병원 등급에 따른 X선조사야와 광조사야 간의 면적 및 중심점 오차 비교 (Comparison of Center Error or X-ray Field and Light Field Size of Diagnostic Digital X-ray Unit according to the Hospital Grade)

  • 본 연구에서는 병원 등급에 따른 X선조사야와 광조사야 간의 면적 차이와 중심점 오차를 측정하여 비교함으로써 피폭을 낮추고 화질 향상을 위해 정도관리의 중요성을 인식하고자 하였다. 00광역시에 소재한 10개 병원의 디지털 일반촬영장치 12대를 대상으로 X선조사야와 광조사야의 중심점을 측정하였다. 병원 등급별로는 대학병원(university hospital) 3대, 종합병원(general hospital) 3대, 병원(hospital) 4대, 의원(clinic)에서 2대를 실시하였다. 표준화된 모눈종이 위에 투명 플라스틱판을 붙인 후 철사(0.8mm)를 이용하여 각각 다른 넓이로 팬텀을 제작하였고, 팬텀 중앙에 철사로 중심을 표시하였다. 디지털 일반촬영장치 테이블 위에 팬텀을 위치시킨 후 수직으로 각 조사야 별로 노출 시킨 후 영상을 얻었다. 모든 영상은 SSD 100cm에서 동일한 노출 조건으로 획득하였고, 의료영상저장전송시스템(PACS, picture archiving communication system)을 이용하여 조사야 및 오차 길이를 측정하고 비교하였다. 측정 데이터는 평균과 표준오차로 나타낸 후 SPSS ver. 22.0을 이용하여 분석하였다. 의원이 X선조사야와 광조사야 간에 면적차이가 가장 적었고, 그다음 대학병원, 병원, 종합병원이 가장 컸다. 중심점 오차가 가장 적은 대학병원을 기준으로 의원 간에 통계학적인 유의한 중심점 오차 차이를 보였다(p=0.024). 중심점 오차는 36개월 미만 그룹이 36개월 그룹보다 통계학적으로 유의하게 적은 오차를 보였다(0.26 vs. 0.88, p=0.036). X선조사야와 광조사야 간에 면적 차이는 의원이 가장 적었고, 중심점 오차는 대학병원이 가장 적었다. 또한, 정도관리 후 사용기간이 짧은 병원이 중심점 오차가 적은 것으로 나타나 정도관리 항목에 따른 수시정도관리 도입이 필요하였다.

왕침개미에 의한 피부질환 집단 발생에 관한 역학 조사 (Epidemiologic Survey on Outbreak of Dermatosis Associated with Ants, Pachycondyla chinensis)

  • 도시 가스 제조 공장에서 집단적으로 피부질환이 발생하여 1998년 8월 14일과 9월 11일 2차례에 걸쳐 한번이라도 설문조사가 가능하였던 사무직 49명, 생산직 15명, 탱크로리 운전기사 6명 및 경비 3명 총 73명을 조사 대상으로 하여 역학 조사를 시행하였다. 조사 방법은 설문 조사를 실시하고, 피부질환이 있는 근로자의 피부병변을 피부과 전문의가 관찰하였다. 집단 피부질환의 발생 원인이 개미일 것이라는 가설 하에 원인으로 생각하는 개미를 채집하여 종명을 확인하였다. 조사 대상자 73명 중에서 이번 유행과 관련된 피부질환 발생자는 12례로 피부 질환 발병률은 16.4%이었다. 연령별, 교육수준별 및 근무기간별 발병률의 차이는 없었다. 직종별 피부질환의 발병률은 생산직 근로자에서 타직종 근로자보다 유의하게 발병률이 높았다. 피부질환 발생 장소는 10례가 생산동의 조종실이었고, 9례가 개미에게 물린 것을 확인하였다. 원인으로 생각되는 개미를 채집 동정한 결과 왕침개미(Pachycondyla chinensis) 임을 확인하였다. 피부질환 환자군 12명과 비환자군 61명을 비교한 결과 1997년에 동일한 피부질환은 없었다. 가족 중 피부질환자는 환자군에서 1명이 있었으나 유행과는 무관하였고, 피부질환과 알레르기 질환의 과거력도 차이가 없었다. 피부병변은 개미 교상후 홍반이 발생하였고, 주증상으로는 가려움증이 가장 많았다. 3례에서는 전신적인 알레르기 피부병변을 관찰할 수 있었다. 피부질환은 7월 30일부터 8월 12일까지 발생하였고, 유병기간은 5일부터 30일까지이었다. 피부병변의 발생부위는 가슴과 복부가 각각 66.6%, 목과 팔은 각각 33.3%, 어깨와 등은 각각 16.7%이었고 최초 발생부위는 복부가 41.7%, 목이 25.0%, 팔은 16.7%이었다. 치료 방법은 자가 치료가 9례(75.0%), 약국 방문이 1례 (8.3%), 병원 방문이 2례(16.7%)이었다. 이상의 결과에서 이번 집단 피부질환 유행은 왕침개미의 교상에 의하여 발생하였다고 생각한다. 앞으로 본 유행을 일으킨 개미가 이 지역에서 유행하게 된 원인과 개미의 생활사에 대한 연구와 함께 환경개선 및 재발을 막기 위한 예방적 조치가 강구되어야 한다.

