Purpose: This study is to assess the level of student perceptions, academic achievement, satisfaction, and their relationships in a medical-surgical nursing course using team-based learning (TBL). Method: Four-hour TBL sessions were given in a structured three-phase sequence in a cohort of 261 second year nursing students. Results: Mean perceptions of TBL was $6.64{\pm}5.11$, and $8.30{\pm}4.11$ for perceptions of teamwork. On a 7-point scale, the mean satisfaction score was $4.85{\pm}1.41$, and 64.0% of nursing students were satisfied with TBL compared to lecture. Group readiness assurance test score was significantly higher than individual readiness assurance test score (t=-16.76, p<.001). Perceptions of TBL (F=1.40, p=.245), perceptions of team work (F=1.55, p=.202) and satisfaction (F=0.81, p=.489) was not different by the level of students' academic achievement on items related TBL. Conclusion: Results indicates that TBL was an effective instructional strategy including favorable perceptions and satisfaction for nursing students. TBL could be an adjunct educational strategy for undergraduate nursing education.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop Web-based multimedia contents for supporting student nurses' clinical practice on critical care, and to evaluate learners' responses. Methods: Based on the steps of Assessment, Design, Development, Implementation, & Evaluation(ADDIE) model, a total of 13 self-directed learning modules including live lectures and real video clips were developed through faculty collaboration of nine nursing colleges in Gwangju and Chonnam province. The finally developed multimedia contents were published on the Web of the learning management system at a local e-learning center. Results: The Web contents were evaluated after self-learning by 81 junior college nursing students who were encouraged to study it at their own pace during their two-week clinical practice at a medical or surgical intensive care unit of a university hospital and two hospitals. The knowledge (t = -27.66, p < .001) and self-evaluated clinical performance level(t = 7.54, p < .001) were significantly increased after learning of the Web contents and clinical practice, and satisfaction level that measured post-test only was 4.0 out of 5 point. Conclusion: The use of Web contents for critical care need to be extended as a complimentary material in a class room lecture or clinical practice of students to increase their self-learning ability and understandings of clinical knowledge and situation.

But particularly sexuality have been little viewed in health management of elderly people. This is considered that there is bring on complex issues of mental-social, social. cultural, psychological, physical situation with negligence of sexuality on elderly-selves. This research was attempted to provide as basic data for east-west nursing intervention of elderly sexuality through literature view about east-west nursing view and management on elderly sexuality that we attend yet. Conclusively, oriental nursing management, for sexual management of elderly people, is ; 1. Decrease coitus times as physical conditions. 2. If sexual need is present, it don't inhibit painfully. 3. Somebody who have hepatitis, diabetes, heart disease, poor constitution avoids coitus. And western nursing management, for sexual management of elderly people, is ; 1. There is approaching with psychological, pharmacological, technical, surgical area in healthy sexual rehabilitation by Smith(1999). 2. Psychological-Social approaching method by Hooyman & Kiyalk(1996) can be provided for elderly sexuality. As this, concrete nursing intervention can be applied and additional counsel is needed with professional medical-nursing team. Through there understand and percept importance and need of elderly sexuality management on results of literature view, as above, concrete east-west nursing intervention of elderly sexuality will be researched. And research which confirm the meaning, How elderly people, themselves have been perceived, will be processed. This will have more contribution on elderly-oriented nursing intervention without false viewing of elderly sexuality.
This descriptive study was conducted to determine the awareness by doctors and patients of the hospital based home nursing service, and the willingness of the patients as well as the doctors to use the service if provided. The convenience samples consisted of 240 hospitalized medical-surgical patients, and 64 doctors from one' hospital. The data was collected from June 1 to June 30, 2000, by questionnairs and interviews. The results of the study were as follows: 1. 57.4% of the subjects were male patients. 35.8% were over 60 years old. and incomes ranged from 1.000,000 to 1.990,000 Won per month in 33.2% of the subjects. 2. 61.3% were unaware of home nursing. 52.7% of the subjects got information about home nursing via TV, magazines, and newspapers, and 83.4% of them showed a willingness to use the service if available. For doctors, 87%, of them said that they were aware of home nursing, and 84.4% viewed the service as necessary. However, only 39.1% responded that they are willing to refer their patients to the home nursing service if it is available. 3. Those who know about the service perceived it more advantageous; however, many do not know about it. Based on the above findings, the following suggestions are made: (1) It is necessary to hold a workshop or a seminar about hospital based home nursing service to draw attention of hospital personnel. (2) There is a need to publicize home nursing service to patients and their family members. (3) Further research is necessary to analyze cost/effectiveness of a hospital based home nursing service for the hospital.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review and analyze the trend and issues of nursing research on music therapy. This study was aimed to help direct developing better music therapy programs in the future. Method: We reviewed 57 dissertations and published articles from 1983 to Feb. 2005 that were related to music therapy in nursing. Result: Among the 57 published researches on music therapy, 47 (82.5%) were dissertations and 10 (17.5%) were published articles. Among the 57 researches, 55 (96.5%) were experiential researches and 2 (3.5%) were non-experimental researches. Surgical patients were the most popular subject for researches. The number of subject was a minimum of 7 people and maximum of 143 people. Listening to music 41 (74.5%) was the most popular program for music therapy. Among 55 researches, 33 (60.0%) had a music therapy session of 25-60 minutes and this was the most popular time duration of therapy. Among all the 108 dependent variables, 57 (52.8%) were psychological variables, 40 (37.0%) were physical variables and 11 (10.2%) were social-cognitive variables. Conclusion: There is an urgent need to develop systematic music therapy programs with different nursing interventions, as based on theories and principles while considering the physical, psychological, and social characteristic of the subjects.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of oral hygiene for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) incidence. Methods: This study was used a nonequivalent control group posttest design. This study was performed in two groups, experimental group and control group. The experimental group (36 patients) had performed oral care for 6 times a day. The control group (39 patients) had followed and 3 times oral care a day. Participants were patients of 20 years of age or older on mechanical ventilation more than 48 hours from July 5 to October 31 in 2007 at the medical and surgical ICU of C university hospital. Results: VAP occurred in 5 cases in the control group, while only 1 case occurred in the experimental group. Incidence for 1000 ventilator day was 12.59 in the control group and 2.18 in the experimental group. Conclusion: Nursing intervention of 6 times oral care a day proved to decrease incidence of VAP. A guideline should be made using the above nursing intervention for the critical ill patients receiving mechanical ventilation.
