Sonic and supersonic jets include many complicated flow physics associated with shock waves, shear layers, vortices as well as strong interactions among them, and have a variety of engineering applications. Much has been learned from the previous researches on the sonic and supersonic jets but quantitative assessment of these jets is still uneasy due to the high velocity of flow, compressibility effects, and sometimes flow unsteadiness. In the present study, the sonic jets issuing from a convergent nozzle were measured by PIV and Schlieren optical techniques. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) with Olive oil particles of $1{\mu}m$ was employed to obtain the velocity field of the jets, and the black-white and color Schlieren images were obtained using Xe ramp. A color filter of Blue-Green-Red has been designed for the color Schlieren and obtained from an Ink jet printer. In experiments, two types of sonic nozzles were used at different operating pressure ratios(NPR). The obtained images clearly showed the major features of the jets such as Mach disk, barrel shock waves, jet boundaries, etc.
The present study is to investigate the characteristics of the impulse waves discharged from the exit of the convergent and divergent pipes. An experiment is carried out using a shock tube with an open end and is compared to the computation of the axisymmetric, compressible, unsteady Euler equations, which are solved by the second-order total variation diminishing(TVD) scheme. For the computational work, some initial compression waves are assumed inside the pipe so that those are identical to the experimental ones of the shock tube. The results show that the peak pressures of the impulse waves discharged from the exit of convergent and divergent pipes decrease with an increase in the wavelength of the initial compression wave. All of the impulse waves have a strong directivity toward the pipe axis, regardless of the exit type of the pipe employed. The impulse waves discharged from the divergent pipe are stronger than those from the straight pipe, while the impulse waves of the convergent pipe are weaker than those from the straight pipe. It is believed that the convergent pipe can playa role of a passive control to reduce the peak pressure of the impulse wave. The present computations represent the experimented impulse waves with a good accuracy.
A large main shock may consist of numerous aftershocks with a short period. The aftershocks induced by a large main shock can cause the collapse of a structure that has been already damaged by the preceding main shock. These aftershocks are important factors in structural damages. Furthermore, despite what is often assumed in seismic design codes, earthquakes do not usually occur as a single event, but as a series of strong aftershocks and even fore shocks. For this reason, this study investigates the effect and potential of consecutive earthquakes on the response and behavior of concrete structures. At first, six moment resisting concrete frames with 3, 5, 7, 10, 12 and 15 stories are designed and analyzed under two different records with seismic sequences from real and artificial cases. The damage states of the model frames were then measured by the Park and Ang's damage index. From the results of this investigation, it is observed that the sequences of ground motions can almost double the accumulated damage and increased response of structures. Therefore, it is certainly insufficient to ignore this effect in the design procedure of structures. Also, the use of artificial seismic sequences as design earthquake can lead to non-conservative prediction of behavior and damage of structures under real seismic sequences.
Caffeine has both positive and negative effects on physiological functions in a dose-dependent manner. C. elegans has been used as an animal model to investigate the effects of caffeine on development. Caffeine treatment at a high dose (30 mM) showed detrimental effects and caused early larval arrest. We performed a comparative proteomic analysis to investigate the mode of action of high-dose caffeine treatment in C. elegans and found that the stress response proteins, heat shock protein (HSP)-4 (endoplasmic reticulum [ER] chaperone), HSP-6 (mitochondrial chaperone), and HSP-16 (cytosolic chaperone), were induced and their expression was regulated at the transcriptional level. These findings suggest that high-dose caffeine intake causes a strong stress response and activates all three stress-response pathways in the worms, including the ER-, mitochondrial-, and cytosolic pathways. RNA interference of each hsp gene or in triple combination retarded growth. In addition, caffeine treatment stimulated a food-avoidance behavior (aversion phenotype), which was enhanced by RNAi depletion of the hsp-4 gene. Therefore, up-regulation of hsp genes after caffeine treatment appeared to be the major responses to alleviate stress and protect against developmental arrest.
The phenomenology of shock loading effects in brittle mass has been of interest to researchers and engineers. The shock loading as blasting causes strong stress waves in the structures. Discontinuous faces due to shock waves interrupt the tensile stress wave propagation and reflect the stress wave propagation. To predict the fracturing behavior of brittle mass, it is required for the numerical method that can analyze the colliding and slipping behavior of discontinuous faces and the wave propagation in the mass, simultaneously In this study, the wave propagation in the brittle materials is analyzed using the modified distinct element method to be able to predict the behavior of discontinuous structures. The behavior of an unsupported bar subjected to loading at the end is analyzed to verify the rigid body motion of a bar and the relative displacement in the bar. The colliding behavior of two bars is analyzed to investigate the propagation of stress waves in the bar. The fracturing behavior of a bar due to impact loading is analyzed to investigate the propagation of stress waves in the bar with and without the discontinuous faces. The applicability of the modified distinct element method to the wave propagation problems is investigated.
