A sample size calibration approach for the p-value problem in huge samples

  • The inclusion of covariates in the model often affects not only the estimates of meaningful variables of interest but also its statistical significance. Such gap between statistical and subject-matter significance is a critical issue in huge sample studies. A popular huge sample study, the sample cohort data from Korean National Health Insurance Service, showed such gap of significance in the inference for the effect of obesity on cause of mortality, requiring careful consideration. In this regard, this paper proposes a sample size calibration method based on a Monte Carlo t (or z)-test approach without Monte Carlo simulation, and also proposes a test procedure for subject-matter significance using this calibration method in order to complement the deflated p-value in the huge sample size. Our calibration method shows no subject-matter significance of the obesity paradox regardless of race, sex, and age groups, unlike traditional statistical suggestions based on p-values.

국내외 문헌정보 학술지에 나타난 공동연구자수에 관한 연구 (Team Size Patterns of Korean and International Journal Articles in Library and Information Science)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 국내외 문헌정보학 학술지들에서 나타나는 협업 범위를 저자수를 이용하여 측정하고 비교하는데 있다. 연구에 필요한 데이터세트를 위해, 2010-2016년도에 발간된 논문으로서 문헌정보분야와 관련된 국외학술지중 Scimago Journal Rank (SJR)에 기재된 최상위권 30개와 4개의 국내 문헌정보분야와 관련된 학술지를 선택하였다. 국내 학술지 저자 정보들은 RISS 데이터베이스에서 수집하였고 국외학술지 저자 정보들은 Scopus 데이터베이스를 사용하여 수집하였다. 연구결과 학술지의 경우 문헌정보 학술지에서는 단독저자부터 3인 공저자 까지가 가장 흔한 저자협업 정보임을 보여주었다. 국외 학술지는 저자협업이 국내학술지보다 더 다수의 경우가 많았다. 특별히, 국내의 경우 단독저자가 가장 흔했는데 국외 학술지에서는 2인 공저가 가장 흔했다. 연구분야를 살펴보면 도서관 관련 분야에서는 단독저자가 가장 흔하였고 과학/기술 분야는 3인 공저가 가장 흔하였다. 결론적으로 문헌정보학 분야에서는 연구분야의 다양성으로 인해 저자수도 상당히 다양해 질 수 있음을 제시하고 있다.

바닥 패턴을 이용한 단일영상 내의 피사체 크기 추출 (Extraction of Subject Size in Still Image Using Floor Pattern)

  • 본 논문 단일영상 내에 존재하는 피사체의 정보를 객관적인 수치로 구현하는 데 목적이 있다. 이러한 연구를 위해서 2차원의 단일영상이 가진 소실점을 기초로 하였으며, 3D 프로그램을 이용하여 단일영상을 3차원으로 재구성하였다. 또한, 3차원 재구성에 필요한 촬영카메라의 축 설정을 위해서 이미지가 가진 렌즈 화각 및 바닥 패턴을 활용하였다. 이렇게 완성된 3차원 영상은 하나의 기준이 되는 특정 피사체의 크기 값을 안다면 바닥패턴에 있는 모든 피사체의 크기 및 거리 측정이 가능하며 이를 통해 CCTV 또는 기타 범죄 사건의 영상에서 범인 및 단서가 되는 피사체의 기초정보를 획득할 수 있다.

대학도서관의 규모별 주제전문사서체제 도입방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on How to Introduce Subject-Oriented Service to University Libraries Based on Their Size in Korea)

  • 대학도서관은 기능별 조직과 주제별 조직으로 운영될 수 있으며, 주제별 조직에 대한 수요가 더 높게 나타나고 있다는 것은 선행 수요조사 연구들을 통해서 밝혀지고 있다. 또한 주제별 운영체제의 경제성 및 효율성 검증 연구 등이 수행되고, 주제별 조직으로의 전환을 주장하는 연구가 많이 있으나 아직도 국내의 현황을 조사해 보면, 완전 주제형으로 주제전문서비스를 제공하고 있는 대학도서관은 거의 없는 것으로 분석되고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 여러 가지 도서관 환경의 제약, 그 중에서 특히 직원규모의 한계로 인하여 주제전문서비스 체제를 도입하고 있지 못하는 도서관의 실정을 감안하여 실질적인 도입 운영방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 주제전문사서의 역할을 정리하고, 주제전문서비스 성공사례를 분석하였으며, 국내 4년제 대학도서관의 사이트를 조사하여 규모별 대학도서관의 다양한 현황을 파악하였다.

