  • In the 21st century, university education is changing from an objective knowledge and information to critical thinking and problem-solving ability. Moreover, university education should change rapidly towards a learner-centered educational environment because it has an educational goal to have college students experience authentic tasks they will be in charge of after graduation, and improves self-directed learning ability and cooperative learning ability. PBL is a pedagogical strategy for posing significant, contextualized, real world situations, and providing resources, guidance, and instruction to learners as they develop content knowledge and problem-solving skills. In problem based learning, the students collaborate to study the issues of a problem as they strive to create viable solution. For these advantages of PBL, the application of PBL in school has been enlarged. On the other hand, the application of PBL in engineering education has not been enlarged. To improve these instruction methods, the development or applications of new instructional methods will be needed. This study examined the PBL instructional design of a creative engineering design subject, which aims to foster talent. The PBL model developed in this study consists of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. A plan of creative engineering design subject was developed based on PBL, and focused on the process of PBL. To determine the effects of this model, studies applying this instructional design to many lecturers should be implemented.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate trends in research studies on scientific argument and writing in Korea. 118 research studies published from 2004 to 2013 have been collected and analyzed. Many of the research studies focused on developing teaching strategies, analyzing contents of scientific argument and writing, and effects on student learning. More than half of the studies were conducted with elementary and middle school students while studies with pre-service, in-service teachers or high school students were relatively rare. Most research studies were conducted within regular school hour context and participants were given relevant information/education prior to argument and writing activities. Many research have analyzed student growth in scientific attitudes and we would suggest that further studies should investigate student growth in scientific concepts, scientific inquiry, and critical thinking. The structure and process of argument or the content and form of writing have been analyzed. The quality of argument and scientific concepts embedded in argument and writing should be investigated more in future researches.

  • In this study, the effects of extraversion/introversion grouping and the differences between extroverts and introverts in cooperative learning strategy applied to general science class were investigated. Ninety-three 10th-graders were grouped into homogeneous and heterogeneous cooperative groups with respect to extraversion and introversion, and were taught about matter for 10 class periods. Prior to the instructions, three tests regarding the extraversion/introversion, logical thinking, and learning motivation were administered. After the instructions, their achievements, process skills, self-esteem, communication apprehension, and learning motivation were examined. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that there were no main and interactive effects in the scores of the achievement and the process skills tests. However, significant interactive effect was found in the self-esteem. While the difference in the self-esteem of the introverts and the extroverts was small in the homogeneous group, the self-esteem of the extroverts was higher than that of the introverts in the heterogeneous group. The communication apprehension of the introverts was significantly lower than that of the extroverts. Students' perceptions to their group activities and group members were also studied.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze and extract the features of verbal interactions between teacher and science-gifted students in their classes. For the purpose of this study, authors observed 27 elementary science classes for the science gifted of three elementary teachers. To analyze the verbal interactions in the classes, the authors have adopted the theoretical background, which was based on Sinclair & Coulthard's Initiative-Response-Feedback pattern. Verbal interactions in the classes were analyzed by Kim's framework, which modified Jeong's framework. IRF patterns were derived from the verbal interactions of science classes for the science gifted. As a result, authors obtained some important features in IRF pattern. The most commonly used IRF pattern was the teacher's managerial question-student's short answer pattern, which was due to the regional policy for the science gifted. The teacher's delayed feedback as well as the teacher's question was meaningful for student's thinking ability. If elementary teachers consider the pattern, the strategy should be applied, which is depending on student levels and levels of contents. But three teachers did not show the characteristic verbal interaction regarded as a pattern strategy. In the future, inservice programs about verbal interaction are needed for the science gifted classes.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest implications for the development and revision of future teaching materials for mathematically gifted students by using network text analysis of secondary mathematics materials. Subjects of the analysis were learning goals of 110 teaching materials in a gifted education center in science attached to a university from 2002 to 2014. In analysing the frequency of the texts that appeared in the learning goals, key words were selected. A co-occurrence matrix of the key words was established, and a basic information of network, centrality, centralization, component, and k-core were deducted. For the analysis, KrKwic, KrTitle, and NetMiner4.0 programs were used, respectively. The results of this study were as follows. First, there was a pivot of the network formed with core hubs including 'diversity', 'understanding' 'concept' 'method', 'application', 'connection' 'problem solving', 'basic', 'real life', and 'thinking ability' in the whole network from 2002 to 2014. In addition, knowledge aspects were well reflected in teaching materials based on the centralization analysis. Second, network text analysis based on the three periods of the Mater Plan for the promotion of gifted education was conducted. As a result, a network was built up with 'understanding', and there were strong ties among 'question', 'answer', and 'problem solving' regardless of the periods. On the contrary, the centrality analysis showed that 'communication', 'discovery', and 'proof' only appeared in the first, second, and third period of Master Plan, respectively. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that affective aspects and activities with high cognitive process should be accompanied, and learning goals' mannerism and ahistoricism be prevented in developing and revising teaching materials.
