  • Free vibrations of steel-concrete composite beams are analyzed by using the dynamic stiffness approach. The coupled equations of motion of the composite beams are derived with help of the Hamilton's principle. The effects of the shear deformation and rotary inertia of the two beams as well as the transverse and axial deformations of the stud connectors are included in the formulation. The dynamic stiffness matrix is developed on the basis of the exact general solutions of the homogeneous governing differential equations of the composite beams. The use of the dynamic stiffness method to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a particular steel-concrete composite beam with various boundary conditions is demonstrated. The accuracy and effectiveness of the present model and formulation are validated by comparison of the present results with the available solutions in literature.

  • Interaction behaviors of high-speed compressible viscous flow and thermal-structural response of structure are presented. The compressible viscous laminar flow behavior based on the Navier-Stokes equations is predicted by using an adaptive cell-centered finite-element method. The energy equation and the quasi-static structural equations for aerodynamically heated structures are solved by applying the Galerkin finite-element method. The finite-element formulation and computational procedure are described. The performance of the combined method is evaluated by solving Mach 4 flow past a flat plate and comparing with the solution from the finite different method. To demonstrate their interaction, the high-speed flow, structural heat transfer, and deformation phenomena are studied by applying the present method to Mach 10 flow past a flat plate.

  • In this paper, a structural damage identification method (SDIM) is developed for cylindrical shells and the numerically simulated damage identification tests are conducted to study the feasibility of the proposed SDIM. The SDIM is derived from the frequency response function solved from the structural dynamic equations of damaged cylindrical shells. A damage distribution function is used to represent the distribution and magnitudes of the local damages within a cylindrical shell. In contrast with most existing modal parameters-based SDIMs which require the modal parameters measured in both intact and damaged states, the present SDIM requires only the FRF-data measured in the damaged state. By virtue of utilizing FRF-data, one is able to make the inverse problem of damage identification well-posed by choosing as many sets of excitation frequency and FRF measurement point as needed to obtain a sufficient number of equations.

  • This paper deals with the buckling loads of column with rotation end restricted by rotational spring. The ordinary differential equations governing the buckling loads of such column is derived as nondimensional forms, and also its boundary conditions are derived. The buckled column model is based on the classical Bemoulli-Euler beam theory. The Runge-Kutta method and Regula-Falsi method are used to perform the integration of the differential equations and to determine the eigenvalue. The numerical methods developed herein for the buckling loads of the such column are found to be efficient and reliable. It is expected that the results obtained herein can be practically utilized in the structural engineering field.

  • In the practical engineering fields, the horizontally curved beams are frequently erected as the major/minor structural components. The effects of both variable curvature and variable cross-section on structural behavior are very important and therefore these effects should be included in structural analyses. From this viewpoint, this paper deals with the free vibrations of horizontally curved beams with variable curvature and variable cross-section. In this study, the parabola as the curvilinear shape and stepped beam as the variable cross-section are considered. The ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such beams are derived. For calculating the natural frequencies, the governing equations are solved by numerical methods. The Runge-Kutta and Determinant search Methods are used for integrating the differential equations and for calculating the natural frequencies, respectively. With regard to numerical results, the relationships between frequency parameters and various beam parameters are presented in the forms of Table and Figures.

  • In this study, a new smart beam finite element is proposed for the finite element modeling of the beam-type smart structure with bonded plate-type piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Constitutive equations far the direct piezoelectric effect and converse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric materials are considered. By using the variational principle, the equations of motion for the smart beam finite element are derived. The presented 2-node beam finite element is isoparametric element based on Timoshenko beam theory. The validity of the proposed beam element is shown through comparing the analysis results of the verification examples with those of other previous researches. Therefore, by analyzing smart structures with smart beam finite elements, it is possible to simulate the control of the structural behavior by piezoelectric actuators with applied voltages and the monitoring of the structure behavior by piezoelectric sensors with sensed voltages.

  • Piezoelectric solids such as PZT and PLZT have been widely used as sensors or actuators for various smart structural systems. The main problem occurring in the applications is that a larger and larger actuation force is required to maximize the function of the system. This naturally leads to local concentrations of electric or stress fields near crack tips or geometric irregularities and thereby results in a nonlinear behavior of the system Hence, it becomes more important to Predict the nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric solids In this Paper we investigate the micro-mechanism of nonlinear behavior in piezoelectric materials and propose constitutive equations. The calculation results obtained from an associated finite element Program are shown to be qualitatively consistent with experiments.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop Neural Network models for Approximate Structural Analysis (NNASA). As an initial stage, the paper classifies the characteristics and the active role of neural networks in the numerical analysis by comparing neural networks with conventional numerical analysis algorithms. The paper proposed two methods of finding solutions of linear algebraic equations by a modified neural network algorithm, and presents that multilayer feedforward networks are a class of universal approximators by comparing the neural network with regression and interpolation techniques.

  • Accurate prognoses of the durability of concrete structures require a detailed description of the continuously running aging processes and a consideration of the complete load history. Therefore, in the framework of continuous porous media mechanics a model is developed, which allows a detailed analysis of the most important aging processes of concrete as well as a flexible coupling of different processes. An overview of the prediction model and the balance equations is given. The material dependent model equations, the consequences of coupling different processes and the solution scheme are discussed. In two case studies the aging of concrete due to hydration and chloride penetration are presented, which illustrate the capabilities and the characteristics of the developed model.

  • In general, the study of a high-rise building's behaviour when subjected to a horizontal load (wind or earthquake) is carried out through numerical modelling with finite elements method. This paper proposes a new, original approach based on the use of a multi-beams model. By redistributing bending and axial stiffness of horizontal elements (beams and slabs) along vertical elements, it becomes possible to produce a system of differential equations able to represent the structural behaviour of the whole building. In this paper this approach is applied to the study of bending behaviour in a 37-storey building (Torre Pontina, Latina, Italy) with a regular reinforced concrete structure. The load considered is the wind, estimated in accordance with Italian national technical rules and regulations. To simplify the explanation of the approach, the wind load was considered uniform on the height of building with a value equal to the average value of the wind load distribution. The system of differential equations' is assessed numerically, using Matlab, and compared with the obtainable solution from a finite elements model along with the obtainable solutions via classical Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The comparison carried out demonstrates, in the case study examined, an excellent approximation of structural behaviour.
