Images taken by geostationary satellite may be used to estimate solar irradiance fluxes at earth's surface. It is based on the empirical correlation between a satellite derived cloud index and the irradiance at the ground. For the validation, estimated solar radiation fluxes are compared with observed solar radiation fluxes at 16 sites over the Korean peninsular from January 1982 to December 2007. Estimated solar radiation fluxes show reliable results for estimating the global radiation with average deviation of -7.58 to +3.8% from the measured values and the yearly averaged horizontal global insolation of Korean peninsula was turned out to be $3.59kW/m^2/day$.
Since The measured solar radiation incident on tilted surfaces by all directions has been widely used as important solar radiation data in installing solar flat-plate collectors. To maximize the incident beam radiation, the slope, which is the angle between the plane of the surface in question and the horizontal, and the solar azimuth angles are needed for these solar thermal systems. This is because the performance of the solar thermal system is much affected by angle and direction of incident rays. Recognizing those factors mentioned above are of importance, actual experiment has been performed in this research to obtain the angle of inclination with which the maximum incident rays can be absorbed. The results obtained in this research could be used in installing optimal solar flat-plate collectors.

This paper is aimed at the development of a software that predicts the surface temperature profiles of three-dimensional objects on the ground by considering the spectral solar radiation through the atmosphere. The spectral solar radiation through the atmosphere is modeled by using the well-known LOWTRAN7 code which analyzes the detailed spectral transmission characteristics by considering the atmospheric gas layers. In this paper, the transient temperature distribution over a cylinder is calculated by using the semi-implicit method. The spectral radiative surface properties such as the absorptivity and emissivity of the objects are used to model the effects of the solar irradiation and the surface emission. Both the detailed spectral modeling and the simple total modeling for the solar radiation absorption show fairly good agreement with each other by showing less than 3% difference in surface temperature.

The Knowledge of the solar radiation components are essential for modeling many solar energy systems. This is particularly the case for applications that concentrate the incident energy to attain high thermodynamic efficiency achievable only at the higher temperatures. In order to estimate the performance of concentrating thermal systems, it is necessary to know the intensity of the beam radiation, as only this component can be concentrated. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has began collecting solar radiation component data since August, 2002. KIER's component data will be extensively used by concentrating system users or designers as well as by research institutes. The Result of analysis shows that the annual-average daily diffuse radiation on the horizontal surface is $1,458cal/m^2$ and daily direct radiation on the horizontal surface is $1,632cal/m^2$ for all over the 16 areas in Korea.

The purpose of this study was to predict road surface temperature using high-resolution solar radiation data. The road surface temperature prediction model (RSTPM) was applied to predict road surface temperature; this model was developed based on the heat-balance method. In addition, using SOLWEIG (SOlar and LongWave Environmental Irradiance Geometry-model), the shadow patterns caused by the terrain effects were analyzed, and high-resolution solar radiation data with 10 m spatial resolution were calculated. To increase the accuracy of the shadow patterns and solar radiation, the day that was modeled had minimal effects from fog, clouds, and precipitation. As a result, shadow areas lasted for a long time at the entrance and exit of a tunnel, and in a high-altitude area. Furthermore, solar radiation clearly decreased in areas affected by shadows, which was reflected in the predicted road surface temperatures. It was confirmed that the road surface temperature should be high at topographically open points and relatively low at higher altitude points. The results of this study could be used to forecast the freezing of sections of road surfaces in winter, and to inform decision making by road managers and drivers.
The surface solar radiation is an important indicators for climate and agricultural research over the Earth system. For the climate and agricultural research, long-term meteorological data and accurate measured data are needed. The daily solar radiation from Jan. 2001 to Dec. 2010 have been employed in this study analyze atmospheric transmissivity for Chupungryeong. The corresponding daily value of atmospheric transmissivity is calculated for Chupungryeong meteorological data. In this paper, relationship analysis of daily solar radiation and atmospheric transmissivity is presented. It shows that atmospheric transmissivity over late December peaked in the 2000s, substantially decreased from the early-January, and changed little after that in summer. Reduction of solar radiation caused a reduction of more than 0.3 in atmospheric transmissivity during July to August. It was concluded that the atmospheric transmissivity could be very useful for evaluating solar radiation. Atmospheric transmissivity approach is suitable for daily-term simulation studies and useful for computing solar radiation.

The objective of this study is to clarify the effect of thermal radiation environments on human thermal comfort, depending on different canyon types and surface materials on the human thermal comfort in a housing complex in Pohang city, Korea. For this purpose, the operative temperature and new effective temperature were calculated based on the modified mean radiant temperature of canyon models variated by the existence of direct radiation existence, surface materials, and the width and length of the street spaces in a housing complex. These indices for the canyon have been calculated from the meteorological data of Pohang city, which include air temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, global solar radiation and cloud. And the monthly averages of these climate factors measured at noon have been used. The results are as follows: (1) It is revealed that the short-wave radiosity reached the human body is affected by direct solar radiation and surface materials, and the long-wave radiosity by canyon types. (2) The existence of direct solar radiation, the kinds of surface materials and canyon types affect operative temperature($OT_n$) and new effective temperature($ET^*{_n}$). (3) The analysis of the human heat balance in the canyon indicates that the influence of radiation on human body is marc likely to be affected by the existence of direct solar radiation on human model.

The solar energy are an infinite source of energy and a clean energy without secondary pollution. The global solar energy reaching the earth's surface can be calculated easily according to the change of latitude, altitude, and sloped surface depending on the amount of the actual state of the atmosphere and clouds. The high-resolution solar-meteorological resource map with 1km resolution was developed in 2011 based on GWNU (Gangneung-Wonju National University) solar radiation model with complex terrain. The very high resolution solar energy map can be calculated and analyzed in Seoul and Eunpyung with topological effect using by 1km solar-meteorological resources map, respectively. Seoul DEM (Digital Elevation Model) have 10m resolution from NGII (National Geographic Information Institute) and Eunpyeong new town DSM (Digital Surface Model) have 1m spatial resolution from lidar observations. The solar energy have small differences according to the local mountainous terrain and residential area. The maximum bias have up to 20% and 16% in Seoul and Eunpyung new town, respectively. Small differences are that limited area with resolutions. As a result, the solar energy can calculate precisely using solar radiation model with topological effect by digital elevation data and its results can be used as the basis data for the photovoltaic and solar thermal generation.

Since the solar energy resource is the main input for sizing any solar photovoltaic system and solar thermal power system, it is essential to utilize the solar radiation data as a application and development of solar energy system increase. It will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has begun collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 at 16 different locations in Korea and for the more detailed analysis, Images taken by geostationary satellite may be used to estimate solar irradiance fluxes at earth's surface. It is based on the empirical correlation between a satellite derived cloud index and the irradiance at the ground. From the results, the measured data has been collected at 16 different stations and estimated using satellite at 23 different stations over the South Korea from 1982 to 2009. The Result of analysis shows that the annual-average daily global radiation on the horizontal surface is $3.56kWh/m^2/day$.
