To evaluate the effects of feeding linseed oil or/and sunflower oil mixed with fish oil on milk yield, milk composition and fatty acid (FA) profiles of dairy cows fed a high-concentrate diet, 24 crossbred primiparous lactating dairy cows in early lactation were assigned to a completely randomized design experiment. All cows were fed a high-concentrate basal diet and 0.38 kg dry matter (DM) molasses per day. Treatments were composed of a basal diet without oil supplement (Control), or diets of (DM basis) 3% linseed and fish oils (1:1, w/w, LSO-FO), or 3% sunflower and fish oils (1:1, w/w, SFO-FO), or 3% mixture (1:1:1, w/w) of linseed, sunflower, and fish oils (MIX-O). The animals fed SFO-FO had a 13.12% decrease in total dry matter intake compared with the control diet (p<0.05). No significant change was detected for milk yield; however, the animals fed the diet supplemented with SFO-FO showed a depressed milk fat yield and concentration by 35.42% and 27.20%, respectively, compared to those fed the control diet (p<0.05). Milk c9, t11-conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) proportion increased by 198.11% in the LSO-FO group relative to the control group (p<0.01). Milk C18:3n-3 (ALA) proportion was enhanced by 227.27% supplementing with LSO-FO relative to the control group (p<0.01). The proportions of milk docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were significantly increased (p<0.01) in the cows fed LSO-FO (0.38%) and MIX-O (0.23%) compared to the control group (0.01%). Dietary inclusion of LSO-FO mainly increased milk c9, t11-CLA, ALA, DHA, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), whereas feeding MIX-O improved preformed FA and unsaturated fatty acids (UFA). While the lowest n-6/n-3 ratio was found in the LSO-FO, the decreased atherogenecity index (AI) and thrombogenicity index (TI) seemed to be more extent in the MIX-O. Therefore, to maximize milk c9, t11-CLA, ALA, DHA, and n-3 PUFA and to minimize milk n-6/n-3 ratio, AI and TI, an ideal supplement would appear to be either LSO-FO or MIX-O.
Carrots were deep fat fried with sunflower oil (SO), palm oil (PO), and a blend of palm and sunflower oils (PSO with PO:SO as 2:8 or 4:6) at different temperatures (180 and 190℃) and lengths of time (0.5 to 2.5 min). The quality of deep fat fried carrots was determined by the moisture and fat content, color, conjugated dienoic acid (CDA), hydroperoxide, p-anisidine value, and fatty acid composition. The moisture content of fried carrots decreased with increasing frying time, while the fat content increased. The CDA and p-anisidine values of carrots fried with SO were higher than those fried with PO because of greater unsaturated fatty acids content in SO. PSO was a better choice than SO or PO for deep fat frying carrots in the aspects of oxidative stability and ratio of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids. These results indicate that the quality of deep fat fried carrots depends on the type of oil and frying temperature used, as well as the length of time.

Fatty acid composition of commercial oil were analyzed with gas liquid chromatography. Sesame, perilla, rice bran, sunflower, and soy-bean oil were obtained from the whole sale store of edible oil in market. The fatty acids were methylated with Na-methylate. The fatty acid methylester was charged to the gas liquid chromatography. Sesame were composed of myristic, palmitic, stearic. linoleic acid, and trace of linolenic acid. Rice bran, and soy-bean oil were composed of myristic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acid. Peilla oil was composed of palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acid. Sunflower oil was composed of palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic acid.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of plant oils or egg white powder and wheat fiber on the quality properties of hamburger patties. Beef patties were manufactured from the control oil (tallow, 10%), CP (canola oil, 10%), OP (olive oil, 10%), COP (corn oil, 10%), and SP (sunflower oil, 10%). The patties that contained plant oils had lower cooking loss than the control patties. The CIE $L^{\ast}$-values before cooking were highest for the SP treatments and lowest for the control patties. In terms of the fatty acid composition, the plant oil treatments, regardless of cooking, had higher monounsaturated/saturated fatty acid (M/S) ratios than the control patties, but had lower trans fatty acid contents than the control samples. In the sensory evaluations, the color and overall acceptability were more highly evaluated in the control patties than in the patties that contained plant oils.
Metal ions exist in seawater, groundwater and industrial wastewaters. These source waters can be recycled if their concentrations are reduced. A number of processes can be applied for this purpose. Liquid-liquid extraction is one of the promising methods. In this paper, experimental results are presented on the removal of Cr(VI) using Aliquat-336, a reactive carrier, in sunflower oil (a non-toxic solvent). The performance of this new system is compared with those of kerosene (a toxic solvent). The extent of removal of Cr(VI) from samples with high and low concentrations are presented. The process was upgraded to a bench-scale module that can selectively remove about 50-90% Cr(VI) from samples of groundwater. Thus this process can produce water within the acceptable range for recycling and for use in secondary purposes such as irrigation.
An experiment was conducted to compare the effect of the same amount of 18:2 offered either as 18:2n-6 or as a mixture of unprotected 18:2c9t11 and 18:2t10c12 on feed intake, milk components as well as plasma and milk fatty acid profile. Fifteen cows were blocked by milk yield and milk fat percentage and within block assigned randomly to 1 of 3 treatments (n = 5). Each cow passed a 12-d adjustment period (AP) on a basal diet. After the AP cows received 1 of 3 supplements during an 18-d experimental period (EP). The supplements contained either 1.0 kg ground sunflower seeds (S), 0.5 kg conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)-oil (C) or 0.75 kg of a mixture of ground sunflower seeds and CLA-oil (2:1; SC). All 3 supplements contained the same amount of 18:2 either as CLA (${\Sigma}18$:2c9t11+18:2t10c12, 1:1) or as 18:2c9c12. During the last 2 d of AP and the last 4 d of EP feed intake and milk yield were recorded daily and milk samples were collected at each milking. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein on d 11 of AP and d 15 and 18 of EP. The 18:2 intake increased in all treatments from AP to EP. Regardless of the amount of supplemented CLA, the milk fat percentage decreased by 2.35 and 2.10%-units in treatment C and SC, respectively, whereas in the treatment S the decrease was with 0.99%-unit less pronounced. Thus, C and SC cows excreted daily a lower amount of milk fat than S cows. The concentration of trans 18:1 in the plasma and the milk increased from AP to EP and increased with increasing dietary CLA supply. While the concentration of 18:2c9t11 and 18:2t10c12 in the plasma and that of 18:2t10c12 in the milk paralleled dietary supply, the level of 18:2c9t11 in the milk was similar in C and CS but still lower in S. Although the dietary concentration of CLA was highest in treatment C, the partial replacement of CLA by sunflower seeds had a similar inhibitory effect on milk fat synthesis. Comparable 18:2c9t11 levels in the milk in both CLA treatments implies that this isomer is subjected to greater biohydrogenation with increasing supply than 18:2t10c12. The fact that unprotected 18:2t10c12 escaped biohydrogenation in sufficient amounts to affect milk fat synthesis reveals opportunities to develop feeding strategies where reduced milk fat production is desirable or required by the metabolic state of the cow.
Despite the extensive study of protein effect to man and domestic animals, protein effect of sunflower seed oil cake to the growth and value of erythrocyte in rats is still remained to be investigated. This study is to investigate the effect of protein of sunflower seed oil cake to the rat growth and value of erythrocyte as well as the liver weight, heart, kidneys and spleen of rats. Sixty to seventy-days-old, male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 50-60g, were used in this experiment and 36 rats allotted to 4 groups: standard, 30% cake, 20% cake and low protein. The standard group was fed for 7 weeks on the ration supplemented with 17% casein, 30% and 20% cake groups with sunflower seed oil cake by 30% and 20%, respectively, and low protein group without any supplementation. To observe value of erythrocyte, blood was taken from heart. Value of erythrocyte, hemoglobin and hematocrit value were determined by usual method and oxygen consumption by the method of Watts and Gourley. The result of this experiment suggests that it is recommendable to supplement deficient amino acids in animal.

