  • This paper proposes a pre-processing algorithm to improve the coding efficiency of perceptual video coding. First, an input image is decomposed into multiple sub-bands through linear sub-band decomposition. Then, the sub-bands that have low visual sensitivity are suppressed by assigning small gains to them. Experimental results show that if the proposed algorithm is adopted for pre-processing in a High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) encoder, it can provide significant bit-saving effects of approximately 12% in low delay mode and 9.4% in random access mode.

  • This paper proposed a versatile algorithm based on a dual-tree complex wavelet transform for intensifying the visual aspect of medical images. First, the decomposition of the input image into a high sub-band and low-sub-band image is done. Further, to improve the resolution of the resulting image, the high sub-band image is interpolated using Lanczos interpolation. Also, contrast enhancement is performed by singular value decomposition (SVD). Finally, the image reconstruction is achieved by using an inverse wavelet transform. Then, the Gaussian filter will improve the visual quality of the image. We have collected images from the hospital and the internet for quantitative and qualitative analysis. These images act as a reference image for comparing the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm with the existing state-of-the-art. We have divided the proposed algorithm into several stages: preprocessing, contrast enhancement, resolution enhancement, and visual quality enhancement. Both analyses show the proposed algorithm's effectiveness compared to existing methods.

  • This paper proposes a pre-processing algorithm to improve perceptual video coding efficiency which decomposes an input frame via a sub-band decomposition, and suppresses only high frequency band(s) having low visual sensitivity. First, we decompose the input frame into several frequency subbands by a linear sub-band decomposition. Next, high frequency subband(s) which is rarely recognized by human visual system (HVS) is suppressed by applying relatively small gain(s). Finally, the high frequency suppressed frame is compressed by a specific video encoder. We can find from the experimental results that if comparing before-use and after-use of the proposed pre-processing prior to the encoder, no visual difference is shown. Also, the proposed algorithm achieves bit-saving of 13.12% on average in a H.264 video encoder.

  • The thermal annealing effects on the optical transparency and luminescent characteristics of the Eu-doped Y2O3 thin films have been investigated. The as-deposited Y2O3:Eu films exhibited an optical band gap of 5.78 eV with a transparency of 89 % at a wavelength of 550 nm. As the annealing temperature increased from 1000 to 1300 ℃, the optical band gap and transparency of the films decreased from 5.77 to 4.91 eV and from 86.8 to 64.5 % at 550 nm, respectively. The crystalline quality of the films was improved with increasing annealing temperature. The annealed Y2O3:Eu films emitted a red-color photoluminescence (PL) with the highest emission peak near 612 nm. The PL intensity was increased with increasing annealing temperature to 1200 ℃, resulting from the improvement in the crystalline quality of the films. The PL intensity was decreased with further increasing temperature above 1200 ℃ due to the formation of Y2SiO5 phase by the reaction of the film with the quartz substrate.

  • The algorithm of multiple channel signal processing requires the flexibility of variable frequency band, efficient allocation of transmission power, and flexible frequency band reallocation to satisfy various service types which requires different transmission rates and frequency band. This paper proposes an improved multiple channel signal processing for converting the frequency band of multiple carrier signals efficiently using a window function and DFT in the time domain. In contrast to the previous algorithm of multiple-channel signal processing performing band-pass signal processing in the frequency domain, the proposed algorithm is a method of block signal processing using a window function in the time domain. In addition, the complexity of proposed algorithm of the window function is lower than that of the previous algorithm performing signal processing in the frequency domain, and it performs the frequency band transform efficiently. The computer simulation result shows that the perfect reconstruction of output signal and the flexible frequency band reallocation is performed efficiently by the proposed algorithm.