일반음식점 신규영업주의 위생관리지식 및 위생행정에 대한 태도 (Knowledge and Attitude toward Restaurant-Related Sanitation of New Restaurateurs)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the sanitation affairs of general restaurants. The questionnaire survey on the attitude and knowledge toward sanitation, the attitude for sanitary administration and the sanitary education was conducted against new 600 restaurateurs who were educated from June 20 to July 11, 1996, at the administration hall's division of Kyungsangbook-do in charge of food industry that offered regular sanitary education to new restaurateurs annually. And the visit survey on sanitary practice was also conducted over 93 restaurateurs who obtained the commercial license for food service business. The findings from the survey were as follows; In regard to food sanitation, some 87.1 to 88.3% got the right knowledge about the reason and precaution of food poisoning, food's frozen or cold-storage, and the disposal of products after expiration of validity term. But it was about 20.8% to 50.0% who knew right about major precaution, storage temperature in refrigerator, fermented milk product's storage temperature and validity term. There was therefore a necessity for education in food sanitation. 38.2% of the subjects placed an emphasis on sanitary storage of foodstuffs as the most important thing in sanitary management. 33.8% emphasized cooking sanitation. The environmental sanitation was counted as the most important thing by 19.2%, and personal sanitation of worker was counted by 8.8%. There was differences in what they thought the most important thing was, according to the respondent's educational level and cooker. 86.6% replied it necessary to improve the sanitary level. The respondents who were younger or had better educational level emphasized more the need for it. Concerning health examination, 90.2% replied it necessary. 81.4% answered the reason was because there was a potentiality Quests might be infected with contagious disease. 78.5% pointed the need for sanitary education, but respondents with higher educational level less emphasized its needs. As the reason for poor sanitation, restaurateur's poor awareness about it was most frequently pointed out, by 46.9%. Cooking sanitation was most frequently counted, by 38.5%, as the first thing to be improved. As the most critical point in sanitary education, 34.5% indicated food's sanitary Quality control 30.9% mentioned sanitary treatment of kitchen facilities and peripheral environment, and 27.1% emphasized the summary of the general food sanitation. 77.7% answered to correct immediately in case of violating the Food Hygiene Law, and 12.0% replied to correct in the same case if they would get the order from public official or administrative action would be taken. Respondents with higher educational level answered more to correct immediately. What they wanted the government office to do toward sanitary improvement was a fund aid an facilities and management which was pointed out by 38.9%, a periodical sanitary education by 26.3% and a on-the-spot guidance of sanitary officials by 22.3%. In view of the food service business's sanitary practice, the rate of wearing a sanitary clothes was 32.9% in city and 35.0% in county. The rate of hand-washing without soap or non-washing at cooking was 73.9%, 85%, respectively. The rate of personnel sanitation was 34.2% in city and 50.0% in county. These things indicated the sanitation was not well practiced. To improve the poor sanitary conditions of the food service businesses, it is recommended to offer institutional backing and financial aid from administrative office, and encourage restaurateurs to take pride in their job. and conduct the sanitary education effectively by sanitary education institution.