  • We consider a single channel CSMA/CD system with D homogeneous stations and impeded buffer of infinite size. We find a sufficient condition for the model to be stable under the threshold control policy and derive the limiting distri-bution of the number of messages in the system at the moment of service completion. We also derive the limiting distributing of the number of messages in the system size at arbitrary time by using Markov regenerative processes. Some numerical examples and special cases are also treated.

  • Underground flexible pipes for electric cables are subject to external loads and surrounding soil pressure. Particularly, strain of flexible pipes is of great concern in terms of safety and maintenance for electric cables. In this study, the actual size tests were carried out to investigate strain-deformation relation for underground flexible pipes subject to vehicle loads with various depths and degree of compaction.

두꺼운 피사체 X선 촬영 시 보호앞치마 착용의 유용성 (Utility of Wearing Protective Apron for X-ray of Thick Subject)

  • This study examined the effectiveness degree of a protective apron that is taken not to be exposed to the first ray or scattered rays, for X-ray of thick subject like lateral lumbar, and the results are as follows; First, spatial dose by scattered rays is shielded by 3 mmPb protective apron, 86.8% at a distance of 50 cm, 92.7% at 100 cm, and 95.6% at 200 cm, when minimizing the field size, while 89% at a distance of 50 cm, 92.3% at 100 cm, and 95.2% at 200 cm, when maximizing the field size. Second, 1st exposure dose is shielded by 3 mmPb protective apron, 93.7% at a distance of 50 cm, 94.4% at 100 cm, and 93.6% at 200 cm, when minimizing the field size, while 93.7% at a distance of 50 cm, 93.6% at 100 cm, and 94.2% at 200 cm, when maximizing the field size.

시각작업의 배경 조건과 8개 Meridian을 고려한 시각영역의 생성 (Generation of Visual Field Considering 8 Meridians and Background Conditions of Visual Tasks)

  • Among numerous factors that have an effect on visual field, the effects of background condition on the size of the visual field were investigated to obtain more practical visual field that can be readily applicable to industrial settings. A visual experiment was conducted, in which the subject was instructed to search a target with distinct orientations. Size contrast, meridian, nontarget density, and subject's gender showed a significant effect on the size of the visual field at $\alpha=0.01$. The size of the visual field was linearly proportional to size contrast, and inversely proportional to density. Female's visual fields were found to be significantly larger than male subjects', The size of the visual field on horizontal axis was larger than that on vertical axis, and the size of the head & eye field on right meridian was also larger than that on left meridian. The shape was found to be horizontally oriented oval and statistically asymmetric with respect to horizontal and vertical axes. The regression equations to predict the visual fields on the given background condition were suggested. The visual fields suggested in this study would be valuable to the design of visual displays and the panel layout of various displays and controls.

여대생(女大生)들의 체형(體型)에 대한 인식(認識)과 외모(外貌)관리행동(行動)에 관한 연구(硏究) (The Research on the Female College Students' Perception of their bodies and their Appearance-Management Behaiors)

  • This research analyzes how female college students' perception of somatotype-self and their satisfactions with their somatotype-self affect their appearance-management behaviors. The result is as follows: 1)An analysis of subjects' physical characteristics revealed that the average figures of their body sizes were within the normal boundaries. The average Quetelet Index of the subjects, which determines obesity of adults, was slightly below the nationwide physical standard of Korea. 2)The subjects' satisfaction with their each body part shows that the women were unsatisfied with every body-part measurement; height, bust size, waist size, hips size and particularly weight. 3)While most of the respondents recognized that sizes of their body parts were average, they were not happy with their body sizes. 4)Three factors were recognized from the study of appearance-management behaviors of the subjects; we defined them as 'Appearance Management', 'Weight Management', and 'Satisfaction with one's Appearance.' The study showed that the fatter, the more a subject controlled her weight. 5)A correlation study between one's perception of her body and her appearance-management behavior found that the more obese a subject was, the harder the subject was controlling her weight.

질감 특징과 CAMShift 알고리즘을 이용한 무대 피사체 위치 추적 기법 설계 및 구현 (Design and Implementation of a Stage Object Location Tracking Method using Texture Feature and CAMShift Algorithm)

  • In this paper, we propose an robust CAMShift method to track stage objects with a camera. In order to solve the problem of tracking object misdetection in existing CAMShift technique, MBR region is detected to separate the background and the subject, and the subject size of the region of interest is calculated to solve the problem of erroneously detecting a large region having a similar color distribution ratio. Also, by applying the color corelogram and MB-LBP to the part that can not be solved by the color ratio and the size limitation, accurate texture tracking is enabled by reflecting the texture characteristics. Experimental results show that the proposed method has good tracking performance for objects that do not deviate from the size of the subject set in the area of interest and accurately extracts the texture characteristics of different subjects with similar color distribution ratios.
