On vowel and syllable duration related to prosodic structure in Korean (한국어 운율구조와 관련한 모음 및 음절 길이)

  • This study aims at examining the relationship between tonal events and their related vowel and syllable duration in Korean. Two things were investigated: one is to see if there is a hierarchical relationship in prosodic unit-final-lengthening and the other is to see if accentual phrase initial high tone syllable gets lengthened. Generally, higher prosodic units show larger degree of lengthening of the final vowel and also final syllable duration than the lower ones except for accentual phrase: Mean duration of utterance-final or intonational-phrase-final syllable(and its vowels) was longer than that of accentual-phrase-final or word-final syllable(and its vowels). However, mean duration of accentual phrase final syllable was shorter than that of word final syllable. Mean vowel duration of accentual phrase initial high tone syllable was shorter than that of any other prosodic unit. Its mean syllable duration, however, was longer than that of accentual-phrase-final or word-final syllable, indicating that strong consonants(fortis and aspirated) frequently appear in the accentual phrase initial position and this position is a prosodically strong position showing longer duration as well as high tone.

A Production-Based Study of English Syllables with Weak-Strong Pattern in the Case of Korean Leaners with Low English Proficiency (초급 영어 학습자의 약강구조 영어 단어에서의 강약음절 산출)

  • In this study, realization of strong and weak syllables in English by Korean leaners with low English proficiency was examined through experiment. The aspects of three acoustic characteristics-duration, pitch, amplitude-were measured and compared with native speakers of English. It was assumed that production of duration, pitch and amplitude of strong and weak syllable by Korean learners would be different from that of English native speakers. According to the production experiments, English native speakers produced strong syllable longer, higher and louder than weak syllable. However, Korean leaners produced strong syllable higher and louder than weak syllable, but not longer enough. Specifically, weak syllable by Korean leaners was longer and strong syllable shorter than native speakers. Furthermore, the difference in duration of syllables between Korean leaners and English native speakers is more significant than pitch and amplitude. As a result, the duration was more important cue for the realization of stress than pitch and amplitude. However, Korean leaners did not produce duration of stressed syllables as English native speakers did, even though they produce the pitch and amplitude of stressed syllable in a similar way to native speakers. The reasons for those were considered, too.

The Effects of the Speaking Rate on the Duration of Syllable before Boundary (발화속도가 경계앞 음절 길이에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the speaking rate on the duration of syllable before boundary. The materials used were four types of syllable-boundary sequences(Go-'Ga' Boundary-Gu) in a paragraph. The duration of 'Ga' syllables before 4 level of boundary was measured, and all of the measurements were taken from signals and spectrograms made by the $Signalyze^{TM}$ 3.04 for Power Mac 7200. Subjects were six female speakers who read the materials at fast, normal, and slow speed five times. The results show that (1) the slower the speaking rate becomes, the longer the duration of syllable before boundary, (2) the duration rank of syllable before each boundary does not correspond to the level of boundary, eg. at fast speed, = < #, + < $ ; at normal speed, +, #, = < $ ; at slow speed, + < =, #, $, and (3) the syllable before sentence boundary is less influenced than syllable before another boundary.

VOT and Its Effect on the Syllable Duration in Busan Korean

  • Two identical experiments are conducted at a six month interval in order to examine the VOT and its effect on the whole syllable duration or the rest portion of the syllable in Busan Korean. Just like the general characteristics of VOT, the aspirated stops consistently exhibit the longest VOT while tense stops have the shortest VOT. However, alveolar stops exhibit shorter VOT than labial stops, and it is contrary to the previous studies which claim that VOT values of labial stops are shorter than VOT values of alveolar stops. Moreover, there is a relationship between VOT and syllable/VC duration across stops. While VOT and syllable/VC duration have symmetric relationship for the aspirated velar and bilabial stops, other lax and tense stops exhibit the inverse relationship between the VOT and syllable/VC duration.

Influences of Inter-syllable Pause Duration on Speech Discrimination Score in Children with Cochlear Implantation (음절 간 쉼 간격이 인공와우 아동의 어음이해도에 미치는 영향)

  • The aims of this study was to investigate influences of speech discrimination score(SDS) depending on inter-syllable pause duration in participant with child of cochlear implantation(CI). 12 child of CI-user participated. The word for SDS was used self-made meaningless three-syllable. The pause duration of inter-syllable was adjusted to 250, 500, 1,000 millisecond(ms). Discrimination score of closed-set speech was obtained at most comfortable loudness(MCL). SDS were improved in CI group for 62.08, 63.75, 69.58 %, but there were no significant changes in child of CI group(p = .4635). SDS was improved depending on inter-syllable pause duration in child of CI.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide preliminary data on the acoustical differences of one syllable words spoken by speakers with different language backgrounds. 20 native speakers of Korean and English were asked to read 7 one-syllable words written in their native language. The phonetic and phonemic characteristics of 7 words were similar between two languages. The ratio of duration of the body (onset+nucleus) and the rhyme(nucleus+coda) relative to the duration of each syllable were calculated using CSL (Computerized Speech Laboratory). The results corresponds to the body-coda structure of the Korean syllable which is supported by the recent experimental psychological studies. More acoustic studies on the Korean syllable structure are required to establish clinical foundation for the phonological awareness and the reading intervention programs.