서울시내 계층별 아파트 주민의 영양실태조사 (Food & Nutrition Survey of Specific Areas in Seoul Kores)

  • 서울시내 아파트중에서 경제적인 수준을 볼 때 상(上), 중상(中上), 중(中), 하(下)의 계등별 특색이 나타날 수 있는 한강 멘숀아파트, KIST 아파트, 문화촌 아파트, 북아현 시민아파트 주민의 일반적인 식새활 현황및 영양과 식품 섭취 실태 조사결과는 다음과 같다. A. 조사대상자(調査對象者)의 일반환경(一般環境) 세대주의 학력이 제일 높은 KIST 아파트가 한강 멘숀 아파트보다 식생활비는 오히려 적은 펀이었으나 가족영양 및 기타 영양문제를 항상 고려하고 계획성 있는 식생활을 하는 경향이었다. 고기류, 생선류의 섭취 빈도는 한강멘숀, KIST, 문화촌 아파트는 하루에 한번 섭취하는 경우가 많은 것으로 나타났다. 조리할 때 조미료나 식품의 양은 대부분 눈짐작으로 하지만, 계량컵, 제량스픈, 저울을 사용하는 경우는 KIST 아파트가 제일 많은 편이었고 식사할 때 개인접시 및 napkin의 사용은 한강 멘숀과 KIST 아파트에서 많은 편이었다. 먹고 남은 음식은 조금 남은 것은 버리는 경우가 대부분이고 냉장고에 식품을 보관할 때는 대개 뚜껑을 덮거나 싸서 넣는 경우가 많았다. B. 영양섭취실태(營養攝取實態) 1인(人) 1일(日) 열량 섭취량은 한강멘숀, KIST, 문화촌, 시민아파트 순으로 경제적인 생활수준과 거의 비슷한 경향을 보여 주었으나 총열량 섭취량중 탄수화물, 지방, 담백질의 비율은 이상 권장량인 탄수화물 65%, 지방 20%, 만백질 15%에 거의 비슷한 경향으로 나타났다. 대체적으로 단백질, Fe, Vit. A, Niacin의 의섭취량은 권장량 이상을 취하고 있으나 Ca, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Vit. C의 섭취량은 권장량에 미달되는 경향이 있었다. C. 식품섭취실태(食品攝取實態) 1인(人) 1일(日) 섭취하는 식품의 양은 북아현 시민아파트가 가장 많고 한강 멘숀아파트가 가장 적게 나타나 경제적인 생활수준 혹은 총 Calorie 섭취량과는 반대되는 경향을 나타내었다. 식품 총 섭취량에 대한 각 식품군의 섭취 비율을 보면 어느 아파트나 곡류의 섭취율이 $45{\sim}50%$로서 가장 높은 수치를 나타냈다. 그외의 식품군 중에는 한강 멘숀과 KIST 아파트는 육류의 성취율이 가장 높았고 문화촌과 북아현 시민아파트는 김치류의 섭취율이 가장 높았다. 채소류와 과일류의 섭취율은 한강 멘숀과 KIST 아파트가 높은 반면 저류의 섭취율은 한강 멘숀아파트가 가장 낮았다. 단백질 급원으로서 한강멘숀과 KIST 아파트는 주로 육류를, 문화촌 아파트에서는 곡류와 생선류를 그리고 북아현 시민 아파트에서는 주로 두류를 많이 섭취하는것으로 나타났다.

ICNP를 적용한 학교간호현상 및 특성과 초.중.고등학교의 학교간호현상 비교 (Comparison of School Nursing Phenomena at Elementary, Middle and High Schools by Applying ICNP)

  • Purpose : this study purposed to investigate school nursing phenomena in Korea by applying ICNP, the international standard nursing classification system developed by ICN, and to compare school nursing phenomena at elementary, middle and high schools. Method : The subjects of this study are 110 nursing teachers from 82 elementary schools, 16 middle schools, and 12 high schools. In the survey, subjects were asked to score the degree to which phenomena and characteristics of Korean school nursing, identified in previous research, on a 5 point scale. Questionnaires were distributed and recovered by mail and email. The period of data collection was 6 months from July to December 2003. The general characteristics of schools and nursing teachers were represented with frequencies and percentages, the phenomena and characteristics of school nursing with the mean score of the questions, and the phenomena school nursing by school grade with ANOVA and Duncan's posterior analysis. Results : 1) As for the characteristics of schools according to school nursing phenomena related to human behavior, the mean score of questions on inadequate stress management was highest at 3.24 points followed by the score on inadequate weight control (3.23), inadequate eating habits (3.22), the risk of spine disorders (2.68), inadequate emergency management (2.62), inadequate response to sex -related problems (2.19), and smoking and drug use (1.85). 2) As for the characteristics of schools according to school nursing phenomena related to human function, the mean score of questions on oral health management was highest at 3.11 points followed by the score on the risk of digestive system disorder (2.87), improper eyesight management (2.81), the risk of respiratory system disorders (2.75), lack of sexual identity (2.52), and inadequate contagious disease control (2.12). 3) As for the mean score according to school nursing phenomena related to environment, the score of the risk of accidents in classroom was highest as 2.68 points followed by the score of the risk of accidents around the school (2.65), maladjustment to school (2.62), the risk of accidents outside the classroom (2.43), inadequate learning environment (1.83), the risk of exposure to socially and physically harmful environment factors (1.82), and inadequate waste disposal (1.77). 4) This study tested the mean scores of questions corresponding to each school nursing phenomenon in order to see if there is a difference in the school nursing phenomenon among elementary, middle and high schools, and performed Duncan's posterior comparison for school nursing phenomena. A significant difference was found at p<.1. According to the results, school nursing phenomena found to be significantly different among elementary, middle and high schools was smoking and drug use (p<.05), which appeared more problematic in high school than in elementary school. phenomena such as inadequate eating habits, inadequate weight control, inadequate response to sex-related problems and inadequate waste disposal were also found to be statistically different at p<.1; however, according to the result of Duncan's posterior comparison, no difference was found among groups in improper eating habits and improper response to sex-related problems, and a significant difference was found between middle and high schools in inadequate weight control and inadequate waste disposal. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to plan school health projects focused on the characteristic school nursing phenomena that had high scores and to develop and execute school healthe projects in accordance with the characteristics of elementary, middle and high schools. Considering that the scores of school nursing phenomena related to human behavior are high, it is necessary to introduce school health promotion projects in a systematic way.

