  • This paper describes the investigation into the actual condition of electrical equipments installation and management for establishing the countermeasures against the electric shock in submerged underground. The investigation was carried out for 27 underground premises in conurbation including Seoul, and potential of the exposed electrical equipments negatively affecting on human safety when disaster occurs was measured. The objects to which measurement was carried out were as follows; electrical source; advertising lighting; power equipment. As a result, it was confirmed that potentials more than 230[V] were induced in some equipments. In addition, the electrical equipments installed in most conventional underground premises were left unmanaged.

  • This paper describes the safety assessment algorithm applied for the underground electrical utilities submerged due to flooding. In implementing the algorithm, several factors pertaining to utility safety were introduced into the process flow, and safety weight was given to each factor. It is considered that this algorithm can ensure the safety of electrical utilities installed underground when they are submerged.

  • Submerged floating tunnels must be connected to the ground to connect continents. The displacement imbalance at the shore connection between the underground bored tunnel and submerged floating tunnel can cause stress concentration, accompanying a fracture at the shore connection. The elastic joint has been proposed as a method to relive the stress concentration, however, the effect of the elastic joints on the dynamic behavior should be evaluated. In this study, the submerged floating tunnel and shore connection under dynamic load conditions were simulated through numerical analysis using a numerical model verified through a small-scaled physical model test. The resonant frequency was considered as a dynamic behavioral characteristic of the tunnel under the impact load, and it was confirmed that the stiffness of the elastic joint and the resonant frequency exhibit a power function relationship. When the shore connection is designed with a soft joint, the resonant frequency of the tunnel is reduced, which not only increases the risk of resonance in the marine environment where a dynamic load of low frequency is applied, but also greatly increases the maximum velocity of tunnel when resonance occurs.

  • Submerged floating tunnel (SFT) is a type of tunnel that allows tunnel segments to float underwater by buoyancy, and is being actively studied in recent years. When the submerged floating tunnel is connected to the ground, the tunnel and the bored tunnel inside the ground must be connected. There is risk that the stress will be concentrated at the connection between the two tunnels due to the different constraints and behavior of the two tunnels. Therefore, special design and construction methods should be applied to ensure the stability around the connection. However, previous studies on the stability at the connection site have not been sufficiently carried out, so study on the basic stage of the stability at connection site are necessary. In this study, numerical analysis simulating the connection between submerged floating tunnel and the bored tunnel confirmed that the shear strain concentration occurred in the ground around the connection, and it was analyzed that the structural factors can be handled during construction to have effects on the stability of the ground around the connection. Numerical results show that the risks from disproportionate displacements in the two tunnels can be mitigated through the construction of grouting material and joint design. Although the results from this study are qualitative results, it is expected that it will contribute to the determination of structural factors and risk areas that should be considered in the design of connections between the submerged floating tunnel and bored tunnel in the future studies.

  • In this paper, electrical risk factors due to the powered recovery equipments thrown to escape the dangerous condition that electrical apparatuses were submerged were derived and analyzed. After surveying several underground flooding sites, we could find out the status quo of the underground electrical equipments and what the most dangerous factors to a human body under water were. The results acquired from this study are applying to safely assessment algorithm.

  • We show three-dimensional distribution of voltages resulted from the leakage current originated from outdoor electrical facilities in a submerged area. In case these facilities are grounded by the neutral line multiple grounding method, the existence of ungrounded electrical facilities can cause a disastrous effect on near-by passengers. In order to investigate this situation, we installed a real-scale test field for the experiment type I (for the leakage current path between a enclosure grounded electrical facility and another enclosure grounded one), and that for the experiment type II (for the leakage current path between a enclosure grounded electrical facility and another ungrounded one). For both cases, we carried out three-dimensional monitoring of the voltage distribution while varying additional conditions such as the exposure of the underground cables and the finishing of cable connection part. The result shows that a disastrous effect on human safety can arise from the leakage current without a pertinent measure for the construction and maintenance of outdoor electrical facilities.

  • This study focused on shielding through inflatable structure in the event of sudden water inflow into the submerged floating tunnels. Currently, there is a lack of measures to deal with unexpected water in tunnels in Korea. Although water treatment facilities such as waterproofing and floodgates in tunnels are installed, there are limitations to the sudden inflow of large amounts of seawater or underground water. Also, floodgates cannot respond quickly to sudden damage due to slow blocking time. Accordingly, a study was conducted on the shielding rate and axial movement distance for inflatable structure. The results of the reduced model experiment confirmed that the number of inflatable structure and internal pneumatic pressure influence on the shielding rate. As the number of inflatable structure increased from one to two, the shielding rate increased by about 35 up to 40 percent. It was also confirmed that the shielding rate increased by about 4 percent as the internal pneumatic pressure increased from 0.2 bar to 0.3 bar. If we verify and further develop the results identified in this study through a real-size experiment, it will be able to be used as an effective waterproof measure for sudden water inflow into the undersea tunnels or underwater tunnels.

  • The closed cycle diesel system is operated in closed circuit system where there is non air breathing with working fluid consists of combination of oxygen, argon and recycled exhaust gas far obtaining underwater or underground power sources. Experimental apparatus using the MTU8V183SE92 high pressurized engine adapted for closed cycle running, capable of operating at the system pressure of maximum 5 bar is constructed with ACAP as data acquisition system in order to operate equally in the open cycle in surface or the closed cycle in submerged conditions. The general features and the characteristics of combustion of HP(high pressure) diesel engine, specially designed and manufactured only for CCDE, are investigated. The test results of performance of HP diesel engine in closed cycle system are presented with respect to power and boost pressure and compared with those of low pressure diesel engine. The oxygen concentration and specific heat ratio are investigated with its deviation
