  • Concrete structures need repairing due to various reasons such as deteriorative effects, overloading, poor quality of workmanship and design failures. Cement based repair mortars are the most widely used solutions for concrete repair applications. Various factors may affect the bond strength between concrete substrate and repair mortars. In this paper, the effects of polymer additives, strength of the concrete substrate, surface roughness, surface wetness and aging on the bond between concrete substrate and repair mortar has been investigated. Full factorial experimental design is employed to investigate the main and interaction effects of these factors on the bond strength. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) under design of experiments (DOE) in Minitab 14 Statistical Software is used for the analysis. Results showed that the interaction bond strength is higher when the application surface is wet and strength of the concrete substrate is comparatively high. According to the results obtained from the analysis, the most effective repair mortar additive in terms of bonding efficiency was styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) within the investigated polymers and test conditions. This bonding ability improvement can be attributed to the self-flowing ability, high flexural strength and comparatively low air content of SBR modified repair mortars. On the other hand, styrene acrylate rubber (SAR) modified mortars was found incompatible with the concrete substrate.

  • This paper presents a new strength method of underground box structures under additional surface load. An L-bracing using pre-flexed steel member threads called the "Pre-flex strength method" is used to improve capacity of the RC box structure under earth pressure due to additional surface load. The pre-flexed steel member is fixed the top and bottom of the structure after chemical anchor was installed by drilling hole on the box structure. The structural performance was evaluated analytically. 3 types of underground RC box structure were used; $2.0m{\times}2.0m$, $3.0m{\times}3.0m$ and $4.0m{\times}4.0m$. For the performance evaluation, structure analysis were performed on moment and shear resisting structures with and without pre-flex strength method. Numerical results confirmed that the proposed strength member system installed on underground RC box structures enhanced the strength capacity. The feasible region of the proposed pre-flex strength method in accordance with the earth pressure due to additional surface depth was evaluated.

  • The influences of chloride-free components of the cement additive: triethanolamine, triisopropanolamine, sodium hyposulfite and calcium gluconate on the 1d, 3d and 28d compressive strength of cement were investigated by response surface methodology. It found the early strength activators, triethanolamine and sodium hyposulfite could enhance the 1d strength of cement effectively but they did not contribute to the 3d strength enhancement, and further their interaction was able to decrease the 28d strength of cement. Calcium gluconate was not that effective for the strength enhancement on 3 and 28 days when it's simply dosed. However the interaction effect of calcium gluconate with triisopropanolamine could strongly favor the strength enhancement of cement after 3 days. Results indicated it was necessary to focus attention on the potential interactions among the chemical components. And for the concern of four chemicals studied in this paper, it was feasible to formulated a kind of chloride-free cement additive that can be effective for the early strength of cement and its the strength after 3 days.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical property and carbonation resistance of concretes using surface treated lightweight aggregate. In order to evaluate mechanical property and carbonation resistance, slump, compressive strength, and carbonation depth are tested. Slump of concretes using surface treated lightweight aggregate measured 120~125mm, which are lower than slump of NWAC. Compared to compressive strength of NWAC, compressive strength of concretes using surface treated lightweight aggregate showed a level of 82.8~95.9%. In carbonation resistance test, carbonation depth of concretes using surface treated lightweight aggregate measured 10.2~11.3mm, which are lower than carbonation depth of NWAC. As a result, it is found that compressive strength is decreased slightly but carbonation resistance is improved, in case of using surface treated lightweight aggregate.

  • This paper summarizes the results of a study which uses the recently developed Optical Profile Microscopy technique (Dove and Frost, 1996) as the basis for investigating the role of geomembrane surface roughness on the shear strength of goomembrane/geotextile interfaces. The results show that interface friction can be quantitatively related to the surface roughness of the geomembrane. The peak and residual interface strengths increase dramatically through the use of textured geomembranes as opposed to smooth geomembranes. For the smooth geomembranes, the sliding of the geotextile is the main shear mechanism. For the textured geomembranes, the peak interface strength is mainly mobilized through the micro-texture of the geomembrane, however, the residual interface strength is primarily attributed to macro scale surface roughness which pulls out and breaks the filaments from the geotextile. The results of this study can be extended to the other interfaces such as joints in rock mass, and also can be used to provide a quantitative framework that can lead to a significantly improved basis for the selection and design of geotextiles and geomembranes in direct contact.

