Purpose: The present study investigated how variations in diagonal exercises affect shoulder muscle activity, examining changes in neuromuscular activation during scapular and shoulder diagonal patterns of exercises. Furthermore, we explored whether the exercise phase affects muscle activation. Methods: Sixteen asymptomatic male participants were recruited. Four diagonal pattern exercises (scapular anterior elevation, posterior elevation, flexion-adduction-external rotation, flexion, abduction-external rotation), and two exercise phases (concentric and eccentric) were administered. Surface electromyography data were collected. Results: Upper trapezius activity was significantly higher during the concentric phase of scapular posterior elevation exercises compared with the others (p<0.05). The serratus anterior, anterior deltoid, and infraspinatus activities were significantly higher during shoulder diagonal pattern exercises compared with the scapular diagonal pattern exercises (p<0.05). Except for the lower trapezius, muscular activities during the concentric phase were significantly greater compared with the eccentric phase (p<0.05). Conclusion: The current study suggests that the diagonal pattern of exercise may contribute to selective strengthening of the shoulder complex muscles and that the form of exercise should be tailored to the subject. It also suggests that diagonal exercises with concentric contractions tend to be more beneficial than eccentric contractions for overall muscle recruitment, but the effects vary for specific diagonal patterns.
The enhanced differentiation and activation of osteoclasts (OCs) in the inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and gout causes not only local bone erosion, but also systemic osteoporosis, leading to functional disabilities and morbidity. The induction and amplification of NFATc1, a master regulator of OC differentiation, is mainly regulated by receptor activator of NF-κB (RANK) ligand-RANK and calcium signaling which are amplified in the inflammatory milieu, as well as by inflammatory cytokines such as TNFα, IL-1β and IL-6. Moreover, the predominance of CD4+ T cell subsets, which varies depending on the condition of inflammatory diseases, can determine the fate of OC differentiation. Anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies which are critical in the pathogenesis of RA can bind to the citrullinated vimentin on the surface of OC precursors, and in turn promote OC differentiation and function via IL-8. In addition to adaptive immunity, the activation of innate immune system including the nucleotide oligomerization domain leucine rich repeat with a pyrin domain 3 inflammasome and TLRs can regulate OC maturation. The emerging perspectives about the diverse and close interactions between the immune cells and OCs in inflammatory milieu can have a significant impact on the future direction of drug development.

Extensive work has been done on investigating the inner cell pressure characteristics of sealed type Ni-MH battery in which Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni alloy is used as anode. The inner cell pressure of this type Ni-MH battery much more increases with the charge/discharge cycling than that of the other type Ni-MH battery where commercialized $AB_5$ type alloy is used as anode. The increase of inner cell pressure in the sealed type Ni/MH battery using Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni alloy system is mainly due to the accumulation of oxygen gas during charge/discharge cycling. The accumulation of oxygen gas arises mainly due to the low rate of oxygen recombination on the MH electrode surface during charge/discharge cycling. The difference of oxygen recombination rate between $AB_5$ type electrode and Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni electrode is caused by the difference of electrode reaction surface area resulting from different particle size after their activation and the difference of surface catalytic activity for oxygen recombination reaction, respectively. After EIS analysis, it is identified that the surface catalytic activity affects much more dominantly on the oxygen recombination reaction than the reaction surface area does. In order to suppress the inner cell pressure of Ni-MH battery where Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni is used as anode, it is suggested that the surface catalytic activity for oxygen recombination should be improved.

Quantitative measurement of chloride ion concentration has an important role in various fields of electrochemistry, medical science, biology, metallurgy, architecture, etc. Among them, its importance of architecture is ever-growing due to unexpected degradations of building structure. These situations are caused by corrosion of reinforced concrete (RC) structure of buildings. And chloride ions are the most powerful factors of RC structure corrosion. Therefore, precise inspection of chloride ion concentration must be required to increase the accuracy of durability monitoring. Multi-walled Carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have high chemical resistivity, large surface area and superior electrical property. Thus, it is suitable for the channels of electrical signals made by the sensor. Silver nanoparticles were added to giving the sensing property. CuBTC, one of the metal organic frameworks (MOFs), was employed as a material to improve the sensing property because of its hydrophilicity and high surface area to volume ratio. In this study, sensing element was synthesized by various chemical reaction procedures. At first, MWCNTs were functionalized with a mixture of sulfuric acid and nitric acid because of enhancement of solubility in solution and surface activation. And functionalized MWCNTs, silver nanoparticles, and CuBTC were synthesized on PTFE membrane, one by one. Electroless deposition process was performed to deposit the silver nanoparticles. CuBTC was produced by room temperature synthesis. Surface morphology and composition analysis were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was also performed to confirm the existence of sensing materials. The electrical properties of sensor were measured by semiconductor analyzer. The chloride ion sensing characteristics were confirmed with the variation of the resistance at 1 V.