Most high energy cosmic rays (CRs) are thought to be produced by diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) in supernova remnants (SNRs) within the Galaxy. Plasma and MHD simulations have shown that the self-excitation of MHD waves and amplification of magnetic fields via plasma instabilities are an integral part of DSA for strong collisionless shocks. In this study we explore how plasma processes such as plasma instabilities and wave-particle interactions can affect the energy spectra of CR protons and electrons, using time-dependent DSA simulations of SNR shocks. We demonstrate that the time-dependent evolution of the shock dynamics, the self-amplified magnetic fields and $Alfv{\acute{e}nic$ drift govern the highest energy end of the CR energy spectra. As a result, the spectral cutoffs in nonthermal X-ray and ${\gamma}$-ray radiation spectra are regulated by the evolution of the highest energy particles, which are injected at the early phase of SNRs. We also find that the maximum energy of CR protons can be boosted significantly only if the scale height of the magnetic field precursor is long enough to contain the diffusion lengths of the particles of interests. Thus, detailed understandings of nonlinear wave-particle interactions and time-dependent DSA simulations are crucial for understanding the nonthermal radiation from CR acceleration sources.
The thermal instability of Al2TiO5 Ceramics was contrlled by solid solution with MgO SiO2 and ZrO2 through electrofusion in an arc furnace. The thermal expansion properties of Al2TiO5 composites show the hysteresis due to the strong anisotropy of The crystal axes of these material. These phenomena are ex-plained by the opening and closing of microcracks. The difference in microcracking temperatures e.g 587.6(ATG2), 405.9(ATG3) and 519.7$^{\circ}C$(ATG4) is caused by the difference in grain size and stabilizer type. The thermal shock behaviour under cyclic conditions between 750-1400-75$0^{\circ}C$ show no change in mi-crostructure and phase assemblage for all three stabilized specimens. After the thermal loading test at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 100hrs. ATG1 and ATG2 materials decomposes completely to its components corundum and ru-tile in both cases. However with approximatelly 20% retention of the Al2TiO5 Thus in order to prevent decomposition of the stabilized material in the critical temperature range 800-130$0^{\circ}C$ it must be traversed within a short period of time.
In this paper, the inverse shape design is introduced using the permeable wall boundary condition. Inverse shape design defines the blade shape for the prescribed Mach numbers or pressure distribution on its surface. It calculates the normal mass flux from the difference between the calculated and prescribed pressure at the surface. A new geometry can be achieved after applying the quasi one-dimensional continuity equation from the leading edge to the trailing edge. For validation of this method, two test cases are studied. The first test case of inverse shape design illustrates the cosine bump with a strong shock. After seven geometry modifications, the shock-free bump geometry can be obtained. The second example concerns the redesign of a transonic turbine cascade. The initial isentropic Mach distribution has a peak on the upper surface. The target isentropic Mach number distribution was imposed smoothly. The peak of Mach distribution has disappeared at the final geometry. This proposed inverse design method has proven to be an efficient and robust tool in turbomachinery design fields.
Most of high energy cosmic rays (CRs) are thought to be produced by diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at supernova remnants (SNRs) within the Galaxy. Fortunately, nonthermal emissions from CR protons and electrons can provide direct observational evidence for such a model and place strong constraints on the complex nonlinear plasma processes in DSA theory. In this study we calculate the energy spectra of CR protons and electrons in Type Ia SNRs, using time-dependent DSA simulations that incorporate phenomenological models for some wave-particle interactions. We demonstrate that the time-dependent evolution of the self-amplified magnetic fields, Alfv$\acute{e}$nic drift, and escape of the highest energy particles affect the energy spectra of accelerated protons and electrons, and so resulting nonthermal radiation spectrum. Especially, the spectral cutoffs in X-ray and ${\gamma}$-ray emission spectra are regulated by the evolution of the highest energy particles, which are injected at the early phase of SNRs. Thus detailed understandings of nonlinear wave-particle interactions and time-dependent DSA simulations of SNRs are crucial in testing the SNR hypothesis for the origin of Galactic cosmic rays.
The V2F turbulence model, which has shown very good performance in several test cases at low speeds, has been applied to supersonic ramp flow with 20. corner angle at the free stream Mach number of 2.79. The flow is known to manifest strong shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions. As a comparative study, low-Reynolds k-ε models are also considered. While the V2F model predicts wall-pressure distribution well, it relatively predicts larger separation bubble and higher skin-friction after the reattachment than the experimental data. Although the ellpticity of f equation is the characteristics of incompressible flows, the converged solutions are acquired in the compressible flow with shock waves. The effect of the realizability constraints used in the model is also examined. In contrast to the result of impinging jet flows, the realizability bounds proposed by Durbin deterioate the overall solutions of the supersonic ramp flow.
