The aim of this study was to develop an analytical method for sulfonamide antibiotics (sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfathiazole) and their metabolites ($N^4$-acetylsulfadiazine, $N^4$-acetylsulfamerazine, $N^4$-acetylsulfamethazine, $N^4$-acetylsulfamethoxazole, sulfamethoxazole-$N^1$-glucuronide) in environmental samples. The solid phase extraction (SPE) with LC/ESI-MS/MS have been used for the analysis of target compounds, and the recoveries of SPE clean-up were at the range of 12-94% for C18 cartridge, 60-95% for HLB cartridge, 25-123% for MCX cartridge, and 70-90% for tandem HLB/MCX. By established method, detection limit, recovery, and relative standard deviation were 0.001~0.187 ng/mL, 66~115%, and 5~17%, respectively. This method was effective and sensitive to use for the simultaneous determination of sulfonamide antibiotics and their metabolites in environmental samples. Four sulfonamide antibiotics were detected at the range of 0.008~2.153 ng/mL. For metabolites, only $N^4$-acetylsulfamethoxazole was detected, but the concentration was under the MDL level.

Antibiotics are biologically active substances and commonly used for therapeutic treatment of infectious disease in humans and for treating and protecting the health of animals. In recent years, antibiotics have attracted worldwide attention because of their side effects on the environment. Consequently, efforts have been made to monitor the residual of antibiotics in the environment. This study tested the mobility of tetracyclines and sulfonamides in soil and leachate through column experiments. The three tetracycline antibiotics showed higher mass recovery rates in all kinds of soils(28.00~44.11%) than in leachate(10.54~27.43%). This seems attributable to the high adsorption coefficient values($K_d$) of tetracyclines representing strong and active adsorbability to organic and mineral phases in soil, ending up relatively small amount being detected in surface water. By contrast, the sulfonamides(sulfamethazine and sulfathiazole) showed higher mass recovery rates in leachate(23.19~26.20%) compared to in soil(10.41~14.21%) due to lower adsorption coefficient values and higher mobility of sulfonamides, enabling easier movement to surface water through the runoff in the environment.
While veterinary antibiotics are used only in a part of the dose administered, the rest are excreted as urine or feces. Residual antibiotics enter the adjacent agricultural environments by spraying manure-based composts on farmlands and lead to secondary pollution. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the technique for post management such as regulatory levels of antibiotics in the agricultural environments. This study was conducted to compare by different matrices the amount of residual antibiotics such as tetracyclines and sulfonamides, which are known to be frequently used in Korea and to practice risk assessment by different antibiotics in soils before and after application of composts. Pre-treatment with modified typical method using buffer and solid phase extraction showed the recovery of composts and soils was more than 70% at ppb level and the limits of detection were 0.13-0.46 and 0.05-0.25 ㎍/kg, respectively. Analysis of manure-based composts revealed concentrations from 5.38 to 196.0 ㎍/kg for tetracyclines, from below the detection of limit (BDL) to 259.0 ㎍/kg for sulfonamides. In case of agricultural soils, residual concentrations of selected veterinary antibiotics were ranged 0.30-53.3 ㎍/kg, BDL-4.16 ㎍/kg respectively and the concentration level of tetracyclines, which had higher soil distribution coefficient (Kd) values, was higher than that of sulfonamides. There was a difference in human risk assessment by different antibiotics in soil before and after application of composts. But, it was indicated that detection values of all of 5 antibiotics were very safe on the basis that Hazard Quotient was safe below 1.
Antibiotics susceptibilities of Staphylococci were tested to get useful data for prevention food contamination and treatment of food poisoning. Tested were colony counts, isolation of Staphylococci, identification for the Staphylococcus aureus and resistant patterns to antimcrobial agents. The colonies and Staphylococci isolated from the atmosphere of 37 home kitchens in the morning (07:00-08:00) on Nov. 19, 1977 in Busan. The findings are as follows: 1. The average of colony counts was shown to be 9.6 ranging from 47 to 1 at mean temperature of 18$\circ$C (the highest 21$\circ$C, the lowest 15$\circ$C) 2. Out of total 37 kitchens, 18 Staphylococci were isolated from 15 kitchens with 40.5 per cent, and 4 Staphylococcus aureus were identified with 22.2 per cent from 18 Staphylococci. 3. Isolated Staphylococci were resistant to penicillin(100%), dihydrostreptomycin(93.3%), tetracycline (93.3%) and oleandomycin(66.6%), while the strains were sensitive to sulfonamide(88.6%) and colistin(83.3%). 4. Staphylococcus aureus identified were resistant to dihydrostreptomycin, penicillin and tetracycline, while the strains were sensitive to sulfonamide and colistin.