There is a close relationship between the performance and the heat generation of the electronic device. Heat generation causes a significant degradation of the durability and/or efficiency of the device. It is necessary to have an effective method to release the generated heat. Based on demands of the printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing, it is necessary to develop a robust and reliable plating technique for substrates with high thermal conductivity, such as alumina ($Al_2O_3$), aluminium nitride (AlN), and silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$). In this study, the plating of metal layers on an insulating silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) ceramic substrate was developed. We formed a Pd-$TiO_2$ adhesion layer and used APTES(3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane) to form OH groups on the surface and adhere the metal layer on the insulating $Si_3N_4$ substrate. We used an electroless Ni plating without sensitization/activation process, as Pd particles were nucleated on the $TiO_2$ layer. The electrical resistivity of Ni and Cu layers is $7.27{\times}10^{-5}$ and $1.32{\times}10^{-6}ohm-cm$ by 4 point prober, respectively. The adhesion strength is 2.506 N by scratch test.

SKD 11 steel has been widely used for tools, metallic mold and die for press working because of its favorable mechanical properties such as high toughness and creep strength as well as excellent oxidation resistance. The ion nitrided tool steel containing Mo results in improvement of corrosion resistance, strength at high temperature and pitting resistance, especially in $Cl^-$ contained environment. But the Mo addition causes a disadvantage such as lower oxidation resistance at elevated temperature. In this study, several effects of ion-disadvantage on the oxidation characteristics for SKD 11 steel with various oxidation temperature were investigated. SKD 11 steels were manufactured by using vacuum furnace and solutionized for 1 hr at $1,050^{\circ}C$. Steel surface was ion nitrided at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr and 5 hr by ion nitriding equipment. ion nitrided specimen were investigated by SEM, OM and hardness tester. Oxidation was carried out by using muffle furnace in air at $500^{\circ}C,\;700^{\circ}C\;and\;900^{\circ}C$ for 1hr, respectively. Oxidation behavior of the ion nitrided specimen was investigated by SEM, EDX and surface roughness tester. The conclusions of this study are as follows: It was found that plasma nitriding for 5 hr at $500^{\circ}C$, compared with ion nitriding for 1 hr at $500^{\circ}C$, had a thick nitrided layer and produced a layer with good wear, corrosion resistance and hardness as nitriding time increased. Nitrided SKD 11 alloy for 1hr showed that wear resistance and hardness decreased, whereas surface roughness increased, compared with nitrided SKD 11 alloy for 5 hr. The oxidation surface at $900^{\circ}C$ showed a good corrosion resistance.
Thermal degradation for glass fiber-reinforced polyamide 66 composite (PA 66) with respect of thermal exposure time has been investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. As the thermal exposure time was prolonged, a slight increase in tensile strength for only initial stage and afterward, a proportional decrease of tensile strength was observed. These results can be explained by the increase of crystallinity, followed by the increase of crosslinking density, chain scission and the decrease in chain mobility, due to thermal oxidation with the exposure time. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed the increase of ketone peak and silica peak on the surface of thermally exposed PA 66. In addition, the thermal decomposition kinetics of PA 66 was analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis at three different heating rates. The relationship between activation energy and lifetime-prediction of PA 66 was investigated by several methodologies, such as statistical tool, UL 746B, Ozawa and Kissinger. The activation energy determined by thermogravimetric analysis had a relatively large value compared with that from the accelerated test. This may result in over-estimating the lifetime of PA 66. In this study, a master curve of exponential fitting has been developed to extrapolate the activation energy at various service temperatures.
Inflammatory diseases, allergic and asthmatic disorders are caused by the mediator release from the activation of the phospholipase C (PLC), phospholipase D (PLD), methyltransferase or adenylate cyclase etc. during IgG or IgE cross-linking of high affinity receptors on mast cells or basophil surface. One important enzyme activated after IgG or IgE receptor cross-linking is PLD, the enzyme which converts phosphatidylcholine (PC) to phosphatidic acid (PA). Under the hypothesis that these may be some differences in mediator release according to the difference in PLD activity, we attempted to confirm the ginseng saponin effects on the PLD activity. We examined the PLD activity during the passively sensitized mast cell activation in the presence of single component of ginsenosides $(Rc,\;Rg_1,\;Rg_2,\;Rg_3)$. We also measured the amount of mediators (histamine and leukotrienes) released by stimulating with ovalbumin (OA) or calcium ionophore (CaI), Guinea Pig lung mast cells were purified using enzyme digestion, count current elutriation, and discontinuous Percoll density gradient. In purified mast cells prelabeled with $[^3H]$ arachidonic acid or $[^3H]$ palmitic acid, PLD activity was assessed more directly by the production of labeled PEt by PLD-mediated transphosphatidylation in the presence of ethanol. Histanine release was determined by Spectrophotofluorometry, and leukotrienes by radioimmunoassay. The PLD activity during the passively sensitized mast cell activation is increased up to $3{\sim}5times$. The PLD activity during the passively sensitized mast cell activation in the presence of all ginsenosides is decreased up to $4{\sim}11$ times. $Rg_l\;and\;Rg_2$ ginsenoside pretreatment decreased histamine and leukotrienes by 50% in the OA-induced or by 40% in the Cal-induced mast cell after passively sensitization. Rc pretreatment poorly decreased histamine but leukotrienes decreased by 70% in the OA-induced or by 35% in the Cal-induced mast cell. $Rg_3$ ginsenoside pretreatment increased histamine release without challenging OA or Cal but leukotrienes decreased. These observations indicate that single unit of ginsenosldes may be an important contributor to inhibit the release of histamine and leukotrienes in the guinea pig lung mast cells, that inhibits the PLD-mediated formation of DAG evoked by mast cell activation.