  • Nano-structured one-dimensional $Na_2Ti_6O_{13}$ particles were synthesized by a molten salt process. Effects of processing parameters on the microstructure and band gap energy of the $Na_2Ti_6O_{13}$ powder were studied in this paper. For the synthesis of the $Na_2Ti_6O_{13}$ particles, two different raw materials of tubular shaped Na-titanate (Na-TiNT) and spherical shaped $TiO_2$ were utilized. Synthesizing with the raw material of Na-TiNT, around 70nm thick 1D-$Na_2Ti_6O_{13}$ with the bandgap energy of 3.5 eV was obtained at $810^{\circ}C$. Below $810^{\circ}C$ or without the presence of NaCl, 1D-$Na_2Ti_6O_{13}$ was in a relatively short in length and agglomerated state. With the processing temperature increased, the thickness of the 1D-$Na_2Ti_6O_{13}$ was also observed to be increased. On the other hand, when $TiO_2$ was employed as a raw material, the mixed amount of $Na_2CO_3$ played an important role in transforming the morphology and phase of the raw material, affecting the bandgap energy of the synthesized product. Specific surface area of the synthesized 1D-$Na_2Ti_6O_{13}$ was significantly affected by the raw and mixed materials as well as processing temperature. When Na-TiNT was processed at $810^{\circ}C$ with NaCl, the specific surface area of the 1D-$Na_2Ti_6O_{13}$ showed the best value of 30.63 $m^2/g$.

  • This paper presented efficient transceiver structure using sub-band processing for underwater communication in terms of covertness and performance improvement. In aspect of covertness, encrypted coded-bits are divided into groups, and center frequency and sub band are determined by coded-bits of each group. Therefore, as center frequencies are changed randomly, it maintain the covertness effectively. In aspect of performance improvement, the performance of underwater communication mainly depends on multi-path propagation characteristics, Doppler-spread, and frame synchronization. Accordingly, in order to overcome these effects, non-coherent energy detector and turbo equalization method are employed in receiver side. Furthermore, optimal frame synchronization was proposed. Through the simulation and lake experiment, performance analysis was conducted. Especially in the lake experiment, as a result of applying optimal frame synchronization method to receiver structure, errors are corrected in most frames.

  • In this paper, we explore the application of 2-D dual-tree discrete wavelet transform (DDWT), which is a directional and redundant transform, for image coding. DDWT main property is a more computationally efficient approach to shift invariance. Also, the DDWT gives much better directional selectivity when filtering multidimensional signals. The dual-tree DWT of a signal is implemented using two critically-sampled DWTs in parallel on the same data. The transform is 2-times expansive because for an N-point signal it gives 2N DWT coefficients. If the filters are designed is a specific way, then the sub-band signals of the upper DWT can be interpreted as the real part of a complex wavelet transform, and sub-band signals of the lower DWT can be interpreted as the imaginary part. The quincunx lattice is a sampling method in image processing. It treats the different directions more homogeneously than the separable two dimensional schemes. Quincunx lattice yields a non separable 2D-wavelet transform, which is also symmetric in both horizontal and vertical direction. And non-separable wavelet transformation can generate sub-images of multiple degrees rotated versions. Therefore, non-separable image processing using DDWT services good performance.

  • Discrete wavelet transforms are extensively preferred in biomedical signal processing for denoising, feature extraction, and compression. This paper presents a new denoising method based on the modeling of discrete wavelet coefficients of ECG in selected sub-bands with Kernel density estimation. The modeling provides a statistical distribution of information and noise. A Gaussian kernel with bounded support is used for modeling sub-band coefficients and thresholds and is estimated by placing a sliding window on a normalized cumulative density function. We evaluated this approach on offline noisy ECG records from the Cardiovascular Research Centre of the University of Glasgow and on records from the MIT-BIH Arrythmia database. Results show that our proposed technique has a more reliable physical basis and provides improvement in the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and Percentage RMS Difference (PRD). The morphological information of ECG signals is found to be unaffected after employing denoising. This is quantified by calculating the mean square error between the feature vectors of original and denoised signal. MSE values are less than 0.05 for most of the cases.

  • Existing radars have been developed by applying RF sub-array algorithms, and recently, fully digital Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radar algorithms have been implemented for vehicle radars. In this paper, the radar algorithm applying the Phased MIMO method to the hardware of the RF sub-array method, which is an unsecured technology, was implemented and verified in real time. In order to secure RF sub-array Phased MIMO algorithm technology, a hardware structure for FPGA-based real-time signal processing was presented, and performance was first predicted through design and simulation. Through this, the digital signal of FPGA-based broadband MIMO FMCW radar The processing hardware was developed, and the Phased MIMO radar algorithm of the RF sub-Array method was finally implemented and verified in real time. Based on this, it is judged that it will be possible to secure and apply core technologies necessary for terahertz band radar in the future.
