Crack, craze and void are common defects which may be found in the bulk of polymeric materials such as either themoplastics or thermosets. The healing phenomena, autohesion, of these defects are known to be a intrinsic material property of various polymeric materials. However, only a few experimental and theoretical investigations on crack, void and craze healing phenomena for various polymeric materials have been reported up to date [1, 2, 3]. This may be partly due to the complications of healing processes and lacking of appropriate theoretical developments. Recently, some investigators have been urged to study the healing phenomena of various polymenic materials since the significance of the use of polymer based alloys or composites has been raised in terms of specific strength and energy saving. In the earlier published reports [1, 2, 3, 4], the crack and void healing velocity, healing toughness and some other healing mechanical and physical properties were measured experimentally and compared with predicted values by utilizing a simple model such as the reptation model under some resonable assumptions. It seems, however, that the general acceptance of the proposed modeling analyses is yet open question. The crack healing processes seem to be complicate and highly dependent on the state of virgin material in terms of mechanical and physical properties. Furthermore, it is also strongly dependent on the histories of crack, craze and void development including fracture suface morphology, the shape of void and the degree of disentanglement of fibril in the craze. The rate of crack healing may be a function of environmental factors such as healing temperature, time and pressure which gives different contact configurations between two separated surfaces. It seems to be reasonable to assume that the crack healing processes may be divided in several distinguished steps like stress relaxation with molecular chain arrangement, surface contact (wetting), inter- diffusion process and com;oete healing (to obtain the original strength). In this context, it is likely that we no longer have to accept the limitation of cumulative damage theories and fatigue life if it is probable to remove the defects such as crack, craze and void and to restore the original strength of polymers or polymer based compowites by suitable choice of healing histories and methods. In this paper, we wish to present a very simple and intuitive theoretical model for the prediction of healed fracture toughness of cracked or defective polymeric components. The central idea of this investigation, thus, may be the modeling of behavior of chain molecules under healing conditions including the effects of chain scission on the healing processes. The validity of this proposed model will be studied by making comparisons between theoretically predicted values and experimentally determined results in near future and will be reported elsewhere.
This study interrogated multi-layer heterojunction anodes were interrogated for potential applications to water treatment. The multi-layer anodes with outer layers of $SnO_2/Bi_2O_3$ and/or $TiO_2/Bi_2O_3$ onto $IrO_2/Ta_2O_5$ electrodes were prepared by thermal decomposition and characterized in terms of reactive chlorine species (RCS) generation in 50 mM NaCl solutions. The $IrO_2/Ta_2O_5$ layer on Ti substrate (Anode 1) primarily served as an electron shuttle. The current efficiency (CE) and energy efficiency (EE) for RCS generation were significantly enhanced by the further coating of $SnO_2/Bi_2O_3$ (Anode 2) and $TiO_2/Bi_2O_3$ (Anode 3) layers onto the Anode 1, despite moderate losses in electrical conductivity and active surface area. The CE of the Anode 3 was found to show the highest RCS generation rate, whereas the multi-junction architecture (Anode 4, sequential coating of $IrO_2/Ta_2O_5$, $SnO_2/Bi_2O_3$, and $TiO_2/Bi_2O_3$) showed marginal improvement. The microscopic observations indicated that the outer $TiO_2/Bi_2O_3$ could form a crack-free layer by an incorporation of anatase $TiO_2$ particles, potentially increasing the service life of the anode. The results of this study are expected to broaden the usage of dimensionally stable anodes in water treatment with an enhanced RCS generation and lifetime.

The reactor pressure vessel(RPV) is usually cladded with stainless steel to prevent corrosion and radiation embrittlement, and a number of subclad cracks have been found during an in-service-inspection. These subclad cracks should be assured for a safe operation under normal conditions and faulted conditions such as pressurized thermal shock(PTS). Currently available integrity assessment procedure for an RPV, ASME Code Sec. XI, are built on the basis of linear fracture mechanics (LEFM). In PTS condition, however, thermal stress and mechanical stress give rise to high tensile stress at the cladding and elastic-plastic behavior is expected in this area. Therfore, ASME Code Sec. XI is overly conservative in assessing the structural integrity under PTS condition. In this paper, the fracture parameter (stress intensity factor, K, and RT(sub)NDT) from elastic analysis using ASME Sec. XI and finite element method were validated against 3-D elastic-plastic finite element analyses. The difference between elastic and elastic-plastic analysis became significant with increasing crack depth. Therfore, it is recommended to perform elastic-plastic analysis for the accurate assessment of subclad cracks under TPS which causes plastic deformation at the cladding.

The test specimen, designated the double cantilever beam, was employed for a fracture mechanics study of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of type 5083 Al-alloy in seawater. Stress intensities for this DCB specimen were calculated by using compliance, strain energy release rate and relation between stress intensity and strain energy release rate. Analytical expression for compliance as a function of crack length was obtained by applying beam theory. It was investigated that the polarization potentials affected the growth rate and surface of stress corrosion cracking. The results are as follows, The critical stress intensity was 134.81-148.38kg/mm super(3/2) and K sub(Ii) under polarization potentials was 75.92-145.78kg/mm super(3/2). The minimum stress corrosion crack growth rate was occurred at-987mV SCE. Insoluble compound on $\beta$ phase was looked into through SCC. The greater anodic potential is, the larger insoluble compound on $\beta$ phase becomes.
Carbon fiber reinforced SiC composites (C/SiC) have high-temperature stability and excellent thermal shock resistance, and are currently being applied in extreme environments, for example, as aerospace propulsion parts or in high-performance brake systems. However, their low thermal conductivity, compared to metallic materials, are an obstacle to energy efficiency improvements via utilization of regenerative cooling systems. In order to solve this problem, the present study investigated the bonding strength between carbon fiber and matrix material within ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials, demonstrating the relation between the microstructure and bonding, and showing that the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity may be improved by treatment of the carbon fibers. When fiber surface was treated with a nitric acid solution, the observed segment crack areas within the subsequently generated CMC increased from 6 to 10%; moreover, it was possible to enhance the thermal conductivity from 10.5 to 14 W/m·K, via the same approach. However, fiber surface treatment tends to cause mechanical damage of the final composite material by fiber etching.

