  • Surface resistance of electro-deposited copper with its thickness, current density and surface roughness was determined by using a 4-point probe analyzer. The copper was prepared electrochemically on 316 stainless steel substrate in copper sulfate solution at the condition of $1A/dm^2$, 298 K, and 6.5 cm-electrode distance. The surface resistance of the copper sheet in the range of $0.93-0.97{\Omega}$ increased with the copper thickness in the range of $21-70{\mu}m$. The surface resistance in the range of $0.963-1.009{\Omega}$ also increased with current density in the range of $0.5-2A/dm^2$. The increased surface resistances corresponded to 11% for thickness and 25% for current density, respectively.

  • This research deals with a problem of reconstructing 3D surface structures from their 2D projections, which is an important research topic in computer vision. In order to provide robust reconstruction algorithm, that is reliable even in the presence of uncertainty in the range images, we first present a detailed model and analysis of several error sources and their effects on measuring three-dimensional surface properties using the space encoded range imaging technique. Our approach has two key elements. The first is the error modeling for the space encoding range sensor and its propagation to the 3D surface reconstruction problem. The second key element in our approach is the algorithm for removing outliers in the range image. Such analyses, to our knowledge, have never attempted before. Experimental results show that our approach is significantly reliable.

  • The corelation between surface tensions and surface appearances of SK O5a opaque glazes for earthen wares were investigated. The surface tension values were theoretically calculated by using Dietzel's factors of constituent oxides of glaze. The surface appearances of glazes, especially the pinhole phenomena were strongly effected by the surface tension values showing the following general tendencies: (1) In the range of 305±3 dynes/cm of surface tensions, glazes showed almost no pjnholes. (2) In the range of surface tensions less than 300 dynes/cm, the large numbers of small pinholes or eggshell textures were observed. (3) In the range of surface tensions higher than 310 dynes/cm, large and deep pinholes were observed. (4) The contact angles of glazes on the wall tile body substrate are in the good proportional agreement with the surface tension values calculated by Dietzel's factors.

  • Optical coherence tomography(OCT) can provide real-time and non-invasive subsurface imaging with ultra-high resolution of micrometer scale. However, conventional OCT systems generally have a limited imaging depth range within a depth of only 1-2 mm. To overcome the limitation, we have proposed an active surface tracking algorithm used in common-path Fourier-domain OCT system in order to extend the imaging depth range. The surface tracking algorithm based on the threshold and Savitzky-Golay filter of A-scan data was applied to real-time tracking. The algorithm has controlled a moving stage according to the sample's surface variance in real time. An OCT image obtained by the algorithm clearly show an extended imaging depth range. Consequently, the proposed algorithm demonstrated the potential for improving the conventional OCT systems with limitary depth range.

  • The presence of tetragonal phase at the surface of $LiMn_2O_4$ pinicle due to a Jahn-Teller offset was previously reported to be one of the causes for capacity fading observed during cycling of $Li//Li_xMn_2O_4$ in 4V range. Further, it is reported that a Jahn-Teller effect in 4V range may be suppressed by substitution of Mn ions with Li ions or other transition metal ions. However, the direct evidence of the suppression of a Jahn-Teller effect in 4V range by substitution of Mn ions with other metal ions has not been reported. The dissolution and formation of surface film at the surface of $LiMn_2O_4$ electrodes also reportedly affect the capacity fading or rate capability. This study reports on the evidence of the onset and suppression of a Jahn-Teller effect in 4V range and the dissolution and formation of surface film at the surface of $LiMn_2O_4$ thin film electrodes using in situ bending beam method (BBM) in situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM).