Dual-action agents are unique chemical entities comprised of two different types of antibacterial compounds covalently linked together in a single molecule in such a way that both components are able to exert their bactericidal properties. Crosslinked sulfadiazine-sulfacetamide such as antibiotics synthesized by crosslingking reaction such as glutaraldehyde. These structures of the compounds were confirmed by IR, NMR. 4 strains of Gram(+) and Gram(-) revealed effective susceptibility to synthetic crosslinked sulfadiazine-sulfacetamide.
This survey was carried out to detect the residual antibiotics and sulfonamides in emergency slaughtered cattle(n=265) from slaughter houses in Kyeonggi province by EEC 4-plates method, Charm II and HPLC. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. Antimicrobial substances were detected from 24 samples(9.1%) by EEC 4-plates method and the detection ratio were highest in summer(13.8%). 2. Twenty-two of the 24 positive samples were classified as sulfonamide(34.4%), TCs(31.3%), $\beta$-lactam(23.5%) and aminoglycoside(9.3%) by Charm II test. 13(59.1%) of the 22 samples contained single agent and 9 samples(40.9%) contained 2 or more agents. 3. Oxytetracycline(27.3%), penicillin G (27.3%) and sulfathiazole(18.2%) were detected in 20 from 22 samples by the HPLC and Charm II test. 4. The residual concentration of oxytetracycline, penicillin G and sulfonamide were 0.29~9.30 ppm, 0.05~9.58 ppm and 0.04~7.59 ppm, respectively and 19 samples(7.2%) were exceeded tolerance levels.
This survey was carried out to detect the residual antibiotics in muscles of slaughter cattle from slaughter houses in Seoul from 1991 to 1998 using by EEC-4-plate method. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. Residual materials were detected in 402 samples(3.12%) by EEC-4-plate method. The detection ratios were highest in 1995 (9.51%), autumn (39.8%), Kyeonggi province (54.2%), Holestain(60.4%) and male(50.7%). 2. Residual antibiotics for 18 samples were classified as TCs(72.2%), sulfonamides(38.8% ) and $\beta$-lactams(5.5%) by HPLC 3. The residual concentration of oxytetracycline, sulfonamide and $\beta$-lactams were 0.34~15.93ppm, 0.17~1.18ppm and 0.06ppm, respectively.
Overuse of veterinary antibiotics threats public health and surrounding environment due to the occurrence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibiotic's concentrations of tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), and oxytetracycline (OTC) in a tetracycline group (TCs), sulfamethazine (SMT), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and sulfathiazole (STZ) in a sulfonamide group, lasalocid (LSL), monensin (MNS), and salinomycin (SLM) in a ionophore (IPs), and tylosin (TYL) in a macrolide (MLs) group from soil, water, and sediment samples adjacent to a cattle manure composting facility. For all samples of soil, water, and sediment, the highest concentrations were detected in TCs among the tested antibiotics because of its higher annual consumption in veterinary farms, Korea and its higher cohesiveness with divalent or trivalent cations in soil. Moreover, the concentrations of residual antibiotics in September were generally higher than in June because of heavier rainfall in June. We suggest that continual monitoring and developing guideline of antibiotics are needed to control residual antibiotics in the environment.

The removal of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) by activated carbon was investigated by using granular activated carbon (GAC) tests and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The GAC absorption tests show the removal efficiency of 68.4~90.7% and 99.0~99.9% in 1 and 24 hours, respectively. In both GAC tests, the removal efficiency of sulfamethazine (SMZ) was the highest followed by those of sulfathiazole (STZ) and sulfamethoxazole (SMTZ): SMZ > STZ > SMTZ. In DFT adsorption simulations, we found that the 4-aminobenzenesulfonamide parts of SMZ and STZ and the 3-methyl-1,2-oxazol-5-amine part of SMTZ are preferentially adsorbed on the edges of graphene model, provided that the adsorbates keep their structures without dissociation upon adsorption process. The adsorption energies of SMZ, STZ, and SMTZ are -4.91, -4.64, and -4.62 eV, respectively. This adsorption strength (SMZ > STZ > STMZ) agrees with the trend of the removal efficiency of SAs by GAC. In addition, dissociative adsorption configurations of SAs are discussed.

In the present study, we evaluated the efficiency of the drinking water treatment unit processes controlled by targeting high pharmaceutical compounds that are likely to be released into the water supply. In the coagulation process, the removal rate of sulfonamide, an antibiotic, amounted to 22.6~42.1 %, that of naproxen to 28.2 %, and that of acetaminophen to 20 %. Trimethoprim has demonstrated a low removal rate (4.4 %), while the removal rate of erythromycin was 2.4 %; aspirin was not removed at all. When applying a mixture of chlorination and the coagulation process, the removal rate was increased with increasing the chlorine dosage. When the chlorine injection with the concentration of 3 mg/L was applied, sulfonamide antibiotics, acetaminophen and naproxen, were completely removed. Trimethoprim exhibited a high removal efficiency of ca. 98%, while the removal efficiency of erythromycin was about 55 %; at the same time, aspirin showed a lower removal ratio (ca. 10 %). When applying the powdered activated carbon adsorption process, the removal rate was increased with increase of the concentration of the powder activated carbon injection. Sulfonamide antibiotics showed about 18~50 % removal efficiency in the 1 mg/L, the removal rate was increased by at least 80 % in 25 mg/L. The evaluation results of the titration injection concentration of chlorine treatment and adsorption, coagulation process for the efficient processing of the remaining pharmaceutical compounds in the water treatment process, when applying the chlorine 3 mg/L, powdered activated carbon 10 mg/L and coagulant 15 mg/L were removed more than 90 %.