Purpose: This study attempted to develop a scale that measures the level of patients' recognition of the nurses' care, based on Watson's caring theory, and confirmed its reliability and validity. Methods: The items were developed through a literature review and an expert content validity test. The questionnaires were administered to 285 inpatients of internal medicine and surgical units at two general hospitals. Construct validity was tested using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability was tested using Cronbach's alpha. Results: This process resulted in a preliminary scale composed of 34 items; We used item analysis and five exploratory factor analyses, and consequently selected 14 items composed of three factors (respect, genuineness, and relationality). The confirmatory factor analysis verified the model fit and convergent and discriminant validity of the final items; criterion validity was confirmed with the positive correlation with the measurement scale of the patient-perceived quality of nursing. The overall scale reliability had a Cronbach's alpha of .92, which indicated internal consistency and reliability. Conclusion: The developed scale showed content, construct, and criterion validity, and reliability, as well as convergent validity for each item and discriminant validity between the factors. This makes it suitable for use in a diverse range of future studies on nurse communication using structural equation models.
Purpose: The usability, user satisfaction, and impact of electronic nursing record (ENR) systems were investigated. Methods: This mixed-method research was performed as a time-motion (TM) study and a survey which were carried out at six hospitals between August and November 2013. The TM study involved 108 nurses from medical, surgical, and intensive care units at each hospital, plus an additional 48 nurses who served as nonparticipating observers. In the survey, 1879 volunteer nurses completed the Impact of ENR Systems Scale, the System Usability Scale, and a global satisfaction scale. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed. Results: The mean scores for the ENR impact, system usability, and satisfaction were 4.28 (out of 6), 58.62 (out of 100), and 74.31 (out of 100), respectively, and they differed significantly between hospitals (F=43.43, p<.001, F=53.08 and p<.001, and F=29.13 and p<.001, respectively). A workflow fragmentation assessment revealed different patterns of ENR system use among the included hospitals. Three user characteristics-educational background, practice period, and experience of using paper records-significantly affected the system usability and satisfaction scores. Conclusion: The system quality varied widely among the ENR systems. The generally low-to-moderate levels of system usability and user satisfaction suggest many opportunities for improvement.
Purpose: This study was to develop, implement, and evaluate an e-learning education program for improving practical knowledge and preventing nursing errors and adverse events of nurses working in the operating room (OR). Method: The e-learning program was developed and evaluated according to the following processes: 1) preparation phase 2) implementation phase 3) evaluation phase. In evaluation phase, the effectiveness was analyzed based on the Kirkpatrick's model. Results: The e-learning program consisted of OR basic nursing skills and techniques and nursing activities' manual based on the categories of nursing errors: surgical operation preparation, nursing skills and techniques, environment management, patient safety and comfort, and patient monitoring. The program was provided through on-line, http://cafe.daum.net/pnuhorn, for 4 weeks. The mean score(percent) of participants' satisfaction was $21.24{\pm}1.71$(68.2%). Their total knowledge level was significantly improved(Z=-3.00, p=.003) and specifically in the category of environment management(Z=-3.77, p<.001) and patient monitoring(Z=-2.46, p=.014). The occurrence of nursing errors or adverse events was a little decreased, but not statistically significant(Z=-3.10, p=.756). Conclusion: E-learning for nurses is one way of effective and efficient teaching-learning strategies. For better e-learning, it is important to develop the vital content of the education and objective measures for detecting nursing errors and adverse events.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to examine the relationships between nurses' knowledge and performance for the prevention of intravascular catheter-related infections (ICRI) according to the strength of recommendations in evidence based guidelines (EBG). Methods: The total participants were 144 nurses working for medical surgical unit and intensive care unit. Data were collected from July 12 to July 30, 2010 and analyzed by one way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: The knowledge and performance mean scores were $0.80{\pm}0.17$ and $3.04{\pm}0.31$ for peripheral venous catheter (PVC) management, and $0.83{\pm}0.17$ and $3.00{\pm}0.30$ for central venous catheter (CVC) management respectively. The items of category IA had the highest knowledge score (F=44.70, p<.001) and the items of category II had the highest performance score (F=47.09, p<.001) in PVC management, while the items of category IA had the highest knowledge (F=20.04, p<.001) and performance scores (F=18.20, p<.001) in CVC management. Knowledge and performance scores were significantly correlated in CVC management (r=.24, p=.004), but not in PVC management (r=.03, p=.753). Conclusion: EBG for the prevention of ICRI was not fully implemented in clinical settings. These findings emphasize that clinical professions need to develope strategies to enhance nursing practices with evidence based guideline.
