  • Vibration of string is transmitted to the front plate through bridge to cause resonance of the instrument body in viol family string instruments. Therefore. the properties. geometrical shape. and positioning of the bridge are expected to have some effect on the sound color. In this study the strain and the stress in the bridge. and the force exerted on the top plate by the bridge as the string vibrates the bridge in cello are calculated through simulation based on the theory of elasticity. The modes of vibration and the characteristic frequencies are also found. Furthermore. the effect of geometric shape of bridge on sound color is studied in terms of frequency response. The results of this study show that the vibration characteristics of bridge is quite complex and the properties and the geometrical shape of bridge have significant effect on sound color, and therefore. the sound color of a cello can be controlled by changing the geometrical shape of bridge.

  • Physical modeling is a synthesis method of high quality sound which is similar to real sound for musical instruments. However, since physical modeling requires a lot of parameters to synthesize sound of a musical instrument, it prevents real-time processing for the musical instrument which supports a large number of sounds simultaneously. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a single instruction multiple data (SIMD) parallel processor that supports real-time processing of sound synthesis of guitar, a representative plucked string musical instrument. To control six strings of guitar, we used a SIMD parallel processor which consists of six processing elements (PEs). Each PE supports modeling of the corresponding string. The proposed SIMD processor can generate synthesized sounds of six strings simultaneously when a parallel synthesis algorithm receives excitation signals and parameters of each string as an input. Experimental results using a sampling rate 44.1 kHz and 16 bits quantization indicate that synthesis sounds using the proposed parallel processor were very similar to original sound. In addition, the proposed parallel processor outperforms commercial TI's TMS320C6416 in terms of execution time (8.9x better) and energy efficiency (39.8x better).

  • The purpose of this article is to discuss that ajaeng sanjo music playing (ASMP) can change a person's life. Ajaeng is often called a Korean cello and is the largest and lowest-pitched instrument in the string instrument family in Korean music. From far away it has a deep, low sound. Its low sound adds to its comfort and peace. Listening to a low tone music can help you calm down and heart-easing. As soon as he listened ajaeng sanjo music he felt that low sound is mildly under his patronage. He felt much more interesting energy and vitality about our minds and bodies are in ajaeng sanjo music. He could immerse himself in playing ajaeng sanjo music (ASMP) for several years. The Korean music, tune is one of expression, meaning it is inseparable from the feeling. Many studies show that low tone music not only activates brain power, but soothes minds. Music always stood by him during difficult times. In a word, ASMP leads him to change of life and music is the language of emotion to him.

  • This study examined concept development in children in terms of sound propagation. The subjects consisted of 240 five-, seven-, and ten-year-old children from three kindergartens and two primary schools respectively. The instrument used for the purposes of this study was the examination instrument on sound as developed by the SPACE Project in the UK. The concepts related to sound were classified into five stages including : no recognition, egocentric concept, initial mental models, synthetic mental models, and scientific mental models. The results revealed the existence of significant differences in terms of the types of concept that children were aware of, according to age and context. Most five-, seven-, and ten-year-old children revealed egocentric concepts related to every sounds, drum, rubber band context, however, most five-, seven-, and ten-year-old children revealed their recognition of the synthetic models of sound propagation when using the string telephone context. These results have implications for the contents of science education for children when it comes to the development of concepts related to sound propagation.

  • This paper presents the coding method that have multi-mode and efficiency of audio codecs using the feature of audio signal. Recently, the developed extension super-wideband codec based on G.718 wideband divides two mode between Generic and Sinusiodal. So codec efficently encode audio signal exist in super-wideband. But the codec is not as efficent coding for harmonic component of wind instrument and string instrument and individual-Line component of percussion instrument. The proposed method are modeling and encoding multiple pitch and individual-line feature using multi mode coding. For the performance evaluation, we used SNR in MDCT domain for objective test and MUSHRA test for subjective test. As a result, the performance of SNR and MUSHRA test of the proposed method have better performance than the G.718 super-wideband codec.

  • In this paper, we proactively looked at the structure and characteristics of each instrument in order to compare and analyze the sound colors of the western violin, chinese erhu and korean haegeum, which are representative bow string instruments. Also, many performers have simply been unable to fully explain how the violin is rich in pitch and the haegeum has a unique tone. Also, many performers thinks that violin sounds rich just because it has many overtones and have been unable to fully explain how haegeum makes unique tone. While previous research data show that most instruments are studied and published by analyzing their own frequencies or related cases of acoustic studies, this study provides a visual look how the harmonics composition, which determines musical instruments' timbres, consists of and suggests data specifically by analyzing each sound pressure of integer multiple overtones so that the structure of instruments' unique timbre can be understood. Based on this, we hope that it will be of considerable help to the development of virtual musical instruments of korean traditional instruments, which are relatively small compared to western virtual instruments, by reproducing instrument sounds through the synthesizers in the future.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the synergistic effect of Samulnori and Ajaeng combination in music therapy. Samulnori is the Korea's most successful traditional music. The Ajaeng, Korean traditional string instrument, generally plays the bass part in ensemble music. However, we have tried a new kind of musical style. (As you can see in the Youtube, https://youtu.be/QHIciJTTY0w). Samulnori and Ajaeng combination of our style have not been tried by any other musicians in Korea. Results from this study showed that Samulnori-induced excitation and Ajaeng-induced dynamics probably contributed to the synergistic effect of Samulnori and Ajaeng.
