This paper deals with change of contact angle, surface potential decay, surface resistivity and XPS of water-treated epoxy insulator. From the experimental results on the contact angle was reduced from $74^{\circ}$to $24^{\circ}$ due to the formation of polar hydroxyl groups on surface which was associated with intermolecular reaction between epoxy chains of three-dimensional network structure and water molecules. From the experimental results in the surface potential decay of water treated-samples, it was found that the accumulation of charge is decreased and the surface potential decay time is shortened by the interaction of polar hydroxyl groups induced on the treated surface as the increment of treatment time. The positive charging on the treated surface compared with negative charging is relatively lowered by the induction of polar hydroxyl groups. The surface resistivity was changed from $10^{15}[{\Omega}/cm^2$] to $10^{12}[{\Omega}/cm^2$] caused by water treatment. From XPS, it was found that the changes affected by the surface degradation of epoxy were caused by the generation of carboxyl groups through the chain decomposition and recombination with oxygen molecules in the air.
A number of surface modification techniques using immobilization of biofunctional molecules of Titanium (Ti) for dental implants as well as surface properties of Ti and Ti alloys have been developed. The method using passive surface oxide film on titanium takes advantage of the fact that the surface film on Ti consists mainly of amorphous or low-crystalline and nonstoichiometric $TiO_2$. In another method, the reconstruction of passive films, calcium phosphate naturally forms on Ti and its alloys, which is characteristic of Ti. A third method uses the surface active hydroxyl group. The oxide surface immediately reacts with water molecules and hydroxyl groups are formed. The hydroxyl groups dissociate in aqueous solutions and show acidic and basic properties. Several additional methods are also possible, including surface modification techniques, immobilization of poly(ethylene glycol), and immobilization of biomolecules such as bone morphogenetic protein, peptide, collagen, hydrogel, and gelatin.

Effects of high-temperature slurry were investigated on the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) performance of tetra-ethyl ortho-silicate (TEOS) film with silica and ceria slurries by the surface analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The pH showed a slight tendency to decrease with increasing slurry temperature, which means that the hydroxyl $(OH^-)$ groups increased in slurry as the slurry temperature increased and then they diffused into the TEOS film. The surface of TEOS film became hydro-carbonated by the diffused hydroxyl groups. The hydro-carbonated surface of TEOS film could be removed more easily. Consequently, the removal rate of TEOS film improved dramatically with increasing slurry temperature.
To enhance the power conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), the surface of titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) photoelectrode was modified by hydroxylation treatment with $NH_4OH$ solution at $70^{\circ}C$ for 6 h. The $NH_4OH$ solutions of various concentrations were used to introduce the hydroxyl groups on $TiO_2$ surface. As the concentration of $NH_4OH$ was increased, the short-circuit current density ($J_{SC}$) value and conversion efficiency of solar cells were increased because the amount of adsorbed dye molecules on $TiO_2$ surface was increased. As a result of the surface modification to introduce hydroxyl groups, the concentration of adsorbed dye on the $TiO_2$ surface could be improved up to 32.61% without the changes of morphology, surface area and pore volume of particles. The morphology, the specific surface area, the pore volume and the chemical states of $TiO_2$ surface were characterized by using FE-SEM, $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherms and XPS measurements. The amount of adsorbed dye and the performance of fabricated cells were analyzed by using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and solar simulator.
In this paper, we present surface treatments for achieving bonds between PMMA and PDMS substrates. Silane primer is used for the formation of hydroxyl group on PMMA surfaces. The formed hydroxyl groups enhance the bonding strength of PDMS-PMMA substrates without channel clogging and structure deformation. The bonding strength on the different surface treatments (include oxygen plasma, 3-APTES, and corona discharge) is evaluated to find optimal bonding condition. The maximum bonding strength at the optimal surface treatment is over 300 kPa. The surface treatment using silane primer can be used to the bonding process of Micro-TAS and Lab-on-a-Chip.