  • A lava tube is one of the hot issues of lunar science because it is regarded as a good candidate place for setting a lunar base. Recently much effort has been made to find lunar lava tubes. However, preceding works mainly made use of high-resolution lunar surface image data in conjunction with geomorphological consideration to present some lava tube candidates. Yet, those candidates stay no more than indirect indications. We propose a new data analysis technique of High Frequency (HF) radar observation data to find lunar lava tubes of which location depth is smaller than the range resolution of the radar pulse. Such shallow target echoes cannot be resolved from surface echoes, which presents the different location of the lunar surface compared to that of real lunar surface. The proposed technique instead finds the surface range (distance from LRS to the reflector of the most intense signal) anomaly which occurs as a result of the low range resolution of LRS pulse. We applied this technique to the surface range of Kaguya Lunar Radar Sounder (LRS) data. The surface range was deduced to make LRS surface elevation which was compared with the average surface elevation of Kaguya Digital Terrain Model (DTM). An anomalous discrepancy of the surface elevation was found in the Rima Galilaei area, which suggests the existence of a shallow lava tube.

  • This paper proposes a multiresolution surface parameter estimation method for range images. Based on robust estimation of surface parameters, it approximates a patch to a planar surface in the locally adaptive window. Selection of resolution is made pixelwise by comparing a locally computed homogeneity measure with th eglobal threshold determined by te distribution of the approximation error. The proposed multiresolution surface parameter estimation method is applied to range image reconstruction. Computer simulation results with noisy rnag eimages contaminated by additive gaussian noise and impulse noise show that the proposed multiresolution reconstruction method well preserves step and roof edges compared with the conventional methods. Also the segmentation method based on the estimated surface parameters is shown to be robust to noise.

  • The relationship the between electrical properties and surface roughness (Ra) of a wet-etched silicon wafer were studied. Ra was measured by an alpha-step process and atomic force microscopy (AFM) while varying the measuring range $10{\times}10$, $40{\times}40$, and $1000{\times}1000{\mu}m$. The resistivity was measured by assessing the surface resistance using a four-point probe method. The relationship between the resistivity and Ra was explained in terms of the surface roughness. The minimum error value between the experimental and theoretical resistivities was 4.23% when the Ra was in a range of $10{\times}10{\mu}m$ according to AFM measurement. The maximum error value was 14.09% when the Ra was in a range of $40{\times}40{\mu}m$ according to AFM measurement. Thus, the resistivity could be estimated when the Ra was in a narrow range.

  • Perception of surfaces from range images plays a key role in 3-D object recognition. Recognition of 3-D objects from range images is performed by matching the perceived surface descriptions with stored object models. The first step of the 3-d object recognition from range images is image segmentation. In this paper, an approach for segmenting 3-D range images into symbolic surface descriptions using spatial Gabor filter is proposed. Since the phase of data has a lot of important information, the phase information with magnitude information can effectively segment the range imagery into regions satisfying a common homogeneity criterion. The phase and magnitude of Gabor filter can represent a unique featur vector at a point of range data. As a result, range images are trnasformed into feature vectors in 3-parameter representation. The methods not only to extract meaningful features but also to classify a patch information from range images is presented.

  • Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment. Many pharmaceuticals are not completely removed during wastewater treatment, leading to their presence in wastewater treatment effluents, rivers, lakes, and ground water. Here, we developed analytical methods for monitoring ten pharmaceuticals from surface water by LC/ESI-MS/MS. For sample clean-up and extraction, MCX (mixed cation exchange) and HLB (hydrophilic-lipophilic balance) solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges were used. The limits of detection (LOD) in distilled water and the blank surface water were in the range of 0.006 - 0.65 and 1.66 - 45.05 pg/mL, respectively. The limits of quantitation (LOQ) for the distilled water and the blank surface water were in the range of 0.02 - 2.17 and 5.52 - 150.15 pg/mL, respectively. The absolute recoveries for fortified water samples were between 62.1% and 125.4%. Intra-day precision and accuracy for the blank surface water were 2.9% - 24.1% (R.S.D.) and -16.3% - 16.3% (bias), respectively. In surface wastewater near rivers, chlortetracycline and acetylsalicylic acid were detected frequently in the range of 0.017 - 5.404 and 0.029 - 0.269 ng/mL, respectively. Surface water near rivers had higher levels than surface water of domestic treatment plants.
