  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among attitude towards mathematics, mathematics activity, and mathematics achievement, and compare the relationship between the United States and Korea using the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) database. Since Korea is one of the countries where performance was among the highest and the United States is one of countries where performance was among the middle in mathematics, and many previous researchers reported that attitude towards mathematics and class activities are factors that affect mathematics achievement. the comparison study between two countries would be very important to analyze how factors are affected by country difference. The major research questions are as follows: (1) What constitutes attitude towards mathematics and mathematics activities in the TIMSS database\ulcorner (2) How do these two variables, attitude towards mathematics and mathematics activities, affect mathematics achievement differently between the United States and Korea\ulcorner The result indicates that the relationship between the attitude towards mathematics and the mathematics achievement is stronger for Korea than for the United States; however no country difference is found between the mathematics activities and mathematics achievement. According to this study high mathematics achievement is expected when students' attitude towards mathematics is positively high.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate whether depression and social support have a multiple mediating effect in affecting the life satisfaction of the elderly with public and private transfer income. To this end, the 7th panel data (2017) among the data of the Korean Retirement & Income Study (KReLS) was used for analysis, and the analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling (SEM). As a result of the analysis, first, it was analyzed that the higher the public transfer income of the elderly, the lower the level of depression, the higher the social support, and the higher the satisfaction of life. Second, the partial mediating effect of depression was verified in the influence of the elderly's public transfer income and private transfer income on life satisfaction. Third, the partial mediating effect of social support was verified in the influence of the elderly's public transfer income and private transfer income on life satisfaction. Fourth, it was verified that the multiple mediating effects of depression and social support were significant in the effect of the elderly's public and private transfer income on life satisfaction. Based on the results of this analysis, policy proposals were made, such as revitalizing the Community Care program to strengthen the social support network of the elderly.

  • The main purpose of this study was to analysis of the structural relationship between early adolescents' social relationships, self esteem, life satisfaction, and school adjustment. Data harvested from the Korean Youth Panel Survey 2010 was analyzed by means of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results indicate that the model is appropriate in terms of goodness of fit and significant path based on the validation procedure. According to the model, the social relationships have some degree of influence upon self esteem which then goes on to have a subsequent effect on life satisfaction; which in turn have a further influence on school adjustment. Social relationships also have a direct influence on life satisfaction, school adjustment, and self esteem has a direct influence on school adjustment. The paper concludes with an outline of the implications of the present study for future studies on this subject.

  • Though extensive research has been carried out for the ultimate strength of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) members under static and cyclic load, there was only limited information on the applied analysis models. Modeling of the inelastic response of SRC members can be accomplished by using a microcosmic model. However, generally used microcosmic model, which usually contains a group of parameters, is too complicated to apply in the nonlinear structural computation for large whole buildings. The intent of this paper is to develop an effective modeling approach for the reliable prediction of the inelastic response of SRC columns. Firstly, five SRC columns were tested under cyclic static load and constant axial force. Based on the experimental results, normalized trilinear skeleton curves were then put forward. Theoretical equation of normalizing point (ultimate strength point) was built up according to the load-bearing mechanism of RC columns and verified by the 5 specimens in this test and 14 SRC columns from parallel tests. Since no obvious strength deterioration and pinch effect were observed from the load-displacement curve, hysteresis rule considering only stiffness degradation was proposed through regression analysis. Compared with the experimental results, the applied analysis model is so reasonable to capture the overall cyclic response of SRC columns that it can be easily used in both static and dynamic analysis of the whole SRC structural systems.

  • The ubiquitous technology, leading the stream of change in telecommunication market, makes VoIP a foundation technology to enter NGN era. With this trend in mind, VoIP providers try to satisfy customer needs and invest on R&D in order to survive in this emerging market. The critical issues to VoIP providers are two fold the first one is to find out the quality attributes of Internet telephony service; and the second one is to assess the impact they have on customer satisfaction, customer loyalty and customer performance. In this study, we attempt to empirically answer the above two issues employing SEM (structural equation modeling) and AHP (analytic hierarchy process), and suggest strategic guidelines for successful deployment of Internet telephony service.
