Mechanical property evaluation of micrometer-sized structures is necessary to help design reliable microelectromechanical systems(MEMS) devices. Most material properties are known to exhibit dependence on specimen size and such properties of microscale structures are not well characterized. This paper describes techniques developed for tensile testing of thin film used in MEMS. Epi-polycrystalline silicon is currently the most widely used material, and its tensile strength has been measured as 1.52GPa. We have developed a tensile testing machine for testing microscale specimen using electro-magnetic actuator. The field magnet and the moving coil taken from an audio-speaker were utilized as the components of the actuator. Structure of specimen was designed and manufactured for easy handling and alignment. In addition to the static tensile tests, it is described that new techniques and procedures can be adopted for high cycle fatigue test of a thin film.
This study introduces a new topology optimization scheme combing the genetic algorithm (GA) with the on/off sensitivity method for the magnetic actuator core and the armature design. The design process intended to maximize the first eigen-frequency of the armature part and the magnetic actuating force acting on the armature simultaneously. GA based optimal design was carried out to obtain the initial structure and the modified on/off sensitivity method was succeeded to accelerate the design process. Final results show tens of percent improvement in actuating force as well as the first eigen-frequency of the armature.
In this paper, a new three-dimensional piezoelectric thin shell element containing an integrated distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator is proposed. The distributed piezoelectric sensor layer monitors the structural shape deformation due to the direct effect and the distributed actuator layer suppresses the deflection via the converse piezoelectric effect. A finite element formulation is presented for static response of laminated shell with piezoelectric sensors/actuators. An eight-node and forty-DOF shell element is built. The performance of the shell elements is improved by reduced integration technique. The static shape control of structure is derived. The shell element is verified by calculating piezoelectric polymeric PVDF bimorph beam. The results agreed with those obtained by theoretical analysis, Tzou and Tseng (1990) and Hwang and Park (1993) fairly well. At last, the static shape control of a paraboloidal antenna is presented.

This paper describes the design and the performance analysis of an Ha controller for noncollocated active vibrating systems. An experiment for the active vibration control of a flexible structure is performed. The experimental model used is a cantilever beam controlled by an active damping system consisting of a laser sensor and an electromagnetic actuator. The $H_2$ controller design is based on the reduced order model and the designed system is capable of attenuating vibration without causing spillover instability, The design procedure to prevent spillover instability is described via the sensitivity analysis. The performances of the controller are verified by experimental results.

This Paper deals with the design of Moving Magnet type Linear Oscillatory Actuator(MM-LOA) using spring damper based on the design procedure and the characteristic analysis. MM-LOA is applied to variable load such as vaccum pump and compressor, The structure of piston type is selected to reduce a noise. MM-LOA has over-displacement in starting state because of the low inertia of mover To improve the starting characteristic, spring damper is used. The optimum spring constant of spring damper is detected and in consideration of spring damper, MM-LOA redesigned. The parameter is calculated by Finite Element Method(FEM). For the dynamic characteristic analysis, time differential method composed of voltage and kinetic equation is used. The propriety of the improved model is verified through the experimental results.

Conventional robot manipulators actuated by motors with the speed reducer such as the harmonic drive have weakness in the load capacity, since the speed reducer does not have enough strength. To overcome this, a new type of the robot actuator based on the four-bar-link mechanism driven by the ball screw was proposed and constructed. Also, a new type of a revolute-jointed robot manipulator composed of the developed actuators was developed. The base axis is actuated by the motor with the conventional speed reducer, but the other axes are actuated by the proposed actuators. The kinematics and dynamics of the robot were analyzed, and the performance test of the robot was made. Through the test results, the performance of superior load capacity versus the robot weight is shown.

In previous research, we proposed robust saturation controller which involves both actuator's saturation and structured real parameter uncertainties. This controller can analytically prescribed the upper and lower bounds of parameter uncertainties, and guarantee the closed-loop robust stability of the system in the presence of actuator's saturation. And the availability and the effectiveness of the proposed robust saturation controller were verified through numerical simulations. In this paper, we verify the robust stability of this controller through experimental tests. Especially, we show unstable cases of other controllers in comparison with this controller. Experimental tests are carried out in the laboratory using a two-story test structure with a hydraulic-type active mass damper.

For DACS system which controls pintle position to change nozzle throat area, one actuator has been used for each modulatable pintle thruster. This ten actuator system drove to complex system structure and complicated control mechanism. In order to overcome this shortcomings, international patents were reviewed, analysed and presented.
Force-controlled electro-hydrostatic actuators have to exhibit high backdrivability, to quickly compensate for force control errors caused by externally disturbed rod movement. To obtain high backdrivability, the servomotor for driving the hydraulic pump, should rotate exactly to such a revolution to compensate for force control errors, compressing or decompressing cylinder chambers. In this study, we proposed a modified velocity control structure, including a robust internal-loop compensator (RIC)-based velocity controller, for the servomotor to improve backdrivability of a force-controlled EHA. Performance improvement was confirmed experimentally, wherein sinusoidal velocity disturbance was applied to the force-controlled EHA, with constant reference input. Its dynamic force control errors reduced effectively, with the proposed control scheme, compared to test results with a conventional motordriver, for motor velocity control.

Since IoT devices include various sensors and drivers, application programmers need to understand the structure and characteristics of sensors and actuators. If the manufacturer provides the driver of the sensor or actuator, IoT development can be efficiently carried out, which is called the Plug & Play technique. What matters is that the technique proposed by this research team in the past are not suitable for Arduino or Raspberry-Pi, which are recently used. In this paper, we propose a USB sensor device that can be mounted on a Raspberry-Pi. When the device is plugged into the Raspberry-Pi, the built-in driver is transmitted and played. The configuration of the USB sensor device was presented, and considerations for chip selection for processing sensors and drivers were presented.