프랜차이즈 모기업 핵심역량 자원이 가맹점 관계결속과 재계약의도에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Core Competence and Resource Sharing on the Relational Bond among Franchisees and on Re-contract Intention in the Franchising Parent Companies)

  • Purpose - The domestic franchise industry has made significant contributions to industry such as investment, employment, and community economy development, facilitating growth potential. The franchise industry provides management knowhow transfer between parent companies and franchisees as per contracts addressing use of business signs, franchisees' independent position, franchisor support, and royalties to be paid to the franchisors. However, many franchisors lack management knowhow and provide insufficient support because of poor control of franchisees and not having a systematic approach to support. This results in dissatisfied franchisees and failure to establish long-term relationships. Few studies have examined relational commitment and/or re-contract intention by support resources between franchisors and franchisees, despite a considerable output of theories and studies of the growth of the franchise industry. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to examine the effects of the ability to provide resources on relational commitments and re-contract intention, and to suggest causal relationships and implications. Research design, data, and methodology - The subject was domestic franchisors registered with the Association of Franchise with more than 50 franchisees. Franchisees under contract for 2 years and considering re-contract of their franchise 2 years later were used. The subjects totaled 300 franchisees in Seoul. A questionnaire survey was used to investigate the subject of franchisees' concessions during the 10 days from November 21, 2013 to November 30, 2013. After excluding 16 surveys with poor answers, 284 responses were finally used. Four areas and 44 questions were used. A nominal scale was used for four common characteristics questions including gender, ages, educational background, and franchise managing time. Questions regarding ability, relational commitment, and re-contract intention made use of a Likert 5-point scale. Data coding and data cleaning were used. SPSS 18.0 was used as follows. First, frequency analysis was done to investigate demographic characteristics. Second, exploratory factor analysis was done to verify validity of testing tools, and Cronbach's α coefficient was used to verify reliability. Third, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were done. An exploratory factor analysis was done to verify validity of concepts. A correlation analysis was done to test relationships between the variables, and multiple regression analysis was done to verify franchisor's ability, franchisees' relational commitment, and re-contract intention. Results - The following were the outcomes. First, store operation management, finance operation management, and human resource management affected the calculated bond. Second, store operation management and finance operation management affected the emotional bond. Third, store operation management, finance operation management, human resource management, and marketing management affected the prescriptive bond. Fourth, calculated bond and prescriptive bond had an effect on re-contract intention. Conclusions - As stated above, in franchise management, parent companies' offer and instruction of core competence to their franchisees as an information resource could improve the relational bond by helping them grow together through the resource sharing. Consequently, core competence factors were promoting factors that could improve franchisees' re-contract intention for a long time.

