Several research institutes including KISTEC and KRRI etc., recently, have studied maintenance activities and performance, in order to determine proper maintenance level and maintenance cost of rail tracks. But it may extremely difficult to make a decision in maintenance matters of concrete track and ballast containing other sub-components. For these reasons, this study investigate variables related to current maintenance, essential maintenance, and preventive maintenance. It is intended to suggest estimation method of proper maintenance cost maximizing rail track performance. It is stated that proposed approach may be very useful to make a decision of proper maintenance level. Typical section of rail track is applied for calculation of life cycle cost according to each maintenance strategy. A proper profile for maintenance is determined minimum life cycle
In this paper, the main factors affect on the longitudinal rail force are discussed. Considering rail-bridge interaction, analytical and experimental evaluation of track behavior has been achieved. It is concluded that the horizontal ballast strength, the expansion length of the bridge span, and the stiffness of the bridge sub-structure are the significant parameters affecting the stability of the continuous welded rail (CWR) track. And, it is suggested that the ballast resistance forces should be maintained to ensure the track stability during the service.
Changes in substructure conditions, such as ballast fouling and subgrade settlement may cause the railway quality deterioration, including the differential geometry of the rails. The objective of this study is to develop and apply a hybrid cone penetrometer (HCP) to characterize the railway substructure. The HCP consists of an outer rod and an inner mini cone, which can dynamically and statically penetrate the ballast and the subgrade, respectively. An accelerometer and four strain gauges are installed at the head of the outer rod and four strain gauges are attached at the tip of the inner mini cone. In the ballast, the outer rod provides a dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) and the corrected DCPI (CDCPI) with the energy transferred into the rod head. Then, the inner mini cone is pushed to estimate the strength of the subgrade from the cone tip resistance. Laboratory application tests are performed on the specimen, which is prepared with gravel and sandy soil. In addition, the HCP is applied in the field and compared with the standard dynamic cone penetration test. The results from the laboratory and the field tests show that the cone tip resistance is inversely proportional to the CDCPI. Furthermore, in the subgrade, the HCP produces a high-resolution profile of the cone tip resistance and a profile of the CDCPI in the ballast. This study suggests that the dynamic and static penetration tests using the HCP may be useful for characterizing the railway substructure.
Not only efficiency of chlorine evolution reaction (CER) but also durability namely service life is very important property in dimensional stable anode for Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) for marine ships. Many researchers have been focused on improving efficiency of CER by controlling composition, phase and surface area for a long time, but the efforts to increase durability was relatively small. In this study, we have investigated the effect of $TiO_2$ protective interlayers on efficiency and durability of DSA electrodes. $TiO_2$ protective interlayers were prepared by thermal oxidation at 500, 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ on Ti substrate. And then the DSA electrodes consisting of $Ti/RuO_2-PdO-TiO_2$ were prepared by thermal decomposition method on $TiO_2$ interlayers. The efficiencies of CER of DSA electrodes without $TiO_2$ interlayer and with $TiO_2$ interlayer grown at 500, 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ were 94.19, 94.45, 84.60 and 76.75% respectively. On the otherhand, durabilities were 30, 55, 90 and 65 hours respectively. In terms of industrial aspect, the performance of DSA is considered high efficiency and durability which can correspond to total production of chlorine. If we considered the performance index of DSA as the product of efficiency and durability, performance indices could be recalculated as 28.26, 50.85, 76.14 and 49.89 respectively. As the thermal oxidation temperature increasing, life time were increased remarkerbly, while efficiency of CER was decreased slightly. As a result, DSA electrode with $TiO_2$ interlayer grown at $600^{\circ}C$ has shown about 2.7 times performace of original DSA electrode without $TiO_2$ interlayer.

The function of subgrade in the railway is to support track load on the subgrade as well as train load. Unlike the traditional railway, the uppermost subgrade layer in the Gyeongbu high speed railway was constructed as the reinforced road bed. The reinforced road bed comprises sub-ballast in the upper part and grade ballast in the lower part. The filling material such as soil and rocks in the subgrade can be settled by consolidation of original ground, compression due to self weight, plastic displacement due to train operation, and unequal settlement due to embankment material or improper compaction, therefore many efforts have been given for sufficient compaction and use of proper filling materials in the construction stage. The purpose of this study is to investigate the deformation state of subgrade in the Gyeongbu high speed railway. The investigation on the subgrade settlement was performed by choosing representative sections suspected to be settled based on the previous GPR test results and track maintenance history, measuring the settlement for some time period after installing settlement measuring instruments on and under the reinforced road bed. and analyzing the long-term subgrade settlement data from monitoring system which was installed at the construction stage of the high speed railway.
In this research, a few paints in the shipyard were selected and analyzed for the component and ozone production in marine paint using TVOC and GC/FID, ozone generation index (MIR, POCP) to establish measures of $VOC_s$ effectively. The concentrations of TVOC ranged between approximately 300~400 g/L and 400~500 g/L, respectively and these showed 37% of whole. Our results indicated that the main constituents of marine paints were m,p,oxylene (49%), ethyl benzene (10%), toluene (8%) and 2-propanol (5%). It was also found that xylene concentration have relatively higher impact on ozone generation. The types of paints were also investigated for their potentials. The biggest contributor was the 1 Pack Finish paint. The rest is, in their contributing order, 1 Pack Finish paint, 2 pack Finish paint, Anti-fouling paint, 2 Pack A/C paint, Ballast paint and 1 Pack A/C paint.
An innovative design of a floating-buoy wave energy converter (WEC) using hydrostatic transmission (HST), named HSTWEC, is presented in this paper. The system is designed to convert ocean wave fluctuation into electricity by using the HST circuit and an electric generator. Based on the floating-buoy concept, the wave forces the sub-buoy to move up and down. Consequently, the electric power can be obtained from the generator in both the moving directions of the sub-buoy through the HST circuit as shown in Fig. 1. In order to investigate the HSTWEC operations, a mathematical model of the system is indispensible. In addition, the method to control the HSTWEC, including: pump displacement control, tension adjustment control and ballast weight control, is also discussed in this paper. Finally, the design concept as well as simulation results indicated that this HSTWEC design is an effective solution and possible to fabricate for wave energy generation.
In the trackbed design using elastic multi-layer model, the stress-dependent resilient modulus is an important input parameter, which reflects substructure performance under repeated traffic loading. The resilient moduli of crushed stone and weathered granite soil were developed using nonlinear dynamic stiffness, which can be measured by in-situ and laboratory seismic tests. The prediction models of resilient modulus varying with the deviatoric or bulk stress were proposed (Park et al., 2008). To investigate the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of the test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of the test sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 1mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation. The prediction models proposed for resilient modulus were verified by the comparison of the calculated vertical displacements with measured ones during train passages.
The track and bridge interaction should be considered for the safety check of railway bridge design as the longitudinal forces transmitted to rail and bridge are changed by longitudinal stiffness of bridge system. The longitudinal stiffness of bridge structures is determined by the magnitude of the ballast resistance, the expansion length of superstructure, and longitudinal stiffness of substructure including pier and foundations. In this study, the main factors affect on the longitudinal rail forces are discussed and the computational parametric analysis of rail forces considering rail-bridge interactions. And the required range of stiffness of sub-structures and span length for the assurance of safety of CWR(continuous welded rail) track is suggested.