  • Effect of high voltage screening was examined on mechanical strength of titania ceramics with two different surface roughness. Roughly finished sample showed degraded mechanical strength meaning that the introduced flaw played the role of starting point of mechanical fracture. On such sample, electrically weak parts were eliminated by applying a screening field. Mechanical strength measurement on survived parts revealed that after screening the Weibull plots bended to become a convex curve while plots at high strength region were almost the same. This result means that relatively low mechanical strength parts were eliminated by the electrical method. As a result the Weibull modulus calculated from all the data increased, demonstrating the effect of high voltage screening on titania ceramics containing fracture controlling surface flaws. Roles of the surface flaw such as a common weak spot for both failures are disscussed in relation to the electric field concentration similar to that of mechanical stress.

  • The secondary barrier of cargo containment for membrane LNG tank is composed of composite materials such as rigid triplex (rigid secondary barrier, RSB) and flexible triplex (flexible secondary barrier, FSB). RSB and FSB are adhered to each other using an epoxy adherent and the quality of the secondary barrier depends on the bonding strength between them. The bonding strength between RSB and FSB is greatly influenced by the surface condition of RSB prior to joining. In this study, the effect of surface condition prior to joining on the joint strength and the fracture mode occurred between RSB and FSB have been examined in order to establish a proper surface treatment method for improving the bonding strength at the temperature of $-170^{\circ}C$.

  • Induction surface hardening is widely used to enhance local strength and hardness. However, most research is only to have a focus on fatigue life and fatigue behavior is not so much studied. So, in this study, Cr-Mo steel alloy(SCM440) was used to show the effect of residual stress and micro hole on the fatigue strength for base metal and induction surface hardened specimen. In addition, the fatigue characteristic between surface hardened and fully hardened steel is somewhat different. It is caused by hardness distribution, residual stress and inclusions etc.. Crack origins are generally micro inclusions for the high strength steel. So, the distribution of inclusions is analyzed statistically.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the effects of a hydrofluoric acid (HA; solution of hydrogen fluoride [HF] in water)-based smart etching (SE) solution at an elevated temperature on yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) ceramics in terms of bond strength and morphological changes. Materials and Methods: Eighty sintered Y-TZP specimens were prepared for shear bond strength (SBS) testing. The bonding surface of the Y-TZP specimens was treated with 37% phosphoric acid etching at 20℃-25℃, 4% HA etching at 20℃-25℃, or HA-based SE at 70℃-80℃. In all groups, zirconia primers were applied to the bonding surface of Y-TZP. For each group, 2 types of resin cement (with or without methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate [MDP]) were used. SBS testing was performed. Topographic changes of the etched Y-TZP surface were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The results were analyzed and compared using 2-way analysis of variance. Results: Regardless of the type of resin cement, the highest bond strength was measured in the SE group, with significant differences compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). In all groups, MDP-containing resin cement yielded significantly higher bond strength values than MDP-free resin cement (p < 0.05). It was also shown that the Y-TZP surface was etched by the SE solution, causing a large change in the surface topography. Conclusions: Bond strength significantly improved when a heated HA-based SE solution was applied to the Y-TZP surface, and the etched Y-TZP surface was more irregular and had higher surface roughness.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the effect of three different surface treatments on the shear bond strength of lithium disilicate ceramics to enamel. Methods: Totally 60 lithium disilicate ceramic disc specimens were fabricated with IPS e.max press (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and Mazic Claro (Vericom, Korea). 30 specimens in each lithium disilicate ceramic were assigned to 3 groups of the each following surface treatment: 1) $50{\mu}m$ airborne particle abrasion+silane, 2) 9.5% hydroflouric acid etching (HF)+silane, 3) $50{\mu}m$ airborne particle abrasion+9.5% HF+silane. Lithium disilicate ceramic surfaces after surface treatments were AFM examined. The shear bond strength was measured in a universal testing machine at 0.5mm/min crosshead speed. All data were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test(${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: The mean surface roughness of lithium disilicate ceramics ranged from $0.178{\mu}m$ to $0.441{\mu}m$. The mean shear bond strengths ranged from $23.81{\pm}2.78MPa$ to $33.99{\pm}4.85MPa$. Conclusion: 1. Mazic Claro showed higher shear bond strength than IPS e.max press at 3 different surface treatments, and no statistically significant was observed. 2. The shear bond strength of IPS e.max press was strongly enhanced as surface treated with $50{\mu}m$ airborne particle abrasion and 9.5% hydroflouric acid etching. And there was no statistical significance at the shear bond strength of Mazic Claro with surface treatments.