The interaction of -$Al(CH_3)_2$ with -OH on a fully OH-terminated Si (001) surface was studied using density functional theory. Two sites for $Al(CH_3)_3$ to react with the -OH on the surface were identified. The $-Al(CH_3)_2$ product energetically favored the dimer-row site rather than the inter-row site because the Al atom of $-Al(CH_3)_2$ at the dimer-row site was attracted by the lone pair electrons of the O atom in the neighboring -OH. The energy barrier for the transfer of the $-Al(CH_3)_2$ between the two sites was 0.11 eV, and therefore, the $-Al(CH_3)_2$ at the inter-row site can easily transfer to the dimer-row site at room temperature.

Several dual-curable acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) were synthesized by the radical polymerization of acrylic monomers containing benzophenone, hydroxyl, and alkyl groups. The optimum extent of UV-induced cure was determined by varying the content of the benzophenone groups (the photoinitiator) from 0.5 to 1.5 wt%. The weight average molecular weight of the polymers obtained ranged from 300,000 to 700,000 amu. The coated pressure-sensitive adhesives were cured either by short UV exposure to induce the grafting of acrylic polymers, or by heating for 6 hat $60^{\circ}C$ to promote the reactions between the polyisocyanates and hydroxyl groups. The dual-curing behavior was determined by monitoring both processes quantitatively by infrared spectroscopy. The developed dual-curable acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives were found to compensate for the limitations in UV-induced curing of thick coatings.
Clay minerals are a major player to determine geochemical cycles of trace metals and carbon in the critical zone which covers the atmosphere down to groundwater aquifers. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can examine the Earth materials at an atomic level and, therefore, provide detailed fundamental-level insights related to physicochemical properties of clay minerals. In the current study, we have applied classical MD simulations with clayFF force field to dioctahedral clay minerals (i.e., gibbsite, kaolinite, and pyrophyllite) to analyze and compare structural parameters (lattice parameter, atomic pair distance) with experiments. We further calculated vibrational power spectra for the hydroxyls of the minerals by using the MD simulations results. The MD simulations predicted lattice parameters and interatomic distances respectively deviated less than 0.1~3.7% and 5% from the experimental results. The stretching vibrational wavenumber of the hydroxyl groups were calculated $200-300cm^{-1}$ higher than experiment. However, the trends in the frequencies among different surface hydroxyl groups of each mineral was consistent with experimental results. The angle formed by the surface hydroxyl group with the (001) plane and hydrogen bond distances of the surface hydroxyls were consistent with experimental result trends. The inner hydroxyls, however, showed results somewhat deviated from reported data in the literature. These results indicate that molecular dynamics simulations with clayFF can be a useful method in elucidating the roles of surface hydroxyl groups in the adsorption of metal ions to clay minerals.
The CNDO/2 calculations have been applied on cluster models for the representative hydroxyls on faujasite surface to get total energies, dipole moments, Wiberg bond orders and formal charge densities. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that the acid strength of surface hydroxyls of faujasite depends on the geometry of hydroxyls and the Si/Al ratios of framework. The $Br{\ddot{o}}nsted$ acid strength of bridging hydroxyl is higher than that of isolated hydroxyls. The stabilities of cluster models increased with increase of the Si/Al ratios.
Silicon direct bonding technology is very attractive for both silicon-on-insulator devices and sensor fabrication because of its thermal stress free structure and stability. The process of SDB includes hydration of silicon wafer and heat treatment in a wet oxidation furnace. After hydration process, hydroxyl groups of silicon wafer were analyzed by using Fourier transformation-infrared spectroscopy. In case of hydrophilic treatment using a ($H_{2}O_{2}\;:\;H_{2}SO_{4}$) solution, hydroxyl groups are observed in a broad band around the 3474 $cm^{-1}$ region. However, hydroxyl groups do not appear in case of diluted HF solution. The bonded wafer was etched by using tetramethylammonium hydroxide etchant. The surface of the self etch-stopped silicon dioxide is completely flat, so that it can be used as sensor applications such as pressure, flow and acceleration, etc..
