A new physical/statistical diagnostic downscale model has been developed for use to improve near-surface air temperature forecasts. The model includes a series of physical and statistical correction methods that account for un-resolved topographic and land-use effects as well as statistical bias errors in a low-resolution atmospheric model. Operational temperature forecasts of the Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS) were downscaled at 100 m resolution for three months, which were used to validate the model's physical and statistical correction methods and to compare its performance with the forecasts of the Korea Meteorological Administration Post-processing (KMAP) system. The validation results showed positive impacts of the un-resolved topographic and urban effects (topographic height correction, valley cold air pool effect, mountain internal boundary layer formation effect, urban land-use effect) in complex terrain areas. In addition, the statistical bias correction of the LDAPS model were efficient in reducing forecast errors of the near-surface temperatures. The new high-resolution downscale model showed better agreement against Korean 584 meteorological monitoring stations than the KMAP, supporting the importance of the new physical and statistical correction methods. The new physical/statistical diagnostic downscale model can be a useful tool in improving near-surface temperature forecasts and diagnostics over complex terrain areas.

Based on in-situ monitoring data produced by National Institute of Meteorological Sciences, we evaluated the performance of Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES) on the surface energy balance for rice-paddy and cropland in Korea with the operational ancillary data used for Unified Model (UM) Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS) (CTL) and the high-resolution ancillary data from external sources (EXP). For these experiments, we employed the one-year (March 2015~February 2016) observations of eddy-covariance fluxes and soil moisture contents from a double-cropping rice-paddy in BoSeong and a cropland in AnDong. On the rice-paddy site the model performed better in the CTL experiment except for the sensible heat flux, and the latent heat flux was underestimated in both of experiments which can be inferred that the model represents flood-irrigated surface poorly. On the cropland site the model performance of the EXP experiment was worse than that of CTL experiment related to unrealistic surface type fractions. The pattern of the modeled soil moisture was similar to the observation but more variable in time. Our results shed a light on that 1) the improvement of land scheme for the flood-irrigated rice-paddy and 2) the construction of appropriate high-resolution ancillary data should be considered in the future research.
A realistic surface model is presented for prediction of various surface phenomena such as polymer deposition, suppression and sputtering as a function of incidence ion energy in high density fluorocarbon plasmas. This model followed ion enhanced etching model using the "well-mixed" or continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) assumption to the surface reaction zone. In this work, we suggested ion enhanced polymer formation and decomposition mechanisms that can capture $SiO_2$ etching through a steady-state polymer film on $SiO_2$ under the suppression regime. These mechanisms were derived based on experimental data and molecular dynamic simulation results from literatures. The model coefficients are obtained from fits to available beam and plasma experimental data. In order to show validity of our model, we compared the model results to high density fluorocarbon plasma etching data.

The proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) method is an effective way of measuring the regurgitant blood flow rate in the mitral valve. This method defines the modelling required to describe the geometry of the isotach of the PISA. In the normal PISA flow model, the flow rate is calculated assuming that the surface of the isotach is either hemispherical or non-hemispherical numerically. However, this paper evaluated the estimate flow rate using a direct surface subdivision flow model based on the height field after isotach extraction using a region-based scheme. To validate the proposed method, the various PISA flow models were compared using pusatile color Doppler images with flow rates ranging from $30\;cm^3/sec\;to\;60\;cm^3/sec$ flow rate. Whereas the hemispherical flow model had a mean value of $29\;cm^3/sec$ and underestimated the measured flow rate by 35%, the proposed model and non-hemispherical model produced a c;ame mean value of $45\;cm^3/sec$, moreover, both flow models produced a similar pulsatile flow rate.
A series of model tests were conducted in order to observe the failure surface generated around a diaphragm wall embedded in ground with high groundwater table. Images of the soil deformation around the model wall were captured during the test. The configuration of the failure surface in soil around the model wall could be obtained from analyzing the image of the soil deformation. Based on the configuration of the failure surface observed in the model test, an analytical approach was proposed to predict the uplift capacity of a diaphragm wall installed in ground. The analytical approach considers not only the wall properties such as length, thickness and surface roughness of diaphragm walls but also the soil strength properties such as the internal friction angle and the cohesion of soil. The predicted uplift capacity of a diaphragm wall shows a good agreement with the experimental one measured in the model test.