세대간의 웰빙인식정도와 웰빙관련 실천행동의 비교 (Comparison of Awareness and Practice on Well-being Life and Related Behaviors According to Generations)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness and practice on well-being life and well-being related behaviors, and the various factors affecting well-being related behaviors such as purchasing food materials, food habits, eating out and daily routine activities. A survey was conducted by questionnaire and on a 5-point Likert scale. The subjects of this study were composed of 221 students and their 102 parents who were over 40 years residing in the Ulsan area. The results of this study are summarized as follows: Almost half of the subjects (47.4%) responded that they have good health conditions; to keep a good health condition, 41.2% of the subjects were exercising regularly and 20.4% of them kept diet control. In regard to the meaning of well-being, 66.6% of the subjects thought it is the lifestyle for physical and mental richness (children: 70.6%, parents: 57.8%). 30.3% of the subjects answered that the most important part of well-being was food related. The importance order was mental richness, food related things, physical health for children, and for the parents, it was food related things, physical health, mental richness. Most of population (45.8%) answered that they have a willingness for the pursuit of a well-being life. Among the well-being related behaviors, 69.7% of subjects have purchased items (children: 61.5%, parents: 87.3%). 37.2% of the subjects have acquired information from TV. The average well-being practice score was $61.01{\pm}10.36$. Children's scores were significantly lower than the parent's scores (p < 0.001). And the average practice score of 'purchasing food materials,' 'eating out,' 'food habits,' 'daily routine activities' were $15.3{\pm}3.3,\;15.5{\pm}3.1,\;16.8{\pm}3.3$ and $13.4{\pm}3.5$, respectively. Among five types of purchasing food materials, 'purchasing domestic agricultural food' was greatest ($3.64{\pm}0.91$) and 'purchasing of organic or low agricultural chemical food products' was lowest ($3.15{\pm}0.91$). In regard to food habits, 'eating rice and bread made of mixed grains' was greatest ($3.46{\pm}1.12$) and 'eating uncooked food or zen food' was lowest ($2.46{\pm}0.99$). The practice scores were significantly affected by gender (p < 0.05), monthly income (p < 0.01), educational level (p < 0.01), presence of disease (p < 0.05), subjective health condition (p < 0.05), well-being awareness (p < 0.001) and concern with well-being (p < 0.001). Well-being awareness scores and well-being practice scores are related positively. Therefore various programs in well-being education should be necessary in order to boost the authentic perceptions of well-being and well-being oriented behaviors in any socioeconomic situation, such as different generations; industrial companies producing well-being goods for consumer's needs and satisfaction; and government and local community create various conditions for well-being oriented behavior.

재가노인의 좋은 죽음에 대한 인지도와 가족지지의 영향 (Factors Influencing Perception of Good Death among the Community-dwelling Elderly)

  • 목적: 노년기는 죽음이 가까워지는 시기이고 노인들은 좋은 죽음을 원하지만 아직까지 노인에서 좋은 죽음의 정도와 영향요인을 규명하는 연구 자료가 부족하다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 재가노인을 대상으로 좋은 죽음의 인지도를 알아보고 그의 영향요인을 일반적 특성과 가족지지를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 방법: 대상자는 서울시, 경기도, 강원도 및 전라도의 지역사회 거주 노인들 중 편의 표출하여 연구에 참여를 서면 동의한 65세 이상의 노인 317명이었다. 구조화된 설문지 문항에는 일반적 특성, 좋은 죽음 19문항과 가족지지 11문항을 포함시켰으며 설문내용에 대해 대상자 스스로 기입하거나 자기기입이 어려운 노인은 연구자나 연구보조원이 설문에 대한 노인의 응답을 기입하는 방법으로 자료수집을 하였다. 자료분석은 기술통계, t 혹은 F 검정, 피어슨 상관계수 및 단계적 다중회귀 분석을 이용하였다. 결과: 좋은 죽음의 정도는 상으로 높은 편이었고 좋은 죽음의 요인 중 통제감이 가장 높았으며 문항별 정도는 '평화롭게 죽는 것이다'와 '죽음을 수용하는 것이다'에 이어서 '다른 사람에게 부담(폐)을 주지 않는 것이다'를 높게 인지하였다. 좋은 죽음의 인지도는 성별, 결혼상태와 경제상태에 따라 유의한 차이가 있었고 가족지지와 유의한 정적 상관관계를 보였다. 좋은 죽음에 대한 영향요인은 가족지지와 성별로 그 설명력은 10.2%이었다. 결론: 재가노인의 좋은 죽음을 위해서는 그들의 일반적 특성 중 성별, 결혼상태와 경제상태를 고려하고 중재가 가능한 가족 지지를 높여야 할 것이다. 또한 노인의 통제감을 높일 수 있는 방안을 모색하고 문항 중 높은 인지도를 나타낸 평화로운 죽음과 죽음 수용 등에 대해 초점을 맞추어 중재를 하여야 할 것이다. 나아가 본 연구결과를 기반으로 노인의 성별과 가족지지를 고려하여 그들의 좋은 죽음뿐 아니라 삶의 질이 유지, 증진될 수 있도록 지지 프로그램이나 정책 제안 등 합당한 노력을 강구하여야 할 것이다.