  • This research reports the prosodic characteristics (including articulation speech rate, pause characteristics, duration) of children with cochlear implants with reference to those of children with normal hearing. Subjects are 8-to 10-year-old children, balancing each number of gender as 24. Dialogue speech data are comprised of four types of sentence patterns. Results show that 1) there's a statistically meaningful difference on articulation speech rate between the two groups. 2) On pauses, they are not observed in exclamatory and declarative sentences in normal children. While imperative sentences show no statistical difference on the number of pauses between the two groups, interrogative sentences do. 3) Declarative, exclamatory, and interrogative sentences reveal statistical difference between the two groups in terms of the sentence's final two-syllable word duration, showing no difference on imperative sentences. 4) When it comes to the RFP (duration ratio of sentence final syllable to penultimate syllable), we no statistically meaningful difference between the two groups in all types of sentences exists. 5) Lastly, RWS (the ratio of sentence final two syllable word duration to that of whole sentence duration) shows statistical difference between two groups in imperative sentences, but not in all the rest types.

An Acoustical Study of English CV Syllables (영어 CV음절의 음향적 특성 고찰)

  • This study examined acoustic characteristics of 900 CV syllables produced by five English native speakers. Those target syllables were produced between the syllable /ba/ twenty times. The syllables were segmented and normalized by the maximum intensity value of each syllable and were divided into consonant or vowel sections by a few visible acoustic criteria. Intensity values were collected at 100 relative time points per syllable. Also, cumulative intensity values and consonant and vowel durations along with the ratio of a consonant to each syllable were measured using Praat scripts. Results showed as follows: Firstly, the consonantal section amounted to a quarter of the syllable in terms of both the cumulative intensity and duration. Secondly, the consonantal ratio by the cumulative intensity was similar to that by the duration. Finally, the sum of the cumulative intensity values in each syllable partially coincided with the consonant order by the current sonority scale. Further studies would be desirable on more reliable acoustical measurements and sophisticated perceptual experiments on the English syllables.

Teaching English Stress Using a Drum: Based on Phonetic Experiments

  • This study focuses on providing the pedagogical implications of stress in English pronunciation teaching since stress is one the most important characteristic factors in English pronunciation (Bolinger, 1976; Brown, 1994; Celce-Murcia, Brinton & Goodwin, 1996; Kreidler, 1989). The author investigated stress production regarding in terms of duration, pitch, and intensity by a group of native speakers of English and a group of low-proficiency South Kyungsang Korean college students for their pre-test. For both of the pre- and post-test, the same stimuli, which consisted of a one-syllable word, two two-syllable words, three three-syllable words, and three four-syllable words, were used along with the various sentence positions: isolation, initial, medial, and final. Soft ware programs, ALVIN and Praat, were used to record and analyze the data. Since Celce-Murcia et al. (1996), Klatt (1975), and Ladefoged (2001) treat duration of the stressed syllable more significantly than other factors, pitch and intensity, with respect to the listener's point of view, the author developed a special method of teaching English stress using a traditional Korean drum to emphasize duration. In addition, the results from the native speakers' production showed that their main strategy to realize stress was through lengthening stressed syllables. After six weeks of stress instruction using the drum, the production of the native speakers and the SK Korean participants from the pre- and post-test were compared. The results from the post-test indicated that the participants showed great improvement not only in duration but also in pitch after the stress instruction. Pitch improvement was unexpected but well-explained by the statement that long vowels receive accent in loan word adaptation in North Kyungsang Korean. The results also showed that the Korean participants' pitch values became more even in their duration values for each syllable as the structure of the word or the sentence became more complex, due to their dependency upon their L1.

  • This thesis compares the duration aspect of the Daegu tongue with that of standard Korean. In the former study on the rhythm of standard Korean, one of the purposes of the study was to compare it with dialects. This thesis is the first attempt to do that. For this purpose, this thesis proceeds as follows. After Introduction, Chapter 2 surveys the former study. Chapter 3 deals with the materials, method and results of the experiment. Chapter 4 analyzes and interprets the results of the experiment, In Conclusion, the most Prominent fact is that the results of the experiment fall short of Daegu tongue speakers' expectations. The Daegu tongue is generally considered as a 'tone language.' And as Daegu tongue speakers sensitively recognize pitch, they think that they quickly say the syllables between the Pitch stressed syllables, whereas standard Korean speakers say those syllables relatively slowly, But in this experiment, which deals with only duration ignoring Pitch, their assumption is proved to be false.