15-Deoxy-${\Delta}^{12, 14}$-prostaglandin $J_2$ (15-deoxy-$PGJ_2$), a naturally occurring ligand activates the peroxisome proliferator-activated $receptor-{\gamma}(PPAR-{\gamma}$). Activation of $PPAR-{\gamma}$ has been found to induce cell differentiation such as adipose cell and macrophage. Here it was investigated whether 15-deoxy-$PGJ_2$ has neuronal cell differentiation and possible underlying molecular mechanisms. Dopaminergic differentiating PC 12 cells treated with 15-deoxy-$PGJ_2$ (0.2 to 1.6 ${\mu}M$) alone showed measurable neurite extension and expression of neurofilament, markers of cell differentiation. However much greater extent of neurite extension and expression of neurofilament was observed in the presence of NGF (50 ng/ml). In parallel with its increasing effect on the neurite extension and expression of neurofilament, 15-deoxy-$PGJ_2$ enhanced NGF-induced p38 MAP kinase expression and its phosphorylation in addition to the activation of transcription factor AP-1 in a dose dependent manner. Moreover, pretreatment of SD 203580, a specific inhibitor of p38 MAP kinase inhibited the promoting effect of 15-deoxy-$PGJ_2$(0.8 ${\mu}M$) on NGF-induced neurite extension. This inhibition correlated well with the ability of SB203580 to inhibit the enhancing effect of 15-deoxy-$PGJ_2$ on the expression of p38 MAP kinase and activation of AP-1, The promoting ability of 15-deoxy-$PGJ_2$ did not occur through $PPAR-{\gamma}$, as synthetic PPAR-${\gamma}$ agonist andantagonist did not change the neurite promoting effect of 15-deoxy-PGJ$_2$. In addition, contrast to other cells (embryonic midbrain and SK-N-MC cells), $PPAR-{\gamma}$ was not expressed in PC-12 cells. Other structure related prostaglandins, PGD$_2$ and $PGE_2$ acting via a cell surface G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) did not increase basal or NGF-induced neurite extension. Moreover, GPCR (EP and DP receptor) antagonists did not alter the promoting effect of f 5-deoxy-$PGJ_2$ on neurite extension and activation of p38 MAP kinase, suggesting that the promoting effect of 15-deoxy-$PGJ_2$ may not be mediated GPCR. These data demonstrate that activation of p38 MAP kinase in conjunction with AP-1 single pathway may be important in the promoting activity of 15-deoxy-$PGJ_2$ cells.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of 6-week sensorimotoor training on balance ability and lower limb muscle activation during gait in older adults. Methods: Twenty-four community-dwelling older adults between 65 and 90 years of age participated in this study. In the older adults of the experimental group (n=12), the sensorimotor training program was performed bare feet. General exercise was performed in the control group (n=12). Then, both groups exercised three times a week for forty minutes over a 6-week period. Balance ability was evaluated by One leg stand (OLS) test for determining the static balance and Timed Up & Go (TUG) test for determining the dynamic balance. In addition, muscle activation of the dominant lower limb tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius medialis muscles were measured by surface EMG to evaluate muscle activation during gait. Results: A significant improvement was seen in the one leg standing (OLS) time after exercise in both the sensorimotor training (SMT) group and general exercise (GE) group (p<0.05) and the change in the SMT group was greater than that in the GE group (p<0.05). A significant reduction was seen in the Timed Up & Go (TUG) test time after exercise in both the SMT group and GE group (p<0.05). Also, a significant increase was seen in muscle activation of tibialis anterior muscle after exercise in the SMT group (p<0.05), but no such significant increase was seen in the GE group (p>0.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that sensorimotor training improves the balance in older adults and has a more positive effect on muscular strength and gait. Sensorimotor training provided a variance of training environment and COG exercise of the body is thought to be a more effective exercise program that improves balance and gait ability in older adults.