In this research, a procedure to improve the feasibility of design space is proposed by an approximation model. The Chebyshev Inequality is used as the criterion of modification of design space. This procedure is applied to the aero-elastic transonic wing design problem and the feasibility of the design space is greatly improved. Also the optimization results are improved by appling this procedure. That is, the probability to satisfy all imposed constraints is increased and the better design points are included in design space after this procedure. And the use of both a second-order response surface model and the Kriging model is investigated and compared in accuracy, efficiency, and robustness as approximation models in this procedure for different sampling methods. As a result, the second-order response surface model is more appropriate for our application than the Kriging model, because it is linear enough to be fitted well by the response surface model.
Dental caries is the most common oral disease. There are many factors contributing to its development, but complete understanding and prevention are not fully known. However, it is possible to remineralize the early enamel curious lesion by fluoride containing remineralization solution. Recently the pH-cycling model has been used to examine the effect of fluoride solution on remineralization of artificial caries in vitro as it can closely simulate the conditions encountered in vivo within a carefully controlled environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the remineralizing effects of supersaturated buffer solutions under pH-cycling model. The specimen with 3mm-diameter was made using mature bovine incisors which has no caries and has sound enamel surface. Early curious lesions were produced by suspending each specimens into demineralization solution at pH 5.0 for 33 hours and the specimen whose surface hardness value ranged from 25 to 45 VHN were used. The pH cycling treatment regimen consisted of 5 min soaks of three treatment solutions four times per days for 15 days and the continuous cycling of demineralization and remineralization were carried out for 15 days. Following the pH-cycling treatment regimen, the specimens' surface microhardness were measured by the Vickers hardness test (VHN) and analyzed by ANOVA and Duncan's multiple-range test. 1. The surface microhardness value of supersaturated solution, Senstime, and Gagline groups were increased after pH cycling, and that of supersaturated solution was significantly Increased compared to saline group(P<0.05). 2. The surface remineralization effect of fluoride containing solutions was accelerated by saliva under pH-cycling mode 3. The pH cycling model was considered appropriate to mimic the intra-oral pH changes when evaluating demineralization and remineralization in vitro. Under the results of above study, salivary remineralization effect can be improved by fluoride containing remineralization solution. The pH-cycling model was considered appropriate to mimic the intra-oral pH changes when evaluating demineralization and remineralization in vitro.
Soil erosion can cause scouring and failures of underwater structures, therefore, various soil improvement techniques are used to increase the soil erosion resistance. The microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) method is proposed to increase the erosion resistance, however, there are only limited experimental and numerical studies on the use of MICP treatment for improvement of surface erosion resistance. Therefore, this study investigates the improvement in surface erosion resistance of sands by MICP through laboratory experiments and numerical modeling. The surface erosion behaviors of coarse sands with various calcium carbonate contents were first investigated via the erosion function apparatus (EFA). The test results showed that MICP treatment increased the overall erosion resistance, and the contribution of the precipitated calcium carbonate to the erosion resistance and critical shear stress was quantified in relation to the calcium carbonate contents. Further, these surface erosion processes occurring in the EFA test were simulated through the coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM) with the cohesion bonding model to reflect the mineral precipitation effect. The simulation results were compared with the experimental results, and the developed CFD-DEM model with the cohesion bonding model well predicted the critical shear stress of MICP-treated sand. This work demonstrates that the MICP treatment is effective in improving soil erosion resistance, and the coupled CFD-DEM with a bonding model is a useful and promising tool to analyze the soil erosion behavior for MICP-treated sand at a particle scale.

The effects of the gravity field and the free surface on the cavity shape and the drag are investigated through a numerical analysis for the steady supercavitating flow past a simple two-dimensional body underneath the free surface. The continuity and the RANS equations are numerically solved for an incompressible fluid using a $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model and a mixture fluid model has been applied for calculating the multiphase flow of air, water and vapor using the method of volume of fluid and the Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model. Numerical solutions have been obtained for the supercavitating flow about a two-dimensional $30^{\circ}$ wedge in wide range of depths of submergence and inflow velocities. The results are presented for the cavity shape, especially the length and the width, and the drag of the wedge in comparison with those of the case for the infinite fluid flow neglecting the gravity and the free surface. The influences of the gravity field and the free surface on the aforementioned quantities are discussed. The length and the width of the supercavity are reduced and the centerline of the cavity rises toward the free surface due to the effects of the gravity field and the free surface. The drag coefficient of the wedge, however, is about the same except for shallow depths of submergence. As the supercavitating wedge is approaching very close to the free surface, it is found the length and the width of a cavity are shorten even though the cavitation number is reduced. Also the present result suggests that, under the influence of the gravity field and the free surface, the length of the supercavity for a certain cavitation number varies and moreover is proportional to the inverse of the submergence depth Froude number.
The classical continuum theory-based thin film model is independent of their size and the surface effect can be ignored. But the surface to bulk ratio becomes very large in nano-size structures such as nano film, nano wire and nano beam. In this case, surface effect plays an important role and its contribution of the surface effect must be considered. Molecular dynamics simulation has been a conventional way to analyze these ultra-thin structures but structures in the range between submicro and micro are difficult to analyze by classical molecular dynamics due to the restriction of computing resources and time. Therefore, in present study, the continuum-based method is considered to predict the overall physical and mechanical properties of the structures in nano-scale, especially, for the thin-film. The proposed continuum based-thin plate finite element is efficient and reliable for the prediction of nano-scale film behavior.