Coating films of $SiO_2-TiO_2-AgO$ have been prepared on soda-lime-silica slide glasses and single crystal silicon wafer by the sol-gel method using a spin-coating technique. Commercially available tetraethyl orthosilicate, titanium trichloride, and silver-nitrates were used as starting materials. The heat treatment temperature of this coating films was $500^{\circ}C$ properly, obtained from TG-DTA result. The films with thickness of 310 nm were prepared by 5 times coating. In the case of l0 mol% AgO, the film showed a crack-free and smooth surface, but the higher Ago content exhibited the more pin hole and the segregated cluster of AgO. The IR absorbance of the films decreased in the range of 400 nm to 700 nm with the increase of annealing temperature. And the reflectance of the coating films decreased and the color was changed light yellow to white yellow with the increase of Ago content.

We demonstrated a crack-free ${\alpha}-Ga_2O_3$ on sapphire substrate by horizontal halide vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE). Oxygen-and gallium chloride-synthesized Ga metal and HCl were used as the precursors, and $N_2$ was used as the carrier gas. The HCl flow and growth temperature were controlled in the ranges of 10~30 sccm and $450{\sim}490^{\circ}C$, respectively. The surface of ${\alpha}-Ga_2O_3$ template grown at $470^{\circ}C$ was flat and the root-mean-square (RMS) roughness was ~2 nm. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) values for the symmetric-plane diffractions, were as small as 50 arcsec and those for the asymmetric-plane diffractions were as high as 1,800 arcsec. The crystal quality of ${\alpha}-Ga_2O_3$ on sapphire can be controlled by varying the HCl flow rate and growth temperature.

The purpose of this study is to confirm the decreasing problems of residual bending strength, and the fracture machanism experimentally when CFRP composite laminates are subjected to Foreign Object Damage. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CFRP orthotropy laminated plates, which have two-interfaces [O/sub 6//sup o//90/sub 6//sup o/]sub sym/ and four-interfaces [O/sub 3//sup o//90/sub 6//sup o//O/sub 3//sup o]/sub sym/. When the specimen is subjected to transverse impact by a steel ball, the delamination area generated by impact damage is observed by using SAM(Scanning Acoustic Microscope). also, Thefracture surfaces obtained by three-point bending test were observed by using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). Then, fracture mechanism was investigated based on the observed delamination area and fracture surface. The results were summarized as follows; (1) It is found that for the specimen with more interface, the critical delamination energy is increased while delamination-development energy is decreased. (2) Residual bending strength of specimen A is greater than that of Specimen B within the impact range of impact energy 1. 65J (impacted-side compression) and 1. 45J (impacted-side tension). On the other hand, when the impact energy is beyond the above ranges, residual bending strength of specimen A is smaller than that of specimen B. (3) In specimen A and B, residual strength of CFRP plates subjected to impact damage is lower in the impacted-side compression than in the impacted-side tension. (4) In the case of impacted-side compression, fracture is propagated from the transverse crack generat-ed near impact point. On the other hand, fracture is developed toward the impact point from the edge of interface-B delamination in the case of impacted-side tension.
Material failure behavior is generally dependent on loading rate. Especially in brittle and quasi-brittle materials, rate dependent material behavior can be significant. Empirical formulations are often used to predict the rate dependency, but such methods depend on extensive experimental works and are limited by practical constraints of physical testing. Numerical simulation can be an effective means for extracting knowledge about rate dependent behavior and for complementing the results obtained by testing. In this paper, the failure behavior of a brittle material under different loading rates is simulated by molecular dynamics analysis. A notched specimen is modeled by sub-million particles with a normalization scheme. Lennard-Jones potential is used to describe the interparticle force. Numerical simulations are performed with six different loading rates in a direct tensile test, where the loading velocity is normalized to the ratio of the pseudo-sonic speed. As a consequence, dynamic features are achieved from the numerical experiments. Remarkable failure characteristics, such as crack surface interaction/crack arrest, branching, and void nucleation, vary in case of the six loading cases. These characteristics are interpreted by the energy concept approach. This study provides insight into the change in dynamic failure mechanism under different loading rates.
Fracture mode and carbide reactions of cast alloy 738LC during thermal exposure and creep at 816$^{\circ}C$/440MPa and 982$^{\circ}C$/152MPa were investigated. Crystallographic transgranular failure was observed in the specimen crept at 816$^{\circ}C$ due to shearing on the slip plane. Because selective oxidation at the grainboundaries which was exposed at the surface leads reduction in surface energy, however, early initiation of crack at the grainboundaries and intergranular failure were observed in the specimen crept at 982$^{\circ}C$/152MPa. As a result of decomposition of MC carbide at the tested temperatures, M(sub)23C(sub)6 carbide precipitated either on the grainboundaries or on the deformation band. The applied stress enhanced decomposition of MC. $\sigma$phase nucleated from Cr(sub)23C(sub)6 then grew to the ${\gamma}$+${\gamma}$\\` matrix. Precipitation of $\sigma$was accelerated by increasing temperature and applied stress.
