  • Nano-wear behavior of amorphous carbon films was studied by Atomic Force Microscopy. The a-C films are deposited on Si(100) substrate by DC magnetron sputtering method. The influences of different surface roughness on the nano-wear are investigated. Nano-wear tests were carried out using a very sharp diamond coated tip. Its spring constant was 1.6 N/m and radius of curvature was 110 nm. Normal force used in the wear tests ranged 0 to 400 nN. It was found that surface depression occurred during scratching because of plastic deformation and abrasive wear (cutting St ploughing). Wear depth increased linearly with normal force. Changing the surface roughness variables according to the bias pulse control, the less surface roughness decreased the wear depth. The thickness did not affect the wear resistance.

  • A shape error of the sheet metal product made by a flexible stretch forming process is occurred by a various forming parameters. A die used in the flexible stretch forming is composed of a punch array to obtain the various objective surfaces using only one die. But gaps between the punches induce the shape error and the defect such as a scratch. Forming parameters of the punch size and the elastic pad to prevent the surface defect must be considered in the flexible die design process. In this study, tendency analysis of shape error according to the forming parameters in the flexible stretch process is conducted using a finite element method. Three forming parameters, which are the punch size, the objective curvature radius and the elastic pad thickness, are considered. Finite element modeling using the punch height calculation algorithm and the evaluation method of the shape error, which is a representative value for the formability of formed surface, are proposed. Consequently, the shape error is in proportion to the punch size and is out of proportion to the objective curvature radius and the elastic pad thickness.

  • In this study, process analysis of elbow-shaped tubes using a mandrel has been performed. To reach the final shape within the dimensional tolerance, the process analysis has been performed at various processing parameters such as tube dimensions, the curved cutting surface and the radius of curvature. The area outside the boundary of the target shape was expressed as a quantitative index to analyze the formability. The validation experiments have also been performed in order to increase the reliability of the process analysis. For the processing of elbow-shaped tubes, it is preferable to make the angle of the portion where the punch touches the tube smaller than the opposite angle. And the convex cutting surface is advantageous due to the increased contacts between the punch and the tube ends during the bending process. Elbow tube having larger radius of curvature shows higher dimensional accuracy due to the relatively uniform strain distribution.

  • To reduce the computational cost required for assembling vessel fragments using surface geometry, this paper proposes a fast axis estimation method. Using circular constraint of pottery and local planar patch assumption, it finds the axis of the symmetry. First, the circular constraint on each cylinder is used. A circular symmetric pot can be thought of unions of many cylinders with different radii. It selects one arbitrary point on the pot fragment surface and searches a path where a circumference exists on that point. The variance of curvature will be calculated along the path and the path with the minimum variance will be selected. The symmetric axis will pass through the center of that circle. Second, the planar patch assumption and profile curve is used. The surface of fragment is divided into small patches and each patch is assumed as plane. The surface normal of each patch will intersects the axis in 3D space since each planar patch faces the center of the pot. A histogram method and minimization of the profile curve error are utilized to find the probability distribution of the axis location. Experimental results demonstrate the improvement in speed and robustness of the algorithms.

  • Surface morphology and optical properties such as transmittance and haze effect of glass etched by physical and chemical etching processes were investigated. The physical etching process was carried out by pen type sandblasting process with $15{\sim}20{\mu}m$ dia. of $Al_2O_3$ media; the chemical etching process was conducted using HF-based mixed etchant. Sandblasting was performed in terms of variables such as the distance of 8 cm between the gun nozzle and the glass substrate, the fixed air pressure of 0.5bar, and the constant speed control of the specimen stage. The chemical etching process was conducted with mixed etching solution prepared by combination of BHF (Buffered Hydrofluoric Acid), HCl, and distilled water. The morphology of the glass surface after sandblasting process displayed sharp collision vestiges with nonuniform shapes that could initiate fractures. The haze values of the sandblasted glass were quantitatively acceptable. However, based on visual observation, the desirable Anti-Glare effect was not achieved. On the other hand, irregularly shaped and sharp vestiges transformed into enlarged and smooth micro-spherical craters with the subsequent chemical etching process. The curvature of the spherical crater increased distinctly by 60 minutes and decreased gradually with increasing etching time. Further, the spherical craters with reduced curvature were uniformly distributed over the etched glass surface. The haze value increased sharply up to 55 % and the transmittance decreased by 90 % at 60 minutes of etching time. The ideal haze value range of 3~7 % and transmittance value range of above 90 % were achieved in the period of 240 to 720 minutes of etching time for the selected concentration of the chemical etchant.

  • Finite-element methods are used to study non-adhesive, frictionless rough contact of elastic and plastic solids. Roughness on spherical surfaces is realized by self-affine fractal. True contact area between the rough surfaces and flat rigid surfaces increases with power law under external normal loads. The power exponent is sensitive to surface roughness as well as the curvature of spherical geometry. Surface contact pressures are analyzed and compared for the elastic and plastic solids. Distributions of local contact pressure are shown dependent on the surface roughness and the yield stress of plastic solids.

  • A three-dimensional surface is reconstructed from contour information as identified on two-dimensional computed tomographic slices. Gradient operator with curvature constraint would be applied to extract the contour automatically, and backtracking is also adopted to reduce the tracking error. The surface between the consecutive slice is efficiently reconstructed using a triangular surface tiles. Hidden surface elimination, shading and parallel projection of the reconstructed surface are provied on the display screen.

  • Stereovision is known to be one of the most important tools for robot vision systems. Previously, 2D active contour model has been applied to stereovision by defining the contour on the 3D space instead of image plane. However, the proposed model is still that of curve so that some complex shapes such as surfaces with high curvature can not be properly estimated because of occlusion phenomena. In this paper, the authors extend the curve model to the surface model. The surface is approximated by polygons and new energy function and its optimization method for surface estimation is proposed. Its effectiveness is examined by experiments with real stereo images.

  • A numerical method for simulating two-phase flows including surface force is presented. The method is based on fractional step method of finite volume formulation and the interface is tracked with PLIC VOF method. In the CSF model, as color function, f, representing the location of interface varies steeply in the interface region, we need to use smoothed function f to get accurate unit normal and the curvature. Peskin kernel is used to get smoothed function f. A spherical drop in static equilibrium and three-dimensional merging of gas bubble are tested, resulting in the validation of this method

  • Through the result of calculating the deviation between the value calculated from two-dimensional number formula, one-dimensional number interpretation, and curving part water surface type calculation method, we could confirmed that the deviation is reduced more than 50% when we use curving part water surface type calculation method. Also it was confirmed that there occurs the reduction rate of maximum 59% as the result of comparing with one-dimensional number interpretation since the reduction rate of safe room height was 20%, in 500 CMS of flood water quantity when we planted the construction of levee by curving part water surface type calculation method. And therefore, we have confirmed that the curving water surface type calculation method can be used as a simple formula in rivers with water quantity less than 500 CMS that flows in and out in Jess than 90 degree angle.