The conversion characteristics and fuel properties for producing biodiesel (BD) by blending beef-tallow, an animal waste resource with a high-saturated fatty acid content, and sunflower-oil, a vegetable oil with a high-unsaturated fatty acid content, were investigated. For this investigation, the effects of the control factors, such as the oil-blend ratio and methanol-to-oil molar ratio, on the fatty acid methyl ester and BD production yield were also investigated. The kinematic viscosity reduction effects of BD using heating and ultrasonic irradiation were verified, and the optimal temperature of each BD-diesel fuel blend for reducing the kinematic viscosity was derived using the correlation equation. As a result, the optimal conditions for producing blended biodiesel were verified to be TASU7 and a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 10:1. The analysis results of the fuel properties of TASU7 satisfied the BD quality standard; hence, the viability of BD blended with waste tallow as fuel was verified. The experimental results on the kinematic viscosity reduction showed that heating is more effective in reducing the kinematic viscosity because it took less time than ultrasonic irradiation, and the equipment was cheaper and more straightforward than the ultrasonic irradiation method.

Sunflower oil (SO), canola oil (CO) and frying oil (FO) were used as edible oils in this study. According to the frying number, the extracted oils from French fried potatoes were used as experimental samples. To investigate the relationship between the change of fatty acid composition and the stability of the lipid oxidation during frying, the changes of fatty acid composition and the degree of the lipid oxidation of samples were examined. Acid values and peroxide values were evaluated as the degree of lipid oxidation. The acid values of CO and FO were increased with the frying times. The increased acid values of CO and FO were 0.20 and 0.17 on the basis of initial value at 30 times, respectively, but the acid value of SO was lower than those of CO and FO. The peroxide values of the samples were not increased uniformly with the frying number. As the number of frying times was increased, the fatty acid composition of SO and FO were changed. Namely, the oleic acid composition was decreased, whereas the linoleic acid composition was increased with the number of frying times. The benzo(a)pyrene contents of the extracted oils from French fried potatoes did not change regularly as the frying times was increased.
By using the existing caustic refining system with a minimum modification and by using a combination of various emulsifiers(0.2 % sodium hexametaphosphate. 0.05 % sodium lauryl sulfate and 0.001 % dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate), a new economical dewaxing process for sunflower seed oil was developed in order to reduce the cost of the dewaxing process. The results indicate that the waxes can be removed satisfactorily from the sunflower seed oil by emulsifying. batchwise or continuously, the oil with the aqueous surfactant solution, followed by centrifugation at ambient temperatures $(16{\sim}27^{\circ}C)$. Dewaxing loss for the batch process was satisfactory for both low wax-and high wax-crude oil, whereas dewaxing loss for the continuous process needs to be improved. The results indicate that initial level of wax content (low wax vs. high wax) did not affect the loss for batch process (0.82 % vs. 0.62 %), but affected the loss for continuous processes, regardless of the type of mixing mode (2.28 % and 5.68 % for low wax-and high wax-oil, respectively). It was also noted that the type of mixing mode (centactor vs. static mixer) for the continuous process affected the loss, regardless of the wax content (5.2 % and 2.8 % for contactor and static mixer, respectively).
