More than a decade after their development and first wave of deployment, Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing have recently returned on the corporate agendas of a larger number of corporations across industries and supply chains. In the wake of their re-surge, this commentary addresses the evolution, context, content and deployment patterns of the two distinct management concepts. It also analyses claims in the business press that a merger is taking place between Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing. Here, it is found that there is not enough evidence to broadly support such claims, and it is only concluded that there is some evidence of an early tend towards a merger and that a possible merger would have many synergies and advantages. Finally, an example from a Scandinavian manufacturing company is provided that explains how Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing can be used in a beneficial way for companies to reach world-class performance.
The conventional SiC-type of lightning arresters in distribution systems has been replaced by ZnO-type because the ZnO-type has characteristics such as outstanding non linearity, high energy absorption capability, surge suppressing performance, and excellent response to abrupt wave. Out of the various types of lightning arrester failures, some which have been often reported could be prevented in advance. Therefore, the preventive countermeasures which can cope with the failures are strongly required. This paper summed up and analyzed the lightning arrester failures which occurred, from 1983 to 1992, in distribution systems in order to provide fundamental data, classified by year, to make countermeasures.
This study evaluated the impedance characteristics of earth termination system and developed a variable frequency-typed inverter (measuring tool) for the utilization in ground design for lightning protection. The variable-frequency-typed inverter were composed of rectification part, voltage adjuster, IGBT controller and measuring part. Meanwhile, the square wave signal of variable frequency converted its frequency up to lightning surge band by using an IGBT after rectifying an alternating current (AC). It conducted performance evaluation of ground impedance of actual earth termination system by using the developed measuring tool for ground impedance and confirmed that such impedance-oriented performance evaluation was effective in the design of lightning protection.

This study is to investigate the pressure wave characteristics and the absorption of maximum and minimum pressure generated by instantaneous valve closure at the end of the straightening copper piping system with and without a water hammer arrester. Experiments were conducted under the following conditions : initial pressure 1~5 bar, flow velocity 0.6~3.0 m/s, water temperature $20^{\circ}C$ and air volume of water hammer arrester $80~180^cm^3$. Experimental results show that the optimum air volume of water hammer arrester is 110㎤.
This paper describes a very fast rising high voltage pulse generation for studying surge phinomenon and prebreakdown of liquid dielectric by appling the traveling wave theory of the distributed circuit. This very fast rising high voltage pulse generator consists of a charging coaxial cable, a discharging switch, and a terminating resistance. As results, the rising time of pulses are about 31(nsec), which is very fast, and its duration is 950[nsec] when using 200[m] coaxial cable. The length of the coaxial cable and changing voltage can regulate the duration and the amplitude or the polarity of the pulse. When terminated the resistance, capacitor and inductor, the measured waveform corresponds with simulated waveform.
Because of using PWM inverters and converters. The problems of insulation breakdown is emerging in both high voltage motors and general motors. In conventional methods, the viewpoint of surge problems is wave propagation with or without cable and inverter. For the purpose of knowing the situation of insulation breakdown, the end-turn coil of windings in the motor winding insulation structure is modelled by FEM, and field analysis of that is done. For first step, only end-turn coil is modelled and the model is simulated with FEM by approximating the resistivity of metallic foil surrounding insulation layers with having nonlinear property. Next, the result of simulation with nonlinear resistivity are compared with the result of linear resistivity. Because of microscope analysis, there is the problem of generalization but the situation of corona discharge in end-turn coil will be explained from this simulation.
In this paper, the switching characteristics of the active clamp type flyback converter, which is deemed suitable for the miniaturization of the external power supply for home appliance, were analyzed and the process of reducing the switching loss was explained. The active clamp type flyback converter operating in the DCM has confirmed that the surge voltage of the main switch does not occur and the turn-off / on loss of the switch do not occur in principle. Also, in the case of the switch for synchronous rectifier, it was showed that the switch current showed half-wave rectified sinusoidal characteristic, and the switching loss was reduced. The switching characteristics of the experimental results gathered from 120 W class prototype were compared with the theoretical waveform in the steady-state and it was confirmed that the power conversion efficiency of the active clamp type flyback converter was maintained high due to the reduction of the switching loss.

This paper presents the efficiency of a floating vertical axis wind turbine with variable-pitch. A model was designed to use the lift force and drag force for blades with various pitch angles. The blade's pitch angle is controlled by the stopper. To validate the efficiency of the wind turbine discussed in this paper, a model test was carried out through a single model efficiency experiment and wave tank experiment. The parameters of the single model efficiency experiment were the wind speed, electronic load, and pitch angle. The wave tank experiment was performed using the most efficient pitch angle from the results of the single model efficiency experiment. According to the results of the wave tank experiment, the surge and pitch motion of a structure slightly affect the efficiency of a wind turbine, but the heave motion has a large effect because the heights of the wind turbine and wind generator are almost the same.
The motion response of floating structures is of significant concern in marine engineering. Floating structures can be disturbed by waves, winds, and currents that create undesirable motions of the vessel, therefore causing challenges to its operation. For a floating structure, mooring lines are provided in order to maintain its position; these should also produce a restoring force when the vessel is displaced. Therefore, it is important to investigate the tension of mooring lines and the motion responses of a twin barge when moored to guarantee the safety of the barge during its operation. It is essential to precisely identify the characteristics of the motion responses of a moored barge under different loading conditions. In this study, the motion responses of a moored twin barge were measured in regular waves of seven different wave directions. The experiment was performed with regular waves with different wavelengths and wave directions in order to estimate the twin-barge motions and the tension of the mooring line. In addition, the motion components of roll, pitch, and heave are completely free. In contrast, the surge, sway, and yaw components are fixed. In the succeeding step, a time-domain analysis is carried out in order to obtain the responses of the structure when moored. As a result, the Response Amplitude Operator (RAO) motion value was estimated for different wave directions. The results of the experiment show that the motion components of the twin barge have a significant effect on the tension of the mooring lines.

Articulated loading platforms (ALPs) belongs to a class of offshore structures known as compliant. ALP motions have time periods falling in the wind excitation frequency range due to their compliant behaviour. This paper deals with the dynamic behavior of a double hinged ALP subjected to low-frequency wind forces with random waves. Nonlinear effects due to variable submergence, fluctuating buoyancy, variable added mass, and hydrodynamic forces are considered in the analysis. The random sea state is characterized by the Pierson-Moskowitz (P-M) spectrum. The wave forces on the submerged elements of the platform's shaft are calculated using Morison's Equation with Airy's linear wave theory ignoring diffraction effects. The fluctuating wind load has been estimated using Ochi and Shin wind velocity spectrum for offshore structures. The nonlinear dynamic equation of motion is solved in the time domain by the Wilson-θ method. The wind-structure interactions, along with the effect of various other parameters on the platform response, are investigated. The effect of offset of aerodynamic center (A.C.) with the center of gravity (C.G.) of platform superstructure has also been investigated. The outcome of the analyses indicates that low-frequency wind forces affect the response of ALP to a large extent, which otherwise is not enhanced in the presence of only waves. The mean wind modifies the mean position of the platform surge response to the positive side, causing an offset. Various power spectral densities (PSDs) under high and moderate sea states show that apart from the significant peak occurring at the two natural frequencies, other prominent peaks also appear at very low frequencies showing the influence of wind on the response.
