusement according to which objects are imitated. So if human beings feel amusement by kitsch, it could be same as the direction of post modernism. Kitsch is determined by design atmospheres. They cannot be specified abjectly, and can be different according to people. With symbolism and regionalism, kitsch and vernacular appeared according to people's needs. While kitsch is consumer's tastes-oriented, vernacular is cultural tradition-oriented. Kitsch has symbolism that specifies products' functions or design concepts, and it is a communication method between human being and products. Because vernacular is province-oriented, it has a lot of styles according to regional living environments and cultural differences. So vernacular design reflects continued traditional lifestyles. By restorative memory, regionalism, cultural pluralism, amusement, and symbolism, kitsch and vernacular could be understood the sub or parallel concepts of post modernism. They might be easily miss-understood mixed concepts that have western and national characters. But in kitsch and vernacular concept, modernizing pas by using the pluralism of post modernism should be considered positive. So, the range of the further study is also supposed to be focused on more widened fields to, to establish cultural identification in design.

A Study for Renaming of Paekje's Designed Tiles -Centering Around the Ghost Image Design Excavated at Oe-ri Kyuam-myun, Buyeo- (백제 문양전의 개명(改名)을 위한 연구 -부여 규암면 외리 출토 '귀형문(鬼形文)'을 중심으로-)

  • We Koreans are very proud of this nation's cultural history over some five millenniums. But most of the relics found in the nation date back up to two thousand years. Under this circumstance, we are wondering the gap and missing of three thousand years. In our traditional literature of history, [Chiwoo] was a military god of supreme dignity and virtue. He was a symbol of brave and strong warriors and since the antiquity, he has been kept alive deeply in the mind of the Korean race. Considering findings through this study, the researcher could provide a conclusion as described below. 1) The name of Paekje's designed tiles was initially made by a Japanese scholar who had first found the antique relic. According to studies by a few of Korean researchers, the name is usually called despite its relation with a historical background of the excavated objects has not been fully studied. 2) After the patterned objects of the Korean antique Kingdom, Japanese researchers reported that [Chiwoo] was a military god as exorcist and probably represented something in the form of a ghost, although there were arguments that the military god was the very being to influence the image of the ghost. This report suggests that the Japanese community didn't downgrade the military god onto the level of a ghost. 3) One of our antique nations, Paekje at that time sought to determine the origin and culture of the Koreans by making multiple exchange relations with China, and probably accepting cultures of the Chinese Han nation and those of the Chinese South and North Dynasty period. Based on findings from a relevant literature, [Sulyigi], people of Paekje attempted to show express the image of Chiwoo in their own unique ways and then deliver the strong bravery of [Chiwoo] to us, or their descendents. This can explain that those findings as above mentioned are consistent with the designed tiles of Paekje, and that the tiles should not be named as the design of ghost. 4) The designed tiles involved elements of Taoism and Buddhism and substantially considered the spirit of four gods which was mobilized for the tomb construction and selection at that time. But this should never be a reason why all of the horned figures seen in tomb wall paintings are collectively treated as ghosts. 5) From the view of historic literature, we can no doubt say that the Heavenly Emperor [Chiwoo] was our ancestor. It is not better to say that the relic stuffs as excavated should be referred to the design of ghost image only in that they have yet to be associated historically with other relics. This claim would be newly changed as it becomes clear with historical remains that our antique ancestors kept doing positive activities along the coast of the antique kingdom, Balhae.

A study on the Relationship of Korean Film Costumes and Popular Fashion - Focused on the Retro Phenomenon Since the 1998 - (한국영화의상(韓國映畵衣裳)과 대중(大衆)패션의 연관성(聯關性)에 관(關)한 고찰(考察) -1998년(年) 이후(以後) Retro 현상(現狀)을 중심(中心)으로-)

  • This study examines the meaning of retro phenomenon and its background of establishment that showed in the pop culture. And it finds out the retro phenomena in the domestic fashion trends. And it defines the characteristics of dress and its ornament in the retro phenomena that have shown in the Korean movies since 1998. By doing this, it examines the relationship between movie dress and street fashion while it compares the styles in the 50s 70s with the retro fashion that is currently emerging. The results of the study are as follows. First, the hippie look in the 60s represented a distinctive characteristic of how they rejected traditional lifestyles. Hippie's romantic femininity that showed in the movie of 'Oollala Sisters' received a spotlight as a necessary style in the modern fashion trend. Second, while the funk look in the 70s was a style of disorder and disgust, the movie gives it a possibility of fashion with a converted sense as a vanguard fashion while embracing the funk look. Third, the layered look in the 70s was expressed with layered items, while the current layered look emphasizes layered textiles as shown in the movie of 'Hae-Jeok Became The Disco King'. Fourth, the feminine look which was a symbol of restraint shows a mixed style with delicate feminine items as shown in the movies, 'The Harmonium In My Memory' and 'Ditto'. Fifth, the training look that has two stripes as shown in the movie 'the Friends' is considered as casual wear, which is functional and easy to move at the end of the 20th century. Finally, the romantic images of school look, as shown in the movies 'the Friends' and 'Hae-Jeok Became The Disco King', show a renewed mixed & unique style. This study has its significance in the sense that it verifies the fact that the movie dress does not show the characteristics of the works that momentarily passes the screen, but it becomes a foundation of the future fashion design. At this time that Korean movies are highly developing, a through study on the movie fashion will not only give a direction of future in the modern fashion, but it will also give a developing momentum in the Korean movie dress.