학교도서관 이용동기가 도서관 서비스품질인식에 미치는 영향: 자기결정성 이론(self-determination theory) 기반 연구 (The Influence of School Library Use Motivation on the Library Service Quality Perception: A Study Based on Self-Determination Theory)

  • 최근 자기주도적 학습, 평생교육이 강조되면서 교육과정에서 학교도서관의 중요성이 부각됨에 따라 학교도서관의 구조적, 제도적, 운영적 관점에서의 연구들이 주로 이루어지고 있다. 그러나 학교도서관이 자율성 기반의 자기주도적 교육 운영에 핵심적인 역할을 수행한다는 점을 고려하면 학교도서관 이용자의 자율적 내적동기와 같은 미시적인 주제에 대한 고찰이 필요하다. 이에 본 연구는 자기결정성 이론을 기반으로 학교도서관 이용 동기에는 어떠한 유형이 더 중요한지, 학교도서관 이용 동기가 서비스 품질에 미치는 영향은 어떠한지에 대해 고찰하였다. 또한 학교도서관 이용 동기와 서비스 품질 인식이 도서관 이용자의 학년에 따라 어떻게 달라지는가에 대해서도 알아보았다. 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 통한 예비 연구를 기반으로 서울에 소재한 4개의 고등학교와 2개의 중학교 학생 588명을 대상으로 학교도서관 이용 동기가 도서관 서비스 품질 인식에 미치는 영향에 대해 설문조사를 실시하였다. 서비스 품질, 그리고 서비스 품질 요소 중 서비스 감성, 정보제어, 도서관 장소를 종속 변수로 각각 설정하였을 때, 네 가지 경우 모두 내재적 동기요인이 외재적 동기요인보다 더 많은 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 중학생과 고등학생 집단을 각각 별도의 대상으로 설정하였을 때에도 두 집단 모두 내재적 동기가 높을수록 서비스 품질을 더 높게 인식하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 자기결정성 이론을 학교도서관 서비스에 적용하였다는 점, 이론을 토대로 구분한 동기 유형의 영향력을 측정하였다는 점, 그리고 학교도서관 서비스 향상을 위해 미시적 요인에 초점을 맞추었다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.

Quality of Life for Patients with Esophageal/Gastric Cardia Precursor Lesions or Cancer: A One-year Prospective Study

  • Background: The current study examined health-related quality of life (QoL) for patients with esophageal/gastric cardia precursor lesions or cancer before and after treatment to facilitate improved prevention and treatment. Materials and Methods: Patients with different stages of esophageal/gastric cardia lesions completed two QoL questionnaires, EORTC QLQ-C30 and supplemental QLQ-OES 18, before primary treatment, and at 1, 6 and 12 months after treatment. Results: Fifty-nine patients with precursor lesions, 57 with early stage cancer, and 43 with advanced cancer responded to our survey. Patients with precursor lesions or early stage cancer reported better QoL overall than those with advanced cancer before treatment (p<0.01). Global QoL scores before treatment and at 1 month after treatment were $71{\pm}9$ versus $69{\pm}9$ (p>0.01), $71{\pm}8$ versus $61{\pm}11$ (p<0.01), $67{\pm}11$ versus $62{\pm}9$ (p<0.01) for three stages of lesions. At 6 months after treatment, some QoL measures recovered gradually in precursor lesion and early cancer patients, while some continuously deteriorated in advanced cancer patients. At 12 months, all QoL scores were comparable to baseline for patients with precursor lesions (p>0.01), while global QoL, social, pain, and insomnia scores for early stage and advanced cancer were inferior to corresponding baseline levels (difference between means>5, p<0.01). At this time point, compared with patients with early stage cancer, those with advanced cancer showed worse QoL with all function and most symptom measures (p<0.01). Conclusions: Patients with precursor lesions or early stage esophageal/gastric cardia cancer show better QoL than those with advanced cancer. This indicates that screening, early diagnosis and treatment may improve the QoL for esophageal/gastric cardia cancer patients. Target intervention and counseling should be given by health care providers during treatment and follow-up to facilitate QoL improvement.
